to lounge into as you go through the course of your afternoon. maybe the neighborhood pool which is certainly open now that we're past memorial day. pool water temperatures should have come up quite a bit since memorial day weekend courtesy of all the warm weather we've been having. not much of a rain threat around washington today, but there are a couple of lonesome sprinkles out here on the blue ridge. these are drifting. nothing heavy, just a sprinkle or two before lunchtime. not much around town. maybe few lonesome rain drops. temperatures are on the mild side. low to mid-70s. already 77 in washington. later on this afternoon, temperatures up near 90 degrees once again. highest rain chances will be right along i-81 today. everyone's rain chances go up starting late tomorrow afternoon into monday. show you the seven-day coming up. >> all right. new this morning, police in prince george's county trying to

figure out what caused a deadly crash in accokeek. it happened on indian head highway. the man was driving southbound when he was hit by a car headed northbound. the woman in the other vehicle expected to be okay. but the northbound lanes of indian head highway are closed at this hour. we're working to find out when they'll reopen. >> in addition 2016 we're less than an hour away from governor martin o'malley announcing he is running for president in 2016. but not everyone is celebrating this upcoming announcement. news4's derrick ward has more on the protests that are planned at this morning's announcement. >> reporter: crowds are starting to gather here at federal hill. this is an iconic spot here in baltimore. and of course an appropriate place for martin o'malley to kick off his 2016 presidential bid. take a look at the crowd. this is getting underway. and a lot of people saw this coming. we heard about martin o'malley. heard his name mentioned several

times. this time he's making it official. he's done two terms as governor of maryland. 2006 and 2010. and two terms as mayor of baltimore. and, you know people saw this coming because he's been showing up in new hampshire and iowa and he's even staffing up in those places. now, here -- the crowds are here that are starting to gather. you've got people who are both decided and undecided. >> really excited about. he's charismatic, has good ideas. >> that's what i'm here to find out. i know certain things are important to me. medicare is important to me. i'm getting older now. education. and forgiveness of student debt. >> reporter: now, one of the hallmarks of his time here was an institution of a zero tolerance policy for policing. that's raised some concerns about his candidacy and actually we expect to see some protesters here on that note.

paul and rick santorum on this list. and the first to announce senator ted cruz. then former new york governor george pataki also in the running. david? >> all right. thanks. former house speaker dennis hastert out of sight this morning as he faces charges for allegedly violating banking laws. federal law enforcement officials say he paid hush money to high misconduct with a male student years ago. now a report on how the colleagues of hastert are responding. >> reporter: hastert, the former speaker of the house only agreed he paid $3.5 million to conceal past misconduct. it strongly suggests it happened between 1965 and 1981 while he was a teacher in yorkville. it does not mention the nature of the misconduct.

friday law enforcement said it was to a man and the conduct was a sexual nature while the man was a student. and the yorkville school said they had no knowledge of the alleged misconduct. he received support today from his first state wrestling champion. >> the gentleman was a super professional as a teacher, as a coach, as a human being. i would refer to him as my second father. >> reporter: in washington former colleagues on both sides of the aisle are stunned. >> it's surprising. i think that would be a universal response and of course remains to be seen what comes forth now, but it's very sad for him and sad, really for the congress. >> there's been no comment from hastert or hastert's lawyers since the charges were revealed. nbc news. >> and the next phase will be the legal one when as early as next week hastert could enter a plea on the charges against him.

well a drone forced a plane leaving reagan national to quickly change its course. 2708 from reagan to laguardia was in midair when it was told a drone was headed toward the plane. the plane eventually landed safely and we hear this morning that the faa is investigating. prince william county police launched a series of drug busts this week and news4 got exclusive access. the targets of these raids were dealers who allegedly sold drugs to high school kids or young adults. police say they were stopping more than just pot dealers. much of what police seized will be photographed and posted on social media next week so parents can get a good look. a very difficult weekend for a family in prince george's county as they're making final preparations for the funeral of a 7-year-old boy. alejandro santos was killed last saturday when a motorcycle came crashing into him and his

