major delays but as this goes into the rush hour we are expecting to some tie-ups. back to you in the studio. good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm eun yang. we want to check our forecast at 5:01. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here to tell us about the rain. >> some of us are sleep deprived from the loud thunder coming through. all the flashes of lightning, that passed over north washington. now into northern delaware. just getting a few light sprinkles here around the metro area. a batch of light rain passing ought of fairfax county in -- passing out of fairfax county and much of prince george's county it is raining very lightly. then it's going to continue to track to northern calvert county and anne arundel over the next hour or so. later today, flash flood watch in effect. all the counties in green, prince george, arlington, the district, and anne arundel

county. howard and frederick and maryland. all the counties in green could have torrential downpours with one to two inch rates per hour of heavy rain coming on through. watch out for some high water. we could have some flash flooding this afternoon. so a mild morning. your headlines for first day of june. a stormy evening. looks like most of those coming into the metro area later on this evening. now let's check on our traffic morning. we have a water main break causing a few problems. what's going on with that? >> that's right. news4's megan mcgrath gave us an update, this southbound 395 ramp to westbound king street is closed due to the water main break. that's on westbound king street right at 395. one lane is getting by in that area. taking a look at the beltway in montgomery county, new hampshire avenue all lanes are open. all the way down to the melt no reports of incidents or delays there. 66 out of centerville and manassas passing through oakton up to the beltway, we have no reports of incidents or delays.

looking good on the beltway in prince george's county. >> thank you. there's a funeral service for the family found brutally murdered in d.c. someone killed the savopouloses along with their housekeeper veralicia figueroa last month. a rockville man accused of killing his neighbors will be in court today. scott tomaszewski arrived from alaska days ago. officers arrested him while he was oup a cruise -- on a cruise there. they say he stabbed the vilardos to death last month. i'm angie goff at the live desk. this morning the u.s. has officially fewer tools to track terrorism. the u.s. surveillance program expired after republican running for president blocked the final vote to extend it. rand paul killed the patriot act

and the government can no longer collect your phone data in bulk temporarily. also expired -- a provision to track lone wolves and the use of roving wiretaps. so what happens now? the senate still trying to figure things out. we could see a final vote on the alternative to replace the patriot act in a couple days. eun? >> angie goff, thank you. today local lawmakers will save the roads you take to work every day. at noon, eleanor holmes norton along with virginia congressman don buyer and tim kaine will introduce the save our national parks transportation act. they'll make that announcement in the arlington memorial bridge. it will authorize more than $460 million to fund repairs on federal roads like the memorial bridge. the kutz bridge will have repairs today. that longs alongside the tidal basin. they'll widen the south sidewalks so that means with americans with disabilities act,

it provides more room for pedestrians and cyclists. montgomery county police investigating why two cars slammed into each other and leaving one person dead. police are on the scene investing in derwood. that happened 11:30 last night. you can see the damage that the impact did to both cars. montgomery county fire says on condition. the police department now saying that the other driver, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. an american held in prison in egypt for two years is now recovering on u.s. soil. with one hand in the air, that's mohamed soltan. he was jailed in 2013 for his alleged involvement with the now outlawed muslim brotherhood. his father remains in prison.

you're watching "news4 today." >> your time is 5:15. one person is dead and three others hurt after a drive by shooting at a prince george's county park. this happened yesterday in springdale. dozens of people were in the park and enjoying the weather

when someone drove by the basketball courts and started shooting. >> we were facing the basketball court and all of a sudden i heard something go pop pop pop pop. i couldn't believe it. i couldn't believe it sitting in the park with our backs turned and people shooting behind us. >> four people were hit. the person who died was taken to the nearby fire station before being transported to the hospital. the police are trying to figure out the motive behind the shooting. family members are now planning a funeral for a fairfax county woman who died in a fire. this happened late saturday. burning incense set a bedroom on fire in the townhouse on brad water street. 87-year-old chow nguyen breathed in too much smoke. the home did not have any working smoke alarms. a developing story out of california now. a 9-year-old girl seriously hurt after a car slammed into a wall

at one of the terminal's in l.a.x. take a look here. you can see the car wedged into the wall in los angeles. the girl was stand on the side walk when the car veered out of the outer lane and jumped the sidewalk. a second pedestrian was seriously hurt. police says it looks like the 67-year-old driver mixed up the gas and brake pedals. a tragic story out of missouri. someone shot a 3-year-old boy in the head. the boy died. according to police, the toddler was at home when that shooting happened yesterday. they say someone driving down the street fired into his house. the death toll from the blistering heat wave in india passed 2,200. it started in mid april. yesterday, temperatures peaked at 113 degrees in new delhi. forecasters say the sweltering conditions will be there for the next few days. the top prosecutors in two maryland counties now say

they're going to review each other's cases if they involve fatal shootings by police officers. that's according to "the washington post." the new agreement is between howard and montgomery counties. it's believed to be the first of its kind in maryland and the prosecutors say this is all about keeping the justice system transparent and building trust in the communities. are 5:18. a new study giving new hope to families with young children suffering from cancer. child survivors are living a lot longer than they may have decades ago. in the 1970s, about 18% of kids who had cancer for five years ultimately died within 30 years. today only 12% die from health issues. researchers say it's because of improvements in treatment. keeping your kids safe around water is critical as we head into summer. one way to do that is getting your kids into the water while still young. infant swimming classes are designed for kids 6 months to 6 years old. instructors teach the children

