we have on the scene, investigators are trying to piece together what happened here. now, it was about 2:30 in the morning when a call came in for a car crash in the 3200 block of reed street. when police arrived, they looked into that car and that's where they found a man dead. now, i spoke a little while ago to a gentleman who works in the area. he works as a security guard and he heard the commotion as he reported to work this morning. he heard multiple gunshots. >> oh, man, had to be about seven or eight shots. a lot of shots. >> reporter: then what? >> then i saw smoke coming from the parking lot area. >> reporter: and the 3200 block of reed street is closed for the investigation. also martin luther king is closed between johnson avenue and ardwick ardmore in the glenarden area. police saying that's going to remain the case for an hour or two, at least. in terms of the shooters or a

lookout for suspects, that information not available at this point. still very early in this investigation. back to you in studio. >> m 5:03. you can take the train to new york city again starting today. in an hour amtrak will run the first trains between new york and philadelphia since that deadly train derailment last week. the federal railroad administration told amtrak to add safeguards on the tracks before they can start running again. about 20 people are recovering in the hospital from the derailment. five in critical condition. everyone is expected to survive. at the crash site philadelphia mayor michael nutter and several others held a memorial service to remember the people who died. the victims of the crash left behind eight families who are grieving today and amtrak could have to pay hundreds of millions in damages to the victims. the law passed in the '90s though says they can't pay more than $2 million to crash victims and families. some say that amtrak should have to pay more than that.

right now, fairfax county officers trying to find at least two people they say killed a man in reston. relatives told news4 the victor is sharrod day. yesterday, they got inside and they got into the fight and someone shot and killed day. at least one other person was hurt. also right now, the search is on for a person of interest in connection with the deaths of four people near the vice president's residence in the district. d.c. police released surveillance video of a man running through a parking lot. they want to question him. on thursday someone called savvas savopoulos his wife amy and the housekeeper. the house was set on fire and the porsche was stolen. if you recognize the person in the video, call d.c. police. in the day ahead, supporters of the proposed purple line will hold a rally during the morning rush. they'll gather at 6:15 at the new library at wayne avenue.

it follows larry hogan saying the project's $2 billion price tag is unacceptable. hogan is reluctant to go forward because of the current costs of the project. the 16-mile light rail would connect new carrollton and bethesda. plan ahead if you take the vre fredericksburg line. you could see some delays for the next two weeks. crews will perform track work and switch upgrades. there could be up to 45 minute delays there. the construction will affect both north and southbound trains. this is all part of a project to create a third track between d.c. and richmond. no school today for students at st. michael the archangel high school. it's in fredericksburg virginia. the principal said there's a problem with the electrical power. as you plan your summer vacation, shenandoah national park says it's opening a new area where you can take your kids. there's a kid friendly trail at black rock summit. that's near the dundo overlook. it's the second family friendly

welcome back at 5:09. a computer security expert claims he hacked into the entertainment systems of more than a dozen planes and was able to control the planes' engines. chris roberts made the revelation to the fbi which seized a bunch of computers from his home as they investigate. he is hoping this helps fix a potential security threat. the fbi is not commenting. severe weather is whipping across the united states. southwest oklahoma is bearing much of the brunt. people in northern texas faced heavy thunderstorms and hail. the national guard helped rescue ten people from their homes and cars. a flooded river forced missouri residents from their homes as well. authorities said strong winds derailed a freight train in eastern kansas as well. just take a look at that damage. terrible. nothing that severe around here today, but tom says we need to be ready for the possibility of some storms. tom? >> yeah, only a small chance of

we have an update on a developing story out of nevada. a person trapped in a fatal plane crash was rescued. take a look at some video from the scene. you can see it from afar, the flames pouring out. this is a hundred miles from las vegas. one person died. three others were hurt. they're being treated right now. a total of four people were on board. now, after the crash those flames -- they spread to surrounding brush making a bigger fire. the faa is trying to figure out what caused this accident. aaron? >> angie, thank you. 15 after the hour. a developing story right now. the marine corps is looking into what caused the deadly hard landing of an osprey aircraft. an eyewitness said it just literally appeared to drop out of the sky. this happened yesterday morning in hawaii. you can see dark plumes of smoke

