ash, but six months later, safety changes at montgomery county airport are on hold indefinitely. >> a mother and two young children were killed in the home. three others on the plane also died. in the days after there was a major push to reduce flights at that small airport but scott mcfarland learned no changes have been made since the accident. he's in gaithersburg tonight to explain why. >> reporter: for months community groups in this area formally asked montgomery county and the federal aviation administration to reduce the number of training flights and late night flights at the airport they say to reduce the chance of another crash but officials tell news 4 the reductions will not happen not in the foreseeable future. a flurry of activity at montgomery county airport this memorial day. series of taxis, touchdowns and takeoffs. the homeowners who live nearby say it's some of the training

flights they worry about. >> some of them come out here and obey the flight guidelines that we ask without any qualm. but a high percentage or too high a percentage just are cowboys. >> reporter: the december crash did not involve a training pilot nor has the cause been revealed. officials made headlines recently publicly discussing the possibility of cutting those training and late night flights here under pressure of nearby homeowners. >> who's going to be next? it's not a matter of if. it's a matter of when. >> reporter: that county review is on hold indefinitely until federal investigators complete a lengthy review of what caused the crash. and federal aviation administration officials say they too, won't order changes until that investigation is complete. and then they told news 4 this. because the county airport receives millions of dollars of federal grant money, it can't cut those flights.

that the county has a, quote, obligation to allow use of the airport by all types, kinds and classes of activity. to do so first requires a series of lengthy studies and alternative plans be completed and that could take years which means the operations of this airport are unchanged. neighbors here say the government need nt wait so long to at least begin >> this won't go away. >> reporter: the home of which was crashed is demolished just an empty lot and teddy bears and ribbons for the family that died. general aviation pilots say this airport is safe for flying. we'll see what the feds say. jim, back to you. >> thanks scott. the man accused of killing a d.c. family and stealing $40,000 may have used some of that money for cab fare from new york to d.c. according to "the new york daily

news" wint paid $1,000 for a cabbie for a ride from brooklyn to here in the district. nbc news has not independently confirmed that report. but wint was finally arrested here in northeast d.c. last week. wint accused in the murders of savvas savopoulos his wife their 10-year-old boy and the housekeeper. investigators say wint had accomplices. so far, no one else is charged. meantime a source close to the family says an important witness in the case has not been seen for days. megan fitzgerald will have more on that coming up in the next half hour. an apology tonight from the man causing a security scare on the national mall. a rice cooker in his vehicle prompted the lockdown on the eve of memorial day festivities and tonight he says he simply didn't think it through. chris gordon is on the national mall with that story. hi chris. >> reporter: good evening. well the suspicious vehicle was parked right here on 3rd street

right across from the u.s. capitol. police on patrol detected the smell of gasoline coming from it and immediately called the bomb squad. police smashed the rear window of the suspicious window. destroying them both with explosives the rice cooker and propane tank. police closed streets, some people delayed getting the west lawn of the capitol for the evening memorial holiday capital. the man who owns the car i spoke with him by phone. >> i apologize for the inconvenience all those people to enjoy the festivities that you know i delayed it because of something stupid that i should have thought a little bit more about it. that's it. >> reporter: he says he runs a food truck and needed space and removed the rice cooker and propane tank and put them in his vehicle parking it near the capitol. you can still see the debris

from the rice cooker and propane tank as well as the site of the explosion. israel shimles who brought this to capitol hill tells me he understands why police did what they did. >> right in front of the capitol, of course i would have done the same thing. you know i would have freaked out and i would have done the same thing. but they -- i understand. that's all. >> reporter: people on the national mall are not used to seeing crime tape here. or a crater from an explosives. memorial day is supposed to be a time of quiet remembrance. >> i think that it's very bad for our society to have to worry ant things like that. you know? on memorial day and people celebrating people who fought for us for many many years and died and we have to worry about this kind of stuff. to me it is disgusting. >> reporter: shimles given a citation for driving on a revoked license. now, he tells me that he is a

law-abiding, upstanding citizen and just want it is incident to be over. jim, back to you. >> thank you. several people jumped into action today to save a child from drowning in a community pool in rockville, maryland. the boy is 7 years old enjoying the holiday today swimming a bunch of other kids and suddenly went under. seconds later, a man jumped in to the pool and pulled him out. the boy was unconscious and a nurse came and began performing cpr. the boy's loved ones are grateful. >> they saved his life. he was lifeless when he came out the pool. they resuscitated him, performed cpr to the best of their abilities. >> the nurse who helped save the boy said she smoke to him and he is doing fine. on this memorial day, president obama is reminding us to take a moment to stop and remember u.s. service me believes who have died for our country. >> most americans don't fully see, don't fully understand the sacrifice made by the 1% who

