a major announcement in the race for president. we're going to check out his latest online video. good morning, everyone. it is saturday may 30th. i'm angie goff. >> and i'm david culver. welcome to news4 today. let's start off with a check of the forecast. chuck bell standing by in the storm team 4 weather center. you're thinking hot and humid? >> indeed. plenty of clouds around this morning, but that won't do much to slow down the warm-up for later in the afternoon. most areas today will be up close to 90 once again. the clouds have led to a couple of showers early this morning out in the shenandoah valley. here's a check on storm team 4 radar. there's interstate 81 right there. these showers in page county southern parts of greene county up here and warren county. also a little bit of very light rain this morning. those are headed up into louden. not a lot of rain out there this morning. around town there could be a sprinkle or two under the clouds. but temperatures are warm already. 75 in washington.

already 70 in manassas. upper 80s for highs today. highest rain chance today will be west of the immediate metro area to the shenandoah valley. about a 40% chance of rain at 2:00 this afternoon. then drying out again towards this evening. everyone's rain chances are higher for tomorrow. that part of the forecast is just ahead. >> all right, chuck. thanks. new this morning, police in prince george's county trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash. happened around 1:00 this morning on indian head highway and route 210. police say the man was driving southbound when he was hit by a car that was heading northbound. the woman in the other vehicle expected to be okay. we can tell you the northbound lanes of indian head highway are closed. we're working to find out when that road's going to reopen. >> in decision 2016 today, martin o'malley is expected to announce he is running for president. the o'malley campaign releasing this video overnight showing the

former governor tuning up. ♪ ♪ >> well that is "hail to the chief chief" o'malley playing on his guitar. coming up derrick ward will have a report from baltimore on the security preparations before the announcement. well when o'malley enters that race he is going to face off against two others for the democratic nomination. hillary clinton jumped into the 2016 race first. this is her second bid for the white house. and this week vermont senator bernie sanders announced his bid for the white house. sanders is an independent, but running as a democrat for the presidency. and the republican field has quite a few more contenders. just take a look to the right of me here. eight people are definitely running in the 2016 race with a few more expected to enter.

in that race mike huckabee carly fiorina, ben carson. marco rubio, rand paul and rick santorum also on that list. david? this morning we're learning more about why former speaker of the house dennis hastert was indicted. federal law enforcements say he paid hush money to someone from his past. the payments stem from his days as an illinois school teacher. nbc's pete williams reports on the claims of possible sexual misconduct with a student. >> reporter: no sign of dennis hastert at his home in plano about an hour's drive west of chicago. in nearby yorkville where hastert was a teacher and coach, strong support and disbelief. >> i would prefer to have never known that anything like this went on. >> reporter: a federal indictment says hastert agreed to pay someone from yorkville

$3.5 million to conceal what's described as past misconduct. the charges don't say what the misconduct was or who the person is referred to in court documents as individual "a," but the indictments strongly suggest it happened while he was a teacher and coach at yorkville high school. the yorkville school district in a written statement says it has no knowledge of his alleged misconduct nor it says has any individual contacted the district to report such misconduct. hastert was also a wrestling and football coach in jorkville and today former coaches he worked with and students he coached were coming to his defense. gary math lock was his first state champion. >> he was super professional. as a teacher, as a coach, as a

human being. i would refer to him as my second father. >> reporter: anthony houle was hastert's assistant coach. >> there wasn't anything that happened in the six years that i worked with denny that would ever make me believe that there was anything improper. >> reporter: prosecutors say hastert had withdrawn $1.7 million from four accounts to make the payments but cut back on the size of withdrawals to evade federal transaction rules. former colleagues expressed surprise at the charges both republicans and democrats. >> it's surprising i think, that would be a universal response. and of course remains to be seen what comes forth now, but it's very sad for him and sad really for the congress. >> nbc's pete williams reporting there. hastert's lawyers have not commented on those charges. the sexual conduct claims cannot be prosecuted because the statute of limitations has long