family. that motorcycle was making a left turn into prince george's mall. it crashed throwing the rider onto the ground but the motorcycle kept going. alejandro's brother and father remain in critical condition. his sister is out of the hospital recovering with a broken leg. the community has set up a go fund me page to help with expenses. you can now have your say about police accountability after the death of freddie gray in baltimore city. gray's death while in police custody sparked riots and looting in that city. a meeting will be held today between baltimore city council members and neighbors from winchester area. a lot of feet moving in the district today. today district mayor bowser challenging you to walk a billion steps. yeah billion. it's part of the fit d.c. billion steps challenge. city officials want to motivate you and the family. get you moving living that

minutes. now, the green line the greenbelt station is closed. shuttle buses are going to replace trains there. federal officials have trying to figure out who targeted several commercial planes with a laser distracting and blinding pilots. the feds are urging people now to stop before something terrible happens. tom costello has the latest. >> reporter: it happened at 9:30 p.m. thursday. a commuter flight crew flying out of new york's jfk airport. >> there's somebody out to the left side of the airplane here. they're shining green lasers it's flashes us a couple times. >> reporter: a few hours later it was an american airlines flight to l.a. >> we were struck three or four times. >> reporter: then delta flights to buffalo and boston. >> delta 2292 left side or right side of the aircraft? we have a police car underneath you right now. >> i'm not looking down at it but it's lighting up the inside of the windshield from the left

"jaws" hit the big screen 40 years ago. >> and we're now learning those great white sharks are frequent visitors to our shorelines. just how close are they getting? nbc's kerry sanders has the latest. >> reporter: off the coast of cape cod, scientists began tagging great white sharks three years ago. naming them too included mary lee. >> this shark is named katherine. >> reporter: and katherine. >> what's going on there, it's counterintuitive. >> reporter: now it's the real science emerging that has experts excited.

>> katherine right now the right there in the orange dot. >> reporter: since katherine began transmitteding she's traveled more than 13,000 miles. mary lee an astonishing 20,000-plus miles. the routes they swim look like a plate of spaghetti. more often than anyone realized they're very close to the east coast shoreline. sometimes within 20 yards. yet scientists say they still cannot predict where a great white is going next. they do however, have a theory as to why sharks females in particular are like tourists coming to these warm waters off the coast of florida. the 80-degree temperatures are good for their pregnancies. today off the coast of jupiter, florida, we encountered 20 bull sharks but no great whites. they're out there. as spear fisherman grayson shepherd figured out this month. >> we have our monsters.

last night in police custody. investigate esors say he stabbed the couple to death earlier this month. let's bring you up to speed on some of our other top stories this morning. we start in prince george's county. police there trying to figure out what caused a crash in accokeek. the northbound lanes of indian head highway closed right now. a drone forced a plane leaving reagan national to quickly change course. shuttle america flight 2708 from reagan to la guardia was in mid air when it alerted air traffic control. a quad copter drone was heading towards the plane. they had to climb 200 feet to avoid the drone. and plan accordingly. there's work on most metro lines. the greenbelt station is closed. shuttle buses will replace trains. then on the orange silver and blue lines trains running every 26 minutes.

renewed. president obama says it could make the u.s. vulnerable to a preventable attack if they don't take action. the house passed a bipartisan compromise that would still allow phone companies to store all of that data. the government would then need a search warrant to get access to it. a jury convicted former "saved by the bell" star dustin diamond of two misdemeanors after he stabbed a man on christmas. he stabbed that man on christmas day in wisconsin. the jury cleared him on the most serious felony charge but he was found guilty of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. diamond played screech on the popular 1990s show. she found her husband dead in their tacoma park backyard last august. now police say she's the one who killed him along with help from another man. larlane brown and hussain ali zadeh are facing first degree murder charges in the death of cecil brown. the browns had been married for 51 years. back in august police said larlane found her husband's body. she told us at that time that

she didn't know who would kill her husband and that no one saw what happened to him. you may be able to help police in the district if you can recognize this man. take a look at this video here. it's from the td bank on 7th street northwest. the bank was robbed a few weeks ago on a sunday. the man in the red baseball cap there went into the bank around 11:30 in the morning. he searches his pockets. he walked away there from the teller. he returns with a large shopping bag and demands money. if you know who he is police want to hear from you. the impact of all those mistaken shipments of live anthrax is growing this morning. the defense department now ordering a review of the procedures used to deactivate anthrax. labs in 11 states and overseas received the live samples. so far no one's gotten sick but four people in the u.s. and two dozen in south korea are taking antibiotics just to be safe. well today families and friends will gather in montgomery county to remember

