it provides more room for pedestrians and cyclists. montgomery county police investigating why two cars slammed into each other and leaving one person dead. police are on the scene investing in derwood. that happened 11:30 last night. you can see the damage that the impact did to both cars. montgomery county fire says on condition. the police department now saying that the other driver, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. an american held in prison in egypt for two years is now recovering on u.s. soil. with one hand in the air, that's mohamed soltan. he was jailed in 2013 for his alleged involvement with the now outlawed muslim brotherhood. his father remains in prison.

when someone drove by the basketball courts and started shooting. >> we were facing the basketball court and all of a sudden i heard something go pop pop pop pop. i couldn't believe it. i couldn't believe it sitting in the park with our backs turned and people shooting behind us. >> four people were hit. the person who died was taken to the nearby fire station before being transported to the hospital. the police are trying to figure out the motive behind the shooting. family members are now planning a funeral for a fairfax county woman who died in a fire. this happened late saturday. burning incense set a bedroom on fire in the townhouse on brad water street. 87-year-old chow nguyen breathed in too much smoke. the home did not have any working smoke alarms. a developing story out of california now. a 9-year-old girl seriously hurt after a car slammed into a wall

at one of the terminal's in l.a.x. take a look here. you can see the car wedged into the wall in los angeles. the girl was stand on the side walk when the car veered out of the outer lane and jumped the sidewalk. a second pedestrian was seriously hurt. police says it looks like the 67-year-old driver mixed up the gas and brake pedals. a tragic story out of missouri. someone shot a 3-year-old boy in the head. the boy died. according to police, the toddler was at home when that shooting happened yesterday. they say someone driving down the street fired into his house. the death toll from the blistering heat wave in india passed 2,200. it started in mid april. yesterday, temperatures peaked at 113 degrees in new delhi. forecasters say the sweltering conditions will be there for the next few days. the top prosecutors in two maryland counties now say

they're going to review each other's cases if they involve fatal shootings by police officers. that's according to "the washington post." the new agreement is between howard and montgomery counties. it's believed to be the first of its kind in maryland and the prosecutors say this is all about keeping the justice system transparent and building trust in the communities. are 5:18. a new study giving new hope to families with young children suffering from cancer. child survivors are living a lot longer than they may have decades ago. in the 1970s, about 18% of kids who had cancer for five years ultimately died within 30 years. today only 12% die from health issues. researchers say it's because of improvements in treatment. keeping your kids safe around water is critical as we head into summer. one way to do that is getting your kids into the water while still young. infant swimming classes are designed for kids 6 months to 6 years old. instructors teach the children

how to jump in from the steps and swim all the way across the pool. whenever they feel the need to breathe they learn to float on their backs. the instructor says that nothing replaces watching your children closely. >> just because the children are skilled and they can save themselves no one is ever drown proof that's why supervision is critical. >> now, if you have a pool or just live near water, you should install proper locks and alarms and gates around the perimeter of the pool. mental health america says 300,000 screens have been taken for depression anxiety, bipolar disorder and ptsd. that's about a thousand screenings a day. it will be tailored for 11 to 17-year-olds. 75% of the screeners are women. mental health america is holding

the 22-year-old attended the university of alabama birmingham. it's now 5:47. leaders are learning about lyme disease. this morning the morn council of governments is holding a special forum about this illness. the people there will learn the best ways to keep hikers and foresters, outdoor workers from getting lyme's disease. they plan to talk about preserving forest and trees in our area. that's a possibility new case of ebola in maryland. the baltimore health commissioner says the doctors at johns hopkins are treating him right now. he recently returned from sierra leone. doctors have not confirmed this is an actual new case. today, senator lindsey graham will become the latest republican to join the race for the white house. he's a national security hawk and a close friend of john mccain. he wants to send an additional

10,000 u.s. troops to iraq to help stabilize that region and he has blasted the president for nuclear talks with iran. he's a 59-year-old senator and retired air force lawyer and he's considered a long shot due to low poll numbers. martin o'malley continues to hit early voting states. he told voters in new hampshire that he relishes tough fights. new hampshire is the home of the first presidential primary and hillary clinton's strong hold. o'malley is the third democrat to jump into the race. today, the rockville city council will discuss building new schools. the new proposal would halt development when a school reaches 120% of the program capacity. the current standard is 110%. supporters say it helps to protect the schools from overcrowding. councilman moore said the current standard is ineffective. fewer students at montgomery

county public schools are getting suspended. since 2009, suspension rates have dropped 47% at schools. the suspension rates dropped across the different racial group, however, black and hispanic students receive more suspensions than white and asian students. some fairy tales are coming true in downtown washington. it happened this weekend at the tenth annual cinderella ball. it was held at the intercontinental hotel. the guests of honor are children of military families who have disabilities or special needs. the guests looked gorgeous, especially one man who couldn't wait to dance with cinderella. >> she was adorable. >> they catered to his needs. he's like a prince and, you know he's danced with a lot more girls than i ever did when i was at prom. >> we're so happy for everyone and so happy for the people who put this on.

"news4 today" begins with breaking news. >> water no longer gushing into the streets in alexandria but you can see when it was there was a water main break in the city. >> it could be a big problem

during your drive to work today. news4's megan mcgrath has more on this breaking news. megan? >> reporter: well if you look behind me here you can see that the water has receded. this ever been -- they have been able to shut off the water from the water main break, but all of the gravel and the debris that we have here across the roadway. now this is westbound king street. you can see that we're down to one lane getting by to the left because of the water main that broke overnight. we have an issue with 395. headed south on 395 that ramp taking you westbound on to king street that ramp is completely closed. we'll make you go off to the left, head east. at that point you could do a u turn. a light volume of traffic. still kind of early this the morning so we're not seeing any major traffic tie-ups. but of course they haven't begun the repair work yet. so this is going to be with us for a while. this is obviously a very heavily travelled road. king street, so we are expecting some traffic tie-ups later on
