ur holiday weekend is over. outside this morning, a beautiful sky overhead. and a couple of clouds around a few hours ago. those are clearing on out. 62 downtown at the airport. 61 manassas. 54 gaithersburg. your morning planner to finish out the first half of the saturday morning, temperatures to rise in the upper 60s by lunchtime. low 70 stz for most of the afternoon with a light northwesterly breeze. perfect grilling weather tonight. sun doesn't go down until 8:20 this evening. great weather for all of the rolling thunder activities. now to a developing story in d.c. new information in the murders of a d.c. family and their housekeeper. prosecutors say daron wint did not act alone when he held the savopoulos family against their will. >> their captors held the family

until someone delivered $40,000 in cash to the house. they're now looking for the possible accomplices. derrick ward is live with more on this unfolding investigation. we noticed the crime team is still up derrick. >> reporter: well indeed this is still a crime scene. even though that crime occurred a week last thursday. you know there was enough evidence yielded here to lead to the arrest and murder charge against one person. authorities probably think they can find more here. what would they be looking for? well that could be spelled out in court documents. court documents are associated with the first court appearance of the person that was arrested in this case. let's take you back. one thing those documents say is that this crime required the presence and assistance of more than one person. now, at this point, daron wint is the only named suspect. he was arrested thursday one week after the crime after he and a group of people two males and three women were stopped as they crossed into the district

from college park. they've been under police surveillance. there was at least $10,000 in cash in one of those vehicles. and a woman who was with wint when he was arrested said she had purchased money orders under the direction of yet another person who was supplying the cash. now, none of the other people taken into custody have been charged or named. and there's also the issue of the red car. this is a car that was in the garage that was supposedly the point of delivery for that cash. even the witness' testimony of that car and delivery of the cash have changed since investigators first started talking to that person. so this case is anything but over. daron wint is held without bail. he's due back in court on june 23rd. he is facing a murder charge. live in northwest, derrick ward news4. >> thanks. and wint's capture was a collaborative law enforcement effort. that included the new york city police department. take a look at the surveillance video we got. it showed more than a dozen u.s.

martialsshals searching wint's girlfriend's home in brooklyn. he travelled to brooklyn following the murders, they say. inside they found his cell phone. wint's girlfriend has not been charged. meanwhile, back in our region authorities returned to the howard johnson hotel in college park and it's where police believed wint stayed after returning from brooklyn and before his arrest. crime scene searched one room and collected several bags of evidence. we're keeping you up-to-date on every step of this investigation. check out the nbc washington app for the complete charging documents. we posted them. those are the charging documents for suspect daron wint. new this morning, police are looking into a double shooting that killed one man and hurt a woman in southeast d.c. the shooting happened late last night on irving street. not far from the parkway in southeast. the man died at the hospital. the woman was shot in the stomach. no word on her condition. police have not released any

right now people in parts of texas, arkansas and oklahoma are preparing for flash flooding. heavy rain is expected to fall

in the area. emergency crews are in wichita falls, texas, on standby to rescue people from the high water. right now crews are pumping water away from neighborhoods and into the wichita river. they hope to delay the flooding as long as possible. two california state beaches closed this memorial day weekend because of a huge oil spill. it's leaking from an underground pipe in santa barbara. one dolphin and five pelicans have been found dead. the spill covers five square miles. blocking a bill that would extend the national security agency's collection data program. the vote was 57-42. that's short of the 60 vote threshold to move ahead. key provisions are set to expire on junds 1e 1st if not renewed. they will try again to pass the bill. the house overwhelmingly passed

the act last week. it also would extend two other expiring surveillance provisions used frequently by the fbi. larry hogan vetoed several bills including three that would impact felonies online travel services and marijuana. hogan rejected a bill that would have allowed thousands of people on probation or parole to vote. he also vetoed a measure that would include travel companies to pay the same sales tax that customers are charged for booking hotel rooms. and he rejected measures to decriminalize smoking marijuana in public. so just watch this video. do you know what that is? >> it looks like a gigantic hole in a golf course. >> uh-huh. a hole in one has a whole new meaning at this golf course in missouri. we'll explain what happened and why. plus the new service helping you get back and forth to ocean city this summer. all you need is your phone.

welcome back. investigators are working to figure out what caused this massive fire in prince george's county. this video was shot as firefighters arrived on the scene thursday night. the $400,000 home was engulfed in flames when firefighters

showed up. the roof ended up collapsing. the house was a total loss. no one was inside. even the worst golfers among us could probably sink this one. >> yep. >> take a look at this hole. a massive sinkhole opened up on a course in branson, missouri yesterday morning. get this. if you put a camera in there, 100 feet deep and the thing is growing. officials say the recent heavy rain may have caused a cave below the course to actually cave in. how scary. >> wow. just head back to the clubhouse. >> that's right. well a military plane goes off the runway and plunging into the san diego bay. >> the pilot overshot the runway while trying to land during a training exercise. many ran to help and saved the pilot's life. >> reporter: only half submerged in the water. the canopies detached before he

ejected. but the rest was intact. visitors were startled from their holiday activities by what sounded like an explosion. >> heard a loud bang. >> i saw a parachute landing in the water. >> you see a big black, could be a person just hit the water hard. >> reporter: around 2:00 friday afternoon, the pilot attempted to land on runway 29. witnesses saw from higher ground the end of the runway painted with skid marks and the sand had deep wheel marks. this was a training exercise and they're identifying the crash as a mishap. >> standard routine training that was taking place in advance of aircraft carrier landing qualification. >> reporter: the pilot ejected safely and landed in the bay. a boater fished him out of the water in a matter of minutes. >> oh my god. it was like what the hell is going on? another war going on?

