developing right now, one dead and several people shot at a park in prince georges county. the connection this violent outbreak may have to a story we reported last night. an elderly woman dies after a fire in fairfax county. what sparked the flames and why investigators say this tragedy could have been prevented. and a muslim chaplin says she was denied a soda on a flight to d.c. what happened next had her in tears and had the airline apologizing. gentleman four people shot at a park and one did not survive.

good evening, everyone. the gunshots shattered the peace at ardmore parkfternoon and police are wondering if it's connected to a deadly shooting last night. news4's darcy spencer is live on the scene. >> reporter: erika this is simply a trang day beautiful day in the park turns to violence. take a look. this is the park we are talking about. you can see that it is surrounded by crime scene tape. investigators still here on the scene. they are still searching for a potential murder suspect. we do believe there could be a connection to a shooting that happened yesterday afternoon a little more than a mile away. an argument at the ardmore neighborhood park led to gunfire. four people were shot near the basketball court at the park on ard wick ardmore road in spring dale this sunday afternoon. died. sources say this may be connected to a fatal shooting saturday afternoon on horn beam court in glenn arden. >> some folks were using the park. it was a busy day in our park. and a car pulled up in the parking lot and opened fire on

four people who weren't expecting that. and a tragedy has resulted. >> reporter: friends of one of the shooting victims gathered across the street from the park. they come here every sunday to play horseshoes. they say one of their friends was shot. >> we usually up here every sunday pitching horseshoes with one of the guys that pitch horseshoes with us i understand he got shot. it is not, from what i understand is not grave or anything. the information i got was it was a stray bullet that hit him. >> reporter: after the shooting two of the victims were driven to the st. wroteself fire station a mile away. this white chevy impala with virginia tag was found a little more than a mile away at the east point business park on parliament drive, also part of the investigation, but police would not say how it's connected. back at the park maryland national capital park police are leading the investigation. they shut down this park on a steamy hot sunday as they search for a killer. >> i'm very concerned, because i

have three boys that grow up here. they will come up here to play basketball every sunday. and for this to go on is just -- it's heartbreaking. >> reporter: it certainly is. so far, police have not released a description of the car that that shooter fired from. they say they are still working on that information. when they get it they will pass it on and we will surely share it with you. erika, back to you. thanks so much darcy. as she just mentioned, today's shooting comes just hours after another deadly attack. this one in glenn arden. someone shot and killed peter edwards of d.c. yesterday evening near martin luther king jr. highway and bar low road. just a quick five-minute drive from today's scene. no word yet if the shootings are connected and police have no suspects in custody. we have learned the identity of an 87-year-old woman who died in a townhouse fire in fairfax county. her name chow win. police say burning incense in the bedroom ignited the fire last night on bradwater street.

win and her son overcome bit smoke. someone performed cpr on her until firefighters took over but they could not save her life. win's son, however, is now out of the hospital. we have looked. the townhouse did not have working smoke detectors. outrage on social media after a muslim chaplin claims a united airlines flight attendant discriminated against her. the airline is calling this a misunderstanding. according to nbcnews.com this all began with tahara ahmad asked for an unopened can of coke. she didn't want it opened for hygienic reasons. the attendant said it was against their policy but then handed a man an unopened can of beer. the attendant then took the beer and opened it saying that she didn't want him to use it as a weapon. ahmad says another passenger yelled a racial slurs at her. here's part of her facebook post. "i can't help but cry on this plane because i thought people would defend me and say

something." american airlines however, says the flight attendant tried to accommodate ahmad's request several times. developing right now, in less than six hours, parts of the patriot act set to expire. so senators came in for a rare sunday session to try and reach a compromise on this. no deal by midnight means the national security agency will no longer be able to collect your phone records without a warrant. senators have two options, advance the house-passed usa freedom act which reforms the collection program or extend the provision as is. kentucky senator rand paul has vowed to block all votes before midnight forcing the program to expire. a broken water main not weather is likely to blame for flash flooding today in atlanta. this is what the downtown connector looked like this morning, stranded cars with water up to their doors. no word tonight what caused the