serve in this all-volunteer armed forces. sacrifice that preserves the freedoms we too often take for granted. >> the president took part in the memorial day ceremony at arlington national cemetery. he laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns to honor the sacrifices of armed service members. american soldiers in afghanistan took time to remember the fallen. more than 2,300 u.s. soldiers lost their lives in afghanistan over the past 14 years. most soldiers have left the country and those remaining are no longer in a combat role in afghanistan. security was tight along the parade route in downtown d.c. today. hundreds of people lined constitution avenue to honor those who served and sacrificed. zach? >> reporter: mr. vance, it was an absolutely beautiful day out here today. you couldn't ask for better

>> thanks. and update to a story we brought you on news 4 at 5:00 now. someone called in a series of threats against commercial airplanes today. maryland state police received one of the calls but no flights at local airports were targeted. an airfrance flight was escorted in to jfk in new york after the threats were made. the caller claimed chemical weapons were on board ten flights. the airfrance flight landed safely. so far nobody arrested. up next a father is sharing his story after his son was found dead in a park. why he says the system failed to protect his little boy. also, a local school district warning parents after alarming posts on social media. i'm adam tuss live in hyattsville. a focus on motorcycle safety after a deadly motorcycle accident here.

little boy died in seconds after a motorcycle careened into a crowd of people. that happened on saturday near the mall at prince georges in my yachtsville. it's putting the spotlight on motorcycle safety awareness. transportation reporter adam tuss is at the scene of the crash now with more on this. adam? >> reporter: that's right. plenty of concern out here. look at the memorial. it is growing tonight. the's a bus stop right here where people wait and as you mentioned plenty of concern. right here today in the same spot where a motorcycle crash took a little boy's life high speed risky moves on a motorcycle. >> it's people definitely being really dangerous and reckless out here. >> reporter: trying to show off, do tricks? >> show off. why? i have no idea.

>> reporter: while the investigation into this motorcycle crash is still ongoing, police have said it appears speed may have played a large role. that's a big concern as the weather turns warmer and more motorcyclists gear up for a ride on our roads. >> every year as soon as the season turns to something warm the bikes are out. and things happen. >> reporter: motorcycle deaths are predicted to go down for the second straight gear according to the governor's highway safety association but compared to a decade ago, deaths are up keeping speed many check, a big focus. the ghsa says states should be adopting stronger helmet laws. tracy gregg was eating dinner nearby when it happened on saturday. she says it stuck with her. >> tragic. seeing the shoes and the debris and everything it was too much. my mom actually came over here and said a prayer. >> reporter: become here now live. now, may is actually motorcycle

86 locations and 84 inside the beltway here. pax river at 77. temperatures in the 70s. look at that ocean city from 70 to 71 degrees. currently. sunshine across the area. what's helping us today is south wind at 12 miles per hour and we have had the gusts, higher gusts over 20 miles per hour. and then that wind settles this evening and high pressure, i think a mostly clear sky. nice conditions by 9:00. we drop to the mid-70s and then around 70 degrees by 11:00 p.m. and tomorrow morning, starting out in the 60s. but tomorrow morning's a little sticky and pleasant today. we pull the meter all the way up to sticky. we bypass that to uncomfortable conditions for tomorrow afternoon with more humidity and higher temperatures. here's what's going on across the area. satellite and radar view nothing here to show. certainly no thunderstorms. not even any clouds or closest clouds way out in west virginia. big area of high pressure off the coast and that holds firm

several law enforcement officers raiding a girlfriend's home in brooklyn last week working quickly to capture him. hours later on thursday night, wint was arrested in northwest d.c. these unsealed court documents revealing details of the homicide. >> you never know when's living around you really. >> reporter: investigators say wint beat theadults. a neighbor on westview lane didn't feel safe going on cam are and disgusted by the details. >> no amount on somebody's life but $10,000 a pop, he should be under the jail if he did it under the jail. >> reporter: the affidavit says savvas savopoulos' assistant interviewed by police after told to bring $40,000 to the house thursday morning. police say he lied about when and how it was delivered. sources close to the family say neither friends or family close

