torched stolen car could be a key clue in this quadruple murder case. this is the 9 is 11 porsche stolen from the scene on woodland drive. this is what it looked like after it was set afire in the parking lot of a church in new carrollton maryland. it was a dark plume of smoke that attracted the attention of police. nearby that church, the la fontaine blue ban ket hall security cameras captured pictures of a potential suspect behind the building. it's hard to believe someone sets a fire like that in broad daylight in a church parking lot unless he was familiar with the area and felt comfortable here. back at that church parking lot today, investigators deployed a bloodhound in an effort to pick up the trail of that potential suspect. this is the last known sighting of that man and they're trying

to figure out why he brought the stolen car here and what he did after he set fire to it. sources say police believe that more than one suspect is involved in what appears to be a quadruple murder at this multimillion dollar mansion on woodland drive in northwest. sources tell news 4 investigators believe this began sometime wednesday afternoon, continued through the night and ended thursday afternoon when a fire was set apparently to cover up the murders. found dead inside the house, a man, his wife their 10-year-old son and the family's housekeeper. sources say investigators believe the suspects had knowledge of this family and how they lived their day-to-day lives. sources believe that people in the house were bound and threatened until the man got what they were looking for. now, there are two security

cameras over there. but so far, no surveillance video from here. that could be telling. back to you. >> pat collins, thank you. we just shared the surveillance video again on our facebook page. if you'd like to share it and maybe help in the case. also tonight, we are hearing from the housekeeper who's told not to come to work on the day of that fire. her story and the phone call her friend's husband got after going to that house. we'll have that later in this newscast. now we turn to our weather. just within the past hour or so, many of us feeling rain and hearing thunder, too, after a steamy day around here. chief meteorologist doug kammerer joins us. when's going on out there? >> hot and humid conditions and sometimes leads to the showers and storms out there right now. we continue to see them just forming around the area and right now along the beltway and areas to the south and west.

radar showing showers and thunderstorms across our region. here's where they are around the beltway, though. look right here over towards college park route 1 and route 50 out of d.c. more back to the west and herndon, the great falls area and then another one around the -- the area as well. again, just north of bethesda seeing those. heavier showers here too, along route 17 to stafford county with the storms. front royal with a few more and then martinsburg and winchester along i-81 and watching as these storms move through the region. most of these with heavy downpours and lightning and that's about it. i watch this for you on radar and continue to give you the latest here from the weather center. >> thank you. a mother nearly caught the guy she believes sexually assaulted her 12-year-old daughter and her actions could help police catch him. video showed the man police say attacked a girl in a hallway last weekend.

friday afternoon prince georges county police say the mother knocked the suspect down but he got away. the man is african-american. he had a tattoo of the word "blessed" on his neck and a tattoo of a star on both shoulders. you should call police if you see him. president obama today offered the gratitude of the nation to the men and women who rushed to the aid of those who were injured in the train derailment near philadelphia. the president shook hands with city officials after touching down in philadelphia earlier today. he's on his way to an event in camden new jersey. all clear wave and the train on the way. today service began again along the section of track that was the scene of that deadly amtrak derailment last week. the first train between philadelphia and new york left philly just after 6:00 a.m. minutes later, it passed the site of last week's crash where eight people were killed. about 200 more injured. but aside from a couple of trucks there's not much

evidence at the accident scene and a big change though. amtrak installed a safety system that will automatically slow down trains speeding through this area. also today, two more lawsuits filed against amtrak for the crash. one comes from a group of passengers the other from the train's conductor. people who live in waco texas, are on edge tonight. they're afraid that more members of outlaw motorcycle gangs might target their community. nine bikers died during an all-out brawl at a restaurant in that town yesterday. and innocent by standstanders running for their lives as the bullets were flying. nbc's jay gray with the latest on the threat that officers are dealing with tonight. >> someone's been shot. >> reporter: even veteran law enforcement officers say they're stunned by the brazen attack and carnage beft e lake effect behind. >> we had wounded inside. we had people stabbed, shot and beat. >> reporter: nine gang members

killed at least 18 wounded during a full-on recruiting and turf war of five outlaw biker groups. >> five known gangs involved here. i am not about to give them the respect of mentioning their names. >> reporter: police say it started in the bathroom at the twin peaks restaurant spilling into the bar and the parking lot. >> there was people pulling out guns and started shooting people. that's what they did in there. >> reporter: officers staged in the area rushed in. >> we have been here for past two months knowing that there are issues. >> reporter: police say they approached the managers at twin peaks of manage activity before the shootout. >> we have encouraged them to work with us to keep it from happening. but that was to no avail. >> reporter: corporate headquarters said in a written statement that the management team chose to ignore the warnings and advice from both the police and our company. and as the investigation continues here there's now a new concern. >> nay are threatening to kill

