a warm-up. let's check in with tom. >> we need some warming. it is chilly this morning. the promise of spring in the air. live view tower camera flaming sunrise in a clear sky this morning. no travel problems up and down 95 between here and new england. or heading south between here and florida. west you might be running into a few showers and another few hours in western pennsylvania and northern ohio. no travel problems weatherwise locally off to the clear start with dry pavement. a chill in the air, only in the 40s, nearby suburbs, most of the region will be quickly jumping into the 60s later on this morning. quite a chill. it will be nice at the beach, but chilly in the water. the chilliest day over the weekend will be saturday with the wind coming off that chilly water. it will only be in the 60s at the beaches. a little more humid on memorial day, but still comfortable. next weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:11. your bus stop forecast and what to wear this friday morning.

melissa is looking at the get away travel. >> get away day, virginia 95 southbound right now, not only getting away too quickly here. as you're approaching dale city. you can see the first 4 traffic tracker a bit slow through dale city because of earlier road work that jammed things up this morning. so we have a 3 1/2 mile backup southbound. before that and after that you're fine. volume looks quite a bit lighter than it does. hopefully, people are already out of the town. in the city, 295 a crash under the indian avenue overpass. two lanes are blocked. 66 into town, a tad slow near 50 because of the earlier accident but looks better than a couple of minutes ago. the bay bridge looking good. headed across it headed back over to annapolis. aaron? >> melissa, thank you. 6:01 and while you were

sleeping, d.c. police ended the manhunt for a man they say killed a d.c. family and their housekeeper. daron wint behind bars this morning. you look at new video of the detectives and agents processing the scene where they arrested wint on rhode island avenue northeast. they pulled him over for a traffic stop. the search has taken investigators from d.c. to maryland and new york city and we're learning about a hotel connection in college park. megan mcgrath is tracking how police caught wint. megan? >> reporter: well, aaron, as you look over my shoulder here you can see police officers here are at the howard johnson's in college park. we have had officers here all night long keeping an eye on things. police thought that daron wint was actually in new york city and they hoped to make the arrest there. but they missed him. they then tracked him to maryland and sources tell news4 that the marshals received information that he could be found at the howard johnson's on route 1. now, the fugitive task force, they were preparing to move in, make that arrest. they had eyes on wint. that's when they saw him get

into the vehicle with several other people. u.s. marshals began to follow them and pulled them over on rhode island avenue in northeast washington. there are two vehicles involved in this. both were towed away, they have been impounded by police. that's one that's a sedan, the other is a small box truck. now wint has been charged with first degree murder in the deaths of the savopoulos family and their housekeeper, vera figueroa. the big break in the case came when police analyzed a pizza crust that was found at the crime scene. sources tell news4 that wint's dna was found on the pizza crust. that's when he was identified as the prime suspect in these murders and the manhunt began. the manhunt now over. he has been arrested. he's being questioned by police and is facing murder charges. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath in college park thanks. well there will be a wake today for vera figueroa the

housekeeper at the savopoulos home. last wednesday, figueroa texted a friend she would be working at the woodley park house. she came to the u.s. from el salvador to earn money before planning to retire next year. a viewing will be held at the francis jay collins funeral home in silver spring at 2:00 p.m. meanwhile, friends and family have set up a gofundme page to help pay for the funeral costs. donations will help the family send her body home by plane to el salvador for a proper burial. she leaves behind a husband and two children who still live in elle el salvador. you can find a link to the story on our washington app. and kristin wright will dig deeper to answer the question who is daron wint? including his connection to the savopoulos family. 6:04 now. jesse matthew heads back to court. he is accused of raping and beating a woman in 2005.

