travel times coming up in a couple of minutes. >> thanks melissa. 6:02. there's more talk in d.c. about how to get around on the streetcars. it's all about keeping you safe. news4's derrick ward is on the "h" street corridor with the push for the campaign set to kick off today. derrick, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well that campaign will get underway in an hour and it will be one for the morning rush and one for the evening rush. it is all about getting people ready for the trolleys whether you plan to ride them or not. i should say streetcars as well. the sign there, it's an automated message, not expecting to board the trains because they're making simulated runs but later on this year they'll make the real runs revenue runs they like to call them. it's got to be a change for the folks whether you ride the trolleys or not. because you'll have another big vehicle out here. one that's a little less mobile than say a truck. it won't be able to change lanes.

after the hour today a judge will hear a plea deal case involving the son of the late marion barry. christopher barry reached that deal days before the trial on assault charges was set to begin. barry threw a trash can at a downtown bank teller and threatened her. mark sea graves will be in the courtroom to find out what happens. follow him on twitter. montgomery county school's interim superintendent will stay on the job for another year. larry bowers took the job in february when joshua starr resigned. last week the board of education announced they had selected a top candidate to replace starr. but that candidate has now backed out. today, the board will formally ask bowers to stay on as superintendent for one more year. bowers had planned to retire

this year. it is now 6:05. today the alexandria council will hold a vote on where the new metro station should go. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey says they want to put it in between the parkway and the tracks. there's still no word on when a westbound lane on the arlington bridge will open. it was closed closest to the curb more than 24 hours ago now. engineers found some corrosion during a routine inspection. in the district transportation officials plan to discuss how to make it easier to bike and walk to and from metro and vre metro stations. the meeting is a study, the study shows that more than 3,000 potential bicycle and pedestrian improvements to handle more riders. metro will update us on how it's prioritizing walk/bike access projects near metro's 91

6:15 now. new details in the deaths of four people in the district. investigators say a couple and their housekeeper were beaten and stabbed in a home not faer from the vice president's residence. the couple's 10-year-old son was burned so badly investigators don't know how he died. investigators tell news4 the security cameras around that home were disarmed. no surveillance video. the four people were found dead on thursday at a home along wood lawn drive in northwest. passengers and crew aboard a

cruise ship that was stranded now have to wait for an inspection to get back to shore. the norwegian ship ran aground as it was departing for boston. norwegian cruise line said it was a malfunction in the steering system causing the ship to sail off course. the ship was stuck for six or seven hours. high tide helped tug boats finally free it. the cruise line says the 3,500 guests and crew are safe. aaron? >> thank you. 16 after the hour now. right now environmental crews are trying to clean up the oil spill off the coast of santa barbara, california. about 21,000 gallons of crude oil spilled yesterday, leaving an oil slick about four miles wide there. it came from the ruptured pipeline. families can find out when they can return to their homes after a train derailment in louisiana. it was carrying hazardous chemicals. it derailed outside of baton

rouge. the tankers don't appear to be damaged at this point. they did evacuate the area as a precaution though. investigators suspect a damaged track caused that train to come off the track yesterday afternoon. 6:17 now. right now, prince george's county investigators are trying to find out who killed a young mother and then set her apartment on fire. firefighters found 21-year-old latiqua cherry dead sunday. officers canvassed the neighborhood with flyers in search of some answers. she died from the trauma inside her apartment. the victim received a stay away order against a man she was dating. the victim's mother believes he had something to do with her death. >> what person would want to take her life and, you know, what did she do so much? so harmful to them to hate her to do this horrible act with her? >> there is a $25,000 reward for

information leading to an arrest and conviction. we now know when the rockville man accused of murdering his neighbors will be back in montgomery county. in the picture you see here, scott tomaszewski is in a hearing in juneau alaska. this was yesterday. montgomery county police say he confessed to killing the vilardos two weekends ago. he waived his right to extradition at that hearing and that means he'll be brought brack to montgomery county to face charges next week. today, alexandria and arlington county will kick off construction on the four mile run project. and a ground breaking ceremony will take place today in alexandria near the four mile run soccer park. construction will start on building a barrier between the existing wetlands and the tidal wetlands. the arlington portion will start later this year. right now, we are working to find out why vice president joe biden's son is in the hospital. bo biden is being treated in our area. he is the former attorney general of delaware.

he received medical treatment in recent years for a mild stroke and surgery to remove what doctors described as a small lesion. ten young people arrested in canada the morning. the police there say that they wanted to -- those people wanted to travel to iraq and syria to join isis. police did not share details of the suspect's identities at this point, nor did they say specifically what led to the arrest. a train worker's union is urging amtrak to make changes to avoid another deadly crash. the brotherhood of locomotive engineers and trainmen wants a second engineer on trains. engineer brandon bostian was alone on the train when amtrak 188 derailed in philadelphia last week. he says he doesn't remember when the train flew off the tracks. it was traveling at more than 100 miles an hour in a 50 mile per hour zone. having a second engineer could have prevented the crash. in a story you will see only on news4, we are learning what's being done to address lead poisoning concerns at a d.c.