since run out. we now know the name of the man arrested for trying to rob an elderly couple in the district. it was marks the victim left on the suspect that led police to him. 50-year-old milton hood of northwest d.c. was arrested yesterday afternoon. police say around 11:00 in the morning he tried to rob a couple right in front of the turkish embassy. that's on 23rd and q street northwest. the suspect approached the couple demanded money, and started fighting with the 81-year-old man. and the wife then started beating hood the suspect, with her cane. those marks helped police identify hood when they arrested him a few hours later. tough weekend for a family in prince george's county. they're making final preparations for the funeral of a 7-year-old boy. alejandro santos was killed last saturday. a motorcycle was making a left turn into prince george's mall 37 that's when it crashed and threw the bike to the ground. but the bike kept going. crashed into the 7-year-old and

his family. his brother and father in critical condition this morning. his sister recovering with a broken leg. >> i just feel like my heart is breaking for everybody. they're all the nicest people. >> a go fund me page has now been set up to help with funeral and medical costs for the santos family. you can now have your say about police accountability following the death of freddie gray in baltimore city. gray's death while in police custody sparked riots and looting in the city. a meeting will be held today between baltimore city council members and neighbors from the winchester area. it's going to happen around 1:00 p.m. at the baptist church in baltimore. get moving. today d.c. mayor bowser is challenging you to walk a billion steps. yes billion with a "b." city officials want to motivate you and the family, get you moving living that healthier lifestyle. the announcement is expected to happen at 10:00 this morning at the deanwood recreation center

back at 8:10. we want to help you out if you're planning to use metro this weekend. heads up, there are some delays. track work on most the lines. the trains on the orange silver and blue lines running every 26 minutes. trains on the red line running every 20 minutes. but there will be some additional trains during the day within the district so as to help move it along. the greenbelt station is closed this morning. shuttle buses will replace those trains. texas will get federal aid to help with the cleanup after the severe flooding in the

region. president obama signing a disaster declaration for the state yesterday. many areas have been hit by heavy rain since early may. if you look at some of these images this is in dallas water logged causing a rush hour nightmare. 7 inches of rain fell in dallas this week and more than 200 people were rescued from the cars that were under several feet of water. a state of disaster has been declared in more than 70 counties in that state. all right. today you can go to a festival just for bacon. this is no joke. the america loves bacon festival. an appropriate name there happening in the district. it's at the half street fairgrounds in southeast. the vip taste begins at 11:30 this morning. general admission at 1:00. there will be bacon, live music, eating competitions. and they've even got a kids area set up there. >> if you see a guy driving around northern virginia with bacon on his license plate, i'm

it's been 40 years since the fall of saigon. chris gordon visited vietnam. there he discovered an amazing story about one-time enemies who now are close friends. >> reporter: this giant pagoda overlooks the city of de nang. buddhism is one of many religions in vietnam along with christianity and ancestor worship. de nang is a vibrant city. people are doing business on every sidewalk corner and market. and it's a clean city. we found a dozen employees cleaning the front of this five-star hotel. the people here are friendly. >> they are happy. welcome all the people come. >> reporter: de nang was the site of a base. inside the mountain there's a

cave where the vietcong built a secret hospital. they claimed to have shot down 18 u.s. helicopters from this perch. beneath marble mountain is marble beach. that's what the vietnamese call it. we know it as china beach made famous in movies and tv shows nep u.s. military sent troops here for rest and recreation during the war. but the vietnamese have removed many references to china since the war. the war here has always been a battle for hearts and minds. this is the story of enemies who became friends long after the war. it begins with brigadier general dan cherry. on april 16 1972 he fired a missile from his f-4 hitting a vietnamese pilot hahn mi. he ejected barely escaping with his life. a tv host arranged for the pilots to meet. hahn mi revealed at that time he had shot down an american airman.

