on this saturday night, under water, more rain for an area already ravaged by historic flooding as a massive search effort intensifies for those swept away by floodwaters. highway shooting fears a sniper is on the loose in colorado. police say the victims were randomly targeted. ready to run, the newest democratic challenger to hillary clinton am coulds out swinging. he's facing an uphill battle. fighting cancer the new device that could help prevent one of the toughest side effects of cancer treatment. a program that helps kids get a big boost. nightly news begins now.

after a punishing week of historic rain and deadly flooding. the wettest rain for texas and oklahoma just got wetter. a flash flood watch remains in effect for dallas. and in hard hit wimberly texas, it's starting to dry out. more than 70 search teams, 1500 volunteers in all, intensified their efforts to find several people still missing. we begin there tonight with janet shamlian in wimberly. janet? >> reporter: good evening, floodwaters across texas are receding you would not know it to look at the fast moving blanco river right now. the storms are moving out. right now we're in the middle of a deluge tomorrow it should be dry. finally some relief for people who need it. >> as rain moved out of hard hit wimberly more than 1500 volunteers came in, many with no connection to the community. >> we're just all devastated at what happens. >> this week's

historic flood destroyed homes and lives. and with five people still missing, those wanting to help arrived from as far away as atlanta to a local church turned command center. >> we take all the real dear to our hearts. >> tackling everything from search and rescue to clearing the tons of debris still littering this central texas town. >> it's just all walks of life. all people are here. that's what's so wonderful about our state, is that when that group happened people come together. and provide support for one another. >> the help is more than welcomed by residents recovering from the storm. >> we had three and a half feet of water hit the house. >> for henry and many others it's supposed to be a weekend of carefree celebration. wimberly high school's graduation. >> you want to be happy, but you're sad on the other side. so horrendous it's horrible. >> oklahoma city also getting a break from

storms. today fema opened a disaster recovery center to help victims. throughout oklahoma and texas, officials are closely monitoring river levels. the two states in may, issued a combined 571 flash flood warnings, more than they issued in all of 2014. this morning, flash flooding closed roads in dallas. a day after a drone captured this foot average showing much of the city under water. >> south of houston, a sense of relief tonight after the colorado river crested earlier. jodi was among the residents under a mandatory evacuation order last night. >> water is dangerous to mess with. >> more rain is expected this evening. but it will pass quickly. and once it does texas will finally be in the clear. >> but the hard work will continue more than 1200 homes in this area are damaged. two more bodies were found today. 10 people in texas are still missing. peter, five of those are from right here in

wimberly. >> janet shamlian thanks. the surprise indictment of former house speaker dennis hastert. he was willing to pay millions to cover up sexual misconduct with a male student that shocked many in yorkville, illinois. that's where he used to coach and teach. kevin tibbles is there tonight. kevin? >> dennis has not been seen since he was seen here in yorkville. he was well liked. >> a former politician rose to prominence on a stellar record. a spring saturday in yorkville, illinois locals visiting the annual garden show some taking time to talk politics about a favorite political son now accused of wrongdoing. >> i feel sorry for him and his family. mostly his family. >> so what is your reaction? >> shock. we're just shocked.

>> shock over allegations that former house speaker dennis hastert has been charged with breaking federal banking laws. to conceal past misconduct. he was a popular teacher and wrestling coach here in yorkville, prior to becoming a political star in washington. the indictment says he had agreed to pay $3.5 million in hush money to someone here in yorkville. and that $1.7 million had already been withdrawn from several banks. some in amounts larger than those permitted by law without reporting them. >> the identity of the man he was allegedly paying has not been released. authorities have told nbc news it's a former student. >> at his alma matter nearby wheaton college, hastert has resigned from the board of the center of economic government and political policy that bears his name. >> former democratic political strategist once ran a campaign against hastert. >> every major

political figure has questions that follow them controversies, but there was never anything that intimated this sort of problem in hastert's past. >> reporter: the shock expressed as well today at a yorkville diner. >> i'm surprised if this is true why didn't it come out sooner. >> others take a more cynical view. >> not surprised one bit. just seems the norm now with politicians running wild with sex scandals money scandals you know. just basic thievery. >> in the place that sent hastert to washington general concern as well. >> we think we're doing the very best by voting people in because they have a squeaky clean record. all of those allegations. worries me he's not the only one, of course. >> hastert has not commented on the charges, he is reportedly due to be arraigned in federal court next week. peter? >> kevin tibbles in

illinois tonight, kevin, thanks. >> the fbi is offering $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for two recent shootings in colorado that may be related and now have authorities worried about the possibility of more. we get that story tonight from jacob rastone. >> reporter: what appeared to be unrelated crimes in colorado may be the work of a serial shooter. the fatal shooting of john jacoby gunned down last week. and the close call for 20-year-old cory ramiro shot in the neck last month. >> the public needs to be vigilant observant, and if they see any suspicious activity report it to your local law enforcement so we can investigate. >> the attacks occurred north of denver about five miles apart, near where a dozen drivers have reported random blown out windows. police have not found evidence connecting those cases to the attacks. the fbi has joined the

