eeper. as hundreds packed the greek orthodox cathedral, tried to make sense of it a speaker said out of this tragedy came an explosion of love and sympathy. news 4's meagna fitzgerald has more on the emotional service. >> reporter: it's a day no one could have ever expected. >> wonderful kid. >> beautiful family. >> reporter: a day where three family members of this beautiful family were remembered in a funeral service filled with hundreds of people. before the service started at st. sophia greek orthodox cathedral, the caskets carried inside. church officials say phillip carried by some of his classmates. this is the church where savvas savopoulos and amy got married and church leaders say phillip was baptized almost ten years ago to the day. >> wonderful tribute to the family. >> reporter: the family selfless contributions to the community and love for others was shared during the service. a friend of the family even

saying the priests recalled the bright smile sitting in the church with his mother a few weeks before they died. >> despite their accomplishments, they still wanted to help people make a difference in people's lives. >> reporter: on monday their lives remembered. and the examples savvas and amy set for their children will live on through the two teenage daughters left behind. >> absolutely crushing. absolutely crushing. i still can't believe it. >> reporter: now, after the service, there was a reception held for the family in the church hall. many neighbors from this neighborhood were there, as well. some folks who could see walking home after the service had ended. coming up at 6:00 we spoke with a guy who went to high school with savvas and amy savopoulos and he shares his impressions of the service. an intern facing firearm charges accused of trying to

bring an unloaded handgun into a house office building. joshua wheeler was stopped at the entrance of the office building this morning. they say he had an unloaded 9-millimeter gun. he just started the internship with the house republican conference. vice chair two weeks ago. a statement from the office says this appears to be an accident. wheeler is on temporary leave. and dennis hastert in court later this week to face federal charges. accused of living to the feds about bank withdrawals. but he allegedly planned to use as hush money. a source tells nbc news the case involves alleged sexual misconduct that a student at the school where hastert once coached and taught. court papers say he agreed to pay that individual more than $3 million. seeing a rare look inside the weakening arlington memorial bridge steel beams and now eroded through in some places. news 4's transportation reporter

adam tuss has a look at what's being done to fix it. >> reporter: from the surface, the memorial bridge is indeed a thing of beauty. but step inside and you can see what's really going on. >> the level of kroegs at the base here. >> reporter: corroded steel all over the place. steps that are unsafe marked with orange. some steel about three quarters of an inch thick paper thin and see through and then the dust and debris. >> so much dust flying around in here. there's lead paint. stuff you don't want to breathe in and we have to wear the mask because we're not sure everything flying around in here. >> reporter: all of this happening just below the surface. >> it was a drawbridge and there's a counterwigt an enthe whole thing pivots on basically two big axles. okay? we don't know the structural integrity of the two big axles sitting there for almost 100 years rusting. >> reporter: jonathan jarvis is head of the national park service. is the bridge safe? >> the bridge is safe.

absolutely the bridge is safe. by what we have done to it which is move traffic to the center. >> reporter: the lane closures on the bridge indefinitely. eventually the middle section will have to be replaced a very big project. pedestrians and cyclists can use it with cars for now. big tour buss are supposed to stay off. back here now as traffic makes the way across the bridge tonight, now a lot of the traffic avoids this bridge may actually end up impacting you. where it's expected to go. that at 6:00. back the you. well we have new documents that shed some light on the final moments of a husband and wife killed in rockville and police caught the neighbor accused in their murders and went to alaska to get him. here's darcy spencer. >> reporter: according to charging documents, scott tom tomaszewski attacked the two with a knife.

he suffered 42 stab wounds. his wife eight. the assault in the rockville home continued into the kitchen where jody va lar do's body was found and the outdoor patio area where her husband's body was found. both discovered we their own daughter on mother's day. the state's attorney john mccarthy. >> i want to make sure that the court understood the strength of the case and the brutality of the killing. >> reporter: the documents say tomaszewski cut the scene on the home and crawled in. he confessed to police that there was aality case in the victim's bedroom. that's when he stabbed them both. the documents say tom skew ski spent time in the house an allegedly stole watches including a $7,300 rolex, cash and jewelry. he lated led police to the murder weapon. >> i think he's very much in shock. i think he is bewildered. >> reporter: the attorney read a statement from the parents.