he asked cherry to find him. research and luck led to lieutenant colonel john stiles who was at first wary but quickly embraced his former enemy. >> when i met hahn mi there was no hatred on his part or animosity or gloating. he was just a genuine person. >> reporter: from that first meeting, a deep friendship has grown. >> i was in hanoi last year and spent ten days with him. had a great time. got to know him, got to know his family very well. and he treated me like a king. >> reporter: stiles says hahn mi told him they were never enemies, they were just soldiers. >> he was doing his job. i was doing my job. it just happens that way. >> reporter: we end this report at the vietnam veterans memorial here in washington, d.c. the wall with more than 58,000 names of those who lost their lives. it is part of the healing process for families friends, and veterans.

a place to say thank you for your service and sacrifice. maryland recently enacted a law to welcome home vietnam veterans. it comes more than 40 years after the war ended, but some say it's a good start. reporting from the vietnam veterans memorial chris gordon news4. >> i know we've got a lot of veterans in town. some taking part in honor flights. going to be hot and humid for them. >> thinking we should go in may before it gets really hot. oops. then we have one of our warmest mays on record. already the way it's shaping up this may is going to be the second warmest may on record here in washington. records date back to the 1870s. number one on the list 1991. so it's been at least that long since we've had a may anywhere near this warm. we'll be within a couple tenths of degrees of tying for the monthly record temperature. it is a partly to mostly cloudy sky here in town. there's enough sunlight getting

through to cause a bit of a warm-up. we're already at 75 in washington. dew point which is the real measure of moisture in the air. the closer that number gets to 70 degrees, the stickier and steamier it feels. it feels like mid-summer humidity outside early this morning. what to expect mugginess now. near 90 later. there will be a chance for a shower or thunderstorm out in the shenandoah valley. but i think most of the metro area should remain dry for the day. not 100% guarantee, but in all likelihood rain will focus out to the north and west today. temperatures low to mid-70s now. it's going to be a quick one. humidity out there, will allow temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees for a time during the afternoon hours. if you're putting the back yard grill out later today, here's an opportunity for a shower or thunderstorm. again, mainly west of town. louden and frederick counties probably have the best chance in and around the metro area. but most outdoor grilling forecast will be on the dry side tonight. temperatures in the 80s as we approach the sundown hours. satellite picture, a little

bubble of high pressure sitting over us. has driven showers up the valley. that's where i think rain chances will remain highest during the day today. if you're traveling today, chicago, st. louis, memphis, dallas-ft. worth. all could have significant flight delays today. more heavy rain moving into the dallas-ft. worth area. here's our seven-day forecast. 90 today with a best chance west of the metro. for late tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening. monday likely to be the rainiest of the next seven days. we dry out on tuesday morning. so tuesday afternoon through the second half of next week. temper

our area is certainly known for all the land marks and monuments, but more and more we're building a reputation as a great food city. every year the restaurant association of metropolitan washington hosts the rami awards to host some of the best food spots in the d.c. area. and this year there's a new twist to those awards. we're talking food photos. and joining us to talk about that is kathy hollinger, the executive director of ramw. thanks for joining us. these local photographers, great photographers, took about six weeks going into some of the best restaurants our city has to offer. why? >> we wanted to make sure that

this year at the gala we visually captured everything that this industry represents from the faces and the places and really show that it does take a village to create an experience for the diner in the region. >> one of the photographers that went out and about was ray lopez. we have a couple images from him if we want to show those. these are from bourbon steak as well as del campo. what stands out when you look at these photos? >> well you see the mastering of everything from an experience for a diner coming in so preparation to ingredients. and that was really important for us. we have an industry that has grown so much. and i think it's easy to talk about growth but the goal that evening is for people to come in and look around the room and see the room come alive with these beautiful photos. 2,000 photos which will be displayed that evening.