many were shocked by how police responded like soldiers with assault weapons and camouflage and combat vehicles. making police community relations worse. turns out five federal agencies have spent $18 billion to get police 5,200 humvees and 617 bigger mine resistant vehicles. president obama advised by a task force study today ordered an immediate ban on the pentagon providing weaponized vehicles heavy weapons and ka mo uniforms might be recalled. because he said local residents are being alienated and intimidated. >> we have seen how militarized gear can sometimes give people the feeling like there's an occupying force opposed to part of the community protecting and serving them. >> reporter: in maryland, the feds provided this armored personnel carrier but the police chief told me it's painted blue

the defense minister and two other cabinet ministers. about a dozen people rallied in silver spring today to show support for the purple line. they're upset that maryland's governor put a hold on that project. governor hogan says that $2 billion price tag is unacceptable. the protect stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in federal aid if it does not move forward soon. new at 6:00, the verizon center will soon have a new name. verizon says it will not renew its naming rights deal for the arena. washington business journal reported the news in 2018 the name for the venue that hosts the capitals wizards and the mystics and concerts and other events is up for grabs. the building opened back in 1997 as the mci center. controversial construction project is making neighbors nervous. now there's a new effort to stop crews from doing part of their

some maryland residents may be getting money back from the state after a ruling by the u.s. supreme court. the justices found one of maryland's tax laws has the effect of double taxing income of residents earned in other states. maryland officials say it could cost local governments up to $50 million and the state may have to refund up to $120 million in taxes. crews will cut down the first of nearly 200 trees this week in a controversial railroad project in the district. csx is rebuilding the virginia avenue train tunnel in southeast washington and the railroad says it will remove trees only when necessary to maintain the tree canopy around the tunnel as long as possible. opponents posted signs on the trees. homeowners get $500 to compensate for noise, dust and other construction problems. community is cleaning up today after a tornado lipped

through town. it happened the town of tickfaw, louisiana, small town of 50 miles northwest of new orleans. three homes there were damage destroyed that is. the national weather service said the town was hit by an f-1 tornado, winds of 110 miles per hour. >> a lot of tornadoes and that season is just getting started. we have our own weather issues. >> nothing severe in our region. i don't think we'll see severe weather but that's what it's looking like. black skies just off in the distance right now. where the shower activity is as we look towards the area right now. what we are going to be seeing is the temperatures. upwards of 90 degrees in the parts of the region. let's take a look. a little bit different vantage point with the area just off to the west. this is 301. very dark clouds around the area right now. this is 50 at 301. no rain here and the dark clouds just off in the distance. currently 81 degrees.

dew point up to 72 right now. that just makes it oppressive. 70 or above it's not nice to go outside. current temperature's 87 in fredericksburg. cool as far as rain is concerned in culpepper. 90 if frederick. but look at the heat index. up to 95 in frederick. that's the way it feels. 95 down towards fredericksburg. an incredibly hot and humidity day an looks like it stays that way the next couple of days. we have numerous scattered showers and thunderstorms and that's what they are. scattered. clear for the most part and prince william county, a shower earlier earlier. we are still seeing some along the beltway. look at this one east of college park and vansville here and west of buoy. a lot of lightning with this one here. i'll zoom in and dealing with the lightning along the beltway. if you have friends or driving along over the next hour or so expect it to be very very slow. from 50 all the way up towards

the 95 split and then the north and west continuing to see some. south, over towards kettering, seeing some of that shower activity. this starting to wane a little bit forcing the energy towards the north and around berwyn and riverdale. and then further up to the north around white oak, fairlane 29 and then 97 moving from wheaton up towards olny and the intercounty connector. heavy rain and lightning with some of these. down to the south, a few more forming along the potomac. right around stafford and stafford county. cull perrer county seeing the rain. up to the north, numerous showers around the winchester area martinsburg and continuing to see them form throughout the rest of the evening. now if you haven't seen any rain you may not see any at all. others are seeing very quick downpours and seeing through 7:00 8:00 9:00 tonight and then by tomorrow morning, the rain out of here. cloud cover, maybe areas of fog

and tomorrow afternoon, maybe just a couple of scattered showers. i don't think we'll see a repeat of what we have seen today as far as the storms are concerned but there's a slight chance. best chance south and east of d.c. and upper 80s to 90 degrees. 87 leesberg. 89 to fredericksburg. the next couple of days we change. in a big way. we go from 88 to 76 to 72 on thursday. thursday's looking beautiful with plenty of sunshine. low humidity. friday looks good at 75 and then the weekend. memorial day weekend, saturday sunday and monday looking good. 74 on saturday. the warmest day on memorial day at 88 and if you're thinking of heading towards the beaches, i'll be down there on friday. upcoming memorial day weekend. looking pretty good. cool on saturday. take the jacket. 68. 74 looking good on sunday. and then monday coming in at a temperature of 82 degrees. it will be nice and warm down there. now i'm looking for a place to stay if you know anyone.

