sleeping, d.c. police ended the manhunt for a man they say killed a d.c. family and their housekeeper. daron wint behind bars this morning. you look at new video of the detectives and agents processing the scene where they arrested wint on rhode island avenue northeast. they pulled him over for a traffic stop. the search has taken investigators from d.c. to maryland and new york city and we're learning about a hotel connection in college park. megan mcgrath is tracking how police caught wint. megan? >> reporter: well, aaron, as you look over my shoulder here you can see police officers here are at the howard johnson's in college park. we have had officers here all night long keeping an eye on things. police thought that daron wint was actually in new york city and they hoped to make the arrest there. but they missed him. they then tracked him to maryland and sources tell news4 that the marshals received information that he could be found at the howard johnson's on route 1. now, the fugitive task force, they were preparing to move in, make that arrest. they had eyes on wint. that's when they saw him get

into the vehicle with several other people. u.s. marshals began to follow them and pulled them over on rhode island avenue in northeast washington. there are two vehicles involved in this. both were towed away, they have been impounded by police. that's one that's a sedan, the other is a small box truck. now wint has been charged with first degree murder in the deaths of the savopoulos family and their housekeeper, vera figueroa. the big break in the case came when police analyzed a pizza crust that was found at the crime scene. sources tell news4 that wint's dna was found on the pizza crust. that's when he was identified as the prime suspect in these murders and the manhunt began. the manhunt now over. he has been arrested. he's being questioned by police and is facing murder charges. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath in college park thanks. well there will be a wake today for vera figueroa the

housekeeper at the savopoulos home. last wednesday, figueroa texted a friend she would be working at the woodley park house. she came to the u.s. from el salvador to earn money before planning to retire next year. a viewing will be held at the francis jay collins funeral home in silver spring at 2:00 p.m. meanwhile, friends and family have set up a gofundme page to help pay for the funeral costs. donations will help the family send her body home by plane to el salvador for a proper burial. she leaves behind a husband and two children who still live in elle el salvador. you can find a link to the story on our washington app. and kristin wright will dig deeper to answer the question who is daron wint? including his connection to the savopoulos family. 6:04 now. jesse matthew heads back to court. he is accused of raping and beating a woman in 2005.

he will ask a judge to suppress any evidence in which the victim claims she recognizes him. his lawyers say the victim only gave a vague description of matthew. yesterday, the circuit court published the name of the victim on its website and two days ago i should say. it was removed several hours later after being seen by the public. firefighters are working to find out the cause of a fire at a house in prince george's county. chopper 4 captured the video on cold harbor drive. this is in accokeek last night. firefighters there are battling the blaze from above, soaking the house. heavy fire caused the side of it to partially collapse. the home is more than 3600 square feet and at this point we don't know if anybody was inside at the time of the fire. as we remember our fallen service members this weekend, the washington national cathedral is welcoming more than 200 members of rolling thunder. they're coming for the annual

breaking news at 6:15. quadruple murder suspect daron wint has been captured. he was arrested late last night during a traffic stop in northeast d.c. now police say that he held the savopoulos family and their housekeeper captive last wednesday into thursday inside their woodley park home. police believe wint killed the victims and then set their house on fire on thursday. we are digging into wint's past this morning including his criminal and work history that ties him to the savopoulos family. news4's kristin wright picks up that portion of the story from d.c. headquarters. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. todayice will have a lot of questions for daron wint as we

learn more about who the quadruple murder suspect is. wint was born in guyana. he was raised there. he moved to the u.s. in 2000. he joined the marines that same year. however, we're told he never finished basic training and received an honorable discharge for medical reasons. next comes the connection between wint and the savopoulos family. from 2003 to 2005, daron wint worked as a welder at savopoulos' company in american ironworkers in hyattsville, and one of his relatives was fired from the company. wint has a court record that includes a number of threats, a conviction for assaulting a woman in 2009. and an arrest in 2010. now, that happen at a gas station across the street from american iron works. police say wint was carrying an open container of beer and a machete and a b-b gun. his last known address is in

lanham, maryland. relatives live there now and police have searched that home. we know from sources that wint's dna was found on a piece of pizza crust at the crime scene and of course this morning we know that daron wint is charged with first degree murder while armed. that's the latest. now back to you in the studio. >> thank you. and the story does have a lot of moving parts and we want to take you to the beginning and break it down. last wednesday, d.c. police say daron wint held the savopoulos family and their housekeeper captive at their home northwest d.c. woodley park neighborhood. the next morning detectives say someone delivered $40,000 in cash to that house. hours after that cash drop-off, police say wint killed the victims and set fire to the house. and later that evening the family's car was torched in lanham maryland. the investigation follows a new face after the arrest. we'll let you know when he makes his first court appearance. we'll send you a push alert