to the tragedy have seen that assistant since the day before the house was set on fire. now, it's important to note that that assistant is not a person of interest or a suspect in this case. that is ongoing investigation but at this point police do believe and they do feel confident there are more people involved this case. news 4. back to you. >> thank you. a volunteer paramedic remains in jail tonight accused of inappropriate contact with an underaged girl. timothy ward was arrested friday and charged with indecent liberties with a child. investigators say he also used a device to solicit the girl, ward is a lieutenant at the rescue squad and a voluntary paramedic with the sterling rescue squad. the issue of taxes usually brings out passionate responses in people and in prince georges county that passion is playing out on the school board. one board member who was opposed to a tax hike for schools was

across northern virginia memorial day on serb vances ranged from the solemn to festive. as julie carey reports now, even an upbeat parade can help preserve this patriotic tradition. >> reporter: as he marches in this falls church remembrance ceremony mike strictler is thinking of her brother david. three served in the vietnam war. but 21-year-old david didn't come home. >> i started thinking about the things we used to do together and just one big happy family but before he left. >> reporter: he is among a group of veterans and community leaders who make sure every memorial day the fallen are not forgotten. their names are read. >> willis chin. >> reporter: "taps" played. ♪ so what about the more raw cause

another way of remembering those killed while serving. and it's important to note here too, they had a special tribute to the fallen earlier this afternoon on the main stage here. back to you. >> julie, thank you. a safety warning tonight regarding some young students. loudon county public schools sent a recent alert to elementary school student parents. they seen texts and pictures documenting self injuries like cutting. they said the messages are through social media. they want the parents to check the social media accounts and contact the school if a child is hurting him or herself. coming up hear from a family saying the legal system is broken. he's talking about red flags in the days before his son's death on a playground. plus a story of war and reconciliation. chris gordon travels to vietnam to show us how two

come to grips with a death of his young son. the little boy was found at a playground and tonight his father tells news 4 the legal system didn't do enough to protect. >> slap on the wrist. we get ground into dog meat. >> that father fought for sole custody of his child an say it is court did not grant it to him and as derrick ward tells us now, the father wonders if his son would have been better off in his care. >> reporter: the father james remembers the good times with his son. he was only 3 but the personality was already there. >> he loved having fun. you know? he just like me. he loved watching movies. you know? he can quote any movie. >> reporter: he was found dead in this playground and neighbors reported a mother pushing him in the swing for hours. >> came out of nowhere for me. >> reporter: lee tried to get sole custody of the boy and didn't want to keep the mother out of the child's life forever

but he did want her to get help and convey it to a judge. >> he deemed her at that moment a fit parent. you know? and i'm not saying she isn't. you know? but in this situation, he just didn't pay attention to the signs. >> reporter: he says shortly after that the mother took him to southern maryland to waldorf. sims' mother lives there. >> i have a stable home for him to be at. you know? i have a stable roof for him to be under. for him to have a life he's supposed to have. >> reporter: on the wednesday before he was found dead james got a call from at her mother's. >> to let me know that they had some issues and that i needed to come get them right away. >> reporter: but lee says by the time he was done with work she had stopped answering the calls and next call came on friday from the mother. she told him his son was dead. he isn't comfortable talking about him in the past tense.

that is vibrant city. people are doing business on every corner sidewalk and market and a clean city. we found a dozen employees cleaning the fnt of this five-star hotel. the people are friendly here. it was the site of a major u.s. air base. marble mountain inside the mountain there's a cave where the vietcong built a secret hospital. claiming to shot down 18 u.s. helicopters from this personal. beneath marble mountain is marble beach, that's what they call it. we know it as china beach made famous in tv shows. they sent troops here for rest and rerheecreation and they have removed references to the china since the war. it is a battle for hearts and minds. this is the story of enemies who became friends long after the war. it begins with brigadier general

dan cherry. april 16 1972 he fired a missile from his f-4 hitting ajet. pilot hong mi ejected. 36 years later, a vietnamese tv host arranged for them to meet. he revealed that he had shot down an american airman. he asked cherry to find him. research and luck led to lieutenant colonel john styles wary and embraced his former enemy. >> there was no hatred on his party or animosity or gloating. he was just a genuine person. >> reporter: from the first meeting, a deep friendship has grown. >> i was in hanoi last year and spent ten days with him. had a great time. got to know him, his family very well. and he treated me like a kin. >> reporter: styles say he was told they were never enemies.
