this was a case from just a few days ago where a man, his wife their son, and a housekeeper were all killed in a home in northwest washington and then that house was then burned down. we have new video coming in. we will bring that story to you in a few minutes. first, tonight police have a suspect in custody for the brutal stabbing of a husband and wife in montgomery county. darcy spencer covered this story when it broke what is going on out there now? >> chris, i can tell you i've heard from a couple of neighbors in this community. they feel some sense of relief but also say they're still kind of panicked because it appears this suspect is connected here to the neighborhood. let me show you where we are. we are on ridge ride down the street from the vallardo residence. this is where montgomery county

police are at this hour inside the house conducting searches. police will only tell us this is part of their ongoing investigation into this double homicide. a suspect is in custody in the murders of dick and judy vallardo. we are told there's been no arrests made so at this point new 4 is not naming the suspect they have in custody. the vallardos were found dead on their home at ridge drive last sunday. they did not show up for a mother's day event. family members were expecting them they came here to their house and found them dead. police later said they had been stabbed to death with a knife or sharp instrument and that the suspect had gotten into their home through an unlocked window. their funeral was held yesterday. the police investigation taking place just down the street from

from prince george's county charles, calvert county. these showers are going southeast bound it will continue to rain across central and southern saint mary's county. nothing too heavy, but if you're outside, you'll need the umbrella for sure. one lone thunderstorm here to thes we of charlottesville, this is going to the east. southern fauquier county fredericksburg and stafford a chance for a few more showers. showers will continue to die out overnight. another likelihood of thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. that pattern will repeat for the next few days but there are drier days with lower humidity in the seven-day forecast. when the storms swepts in the phones lit up at the montgomery county's emergency communication communication center. two homes were struck by lightning. dispatchers also received calls

that drives were stuck in standing water. we know one man died in a fire in alexandria but there's no word on how it started. the fire broke out early this morning on the third floor of an apartment building on kenmore avenue. one of the residents pounded on the door trying to get the man inside to wake up. firefighters later found that man's body. another resident had burns to his body. it may be weeks before other residents are allowed back in their homes. prince gornleorge's are looking for information about a double homicide on audrey lane. paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital but he did not survive. police looked behind a nearby apartment building and found another man dead with gunshot wounds. new at 11:00, the ntsb is asking the fbi for help as investigator tries to determine what caused the deadly

derailment in philadelphia. specifically they'll be looking at whether a flying object hit the train's engine just before the crash. a commuter train traveling through the same area reported it had been hit by rocks or bullets. >> the question for me is whether whatever happened was enough to distract the operator of the train to cause him to lose situational awareness and to not brake and not slow down when he should have. >> today the federal railroad administration ordered amtrak to install automatic train controls along the route there's a don't have them. the curve in philadelphia did not have the safety device. we see protests all the time in d.c. but nothing quite like this. today hundreds of people in sail boats, kayaks and canoes took over puget sound for the paddle in seattle to protest shell oil's new oil rig, they banged

threat. nbc's john yang has more on the severe weather. >> overnight flashes of lightning in southwest nebraska as torrential rain and hail pummelled the area. tornados were reported in colorado. >> that's a tornado right there. >> reporter: in wyoming where this mobile home was destroyed. a tornado also struck down in south texas, part of that state experiencing heavy rain cha flooded swimming polls. there was a massive sinkhole in granbury. heavy rains are blamed for opening up this sinkhole which has grown to more than 40 feet wide and more than 40 feet deep. with more heavy rain forecast for tonight, officials fear it could grow bigger.