investigation offering a $10,000 reward forming a task force with local law enforcement. >> we will resolve these issues as quickly as possible. >> random shootings on our highways and roads are not uncommon. >> snipers killed 10 people in washington, d.c. and virginia. a few years later, shooters in arizona killed at least 6 people and injured 19 along the streets of phoenix. a man in kansas city shot at 12 cars injuring three people. the gunmen in all cases were eventually caught. >> authorities recovered physical evidence from each location linking the shootings, but are pleading for help. >> the public is critical in a case like this. all these cases are broken by some help from the public. >> a manhunt now for a shooter on the roadways of colorado who authorities fear may be just getting started. jacob rascon nbc news. martin o'malley is running for president giving hillary clinton

a second democratic challenger. he's an underdog in this race. o'malley came out swinging today. kristen welker has more. >> reporter: former maryland governor martin o'malley made it official today. >> to all that can hear my voice, i declare that i am a candidate for president of the united states. >> reporter: casting himself as a front-runner to hillary clinton. o'malley took a shot at clinton and the other legacy candidate, republican jeb bush. >> the presidency is not a crown to be passed back and forth by you between two royal families. >> welcome to the race gov o'malley looking forward to discussing strong families and communities. he's facing an uphill battle. the riots in baltimore could complicate his message. >> some blame o'malley's tough on crime policies when he was baltimore's mayor for the current

tension tension. a small group protested his announcement today. he'll address the root issues like poverty and despair. >> what took place here is not only about race not about policing in america. it was about everything it is supposed to mean to be an american. >> polls show o'malley barely registers with voters vermont senator bernie sanders who also announced he's running this week. >> the billionaire class, i say that your greed has got to end. >> and the republican field continues to grow. former new york governor george pataki threw his hat into the ring this week. and his gop challengers have been out in force. >> the president and hillary clinton seem to think when it comes to growth that you grow the economy by growing washington. >> the republican field is crowded. the democratic race just got a little more competitive today.

>> if he can build an organization develop a campaign war chest and campaign effectively, he could pose a next generation challenge to hillary clinton. >> and campaign aids say clinton called o'malley before his announcement today. a discussion described as brief but cordial. former rhode island governor lincoln chaffey is prepared to announce he's running this coming week. >> kristen welker thank you. a political fight over provisions of the patriot act, set to expire barely 24 hours from now. they've allowed the government to collect millions of phone records. with this deadline looming, washington is gearing up for a contentious last minute vote tomorrow. the president supports an extension, some like senator rand paul are vowing to kill it tweeting i will force the exploration of the nsa illegal spy program. chuck todd is moderator of meet the

press. a lot of back and forth here what is really at stake if the senate fails to pass this? >> the question is going to be who is in charge of keeping this bulk data. bulk data as far as congress is concerned is going to be here to stay is it with the government or the tech company. the house has passed something called the usa freedom act, which would replace the provision in the patriot act that rand paul is upset about. rand paul is right, he will force the official expiration of this bulk collection of data at midnight tomorrow night. that's going to happen period. hard stop. then what will happen he'll have two or three days where the government won't have the ability to do this what's lakely to happen the senate will pass this house bill that will then put it in the hands of the tech companies to hold this data and then the government can get access to it if they get a court order, here's the wild card in all this it's not clear that the telephone companies or

the telecon company have to do this and in fact some senators believe it's likely tele telecon companies will decide not to cooperate with the government and brag about it and use it as a marketing vehicle to say to consumers, we care about your privacy, we told the government no. >> this debate has already created some unlikely alliances between republicans on one hand democrats on the other, who are as concerned about national security as they are about civil liberties? >> it's fascinating, this is a lot of presidential politics. it was interesting to have this come after kristen's piece about the presidential race because in effect tomorrow is a u.s. senate sanctioned political rally for rand paul he's going to be able to claim what he did, make it a big deal. his supporters care about that he will shut down the patriot act for about 48 hours. the problem is, he won't declare ultimate victory, some form of this is going to get passed by congress and approved by the president. >> thanks so much. the patriot act

we return to baltimore. the unrest exposed the city's desperate need for role models. so many of them searching for hope and direction. trying to fill that void hundreds of volunteers. here's nbc's ron allen. >> hassan banks may not have to play alone much longer. and it's the riots in baltimore that may help him achieve his dreams. >> what do you want to be when you grow up? >> aerodynamic engineer. >> why is that? for nine months he's been on the waiting list of big brother, big sister. the mentoring network.