>> ouch. >> i was just worried about the pilot. i just hope they were okay. >> reporter: the pilot was treated and released from the hospital even before the plane was pulled from the bay. it was pulled out of the water much more delicately than when it went in. >> i'll say. that was dave somers reporting. you can now take an uber to the beach. uber will offer a ride to beachgoers this memorial day weekend. the company will also provide service in more than 20 other beach towns along the east coast. uber says it will constantly evaluate demand to determine whether its services this summer should be just seasonal or year round. >> okay. so today those outdoor pools, yea, they're opening up in montgomery county. the county's seven outdoor pools will open up at noon today. the cost is $7 on the weekends and $4 for children 18 years of age and under. for you adults out there the

earlier this morning. that's part of the same reason we were so cool. there were parts of northern maryland even upper montgomery county spots were in the upper 30s this morning. now with a full sunshine out there and a light north breeze temperatures have responded quite nicely. we're now at 62 degrees at reagan national. still a couple of 50s on the map. frederick, maryland 55. gaithersburg 55. annapolis in the upper 50s. down towards the south, 60 now in fredricksburg. if you're headed south today, pack your patience. hourly temperatures will climb up into the low and mid-70s. our high in washington today right around 74 degrees with a light northwesterly breeze. there's that little hint of snow across far northern maine headed out to the canadian maritimes. if you're headed out to halifax later today, plan on an extra layer of warmth. more severe weather and heavy rain across parts of the plains

well doctors call it resting angry face. you may know it by another name. >> i'm just learning about this. but it describes someone whose natural facial expression just looks unhappy. plastic surgery can give these people more confidence and it might affect the way other people treat them.

doreen gentzler reports. >> reporter: this is 67-year-old donna anderson right before she had surgery. and this is her today. can you see the difference? >> i looked tired. people would say something to me about are you okay or what's also told the corners of her mouth turned town making her look like she was the time. >> it's a good day. it's a beautiful day like today and you're thinking how could things get any better. oh but they think i'm not enjoying the day. so does that make them hesitant to come to me? does it make them hesitant to speak to me? >> according to a new study, that might be the case. doctors gathered photos of 30 female patients. some who had had plastic surgery and some who hadn't. a group of people rated the pictures for likability. and found those who had surgery done on their faces to widen their eyes and lift their mouths were rated as more socially skilled and trustworthy.

>> i think there are the resting neutral facial expressions that ultimately end up kind of conveying an emotion that you're probably not expressing or not intending to express. >> reporter: dr. michael riley at georgetown university hospital. he says some people naturally look angry even when they're not. it's a phenomenon called resting angry face and that can affect the way that they're viewed by others. >> the way you might be treated differently if you walk into a store and the corners of your lips are turned down it may be different than if you walk in and you look like you're happy to be there. >> reporter: and that's exactly what was happening to donna. she says she was tired of people asking her what was wrong all the time. so she underwent surgery to lift her eyes and tighten the skin under her chin. after that she says things began to change. she recalls one trip to home depot, a store that she typically dreads visiting.

taking a look at today's top stories. the main suspect in the murders of a d.c. family and their housekeeper did not act alone. that revelation came during daron wint's first court appearance in the district. more coming up on that in a few minutes. right now the i-95 express lanes in virginia are running southbound. they will stay southbound until 2:00 this afternoon. tomorrow morning those express lanes will shut down for six hours for the rolling thunder freedom ride. the shutdown will happen from 7:00 in the morning until 1:00 in the afternoon. if you use the express lanes, expect to pay some higher tolls. right now we are looking at 30

thunder alley opens up at noontime. perfect for motorcycling around the town. the ride will be tomorrow at noon. great day for memorial day celebrations on monday. seven-day forecast, beach weather. >> chuck, thanks. a developing story in d.c. prosecutors say daron wint did not act alone when he held the savopoulos family and their housekeeper. court documents revealed the crime required the presence and assistance of more than one person. the captors held that family until someone delivered $40 thourkss$40,000 cash to the home. mark segraves has more. >> reporter: documents showed the home invasion started three days before the fire. there was a flurry of phone calls and text messages between the father savvas savopoulos and his personal assistant and at least one other person about the delivery of the money. and prosecutors say savopoulos'