homeless shelter. two young children tested for high levels of lead in the systems. peeling paint was discovered in the cafeteria and cordoned off an area. and now every child at d.c. general under the age of 2 will be eligible for lead testing. >> they're doing a full inspection of the entire facility to make sure proactively that there are not any other places that could be a potential source of lead. >> lead poisoning can cause serious physical and mental problems and has been linked to low i.q. the house is trying to bring sledding back to the hill. take a look. do you remember this scene? it will be six months though before there's any snow to sled on if we're lucky longer. the house passed a bill that would allow you to legally sled down that glorious west lawn slope. a track down on the sledding has caused an uproar and eleanor

in news4 your health, women who have c-sections may face postnatal complications. that study says the risk of blood transfusions and intensive care admissions are higher among women after their first c-section. women facing multiple c-sections were at the risk of unplanned hysterectomies. for most, the risks are low. there may be a link between hearing loss and dementia. this is coming out of the university of colorado. researchers there say there's a portion of the brain used for hearing that can become reorganized and shrink. one in three adults over the age of 60 has reported age related hearing problem. a day care under surveillance after a 6-year-old girl was left alone for several hours. she was put in the van after school, they realized seven hours later that she never got out of the that vehicle. the little girl was not hurt.

the mother does not believe the entire day care is to blame. >> i'm not going to say, well, they left my child on the van, that's a terrible day care. i don't want to do that because it's not a terrible day care. >> the two workers involved have since been fired. no criminal charges have been filed. despite a difficult year in the headlines, the university of virginia is renewing president teresa sullivan's contract. her contract was set to expire next year. the new deal lasts until 2019. she earned $647,000 a year. the school recently was the focus of a now discredited "rolling stone" article about rape on campus. 6:26. leaders in arlington are taking a stance on the redskins name. the county board passed a resolution supporting a potential move to virginia. the resolution also called on owner daniel schneider to change the team's name. the board said the word is objectionable to many. because it's considered a racial slur.

until now, the only lead they had was surveillance video and now they have that name. news4's zachary kiesch has more on this suspect. >> reporter: aaron, it appears that isiah bogan lives in the same apartment complex that this assault took place. that's why police attention this morning is here in forestville. take a peek at this picture right now. an arrest warrant has been issue bded -- issued for isiah bogan. what jumps out if you look at this picture here that tattoo that reads blessed. the mother of the victim helped tip police in this case. she was out on friday, she actually saw bogan, tried to tackle him. she wasn't able to keep her hands on him, but she was able to distinguish this tattoo. now, again, police are out here this morning, searching for clues. looking for this man and trying to get their hands on him. of course, he is accused of

fly over the academy's graduation ceremony. well the national park service wants your input on the new world war i memorial on the national mall. you'll be able to visit that memorial in in pershing park. tonight, you can see what you -- you can say what you want it to look like. the park service is holding a meeting at 6:30 at the jones day offices on louisiana avenue northwest. police are trying to figure out who shot a 17-year-old in fairfax county. chopper 4 flew over the scene. that shooting happened last night in a townhouse complex on holly avenue. just off of government center parkway in fairfax. a white car was scene speeding away from the scene. the 17-year-old is expected to survive. police says this does not appear to be a random crime. 6:35 right now. cathy lanier says she won't make people explain why they want a permit to carry a concealed handgun. that follows a ruling from the

then everything that pops up will be as it relates to your car. every recall, not just the air bag. but the recall would be on there. they have now admitted to -- takata corporation admitted they have a defective air bag and they need to replace them. there's been a recall already in place that the government ordered but the trouble is now some of those air bags that were replaced may have been replaced with defective parts. so it's entirely possible now that you might have to get your air bag replaced yet again. this is a 34 million vehicle problem. it will take years to get all of these cars replaced. all of these air bags replaced. complicating matters if you had a 200,0000 car, you may have sold it and the problem is tracking down the owners. if you have a car 2000 to 2011 type in your v.i.n. number to

find out if you're involved. >> tom costello thank you. this just in to the live desk. the search for missing malaysian airlines flight 370 is widening. investigators are looking at a larger area now of the indian ocean floor. they're now saying if they don't find the jet there, they just don't know where else to look. the expanded zone covers 46,000 square miles, the size of pennsylvania. the jet mysteriously disappeared in march of last year en route from kuala lumpur to beijing. back to you, aaron. 6:47 right now. we are learning more about a mansion murder mystery here in the district. a couple and their housekeeper were beaten and stabbed in the home not far from the vice president's house. the couple's 10-year-old son was so badly burned they don't know how he died. they tried to see the surveillance video at that home, but the security cameras were disarmed.

county little league program is charged with distributing child pornography. police caught him in an online sting. 67-year-old donald essex exchanged images with an undercover d.c. officer. the documents show essex arranged to have sex with the undercover officer's 9-year-old daughter. the news4 i-team wants to keep you safe this memorial day weekend especially if you're headed to the beach. the i-team discovered a federal program that makes sure the water is safe enough for swimming is a regular target of congressional budget cuts. local health departments employ their employees collect water samples once a week. matt skilljoe says every year they worry that they're going to lose funding. >> recently, the funding has not been included in the federal budget. but through continuing resolutions and i believe congress reinstated the program back into the federal budget that we are going to have

announced they selected a top candidate, but that candidate has backed out. today the board will ask bowers to stay on as interim superintendent for one more year. bowers had planned to retire this year. well today the first lady and former senator elizabeth dole will honoring the people who care for our service members and veterans. dole's foundation is calling the caregivers hidden heroes and highlighting the enormous responsibility they take on every day. more than 70 caregivers will meet with members of congress about what can be done to make sure our service members and veterans have the support they need. michelle obama is not messing around with her gimme five campaign. look at the video she posted on twitter of her intense workout. using the punching bag right there. think of five ways you can be healthy and share them via social media. that's a hard exercise there. maybe a slight jab to her husband last week he posted a gimme five video showing him and joe biden running around the white house and different locations wearing the tie,