in this video of the aftermath there. one marine died on impact. the other 20 marines and a navy corpsman were rushed to the hospital. a rockville man is waking up in jail in alaska charged in the death of his long-time neighbors. police arrested scott tomaszewski while getting off a cruise ship in juneau. he is charged in the deaths of the vilardos. police say he confessed to the crime and investigators found money with possible blood in tomaszewski's wallet at the time of his arrest and found evidence in his cabin linking him to the couple's murder. they tracked him down while investigating a separate burglary last month. neighbors are stunned. >> a lot of anxiety in the neighborhood. not much sleep and worrying. >> reporter: montgomery county police say when he was a teen he house sat for the vilardos. the couple was found dead in their pajamas at their home in ridge drive in rockville on mother's day. the couple's family said quote,

-- health. asthma symptoms can mask food allergies. it looks like reactions to the food alher jis. doctors in ohio looked at 650 children kids with asthma were tested for peanut allergies and among those who learned their child does have a peanut allergy, more than half had never considered their child might be allergic. also in news4 your health, children are not getting enough exercise. researchers compared the activity of preschoolers from ten different day cares, and they say kids were only active for 48 minutes per day. that means they're sitting down for 70% of their school day. a new study finds some kids' dance programs may not give them all the exercise they need. researchers at the university of california found hip-hop classes provided the most movement for young kids. they found that flamenco recorded only four minutes of

the afternoon. right now, don't have anything on storm team 4 radar. all clear in the region. the only problem is the patchy fog in the rural areas. central part of shenandoah, dense fog forming where it's in the 60s. east of the blue ridge, it's generally just a little patchy ground fog in some rural areas where it's in the mid to upper 60s. prince george's county, montgomery in the mid 60s. by noontime we'll soar into the low and mid 80s. steamy through the afternoon getting into the upper 80s by home. that's when you'll hear some thunder, seeing flashes of lightning, some brief heavy downpours rolling through from scattered thunderstorms rolling through. only a small chance they would be severe. tomorrow, another hot and humid day. highs reaching the upper 80s. turning less humid by tuesday night. smaller chance of an isolated

looking at the storying make headlines right now at 5:30. police are investigating a deadly shooting in prince george's county, near reed street off of martin luther king highway. so far, no word on a suspect or motive. you can once again take the train to new york city. amtrak we're talking about here. it will start running the first

what we are being told at this point, at least five outlaw biker groups were here. 150 to 200 members, it started with a fight in the bathroom, spilled over into the bar and then out into the parking lot. overnight at least 100 people have been arrested or detained here. police have confiscated more than 100 weapons. everything from guns and knives to chains and clubs. their investigation is continuing. there is concern this evening or this morning, rather, that more gang members could be on the way. in fact police telling us overnight they arrested some of the gang members on the outskirts of town and many of those face weapons charges at this point. aaron, it's still going on. the investigation and the protection here. >> wow. jay gray live in waco texas. thanks, jay. it is now 5:33. firefighters say the location of a smoke alarm may have delayed its warning in a fire at a

prince george's county apartment. a woman died in the fire. neighbors called 911 when smoke started to fill up the hallway on audrey lane in oxon hill early sunday morning. firefighters found the smoke alarm located in a hallway closet. a woman remains in serious condition this morning after jumping in front of a metro train. this happened at the silver spring metro station yesterday morning. metro police say she intentionally jumped on to the track and trains had to single track for several hours. no delays are expected on the red line this morning. i'm angie goff at the live desk. we have new video in to the live desk of this scene of another shooting out in prince george's county. take a look. you see police there. they have roped off this area. of the 4500 block of sheraton street. this is in riverdale. we know that one person was shot. at this point we do not have an update on that individual's