he will ask a judge to suppress any evidence in which the victim claims she recognizes him. his lawyers say the victim only gave a vague description of matthew. yesterday, the circuit court published the name of the victim on its website and two days ago i should say. it was removed several hours later after being seen by the public. firefighters are working to find out the cause of a fire at a house in prince george's county. chopper 4 captured the video on cold harbor drive. this is in accokeek last night. firefighters there are battling the blaze from above, soaking the house. heavy fire caused the side of it to partially collapse. the home is more than 3600 square feet and at this point we don't know if anybody was inside at the time of the fire. as we remember our fallen service members this weekend, the washington national cathedral is welcoming more than 200 members of rolling thunder. they're coming for the annual

blessing of the bikes and part of the veterans initiative. the bikers will gather on walker court at 5:15 p.m. a lot of questions being raised about the man at the controls of that amtrak train when it derailed outside of philadelphia. we'll show you why prosecutors may have a tough time bringing charges against him. it is get away day for many the nastiest spots in the area already this morning. details are coming up. plus are you ready to make a

breaking news at 6:15. quadruple murder suspect daron wint has been captured. he was arrested late last night during a traffic stop in northeast d.c. now police say that he held the savopoulos family and their housekeeper captive last wednesday into thursday inside their woodley park home. police believe wint killed the victims and then set their house on fire on thursday. we are digging into wint's past this morning including his criminal and work history that ties him to the savopoulos family. news4's kristin wright picks up that portion of the story from d.c. headquarters. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. todayice will have a lot of questions for daron wint as we

learn more about who the quadruple murder suspect is. wint was born in guyana. he was raised there. he moved to the u.s. in 2000. he joined the marines that same year. however, we're told he never finished basic training and received an honorable discharge for medical reasons. next comes the connection between wint and the savopoulos family. from 2003 to 2005, daron wint worked as a welder at savopoulos' company in american ironworkers in hyattsville, and one of his relatives was fired from the company. wint has a court record that includes a number of threats, a conviction for assaulting a woman in 2009. and an arrest in 2010. now, that happen at a gas station across the street from american iron works. police say wint was carrying an open container of beer and a machete and a b-b gun. his last known address is in

lanham, maryland. relatives live there now and police have searched that home. we know from sources that wint's dna was found on a piece of pizza crust at the crime scene and of course this morning we know that daron wint is charged with first degree murder while armed. that's the latest. now back to you in the studio. >> thank you. and the story does have a lot of moving parts and we want to take you to the beginning and break it down. last wednesday, d.c. police say daron wint held the savopoulos family and their housekeeper captive at their home northwest d.c. woodley park neighborhood. the next morning detectives say someone delivered $40,000 in cash to that house. hours after that cash drop-off, police say wint killed the victims and set fire to the house. and later that evening the family's car was torched in lanham maryland. the investigation follows a new face after the arrest. we'll let you know when he makes his first court appearance. we'll send you a push alert

through our nbc washington app. the bar will be set high if prosecutors want to file criminal charges for the deadly train derailment in philadelphia. experts say prosecutors will have to prove that amtrak engineer brandon bostian was intentionally negligent or distracted when it derailed. he used his cell phone but the lawyers say it was not during the train trip. bostian would not charged if it's ruled an accident. in the meantime, the senate democrats want to give them more money so they can address a maintenance and repair backlog. they say that backlog is compromising safety and service and they want to give amtrak $2 billion in su panel approved the spending bill the day after the crash, but could cut $251 billion from the budget if it passes. today a judge will decide if a former montgomery county school employee will stand trial

for sex abuse. robert wilson was a paraeducator at the middle school in silver spring. he helped the student with homework by phone and then started to meet her at school where the alleged abuse took place. the victim said they also met at her apartment building. a hearing will happen at 2:00 p.m. today. the man who set off a furor by landing his gyrocopter at the capitol said he wouldn't change a thing. douglas hughes has pleaded not guilty in federal court. if convicted of the charges against him, he faces more than nine years in prison. but the judge today relaxed the rules of his release. he's due back in court next wednesday. he says when it's all over, he'd like his gyrocopter back. dozens are remembering a police officer killed in nebraska. a vigil was held for detective kerry orozco last night in omaha. she was just 29 years old. she was shot while serving ach is warrant.