our fallen soldiers. a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at christmas park in gaithersburg. it will honor all who have given their lives in military service. there will also be a wreath laying ceremony. today more than 70 world war ii veterans are going to visit the world war ii memorial in the district. they're going to join nearly 2,000 other vets of wars as part of the honor flight program. the honor program takes veterans from across the country to visit their memorials. the non-profit organization aims to bring honor and closure to our nation's heroes. and at this time we want to go back to baltimore where there's a big announcement being made and our reporter derrick ward joins us now live. ♪ >> reporter: well, as you can see the music has started here and the crowd has started to fill in here at federal hill.

now something that a lot of people already knew or had a good sense was going to happen. we have some video from some campaign promotional video put out by the martin o'malley campaign. in a little less than 30 minutes he will be making it official he is running for president in 2016 for the democratic nomination at least. served as the governor of maryland for two terms. 2006 and 2010. he also served two terms as mayor of baltimore. a progressive through and through in both of those political incarnations. of course here in baltimore he was instrumental in lowering the crime rates, some people say. some also say he was instrumental in instituting a zero tolerance policy for police officers. among the people here there's a diverse crowd and different opinions from the people gathered here in this crowd. let's listen. >> i'm going to make less money than what my parents did. so those types of things i want

we have breaking news right now out of laurel maryland. residents are being told to stay inside with their air conditioning off because of a sulfuric acid leak. residents are being told to shelter in place right now. >> the fire department says a trailer was making a delivery when the driver noticed a leak. now, we know that leak has been confined just to that location. the shelter and place order affects those living on woodland manor drive, clay month street, and marcy creek roads. >> they're saying according to the fire department the first entry team has exited and is being decontaminated. they posted some pictures and we'll tweet some of those out as well and get you more information available on our nbc washington app. >> the important note there on a hot day is to keep the ac off. >> that's right. moving on to the next story. you may soon be able to take one of these.

a ride on a gondola over the potomac river. the city is getting ready to chip in $35,000 to find out if it's a good idea. according to "the washington post," the money was approved this week as part of a $13 billion spending plan. the georgetown business improvement district or georgetown bid has already raised $130,000 for a feasibility study. and we are now learning that the arlington memorial bridge will have lane closures for months. >> that's right. the national park service has implemented major restrictions. you may be asking how is this going to affect your commute. mark segraves looked into that. >> engineers were doing routine inspections and found some increased corrosion. corrosion that was happening quicker than they originally ain'ted. that forced us to take these precautions. putting in the load restriction and closing two lanes. >> reporter: it includes the closure of one lane in each

direction of the bid and no more trucks or buses. >> the bridge is safe for 99% of the users. if you're in a car or suv, the bridge is perfectly safe. the people it affects most are the buses. >> reporter: the memorial bridge is one of thousands across the country caught up in a battle between local lawmakers and congress over funding. bridges like the 14th street and south capital street bridges that will see more traffic because of restrictions on the memorial are among the bridges in our area that are also in dire need of repair. with an indefinite ban on trucks and buses, traffic experts like our partners at wto radio know this is going to have a big impact on your commute. >> everywhere everyone tries to go away from this bridge it's going to be a horrible ripple effect. >> reporter: mark segraves, news4. a former coach and parent calling for safety changes in a northern virginia little league. we'll break down what he wants

was not just one isolated case. >> reporter: dold sutherland is referring to the arrest of don essex charged with distributing child pornography. he knew essex. he coached in the little league proudly hanging up his son's winning team pictures. >> that was the all star team that won the virginia state tournament. >> reporter: but he contacted me saying there was a history in the league we left out. he tells me essex's arrest is only the latest within a a string of the league. he pointed me to a former coach and umpire. he pleaded guilty to enticing a minor. just before that john hamilton was accused of molesting five boys. he later pleaded guilty. hampton's connection to etss ex they both lived in this townhouse. here's what doland wants. >> hopefully to raise awareness in the community of the fact we