assistant changed his story about when he was first called by savopoulos and how he delivered the money. >> mr. wint is now incarcerated and he's held without bond but our work is not done. we will continue to investigate this case and bring all charges that are appropriate in the coming weeks. >> reporter: mark segraves, news4. >> and the week-long manhunt offers some closure. but there are still a lot of questions. we have put together a timeline of what we know so far. find that on our nbc washington app. the man convicted of killing an intern will -- guandique was indicted in 2010. testimony they say was false and misleading. prosecutors say they're still confident in his conviction and

they're preparing if ar new trial. a charles county mother is under investigation after she was found pushing her dead 3-year-old son in a swing. deputies got a call friday about the woman pushing a child on a swing for a long time. they noticed right away that the toddler was not alive. deputies say there was no obvious sign of trauma and they're working to determine a time of the death. new this morning, both sides say ireland is on track to legalize same-sex marriage making it the first country to do so at the ballot box. election workers are still counting the votes in the referendum. ireland doesn't have electronic voting. so we will have to wait for the final results to come in later today. irish men and women from around the world traveled to ireland for the referendum. turnout could top 60% for the first time since the country narrowly voted to legalize divorce in 1995. here's a feel good story on

"19 kids & counting" show after allegations against the duggar family. josh duggar allegedly molested several young girls. here's more on how the decades' old allegations are coming to light. >> reporter: the network that made them famous tlc has now pulled the show "19 kids & counting" effective immediately. allegations involving the high profile family were first revealed by "in touch" magazine in a police report. after a request of one of the minor victims, a court reported that expunged. duggar was accused of repeatedly molesting underage girls while they slept in 2002 and 2002. josh duggar a now married father of three said in a statement. 12 years ago as a young teenager i act inexcusably finish which i

am extremely sorry and extremely regret. according to the report his father first learned of the allegations in 2002. after an incident in 2002 he sought help from church elders be did not call the police. the report says josh duggar was called away for four months for and then he asked a state trooper to speak to this son. an investigation was filed in 2006 after someone contacted the oprah winfrey show which passed along the information. but the statute of limitations had run out and no charges were filed. two weeks ago before this surfaced i interviewed the family. tlc has not responded to questions about whether it was aware of the allegations. but now says it is saddened and troubled. in a statement jim bob and michelle duggar said their son made some very bad mistakes and

well this memorial day weekend we're remembering those who have died for our country. more than 58,000 american service members were killed just in vietnam alone. >> 40 years later, those who served and survived are returning to the country. news4's chris gordon recently traveled to the city formerly known as saigon. >> reporter: vietnam was my generation's war.

tens of thousands of americans were killed or wounded. there were supporters of the war and vocal opponents. large numbers of protesters participating in demonstrations demanding the u.s. get out of vietnam. it has been 40 years since the fall of saigon. i came with a camera to see what vietnam is like under communism now. and to find out what the vietnamese think of americans. >> they undehat american people not make the war in vietnam. just some people like some the government that time like nixon. >> reporter: u.s. veterans visiting vietnam try to come to grips with the past. >> i found myself to be more being here. >> reporter: the united states fought to stop the spread of communism in southeast asia. it was the first war the u.s. lost. the vietnamese don't call it the vietnam war. they call it the american war. u.s. military superiority was

out-maneuvered by guerrilla warfare. small groups of vietcong fighters would ambush u.s. troops and then disappear through rabbit hole entrances into underground tunnels like those here just outside of saigon. it's a real jungle battlefield that now attracts u.s. veterans who once fought here. >> i felt the war shouldn't have been fought. we had no business being there. and it's just the way it is. a lot of people died for nothing. >> reporter: i experienced how hard a time u.s. troops had trying to clear these tunnels. i took a camera as i crawled through a small, hot, dark section of 20 meters of the tunnel. i was soon disoriented. by the time i got out, my shirt was soaked with sweat and i was losing my voice. more than 12 million people now live and work in ho chi minh city. roads are crowded with scooters.

today you can commemorate memorial day. the celebration begins in a few minute in vienna virginia. at the learning center in lan dover, maryland as well. then at noon head over to the parade in the lowgan circle. well a bizarre slow speed chase in los angeles ends in an even more bizarre way. a man refused to obey police commands as he slowly drove his car through the streets like he was on a victory lap. >> reporter: police repeatedly tried to get him to stop. >> i need you to stop the car. we need to have a conversation. >> reporter: for some reason the

driver rolled slowly out of north ridge. ending in sherman oaks with a good samaritan stepping into the street and blocking the convertible. the driver gave up and with guns drawn, levy was walked over to the patrol car by the good samaritan. people were stunned wh enthe samaritan ended in cuffs too. >> the guy that stopped the car got arrested. i don't understand why that happened. >> the other guy got involved. that's why he's in the back of the police car, unfortunately. i feel bad. i kind of feel like they should have let him go. >> reporter: lapd lately released him citing a mixup over warrants. last words from levy. >> i love america. i love this country. >> reporter: and bistanders praising the good samaritan. >> i hope they give him a reward