through our nbc washington app. the bar will be set high if prosecutors want to file criminal charges for the deadly train derailment in philadelphia. experts say prosecutors will have to prove that amtrak engineer brandon bostian was intentionally negligent or distracted when it derailed. he used his cell phone but the lawyers say it was not during the train trip. bostian would not charged if it's ruled an accident. in the meantime, the senate democrats want to give them more money so they can address a maintenance and repair backlog. they say that backlog is compromising safety and service and they want to give amtrak $2 billion in su panel approved the spending bill the day after the crash, but could cut $251 billion from the budget if it passes. today a judge will decide if a former montgomery county school employee will stand trial

for sex abuse. robert wilson was a paraeducator at the middle school in silver spring. he helped the student with homework by phone and then started to meet her at school where the alleged abuse took place. the victim said they also met at her apartment building. a hearing will happen at 2:00 p.m. today. the man who set off a furor by landing his gyrocopter at the capitol said he wouldn't change a thing. douglas hughes has pleaded not guilty in federal court. if convicted of the charges against him, he faces more than nine years in prison. but the judge today relaxed the rules of his release. he's due back in court next wednesday. he says when it's all over, he'd like his gyrocopter back. dozens are remembering a police officer killed in nebraska. a vigil was held for detective kerry orozco last night in omaha. she was just 29 years old. she was shot while serving ach is warrant.

she was a day away from starting her time to be with her new child. she was the 25th officer in omaha to be killed in the line of duty. a d.c. woman is behind bars on charges she ran down another woman. chatara johnson is killed with involuntary month slaughter. according to charging documents johnson fled the scene and reported the car stolen. the victim's daughters say they're relieved the woman who killed their mother has been caught. >> well i'm excited, i'm happy. i'm glad she is arrested. but she ain't going to bring my mother back. >> i'm just mad, you know? angry because my mom is gone. >> johnson's brother in law who owns the car involved in the crash turned his sister-in-law in to the mis. a former korean air executive is out of jail after serving five months for her outburst over macadamian nuts.

"in touch weekly" published a police report that it claims describes charges against josh duggar. one of stars of tlcs "19 kids and counting." duggar apologized on facebook saying he acted inexcusably. he worked for the family research council which promotes traditional marriage. it's the latest twist for joe morrissey. he said he'll marry the 19-year-old mother of his son. morrissey and myrna pride say they want more children. morrissey lost his seat and served jail time after the relationship was discovered.

he won it back and lost it again when he moved out of the district. he's running for a state senate seat. investigators are trying to figure out what caused an oil pipe line to break. it sent more than 100,000 gallons into the water off the california coast. the operator of the broken pipeline says it may take weeks or even months to find out what went wrong. the pipe line company says some pump problems were detected at the time of that break, but still not clear if the problems were related to the spill. health officials in california are working to find out if raw tuna is to blame for a salmonella outbreak. 53 cases had been reported in nine states including virginia. 31 of the cases were reported in california and most of the people who fell ill reported eating sushi containing raw tuna. we're tracking breaking news involving the arrest of the man accused in the murders of a northwest washington family and their housekeeper. what we're learning about his arrest late last night and how police tracked him to new york

including what he was at doing before he was arrested. news4's megan mcgrath is in college park where police have been posted all night. what do we know megan? >> reporter: well if you look behind me you can see the two police cruisers just down the road a little bit. we have had officers on the scene all night long. we are at the howard johnson's on route 1 in college park. they have been assigned to just keep an eye on things here through the night. now, police thought that daron wint was in new york city but they missed him there. they got information and were able to track him to the maryland hotel. sources tell news4 that they received information, investigators did, that he could be found at the howard johnson's here on route 1. the fugitive task force was preparing to move in and make an arrest. when they saw wint get into a vehicle with several other people and u.s. marshals followed them. then they pulled that vehicle over on rhode island avenue in

police tracked him down in brooklyn by his phone. that's where his girlfriend lives. she spent most of yesterday talking to detectives from the new york city police department. she told police that wint was headed back to d.c. to possibly surrender. police eventually caught up with him in prince george's county and he was followed into d.c. last night up and he was pulled over on rhode island avenue northeast. with wint facing first degree charges as megan said even if he's convicted currently defendants cannot receive the death penalty in d.c. but if this raises to the federal level and u.s. prosecutors pursue federal capital murder charges then the jurisdiction doesn't matter. more on our team coverage of daron wint's arrest in a few minutes. what we're learning about his criminal background including his connection to the savopoulos family. if you can, take a second to take a look at these photos right here. federal investigators are searching for suspects who almost set the fires during the recent unrest in baltimore.

images of the buildings captivated the nation. there's an image of a man that they believe torched that cvs pharmacy on pennsylvania avenue. the suspects used materials they looted to start those fires. a baltimore grand jury has indicted all six baltimore police officers in the death of freddie gray. maryland state's attorney marilyn mosby announced the indictment at a short briefing yesterday. it's similar to the charges mosby announced weeks ago. some charges changed based on some new information, but mosby didn't share those details. the officers will be arraigned july 2nd. a man is recovering after being hit by rocks after a quarry quarry blast in loudoun county. it sent giant rocks crashing into homes businesses in a sterling neighborhood. huge chunks of debris fell through the house on to the empty bed. there was a guy sleeping in the exact same room, right on the