>> all right. >> can you help a guy out there? well-known defense lawyer has now signed on to represent the man suspected in the murder of a rockville couple. scott tomaszewski was arrested in alaska. he was on a cruise with his parents. he allegedly confessed to killing richard and julianne vilardo on mother's day. now why the defense lawyer wants the confession thrown out. chris? >> reporter: the question is was it a legal confession? you will hear from the defense lawyer in a few moments. he told me today he's advising his client scott tom skewdy to wave extradition clearing to be transferred from alaska to here in montgomery county where he could appear in court this thursday or friday. investigators say the crime scene at the vilardo home was as violent as any they have ever seen. blood trails go from one room to another.

dick vilardo was found outside. his wife jody died inside their home on ridge drive in rockville. montgomery county state's attorney mccarthy said he'll try the case himself. prosecuting 31-year-old scott tomaszewski two counts of first-degree murder. >> horrible crime. wonderful people and family and been involved in this case from the very moment that this case was reported to us. >> reporter: the family hired well-known rockville defense lawyer kudel trying to have thrown out of evidence the confession tomaszewski made in alaska to the vilardo murders. >> obviously we have to look at all of the surrounding circumstances of that statement, what his condition was, what his mental status was at the time of the statement. >> reporter: this is the timeline to help police crack the case n. 1998 he was house sitting at the vilardo's home when there was a burglary. he supplied evidence to help

police at the time. then the past april there was a burglary across the street on ridge drive. detectives discovered that tom tomaszewski pawned items stolen in the burglary. he left with his parents for an alaskan cruise just hours after the murders. police arrested him in juneau and found money in his possession with blood on it. for those who lived nearby news of the arrest is a relief. >> your next door neighbor is your murderer? and for over 20 years they've lived next door to each other? this is crazier than fiction. >> reporter: when he returns to montgomery county tomaszewski will be charged with two counts of murder two counts of armed robbery and one count of burglary. that's the latest jim, back to you. >> thanks chris. more than a decade later, somebody's about to pay up for a huge protest that led to hundreds of arrests. how it's also impacting the

there is a plea deal in the assault case against marion barry's son christopher. his trial supposed to start on wednesday accused of throwing a trash can at a bank teller and then threatening her last

january. court documents filed friday indicate a plea deal is reached in the case and didn't give details. barry lost a bid to replace his late father on the d.c. council last month. two people have been charged in a deadly attempted robbery in fairfax county. police arrested rodriguez and may earlier to. they're charged in a deadly shooting at an apartment complex in herndon yesterday. we're told there was some kind of fight inside the apartment unit and then shots were fired. a man identified as day died. in that exchange. he's not officially running but former maryland governor o'malley appears to be setting up a presidential campaign headquarters. dozens of workers from o'malley's political action committee in the process of moving into a historic railway building in baltimore. they had been working here in d.c. but that office we're told is closing.

o'malley says he'll officially announce the intentions of running at the end of the month. maryland drivers warned to expect major congestion this week. police say drivers traveling on u.s. 50 450 and other roads in the annapolis area should expect delays through friday. 450 will be closed over the river while the blue angels practice tomorrow. drivers are urged to use route 70 instead and heavy traffic expected for the naval academy graduation and beach traffic on friday. next his desperate search ended in a strange encounter. what happened when the husband of the housekeeper killed inside a d.c. mansion went to look for his wife. and how a massive protest is impacting local police and your freedom of speech. members of the military assaulted by their own staying silent. now one officer who first shared her story with the news 4 i-team is taking steps the force change in the ranks.