she was a day away from starting her time to be with her new child. she was the 25th officer in omaha to be killed in the line of duty. a d.c. woman is behind bars on charges she ran down another woman. chatara johnson is killed with involuntary month slaughter. according to charging documents johnson fled the scene and reported the car stolen. the victim's daughters say they're relieved the woman who killed their mother has been caught. >> well i'm excited, i'm happy. i'm glad she is arrested. but she ain't going to bring my mother back. >> i'm just mad, you know? angry because my mom is gone. >> johnson's brother in law who owns the car involved in the crash turned his sister-in-law in to the mis. a former korean air executive is out of jail after serving five months for her outburst over macadamian nuts.

heather heather cho had that outburst earlier this year and she ordered a flight attendant off the flight because of the way she was served the nuts. her defense lawyer offered an apology. her sentence has been suspended for two years. it's a chilly 50 degrees outside our studios, but you see that guy back there? >> i know it's shining. >> going to do some work later on today. >> so great to see that sun back tom kierein. >> it is beaming down upon us. it will warm us quickly through the morning but you're right, it's quite chilly this morning. only in the upper 40s in montgomery county and fairfax county much of prince george's county is only around 50. inside the beltway just in the low 50s. low 50s by the bay and the rest of northern virginia it's in the mid to upper 40s. warren down to 44 right now. a lot of dew forming this morning.

i took this picture predawn here in northwest washington. dew covering the windshield and grassy areas now. storm team 4 radar no travel problems up and down 95 new england to florida. if you're headed out to the west you may run into the showers into parts of ohio and indiana. storm team 4 radar all clear. we have that sun coming up now. a live view from our tower camera in a clear sky. we'll be up into the low 50s by 8:00. by noon jumping to around 70. then we'll notice the breezes picking up as well. gusting 20 to 25 miles per hour. temperatures peaking in the mid and upper 70s by late afternoon. a few clouds coming in and sprinkles way out in the mountains. tomorrow morning, down to the low 50s. saturday bright and sunny. highs low to mid 70s. mild on sunday into the low 80s. getting a little more humid on monday but still comfortable humidity for memorial day and all the events in washington. it will be hot in the afternoon. plenty of sunshine. you'll need sun block and then as we get into tuesday, back to work and school.

hot and rather humid. it will feel like summertime around 90s. each afternoon we might have a few passing thundershowers rolling through. next weather and traffic on the 1s neighborhood highs today. that's coming up at 6:31. how are the roads now, melissa? >> right now another crash. it doesn't seem to be slowing things down too much. i wanted to show you this camera outer loop approaching b.w. overall looking good. 95 southbound, here through dale city, we have a 2 1/2 mile backup. first 4 traffic tracker is northbound after dale city. slow this as well. southbound route 1 still closed at prince william parkway. chopper 4 is over the scene there. a pedestrian was struck there. so still have a little bit of a closure there. wide look at things. overall, no major problems here as you kind of take a big look at the beltway. 270 here at old hundred road.

everything looking quite good as you head to hyattstown. seeing more volume headed northbound through the frederick area after you get out of germantown than we normally see. lots of folks getting out of town. >> thank you. 6:24 right now. a reality tv star has resigned from a conservative christian lobbying firm and claims -- amid claims that he molested young girls when he was a teenager. "in touch weekly" published a police report that it claims describes charges against josh duggar. one of stars of tlcs "19 kids and counting." duggar apologized on facebook saying he acted inexcusably. he worked for the family research council which promotes traditional marriage. it's the latest twist for joe morrissey. he said he'll marry the 19-year-old mother of his son. morrissey and myrna pride say they want more children. morrissey lost his seat and served jail time after the relationship was discovered.

