lightning, through portions of fairfax county. in and around the district within about the next 15 to 20 minutes. around bethesda and to the south around quantico. this line again back toward southern maryland. flooded roads, please turn around don't drown. i'll have the latest on these storms. we have new information in two high profile murder cases. >> police have a suspect in one of them. his trip back to maryland could begin tomorrow. the name of scott tomaszewski. he lives right next door to the house where dick and jody vilardo were found murdered on wednesday. >> a detective remembered tomaszewski a second time at the home 17 years ago. only the that detective spoke to shomari stone. >> i'm not retired. i'm still working. >> the retired montgomery police sergeant helped make an arrest

in the high profile double murder case of dick and jody vilardo. >> i can't turn off the desire to help my community. >> reporter: in 1998 he investigated a burglary and house fire at the vilardo's home on ridge drive. scott tom zoo us isky was a neighbor house sitting for them at the time. at one point he was a possible suspect but he provided information that helped police make an arrest. then last april, investigators say there was another burglary across the street from the vilardos. police say tomaszewski pawned some of the stolen items. price said he saw a possible connection to last week's murder ask the 17-year-old burglary case. >> when i read the case, the press release that the vilardos had been murdered, that their home had been burglarized. it seemed so familiar to me in terms of a burglary that was emotional in nature.

>> reporter: detectives investigate asked tomaszewski was arrested on a cruise with his parents and a relative in juneau alaska. police say he confessed to killing the vilardos. >> it is hard to turn off instincts that you develop in a police career just because you're retired. >> that was shomari stone reporting. tomaszewski could face murder charges in montgomery county at the end of the week. we have new information about the murders of four people including a child. in a multimillion-dollar house near the national cathedral last week. it has to do with that home security system. jack dlep bensen has the latest. >> reporter: someone who has been inside that house many, many times says it has an extensive security system and it was always on, even when people were home. every ground floor door and

window of the large and elegant brick home on woord drive was connected to an alarm system that would chime when it was open even when people were home. there were also exterior surveillance cameras. nellie a part time worker for the family said she cannot understand those who killed amy and savvas savopoulos how they got inside. police say there was no obvious sign of forced entry. >> windows, doors, everything. >> they kept it on all the time? >> reporter: nellie said she's been unable to sleep haunted by the loss of people she cared for and the worry that she might have realized sooner that something was wrong. she said she received an odd e-mail wednesday, the day before the fire burk she didn't see it on her phone until thursday morning. he said his wife amy was sick in bed which nellie said was extremely unusual. that vera had volunteered to

stay overnight and help which nellie said she had never done before. he said vera's phone died and she didn't have his charger and his didn't fit and could she tell anyone who might be worried about her. there was a pause as if he was being instructed and then said could you text me when you get this message. nellie said she texted her friend next day about 1:00 in the afternoon saying i heard you stayed over. are you okay? she said she received no reapply and shortly after that she found bout the fire. jackie bensen news4. first 4 traffic alert. one of the westbound lanes of the arlington bridge is temporarily closed. engineers found an area of corrosion. planning an inspection tonight. they're taking a closer look. the national parks service said the curbside closure will last throughout the night and

tomorrow morning. get the latest tomorrow morning on news4 today. for the first time people in fairfax county got to voice their concerns about police practices. to a commission reviewing the issue. the county established that commission to recommend changes that could help build trust between police and the community. one speaker said her 11-year-old son called police earlier this year because she wouldn't let him use the internet. she said when officers got to their vienna home, things took a terrifying turn. >> i was thrown on my bed. the officer was on my back. grabbed my hands, put me in handcuffs. physically dragged me down the stairs. >> fairfax county police have been criticize in the some high profile cases including the john gere shooting death. goer was unarmed when the officer shot and killed him in 2013. the county settled the lawsuit with gere's family. the pentagon programs provide weapons of war to local

police departments are being cut back under orders from president obama. that ban takes effect immediately. it is in response to complaints of police using armored vehicles and assault weapons to could not front protesters in ferguson, missouri. the president says the use of heavy military equipment undermines community trust in the police. new only the, the u.s. coast guard is investigating the death of a 10-year-old girl on a cruise ship off the carolina coast. the girl drowned in a pool on board the norwegian gem. you're looking at the website. the coast guard says the girl drowned sunday when the ship was about 75 miles east of myrtle beach. it sailed to port canaveral, florida, today. we don't know the girl's name or where she was from. norwegian is based in miami. the cruise line said it is extremely saddened by the news and extends sympathy to the family of the girl. there was no gunshot but federal officials have not ruled

out some other kind of object hit the windshield of that amtrak train moments before it derailed last tuesday. today the fbi said an examination of the train's windshield revealed it was not hit by a bullet. could it take months to learn just what caused the crash. the amtrak service from philadelphia to new york resumed for the first time this morning. also today, two separate lawsuits were filed. one was by an amtrak conductor. the other was by four passengers who were on board the train that derailed. they were among the 200 people injured in that crash. eight people were killed. funeral services for two of those victims were held today. police are bracing for retaliation attacks after a deadly biker brawl that killed nine people in texas. investigators in waco texas, said the restaurant crime scene is among the most gruesome they've ever seen. nbc news is reporting the

bandidos biker gang was considering adding a reference to texas on its official jacket patch. the mother in prince george's county knocked down the man who she believes sexually assaulted her 12-year-old daughter. that man got away. but now police have a better description of him. surveillance video captured the guy running away from an apartment building in forestville last week. police say he attacked the girl in the hallway after she got off the elevator. the girl's mother said the attacker is black. several tattoos including one on his neck that reads, blessed. and a star on both shoulders. if you know who he is police would like to hear from you. only on news4, a bicycle thief sharing tricks of the trade from jail. if i put one lock on my bike is that enough to stop you? no. >> tonight news4 i-team shows you how and when bike thieves

an offduty army captain rescued a couple trapped inside their burning car. a silver suv drifted over the center line on sunday in a road in chat haram county north carolina.

area down through montgomery county right through the district. right toward fairfax county and charles county and fredericksburg. very heavy rain. nothing severe. we have not seen any kind of severe thunderstorm warnings. we have a flash flood warning in effect until 1:45 them saw heavy heavy rain. please watch out. a lot of flooded roadways. right around damascus right along 70. it is just steady rain. then follow the lien toward gaithersburg. look at all the lightning. we have had two reports houses being set on fire. look at bethesda toward d.c. the strongest storm, let's zoom in on this guy right around the bethesda area. right along 355. making its way toward wheaton. and then in and around northwest d.c. right here where our station is. and then you just follow it down

toward i-95 down route 1. cross over the river and you're into portions of prince george's county. charles county you saw a big time storm earlier. now you're seeing another one around the 301 region. to the north and west. a lot of lightning with that and more lightning toward king george county. we're not done with this just yet. we'll continue to see it for the next hour to two hours and then we're done. the dew point still at 71. very muggy. that will stay that way right through day. the temperatures still in the 70s for the most part. 69 toward huntington. the wider picture shows the showers and storms we saw and then look at the push from the west. that's what we're dealing with. that's that line that has developed. farther to the west i want to point your attention to this line. notice behind it we have clearing skies. that's the front. it will move through during the day and boy, will we see some