week. >> first at 6:30 hearing from the long-time housekeeper of the savopoulos family. >> she described the last messages from the family and co-worker before the house caught on fire. news 4 reporter megan fitzgerald spoke with the woman a couple of hours ago. >> reporter: she asked that we not show her face on camera and refer to her as nelly and said she's owned a cleaning company where her friend vera worked. for the first time tonight we're hearing that vera's husband went looking for his wife at the savopoulos home just hours before the fire and had an eerie encounter. last wednesday, nelly says vera told her she wanted to work at the savopoulos home to get off early. >> send me a text message that she's not coming with me. that she's going to washington. >> reporter: that was the last message she received from vera. nelly says that around 9:00 that

night savvas savopoulos left her a voice message. she said the tone didn't seem right. >> it said i hope you can get this message. my wife's sick. my son is sick. and vera offered to stay overnight. but her phone is dead and we don't have any charge that fit her phone. would you please call her family and let them know that she's here with us. >> reporter: nelly didn't get the message until thursday morning which is why she says ve are's husband was concerned for her whereabouts and went looking for her. >> so when he knocked on the front door he told me that he got kind of sense like somebody was like standing in front of the door inside. so he -- he tried to knock more and he went around back in the

kitchen. you know? the garage area. when he went around savopoulos call him and tell him, oh i forgot to call you last night but vera is okay. >> reporter: 30 minutes later, thursday morning, nelly say said she received a text message from amy savopoulos. >> i'm making sure you're not coming to my house today. >> reporter: less than four hours later, the house was fire and four victims were found dead inside. people nelly say were like family to her. now she is left wondering who could do this and why. >> no idea who because, you know, there was a very lovely familiar. very nice family. amy was very sweet lady. >> now, we did ask d.c. police of vera's husband's conversation with salvevvas before the fire and

declined to discuss it. nelly said she's focused on helping nelly's family preparing to lay her to rest. >> must have been devastateing for her. what kind of sense did you get from personally she was touched by this? >> you got a sense she was in shock and extremely devastated coming to terms with a long-term friend and a family she worked for more than 20 years and doesn't have a clue who would kill them. >> thank you. appreciate it. martin luther king highway is back hope and closed for the morning rush while police investigated a homicide on reed street. police were called to the area about 2:30 this morning for a report of a car accident. when they got there, they found a man shot killed inside the car. they believe somebody shot at him while he was driving and then he crashed. nobody's been arrested. military personnel who report rape and sexual assault

are 12 times more likely to face retaliation than to see their attacker convicted. that is according to a new report released today by human rights watch. lieutenant colonel teresa james participated in the study. she is the highest ranking officer to come forward with her rape in the national guard. as she first told the news 4 i-team she believes that destroyed her 34-year career. but she told us she's going to appear before a judicial proceeding panel at the pentagon tomorrow as part of an independent review on how the military investigates sex assaults and retaliation. this report calls on the military to sfrengen its whistle-blower protection act so it can punish service members who retaliate against anyone who reports a rape or sexual assault. you can see the i-team's complete report on rape in the national guard on our nbc

washington app in the investigation section. the federal government will pay out millions of dollars over the arrest of nearly 400 protesters here in washington back in 2002. those protests happened in pershing park. as news 4's mark se gunshot graves reports now, those arrested aren't as in interested in the money as impact on future protests. >> reporter: many of those arrested back in 2002 came to protest the iraq war or the world bank. many others were innocent bystanders surrounded by police and swept up in what is now considered an unconstitutional mass arrest. >> park police many of them on horseback. i was asking the d.c. metro police. excuse me may i leave? they said no. >> reporter: it was september, 2002. protesters were gathering just a block from the white house in pershing park. some point d.c. police and u.s. park police were ordered to surround the park and detain inside of the park.

nearly 400 people were arrested. many were hog tied and detained for up to 24 hours. >> your hands locked behind your back. i was held in a police bus for about five hours. and then another seven hours, some people were in longer than me, in the police gymnasium on the mat with the right wrist to my left ankle. >> reporter: many sued the d.c. police and the u.s. park police. they say they wanted to be sure future protesters didn't have their constitutional rights violated by police. >> so while we're seeing protesters around the united states kettled and swept up in mass arrests and brutalized with indiscriminate conduct by the police we are putting an end to this and sends a message any police unit in the country can do the same thing and must. >> reporter: u.s. park police and the u.s. attorney's office declined to comment for the report. news 4. attention online a man claims he hacked into an airplane. now the airlines are weighing in

the man that the montgomery county school board wanted to run the school doesn't want the job. dr. andrew houlihan working in houston, texas. only last week they decided that he was the first choice. so far, we are told the board has looked at 25 candidates and that they have spoken in person with 7 of them. if you're planning to fly anywhere this summer expect crowded airports and airplanes. a record number of people are expected to take to the skies. u.s. airlines will carry 222 million passengers between june 1st and august 31st. that tops the summer of 2007 when about 217 million people flew. the industry's trade and lobbying group says more people are flying because of the rebounding economy. some of the major airplane manufacturers are casting doubt on a claim by a hacker who says he was able to take control of