he won it back and lost it again when he moved out of the district. he's running for a state senate seat. investigators are trying to figure out what caused an oil pipe line to break. it sent more than 100,000 gallons into the water off the california coast. the operator of the broken pipeline says it may take weeks or even months to find out what went wrong. the pipe line company says some pump problems were detected at the time of that break, but still not clear if the problems were related to the spill. health officials in california are working to find out if raw tuna is to blame for a salmonella outbreak. 53 cases had been reported in nine states including virginia. 31 of the cases were reported in california and most of the people who fell ill reported eating sushi containing raw tuna. we're tracking breaking news involving the arrest of the man accused in the murders of a northwest washington family and their housekeeper. what we're learning about his arrest late last night and how police tracked him to new york

breaking news as you wake up. today the man wanted for a brutal quadruple murder in northwest washington is waking up behind bars. police announcing late last night that they had daron wint in custody. he could make his first court appearance later today. late last night, he was spotted in prince george's county. >> they followed him into the district and pulled him over on rhode island avenue. wint killed savvas and savopoulos their 10-year-old son, and housekeeper, vera figueroa. he is charged with first degree murder while armed. storm team 4 is tracking cooler conditions. most of us steps out to

temperatures in the 40s or 50s. but you will see a warm-up in the hours ahead. meteorologist tom kierein here with highs you will see in your neighborhood. >> there's a promise of spring in the air this morning. live view from the storm team 4 capital camera. there's the dome shrouded in scaffolding, lit up by golden sunlight. there's senate park in the foreground. afternoon highs recovering nicely from the chill we have now. should be making it into the upper 70s, south and west maybe 80 near fredericksburg over to culpepper and warren town. around the bay, mid 70s. and near the pennsylvania border up near 70 degrees. shenandoah valueley it's beautiful there. a few clouds coming into the mountains later on this afternoon that might produce a sprinkle but elsewhere we will stay dry today. the chopper is up in the clear sky over that accident in woodbridge. what's going on with that? >> yeah, nasty crash in woodbridge. take a look at this.

chopper got to the scene a few minutes ago. this is southbound route 1 shut down there at prince william parkway where a pedestrian was struck that could be some time before they completely clear things out of the way there. looking better here. fingers crossed for everybody headed out of town. 95 southbound through dale city a 1 1/2 mile backup. then it kind of loosens up a bit. that's the earlier road work that did not get cleared out in in time. 95 northbound approaching the occoquan not too bad. 66 into town and out of town no issues. same thing when you look at 270 north and south and approaching b.w. parkway a little slow because of a crash off to the right side. back in ten minutes with travel times. breaking news, that manhunt is over for a quadruple murder suspect. daron wint is behind bars this morning. d.c. police arrested him during a traffic stop last night. you're looking at some new video of detectives searching the car he was riding in along with other people. there's still a lot of questions to answer and connections to make in this case.

including what he was at doing before he was arrested. news4's megan mcgrath is in college park where police have been posted all night. what do we know megan? >> reporter: well if you look behind me you can see the two police cruisers just down the road a little bit. we have had officers on the scene all night long. we are at the howard johnson's on route 1 in college park. they have been assigned to just keep an eye on things here through the night. now, police thought that daron wint was in new york city but they missed him there. they got information and were able to track him to the maryland hotel. sources tell news4 that they received information, investigators did, that he could be found at the howard johnson's here on route 1. the fugitive task force was preparing to move in and make an arrest. when they saw wint get into a vehicle with several other people and u.s. marshals followed them. then they pulled that vehicle over on rhode island avenue in

northeast washington. and they made the arrest without incident. now, we are learning that there are two vehicles actually that are part of this. there was a sedan and there's a small box truck. both of those vehicles were towed away by police and are impounded and are now part of this criminal investigation. wint has been charged in the deaths of the savopoulos family and their housekeeper, vera figueroa. the big break of course coming in this case when police analyzed a pizza crust that was found at the crime scene. sources say that wint's dna was founden that kr-- found on that crust. that of course sparked the manhunt. that search now over as daron wint is in police custody. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath for us live, thanks so much. this morning we are learning that wint's cell phone led investigators to new york. they say some time after he torched the savopoulos family's porsche last week he got on a bus to new york city.

