this morning it could feel and look like rush hour all day. news 4 midday begins right now. we begin with the major development of four people in northwest washington. daron wint is in jail right now waiting for his first appearance in court. police named wint as the suspect late wednesday after using dna to link him to the house where four people were killed. police arrested wint after tracking him to a hotel in college park. news 4's megan mcgrath has been at that hotel all morning and has more on the activity at the scene. but we begin with news 4's kristin wright live in d.c. at the superior court here with wherein a few hours we expect wint to appear. kristen? >> reporter: that's right. daron wint is expected to appear before a judge charge with first degree murder while armed. now we have learned that this was an intense manhunt. captured. daron wint behind bars ending a manhunt from washington to new

york and back. u.s. marshals used phone records to track wint. they pulled him over guns drawn on rhode island avenue in northeast d.c. late thursday. wint reportedly in a white chevy cruise following a box truck. nbc news reports at least $10,000 cash was found in the truck. wint was arrested without incident one week after the brutal murders of savvas and amy savopoulos their son phillip and housekeeper have a figueroa. their bodies found in the savopoulos' burning northwest d.c. mansion. the fire intentionally set to cover up the killings. evidence not destroyed, wint's dna on a pizza crust, sources say. there is a connection between the 34-year-old suspect and a vas savopoulos. wint was a welder for savopoulos's business from 2003 to 2005 and one of wint's relatives was fired from the company. details are also emerging about the quadruple murder suspect's

past run ins with the law. wint's record also includes assault charges, carrying a machete near the savopoulos' business back in 2010 and also three protective orders issued against him. now we've also learned this morning that four other people were arrested with wint last night. live at d.c.'s superior court, kristen wright news 4. >> thank you, kristen. this afternoon there is a wake for one of the victims of the mansion murders, vera figueroa was a housekeeper at the savopoulos home. last wednesday she texted a friend that she'd be working at the woodley park home. the next day police found her body with the families inside the house. a viewing will be held at the francis j. collins funeral home at 2:00 p.m. at 111:15 hear how the savopoulos family is dealing with the arrest. meanwhile, we're expecting to

on july 2. and today jesse matthew heads back to court in fairfax county. matthew is accused of raining and brutally beating a woman in fairfax city in 2005. he will ask the judge to suppress evidence in which the victim claim she is recognizes him. his lawyers say the victim only gave a vague description of matthew. on wednesday, the fairfax county circuit court published the name of the victim on their web site. it was removed several hours later after being seen by the public. as we remember our fallen service member this is memorial day weekend, the washington national cathedral is prepping more than 200 members of rolling thunder. they're coming for the annual blessing of the bikes, part of the cathedral's veterans initiative. they will gather on the walker court at 5:15. an apology and job change for a member of the duggar family accused of inappropriate behavior as a teen. the family famous for their conservative show on their reality show "19 kids and

resigned from a conservative christian lobbying firm amid claims he molested young girls when he was a teenager. "in touch" weekly published a 2006 report that it claims describes charges against josh duggar of tlc's "19 kids and counting." duggar apologized on facebook saying he "acted inexcusebly." he said he spoke to authorities and went to counseling and made his wife aware before they were engaged. duggar worked for the family research council which promotes traditional marriage. the council says it wasn't aware of the allegations and says stepping down is best for the gug family. poles are open in ireland as the country heads to vote on legalizing same-sex marriage. if the irish vote in favor, it will become the first country to approve it by a referendum. polls are leading in favor of a country amending its constitution to give same-sex couples the same marriage rights at opposite-sex couples. the catholic church is

back to that developing story on the murder of four people in northwest d.c. the man suspected of murder daron wint is expected to make his court appearance some time soon here. police named dwintwint as a suspect late tuesday. they found him at a motel in college park and arrested him in northeast washington. police are expected to return to the howard johnson in college park some time today. megan mcgrath is there. tell us what's going on right now. >> reporter: right now everybody is in a stand-by mode. we are expecting investigators to return to the motel later on to look at one of the rooms here. yesterday the fugitive task force thought daron wint was in new york city but they just missed him. then they got information he was here at this howard johnson in college park. u.s. marshals followed him from the motel into northeast washington. that's when they moved in and arrested not only wint but several other people.