yes. >> and so often when we think of restaurants and we think of awards and honoring them for what they do best and that's making food and presenting it we focus on the finished product. and so rarely do we talk about the challenges and the struggle. as a former waitress -- i waitressed even while i was doing news -- i know it's a tough business. another photographer here steph harding, she was really able to capture the behind the scenes stories. >> absolutely. so i think that's so important is that these images and 2,000 of them will show the entire experience walking into the restaurant from how you're greeted to how food is prepared to how a diner is experiencing the ambience the decor, the architecture in the restaurant. all of which you will be able to see that evening. and there will be one winner of one winning image who will be announced that evening. >> do they get anything cool? >> they get to be announced at the rammys 2015. >> which is a great party, by

the way. >> absolutely. >> and we do want to run more photos. we actually have a carousel of them. as we talk about the rammys and the upcoming show what else is new we can kp ptexpect? >> this is year two in the convention center. we're able to provide the red carpet feel for our food industry professionals who come out that night. the biggest new element this year is the photos. and the photo project with photo d.c. the association thought we should do something creative to highlight decor way and we thought nothing would be more poignant than photos. >> definitely sheds another perspective and also i guess in a recipe kind of way, adds another layer to the event. thank you, kathy, for joining us. >> thank you. >> we want to remind you that the 33rd annual rammy awards are on sunday june 7th at the washington convention center. coming up on 8:27 on this saturday. still ahead, screech convicted.

you up to speed on your top stories. martin o'malley standing by to announce he is running for president. he's planning to make that announcement at baltimore's federal hill park at 10:00 this morning. new information on former speaker of the house dennis hastert's indictment. a law enforcement source telling nbc news that hastert was making the payments to a man in order to conceal a sexual relationship they had while the man was a student at a high school in illinois. hastert was a teacher and wrestling coach at the school at the time. >> heads up on metro. track work on most of the lines this weekend. the green line has got the greenbelt station closed. then if we look at the orange silver and blue lines, trains running every 26 minutes. going to the red line, every 20 minutes. good saturday morning. welcome back to news4 today. i'm david culver. >> and i'm angie goff. we are entering the last weekend of may. it looks like it's another

summerlike weekend. >> been a hot may. chuck bell standing by with a look at that forecast. the heat continues today? >> yeah. we'll be up near 90 again today. our average high now is just barely 80 degrees. so we're running about 10 degrees or so warmer than average by later on this afternoon. we do have a fair amount of clouds to contend with early this morning. not much showing up on tomorrow team 4 radar. but there are a few showers out towards the shenandoah valley. keeping a track on these from front royal. these showers are inching their way northbound. maybe just a quick little sprinkle first thing this morning. right now in town dry. that's about it for now. temperatures on their way up. low to mid-70s now will turn into a very hot day today. temperature is 86 by 1:00. near 90 by 4:00. that's the perfect time to see them around the mountains between 3:00 and 6:00 today.

showers to the west of the city. high near 90. rain chances go up for everybody tomorrow. as a result just a touch cooler. seven-day forecast with our rainiest day of the next seven coming up. >> thanks. in decision 2016 right now martin o'malley getting ready to make the biggest announcement of his career. in baltimore he's expected to announce he's running for president in the next election. derrick ward live in baltimore this morning with more on the preparations and what's happening ahead of that announcement. >> reporter: yeah well you know there are bands and a burgeoning crowd. nothing says political season like that. in an hour and a half it will be official that former maryland governor former baltimore governor will be seeking presidential seat in 2016. there are three big indicators that o'malley was going to do this. first off he passed on running for the seat being vacated by

barbara ma cull ski. second he's had people in new iowa. and he's been popping up in some of the early voting states as well. a little bit about his history. of course he served two terms as governor of maryland first in 2006 and then in 2010. both times winning by more than 50%. and also two terms as mayor of baltimore 1999 and 2004. he was seen as a long shot and won overwhelmingly in both of those races. and throughout his political career he has carried the moniker with him. as mayor of baltimore, crime went down by about 43%. but on the other side of that critics say he may have messed with the figures. a heavily data approach to crime fighting. some folks say we are seeing the