condition. we are in touch with investigators and will bring you updates as we get them. >> angie goff thank you. it's now 5:35. a bizarre string of events, a man in columbia heights woke up to the sound of a knife being pulled from his kitchen knife set and found two burglars in his apartment. he simply asked them to leave and they did. >> i said, i know that you're here, just get out. take whatever you want. just leave. >> just when he thought he was safe, the burglars returned for a bag they left behind. >> opened the door, threw it out. and they left. >> an off duty officer in a nearby giant noticed something suspicious and called in. one burglar is facing charges and at least some of the stolen items are back with their owner. 5:35 now. turning to the race for the white house, hillary clinton is heading to iowa today amid growing criticism she doesn't take enough questions from the press. republican candidates like jeb bush, carly fiorina and rand paul piled on in iowa.

president obama's former senior adviser david axelrod told nbc news he thinks it would be a quote terrible mistake if clinton doesn't open up more while campaigning. this is her second campaign stop in iowa. you may have seen d.c. mayor muriel bowser on national tv this weekend. fox news sunday named her its power player of the week. >> our fiscal house is in order. our city is in order. our ethical house is in order. and we can take care of our own of this business. >> mayor bowser saying that congressional oversight interferes with her ability to run the city. she also talked about supporting low income neighborhoods and encouraging citywide growth. a college campus in virginia is now an endangered historic site. there's a slave cemetery and nearly two dozen historic buildings at sweet briar college north of lynchburg. the school is closing in august and alumni are fighting to keep it open. the "richmond times-dispatch" says preservation virginia added the campus to the list of

a bus driver in georgia may pay a big fine for causing a crash after stopping on a train track. look at this video here. it shows the csx train slamming into the back of a bus. six people were hurt as they ran to safety. they're all expected to be okay.

silver spring. kristin wright with why they're planning on protesting this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. yes, this is the new silver spring library under construction and the plan is to put a purple line station here. that is if the light rail project moves forward. so a group called action committee for transit is pro protesting what it believes is a stall in the plans and a reluctance by governor hogue on the move forward. it would connect montgomery and prince george's countys with 21 stops between bethesda and new carrollton. estimates put it at $55 million to operate. a "washington post" report friday quoting governor hogan said that the price tag of the purple line is not acceptable. and that it needs to be dramatically lower. keep in mind, the governor has not made a decision on the project. purple line opponents say the cost outweighs the benefits but supporters at today's -- and

today's protesters say it would connect areas not so easily linked by metro, spur economic development and ease some of the rush hour gridlock. there is $900 million in federal aid on the table to help pay for the purple line. now, the protest is during this morning's rush hour from 6:15 to 9:00. the message is clear -- they want the purple line to move forward. back to you. >> thank you, kristin wright. 13 before the hour right now. a set back for montgomery county schools as it tries to find a new superintendent. the board of education says dr. andrew houlihan from houston has change his mind. this came days after they announced he was the first choice. the board has looked at 25 candidates speaking in person with seven of them. thieves are casing bikes across our area. it turns out mornings are the busiest time for them to steal the bike. there are more popular places they target. the i-team investigation in five minutes. a fire near the beltway caused a traffic nightmare this weekend. look at this photo from our news

22% said they saved or invested the saving and millennials were more likely to save the money. just 14% said they increased their spending with the extra savings. well chances are somebody will be sitting next to you if you plan on taking a flight this summer. the airline industry is forecasting its busiest summer travel season ever. more than 220 million passengers are expected to fly in the u.s. between june and august. that's up 4.5% from last year. u.s. airlines are trying to meet that demand by increasing the number of available seats. the industry says the improving economy is likely responsible for the increased air travel. well your memorial day road trip just got more expensive. gas prices have skyrocketed as we head to the unofficial start of summer. for unleaded it's $2.47, up four cents from last week. in virginia, people are paying an average of $2.47 for regular. maryland's average is up to $6.66. in west virginia you're paying about $2.67 and in d.c. the