they also recovered a very large amount of cash. the howard johnson's in college park is filled with families in town for the university of maryland graduation. some found it unsettling that a wanted murderer was staying in the same motel. >> i guess we were fortunate not to have a run in with him. >> reporter: the fugitive task force tracked daron dylon wint to the howard johnson's last night, but before u.s. marshals could make an arrest he got into a chevy cruze with some other people and drove away. also on the move with wint, a small box truck. u.s. marshals followed and a few miles down the road in northeast washington they boxed in the car and the truck on rhode island avenue. daron wint did not resist. he was arrested along with a number of people including a few women. police found at least $10,000 in the box truck. the arrest ends an intense manhunt that stretched all the way to new york city and there is a sense of relief.

>> horrifying that these type of people are around and i'm glad he was arrested. >> reporter: the family of savvas amy, and 10-year-old phillip savopoulos released a statement saying "we are thankful to law enforcement who have worked so diligently to bring about an arrest in this case. while it does not abate our pain we hope it restores a sense of calm and security to our neighborhood and to our city." and you can see the prince george's county police cruiser parked outside the howard johnson's. we've had a police officer or two here throughout the night keeping an eye on things and we are expecting investigators to return to the motel to look at the room see if there's any evidence that should be collected in this case. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, megan. for two years daron wint worked as a welder at american iron works. savvas savopoulos was ceo of that company. we'll have more on that connection coming up at 11:30. >> i'm angie goff at the live

overnight hours. coming up in less than ten minutes, a close look at your memorial day weekend forecast. just how hot it will be by the time memorial day rolls around. as you start to finalize those memorial day plans, you may face serious delays on metro. five of the six lines will be impacted by track work on saturday and sunday trains on the yellow, blue orange and silver lines will run every 24 minutes. on monday trains on the yellow and blue will l run every 18 minutes. to see those schedule changes, head toe the nbc washington ann. metro opens at 7:00 a.m. on monday memorial day. it's important to remember what memorial day really stands for. arlington national cemetery is a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by our troops. this morning, a quarter of a million flags stand in front of each headstone at the cemetery. more than 1,000 members of the third u.s. infantry regiment, the old guard, as it's called, placed the flags with precision. the soldiers place each flag

right now, the senate is frantically trying to wrap up three big-ticket items before members leave town on break. we start with the controversial trade bill that's pitted president obama against high-profile members of his own party and trade unions. today the bill's supporters hope the fend off hostile amendments and send the bill to the house. the senate also needs to make a deal to renew the patriot act and renew authorities spending money fixing highways and bridges. both bills are up against june 1 deadlines. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused

an oil pipeline to break that sent more than 100,000 gallons of oil into the water off the california coast. the operator of the broken pipeline says it may take weeks or months to find out what went wrong. the pipeline company says pump problems were detected at the time of the break but it's not clear if the problems were related to the spill. it's the latest twist in the saga of former virginia joe morrissey. he mow says he will marry the 19-year-old mother of his son. morrissey and myrna say they want more children. she was a minor when they became involved. morrissey lost his seat after their relationship was discovered. morrissey is now running for senate as an independent. the man suspects of killing a d.c. family and their housekeeper may have had help. after the break, who was with daron wint when he was arrested last night and what you can

we expect daron wint to make his first court appearance some time later today. the manhunt for the quadruple murder suspect spanned several jurisdictions and took investigators from d.c. to new york. late last night, a fugitive task force spotted the suspect leaving a howard johnson hotel in college park maryland. they followed wint into the district and pulled him over on rhode island avenue in northeast