carly fiorina, and ben carson. senators marco rubio, rand paul and former senator rick santorum also on that list. and then there's senator ted cruz and former new york governor george pataki also running. all right. developing right now, a quiet start as we look live at the capitol. but tomorrow lawmakers on the hill will decide if the nsa's phone data collection will continue. the deadline is looming for a section of the patriot act to be renewed. president obama says it could make the u.s. vulnerable to a preventable attack if they don't take some action. the house passed a bipartisan compromise that would still allow phone companies to store all of that data. the government would then need a search warrant to get access to it. >> a jury convicted a former "saved by the bell" star dustin diamond of two misdemeanors after he stabbed a man on christmas in wisconsin. the jury cleared him on the most

serious felony charge, but he was found gmt of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. diamond played screech on the popular 1990s show. she found her husband dead in their tacoma park back yard last august. now police say she's the one who killed him along with another man. larlane brown and howe sane ali zadeh are facing charges in the death of cecil brown. back in august police say larlane found her husband's body. she told news4 at the time she didn't know who would kill her husband and that no one saw what happened to him. well you may be able to help police in the district if you recognize this man. if you can just take a moment and take a look at this video from the td bank on 7th street northwest. the bank was robbed a few weeks ago on sunday. the man in that red cap went in around 11:30 in the morning. he searches his pockets and then walks away from the teller, returns with a large shopping

bag and demands the money. if you know who this is police want to hear from you. an impact of all the live anthrax shipments. now reviewing the procedure used to deactivate anthrax. 24 laboratories in 11 states along with labs in south korea and australia received the live samples. so far no one's gotten sick. four people in the u.s. two dozen people in south korea are taking antibiotics just to be safe. today families and friends will gather in montgomery county to remember our fallen soldiers. a memorial service will be held today at 11:00 a.m. at christmas park in gaithersburg. it will honor all who have given their lives in military service. it will include a wreath laying ceremony. the world war ii memorial will be visited in the district. they'll join other vets as part of the honor flight.

the program takes veterans from across the country to visit their memorials. the non-profit organization aims to bring honor and closure to our nation's heroes. and children who have lost loved ones in the military will head to a special event today at rfk stadium. d.c. united is hosting the event in collaboration with the tragedy assistance program for survivors. in honor of military appreciation month, the kids will get a chance to brush up on their skills at the clinic and also get a meet some of the d.c. united players which is really nice. >> they'll enjoy that. the one man who took a ride he will never forget. we see him check off an item off his bucket list as he battles a deadly disease. then the feud that could change the surroundings near former president gerald

it's the place he learned of nixon's resignation and where he spent his first ten days as president. now there are concerns about changes to e the property next to gerald ford's home could overshadow it. the people next door want to subdivide. they're possible of a mcmansion popping up. president ford's home is listed in the national register of historic places. a man diagnosed with cancer got the ride of a lifetime at an air show in west virginia. tony robinson was just diagnosed with prostate cancer and was given six months to live. yesterday robinson flew in a plane known as the f-1 rocket at the martinsburg, west virginia hair show. it was robinson's first time

composition that are very different up close and can be supported up close in this experience but when stepped back they become another complete image from a greater distance. >> reporter: these two works of art are part of a commission called eded symphony d.c. major. it will be at the o. the piece will highlight three from the neighborhood. colonel robert gould shaw. alma thomas. and jazz legend duke ellington. >> for me it's a way to tell a bit of a story and some richness for those who shape not only shaw and d.c. but shape quite

though there is a chance for shower or thunderstorm everywhere i think most of the metro stays dry through the afternoon hours today. 73 hagerstown 73 in annapolis and baltimore. 74 in spotsylvania and the northern neck. here's our high resolution computer model and the way it paints the way the weather is going. not much through about noon. but after about 12:30, 1:00 along the spine of the blue ridge here, out along i-81, that's where the best rain chances will be. could get into northern montgomery and frederick counties and maryland. not expecting any severe weather, but any of these individual thunderstorms when you hear thunder roar that's your signal to go inside. notice the core of the metro area is still missing out on the rain chance. but out to the south and west towards luray, that's where the rain chances remain highest. but 7:00 tonight maybe a few showers inching towards leesburg but with time those