how to jump in from the steps and swim all the way across the pool. whenever they feel the need to breathe they learn to float on their backs. the instructor says that nothing replaces watching your children closely. >> just because the children are skilled and they can save themselves no one is ever drown proof that's why supervision is critical. >> now, if you have a pool or just live near water, you should install proper locks and alarms and gates around the perimeter of the pool. mental health america says 300,000 screens have been taken for depression anxiety, bipolar disorder and ptsd. that's about a thousand screenings a day. it will be tailored for 11 to 17-year-olds. 75% of the screeners are women. mental health america is holding

plywood. there won't be formal classes but instead they're focused on help them recover from the disaster. baltimore just ended its deadliest month in 40 years. three deadly shootings yesterday brought may's homicide count to 43 and not since the early 70s has the city seen that many murders in one month. there have been 116 homicides in baltimore so far this year. by this time last year, homicide homicides had not hit triple digits. pele says that he stands behind fifa president sepp blatter. he won another term as president last week, despite massive outcry over corruption in soccer. the story has dominated newspapers in the country, south africa. the scandal is disappointing. starting today, it is going to cost you more to visit great falls park in mclean.

he was considered the front-runner to become delaware's next governor. but he didn't take that for granted. >> he didn't want to rest on his dad's laurels. i think that was part of why he didn't run for senate and wanted to run for governor. >> this type of cancer takes the lives of 15,000 adults in the u.s. every year. a government watchdog says the u.s. paid more than $20 million in social security benefits to former nazis. this is according to the associated press. the justice department used the social security payments as a way to persuade former nazis to leave the u.s. as many as 133 suspected nazis war criminals and others received benefits for decades. secretary of state john kerry plans to return to the u.s. today to be treated for a broken leg. he broke it in a bicycle crash. he had been in geneva for six hours of meetings with the iranian foreign minister. the two are working on details of a controversial nuclear

you're watching "news4 today." >> the family of a d.c. reporter who was murdered is calling for justice for charnice. charnice milton died in a shooting last week. her funeral is this coming saturday. at a vigil yesterday her parents prayed for peace. >> lord god, i pray for the mothers who have lost theirbabies to the street. i pray for redemption. i pray right now for holiness. >> milton's family held the vigil where she died. police believe she was an innocent bystander caught in the middle of a shooting. a 22-year-old college student is charged with killing his mother during an argument over his grades. police in alabama say that tyler banslet beat his mother to death. during the argument, he hit her in the head with a baseball bat.

the 22-year-old attended the university of alabama birmingham. it's now 5:47. leaders are learning about lyme disease. this morning the morn council of governments is holding a special forum about this illness. the people there will learn the best ways to keep hikers and foresters, outdoor workers from getting lyme's disease. they plan to talk about preserving forest and trees in our area. that's a possibility new case of ebola in maryland. the baltimore health commissioner says the doctors at johns hopkins are treating him right now. he recently returned from sierra leone. doctors have not confirmed this is an actual new case. today, senator lindsey graham will become the latest republican to join the race for the white house. he's a national security hawk and a close friend of john mccain. he wants to send an additional

10,000 u.s. troops to iraq to help stabilize that region and he has blasted the president for nuclear talks with iran. he's a 59-year-old senator and retired air force lawyer and he's considered a long shot due to low poll numbers. martin o'malley continues to hit early voting states. he told voters in new hampshire that he relishes tough fights. new hampshire is the home of the first presidential primary and hillary clinton's strong hold. o'malley is the third democrat to jump into the race. today, the rockville city council will discuss building new schools. the new proposal would halt development when a school reaches 120% of the program capacity. the current standard is 110%. supporters say it helps to protect the schools from overcrowding. councilman moore said the current standard is ineffective. fewer students at montgomery

county public schools are getting suspended. since 2009, suspension rates have dropped 47% at schools. the suspension rates dropped across the different racial group, however, black and hispanic students receive more suspensions than white and asian students. some fairy tales are coming true in downtown washington. it happened this weekend at the tenth annual cinderella ball. it was held at the intercontinental hotel. the guests of honor are children of military families who have disabilities or special needs. the guests looked gorgeous, especially one man who couldn't wait to dance with cinderella. >> she was adorable. >> they catered to his needs. he's like a prince and, you know he's danced with a lot more girls than i ever did when i was at prom. >> we're so happy for everyone and so happy for the people who put this on.

little bit of light rain. behind that the cloud cover will break up a little bit and then the flash flood watch for all the counties in green, montgomery, the district, anne arundel, howard, frederick, for some heavy downpours could be up to one to two inches per hour. and now here's the storm timing. looks like we'll be fine all the way through around 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon. it's after that we'll begin to see a line of showers and thunderstorms begin to develop in the shenandoah valley. we'll be getting closer to the metro area, but that's not until 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. much of the heavier downpours in the flash flood watch zone north and west of the metro area. then the heavier downpours between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. flashes of lightning. could have some high water. watch out for that. then it tracks to the south and the east. maybe a few lingering thundershowers in northern

during your drive to work today. news4's megan mcgrath has more on this breaking news. megan? >> reporter: well if you look behind me here you can see that the water has receded. this ever been -- they have been able to shut off the water from the water main break, but all of the gravel and the debris that we have here across the roadway. now this is westbound king street. you can see that we're down to one lane getting by to the left because of the water main that broke overnight. we have an issue with 395. headed south on 395 that ramp taking you westbound on to king street that ramp is completely closed. we'll make you go off to the left, head east. at that point you could do a u turn. a light volume of traffic. still kind of early this the morning so we're not seeing any major traffic tie-ups. but of course they haven't begun the repair work yet. so this is going to be with us for a while. this is obviously a very heavily travelled road. king street, so we are expecting some traffic tie-ups later on
