good morning, derrick. >> reporter: indeed it is a sad day in washington i imagine in delaware as well and in the white housish the administration after this loss of the vice president's son who was just 46 years old. joseph biden iii known as beau the oldest son of the vice president joe biden. he was recently admitted to walter reed national military medical center after falling ill. back in 2010 he suffered a stroke. two years ago, what doctors describe as a small leagues wassion with us removed from his brain. he served with the air national guard, part of the judge advocate awarded bronze star. he also served as delaware's attorney general and declined to run for re-election for that seat. it was said he was doing to seek the governor's seat in that state next year. there have been statements of sympathy and condolences

outcoming from the vice president's family and from the white house. the vice president says beau's life was defined by service to others and the entire biden familiened beyond words. beau's spirit will live on in all of us. president obama released a statement as well saying beau was good big-hearted devoutly catholic and deeply faithful man who made a difference in the lives he touched. the spirit will live on in their hearts. he was survived by his wife and two children. actually beau survived a car wreck back in 1972 that killed his mother and sister so this family is no stranger to grief. you just have to pile on what happened yesterday. we are told that if there is some sort of remembrance here at the national observatory where the vice president's mansion is as well they will be putting flowers on the anchor there by the national observatory clock. we haven't seen anybody do that yet. people have come beand sort of

there is an amazing new procedure doctors are testing in virginia. how doctors are removing tumors from children without any surgery. >> it felt like a monster eating my leg because it hurt so much. >> this 10-year-old said the pain in her leg was so miserable she had to stop doing her favorite activity swimming. >> i couldn't walk. i couldn't run. i couldn't do anything but lay down and cry. >> reporter: doctors eventually diagnosed her with benign tumor on femur bone. >> we were nervous. when you hear the word tumor, oh my god, what's going to happen now. >> it can affect walking. in older children that are school age, it certainly affects their ability to sleep at night. it affects their quality of life quite a bit. >> dr. sharma, interventional radiologist at children national health system said for years these types of tumors were

removed with surgery. that meant a long recovery time and risk of complications. >> that surgery was definitely more invasive and required more immobility and crutches and bedrest. >> more recently doctors started burning out the groth by inserting a needle with heat spot tumor. they would use ct scan during procedure to help guide the needles past. that left kids at risk of infection and exposed them to radiation, too. now, though doctors are exploring a research procedure that doesn't involve any cutting. it's something called mr-hifu. doctors use an mri machine to guide ultrasound beams do the tumor so it's heated and destroyed. >> the difference is there is no needle scalpel and incision. >> and no exposure to radiation. >> with the new technology this will be a day in day out and you'll be done will it was so true. >> she upd went seven 20-second

there. they had almost 20 inches of rain in oklahoma city the month of may. by comparison, the last time we had a rainfall amount close to that june of 2006 we had a 14 inch rainfall month in washington and our all-time wettest month september of 1934 was only 17 1/3 inches. so oklahoma city had more of any month on rainfall in washington and they are still getting rain today. meanwhile not only have we not been getting much in the way of rain our way, it's been crazy warm. the month of may we've already had six 90 degree days. today would make number seven. ample temperature for the month, 72.9 average highs and lows. warmest day on record records dating back to 1874 1991. we're only a tenth of a degree behind that if we make 92 we'll probably set record for warmest

may. already 70 outside, south wind averaging 13 miles an hour. at least we've got the breeze helping us out. it's going to be hot and humid outside today. 77 baltimore, gaithersburg leesburg, winchester stafford. hourly temperatures right at 9 0 degrees about 3:00 4:00 this afternoon. i'm forecasting 90 for our high today. if we get any little bit warmer than that probably break the record for the warmest may. future weather by 2:00 hit and miss showers starting to get going in daytime heating. rain chances remain highest from blue ridge westbound into the shenandoah valley. by 5:00 6:00 7:00 showers and storms likely from hagerstown to frederick to martins burglary to winchester to luray. with time they will graze northwestern side of the metro. one or two of those storms could be on the strong to potentially severe side. keep a weather eye to the sky if you're planning to be outside massachusetts of the day. rain chances 30 or 40% today.

news 4 learned from court documents of the 19 burglaries that could be linked nearly half of the homes in the west springfield fairfax station area. seven of them are in subdivisions off ox road. most homes have long driveways and back up to wooded areas. losses are big. at this home they got away with $110,000 worth of jewelry and flat wear. smith wishes there had been more of a community alert. >> i think the whole area should definitely have been notified more. >> fairfax police say they do post on their website every day. bad guys know how to stay a step ahead. >> they pick one house here another in another part of the country. it is hard to link them other than a large yard or back to woods. police tres they haven't given up trying to solve these subdivision burglaries but right now they don't have any suspect description. fairfax county news 4.

weighing fitness trackers to stay in shape. >> do you ever wonder how accurate they are? consumer reporter erika gonzalez did and she found out the answers. >> reporter: it's a great time of year to start moving. gain motivation. the results are likely tallied by one of these, fitness trackers. but are they accurate? professor and his team at iowa state university department of kinesiology test fitness trackers to see if they are recording precise results. >> very little information provided by the company about value idaho it. as a researcher, that's important to us. >> they tested four monitors, fitbit flex and misfit shine both $100, a price tag of jawbone up24, $130, nike $200. 56 people participated ages to 65. they spent 20 minutes doing

sedentary activities like working on a computer. then 25 minutes of aerobic exercise and 25 minutes using various weight machines. researchers compared the trackers to this mobile machine that measures oxygen consumption to determine calories burned. results show all four trackers either overestimated or underestimated activity. overall he found fitbit flex, jawbone up 24 and nike fuelband se provided reasonably estimates for calories burned. the fitbit flex and nike fuel band both tested off about 17%, the jawbone up 24. that off 18%. the misfit shine off by 30% that may seem like a lot. let's say trackers tracks 1,000 calories burned. if it's off 18%, that's 108 calorie difference. >> there's some serious technology inside the devices. >> as for aerobic activity the largest error from the misfit shine, off 60%.

the biggest problem found in resistance, weight machines. >> you're lifting an object with your hands moving fairly slow but you're doing a lot of work. so it's not able to capture that. >> we contacted the manufacturers of the fitness trackers tested. misfit told us iowa state's study conflicts with its own scientific study and believes there are problem with the university's methodology resulting in skewed data. it also questions the way the university recorded calories burned. misfit believes the tracker used in the study was damaged was -- because participants of the study all used the same tracker. fitbit told us while there may ab small difference of a few calories between tests, ultimately the success of our products comes from empowering users actually see their overall health fitness trends over time. the other companies did not respond in time for our story. so at the end of the day, does welk think fitness trackers are worth it. >> i think the key to consumer