water main break, but storms did complicate the situation. about two inches of rain fell in those parts of atlanta. and turning to our weather, we sent you an alert about thunderstorm warnings this afternoon. the warnings have expired, but there is still a few strong storms out there. amelia is in the storm center with more on what we can expect. mill? >> erika, those warnings were west of the area back in parts of west virginia and virginia, that kind of buttons up to west virginia. here is the latest on storm team4 radar, two compact downpours moving northeast through the area, this one passing over the john hanson highway heading toward herndon, showing signs of fizzling making its way toward gaithersburg. i will be posting the snapshot on my twitter and facebook pages. widespread activity back around the mountains. right now at 86. an few isolated thunderstorms this evening as we get into the overnight hours. i can't rule out some rain because of that widespread thunderstorm activity over the mountains. by the time it gets here though

just rain. heavy rain is in the forecast for tomorrow i will have more on that erika in ten minutes. meanwhile, emotions ran high in southeast d.c. this afternoon where dozens of people came together to remember shar niece milton. the 27-year-old was a reporter for capital community news. police say a gunman riding with a group of dirt bike riders shot and killed her last week at the intersection of good hope road and alabama avenue. it is believed that the suspect was trying to shoot someone in another group of riders and milton was merely an inspectnocent by stander. while her parents put faith in the police department they want answers. >> they have over 20 officers looking, but i'm confused. why does it take 20 detectives to find the one person who is gonna tell the truth? >> miltons say they plan to lay their daughter to rest next saturday. we are just hours from the start of the atlantic hurricane season. why forecasters say the

secretary of state john kerry will have to spend the night at a swiss hospital after breaking his leg riding a bicycle. he was rushed to a hospital in geneva this morning. doctors say he needs to be under observation before flying back home tomorrow. the state department says kerry hit a curb and fractured his right femur but will make a full recovery. kerry had to cut out the rest of his four-nation trip he was negotiating with iran on a nuclear deal. members of both parties have come together to express condolences to vice president joe biden after his son lost a battle with brain cancer. today, the first family made a personal visit to the vice presidential residence in northwest washington. beau biden died on saturday. he was 46 years old. heavy rain could impact you later in the day tomorrow. amelia's coming up next with the timing and, of course with your full forecast.

it was all part of the national capital area cinderella ball. the annual event honors military children who live with life-threatening illnesses or disabilities. and as this report shows us it was also a chance to make them feel like the belle or the beau of the ball. >> reporter: they got the red carpet treatment, complete with a military sword salute even an entrancella would envism they weren't on the red carpet but benefited. >> new opportunity, meet new people help those who wouldn't get a chance to do this. >> reporter: the tenth annual cinderella ball for the house inc. is for children of military families, children with disabilities and special needs. today, it was all about special treatment. >> i love it. >> reporter:resplendent in his tie and tux, waiting for his chance. he wanted to dance with cinderella cinderella.

monster storm. maryland's emergency management director says people in our area may have a false sense of security and if the evacuation order comes, traffic choke holds in maryland and virginia could be a real issue. and we want to take a look at the radar this evening because amelia's been tracking some storms seems like the rain moving in another shot for folks this evening. going to be more likely dealing with rain actually tomorrow especially during the afternoon, evening and overnight hours and during that time period it could be torrential. very heavy rain one to two inches is possible. here is the latest on storm team4 radar, tracking mainly two cells right now, one of them did make their way over 50. i want to correct myself from earlier. the john mostby highway right now, continuing to move off to the northeast, that other cell making its way toward the gaithersburg area not picking up lightning, but notice the colors bright yellow there. that indicates very heavy rain. aside from that for the most

part the immediate area is dry. a lone cell here moving from st. mary's to cal investment county and then more widespread activity mainly back over west virginia. i'm going to be tracking this during the evening hours on facebook and twitter and this will bring us the chance of rain overnight tonight. here are your weather headlines, downpours in the forecast later tomorrow and then after that remains unsettled, on into next weekend, the chance of showers or thunderstorms in the forecast every day. we will get a break from temperatures and humidity around the midweek, around wednesday and thursday. tomorrow the weather having a moderate to potentially even high impact on your day because of the late-day downpours that are in the forecast. have the umbrella handy tomorrow. rain and thunderstorms in the forecast especially during the afternoon and evening hours there is the chance of a shower tomorrow morning, here we are at 6 a.m. on future weather, notice the activity there. otherwise, cloudy skies as we get into the midday and afternoon hours, we will continue to see thunderstorms bubble up across the area