police tracked him down in brooklyn by his phone. that's where his girlfriend lives. she spent most of yesterday talking to detectives from the new york city police department. she told police that wint was headed back to d.c. to possibly surrender. police eventually caught up with him in prince george's county and he was followed into d.c. last night up and he was pulled over on rhode island avenue northeast. with wint facing first degree charges as megan said even if he's convicted currently defendants cannot receive the death penalty in d.c. but if this raises to the federal level and u.s. prosecutors pursue federal capital murder charges then the jurisdiction doesn't matter. more on our team coverage of daron wint's arrest in a few minutes. what we're learning about his criminal background including his connection to the savopoulos family. if you can, take a second to take a look at these photos right here. federal investigators are searching for suspects who almost set the fires during the recent unrest in baltimore.

images of the buildings captivated the nation. there's an image of a man that they believe torched that cvs pharmacy on pennsylvania avenue. the suspects used materials they looted to start those fires. a baltimore grand jury has indicted all six baltimore police officers in the death of freddie gray. maryland state's attorney marilyn mosby announced the indictment at a short briefing yesterday. it's similar to the charges mosby announced weeks ago. some charges changed based on some new information, but mosby didn't share those details. the officers will be arraigned july 2nd. a man is recovering after being hit by rocks after a quarry quarry blast in loudoun county. it sent giant rocks crashing into homes businesses in a sterling neighborhood. huge chunks of debris fell through the house on to the empty bed. there was a guy sleeping in the exact same room, right on the

welcome back. more of you use mass transit to get to work than any other form of transportation. that's according to a new report from the university of michigan. this studied how people commute

in the district. i believe this is people who live in the city. more than 38% of you use mass transit. 13% of you walk to work but less than 1% cycle to work. the report also revealed the average longest commute time is about 29 minutes. >> i thought there would be more cyclists. you may see some serious delays on metro. five of the six lines will be impacted by track word. yellow, blue, orange and silver lines will run every 24 minutes. to see all of the scheduled changes head on over to the nbc washington app. metro is going to open up around 7:00 a.m. on memorial day. >> weekend, holiday schedule. >> yeah. >> lots of folks getting around for the holidays. >> that's right. i have been seeing so many pictures of social media with traffic at a stand still. they left so early this morning.

15 before the hour. breaking news, the manhunt for daron wint is over. the man accused of murdering a northwest d.c. family and their housekeeper waking up behind bars. after tracking him from d.c. to maryland to new york d.c. police arrested wint during a traffic stop in northeast. >> news4's kristin wright is digging deeper into his criminal background background. >> but we begin with megan mcgrath and why the investigation has now stretched to college park. megan? >> reporter: well good morning. things began to unfold quickly late last night. a source tells news4 that the u.s. marshals received information that daron wint could be found at the howard johnson's hotel on route 1 in college park. the fugitive task force went to the hotel last night. they had eyes on wint but before they could arrest him, he hopped into a car with some other people and they drove away.

marshals followed and ultimately they pulled the vehicle over on rhode island avenue in northeast washington. daron wint was arrested. he's been charged with first degree murder. in the deaths of the savopoulos family and their housekeeper vera figueroa. now, the murder sparked an intense manhunt that went across several states. law enforcement all around the area were on alert, looking for wint. that manhunt is now over. the search is over. daron wint has been arrested. he's now facing first degree murder charges. back to you in the studio. >> thank you. for two years daron wint worked as a welder at the american iron works. savvas savopoulos was ceo of that company. we spoke to workers at the company and wint didn't have a good reputation among his former co-workers. no word yet if wint's former work history could be a motive for the savopoulos murders. in the meantime, we are digging into his criminal and military