d.c. he is now charged with first degree murder while armed. d.c. police say wint killed savvas and amy savopoulos their ten-year-old son and their housekeeper in their woodley park home last week. news 4's kristen wright is live at d.c. superior court and has more on wint's first court appearance. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, barbara, that's right. daron wint is expected to appear for the first time before a judge this afternoon. right now he is in jail. daron wint was captured last night. u.s. marshals and police used phone records to track wint. they first spotted him, as barbara mentioned, at a hotel in college park tailed him for five miles, about 20 fugitive task force vehicles and a helicopter. then they surrounded wint on rhode island avenue in northeast d.c. late last night. wint reportedly new a white chevy cruze following a box truck. nbc news reports that at least

the connection between suspect daron wint and the savopoulos family. as kristen just mentioned, for two years wint worked as a welder at american iron works. savvas savopoulos was ceo of that company. we spoke to workers at the company and they said wint couldn't get along with anybody when he worked there. what kind of worker was he? >> ever the truth? he couldn't get along with anybody. >> it floored me. >> in 2010 wint was arrested across the street in the company at a shell gas station. he was carrying a backpack with a two-foot-long mamachete, a bb gun and an open beer. we've also learned that a relative of wint's was fired from american iron works at some point. also daron wint could make his first court appearance as we've been hearing all this morning, it any time now. we're keeping an eye on that for you and we'll send out a push alert to your phone with the nbc

amending its constitution to give same-sex couples the same rights as opposite sex couples. the catholic church is spearheading a campaign against same-sex marriage. the president of the boy scouts says he wants the organization to reconsider a ban on gay scout leaders. nbc's pete williams has more on the battle ahead and who is already defying the ban. >> the bottle the boy scouts face -- >> reporter: after a bruising battle two years ago led to ending the ban on admitting gay young people to the scouts robert gates, the former defense secretary who's president of the boy scouts says the organization must now accept that public attitudes are changing even more quickly. he says the current policy that still bans gay scout leaders will not survive. >> we must deal with the world as it is not as we might wish it would be. the status quo in our movements' membership standards cannot be sustained. >> reporter: the greater new york council is already defying the ban. just last month hiring pascal

right now, new details about an arrest in that quadruple murder in d.c. daron wint is behind bars charged in the killing of savvas amy and phillip savopoulos and their housekeeper

vera figueroa. last night, police surrounded the white car wint was riding in on north avenue in northeast. police also seized a box truck traveling with him. inside they found at least $10,000 in cash. in addition to wint d.c. police arrested three males and two females who were in the car and truck. new developments by the hour in this case. we want to take you back to the beginning now, last wednesday d.c. police say daron wint held the savopoulos family and their housekeeper captive at their west d.c. woodley park neighborhood. the next morning, detectives say someone delivered $40,000 in cash to the house. hours after the cash dropped, police say wint killed the victims and then set fire to the home. late that evening police found the family's porsche torched in new carrollton maryland. police say some time after that wint travel bid bus to new york city. earlier this morning we received a statement from the savopoulos family. they said in part "we're thankful to law enforcement who have worked so diligently to bring about an arrest in this

case. while it does not abate our pain, we hope it begins to restore a sense of calm and security to our neighborhood and our city." the family also asked for privacy as they grieve. there will be a wake today for the housekeeper killed at the savopoulos home. vera figueroa was supposed to finish her work day last wednesday afternoon but the next day police found her body beaten and stabbed inside that burned home. figueroa came to the u.s. from el salvador to earn money before planning to retire next year. a viewing will be held at the francis j. collins funeral home in silver spring starting at 2:00 this afternoon. friends and family have set up a go fund me page to help pay for funeral costs for her. the family wants to send figueroa's body home to el salvador for a proper burial. she leaves behind a husband and two children. the children live in el salvador. you can find a link to the go fund me page on the story on the nbc washington app. this story of course has a lot of moving parts. we have a full timeline of the events leading up to daron wint's arrest on the nbc

if you didn't know tomorrow is world turtle day. my son will be very excited. the smithsonian's national zoo is celebrating with a new addition. look at this. for the first time a rare spider tortoise hatched in the reptile discovery center. the tiny turtle is a critically endangered species. zoo staff have been closely monitoring it since it hatched on may 10. we don't know the sex of the turtle yet. if it continues to progress well it will be on exhibit this summer. pretty cute. and if you're heading to the