he was arrested in alaska while on a vacation cruise wm to celebrate their retirement. >> the tomaszewski family is devastated by the death of their neighbors and the fact their son scott is charged with the commission of these crimes. >> reporter: coming up at 6:00 prosecutors say tomaszewski posted a message on the facebook page about the crimes. i'll tell you what he wrote coming up at 6:00. in rockville, darcy spencer, news 4. two more people are now facing charges in connection with a widespread drug operation in prince william county. news 4 brought you the exclusive video of the raid last week. isaiah boiling and victor stegli accused of distributing drugs in that county and among more than 20 charges in a police operation called "growing pains." they used the operation to crack down on young people abusing drugs like hallucigens

east and tracking it for you from the storm cent ir. >> thank you. a deadly shooting at a local park over the weekend and now police say they have got their man. >> saturday's shooting in the middle of the afternoon attardmore park in maryland. jeremy williams was killed after an escalation of an argument and gun fire. there's new information about the minutes just before shots rang out. >> reporter: police say 21-year-old alonzo lloyd admitted to shooting and killing 21-year-old jeremy williams. it happened yesterday around 2:30 in the afternoon at theardmore park in springdale. police say it started with an argument of some sort. >> a shooting stemmed from the argument where lloyd was shot. the victim who was shot who subsequently died and a second victim who was shot and remains in critical condition. >> reporter: it killed williams and injured lloyd. a third man who was shot was also involved in the argument and was driven to a business

park. a mile away from where the shooting happened and listed in critical condition. a fourth person who was an innocent bystander was grazed by a bullet. his friends say they were all throwing horseshoes and the gun fire rang out. >> we were facing the basketball court and all of a sudden i heard something go pop, pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: both the suspect and the victim lived near the park. the police say the two were in rival groups but are not calling them gang members or saying what sparked the deadly confrontation in a crowded park. >> the older guys playing horseshoes. younger guys playing basketball. kids enjoying themselves. everybody enjoying themselves. this makes no sense at all. >> reporter: this is the third homicide in as many weeks here. news 4 at 6:00 what the prince georges county police department and the local police there are doing about it. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. and not far from springdial no arrests in a murder of

glenarden over the weekend. police are offering a reward in that case. pierre edwards shot and killed off of bar low road. that shooting at around 5:00 on saturday afternoon and police say this is not a random incident. a d.c. police officer and another man are recovering after a shooting overnight in the detroit area. you can see the vehicle, the officer and his friend were riding in riddled with buttllets. police say it happened near a nightclub and investigators trying to figure out if it's connected to a dispute at the club or may have been an attempted carjacking. both victims in the case are expected to be okay. it's a landmark step in maryland. to help gain the public's trust and police misconduct investigations. today montgomery officials said they'll prosecute cases against officials accused of using deadly forces and howard county for montgomery county.

right now continuing to track the showers and storms around the region. a couple of them have turned severe with heavy rainfall. lightning, as well. strong gusty winds. storm 4 radar showing the activity. mostly to the east of d.c. now down to the south and back towards the west. even a couple of showers popping up around the metro region. this is the area of the heaviest storms. one severe thunderstorm making the way right towards front royal. warning until 5:45. this is for warren county and southern frederick countyiescounties. along 66 and then back in towards west virginia. we had a flash flood warning issued and not surprised to see a few more with this area. loudon county. montgomery county and then

another storm toward prince william county. this is the storm through d.c. about an hour ago and coming down here and coming across the crownville area to annapolis and then across the bridge and produce up to 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds. that's a warning for northern anne arundel county until 5:30 and then a couple more to south. this is right around the -- i'll zoom in a second and beach and if we did see another warning, it is charles county and northern st. mary's county and something to watch andms up here towards manassas. let's get them too. nope. i can't do it. alexandria and the one towards manassas right now. some very heavy rain there, too. storm team 4 radar showing a flash flood watch here in the green. the only counties not in it down towards st. mary's cown and king george county. doesn't mean you don't get extreme rain, as well. you could see some of that.

able to sleep since i found out about it. >> reporter: august 4th, 2014 73-year-old cecil brown was found dead in his backyard. it was ruled a case of murder. they say he'd been beaten to death. when police got to the scene, neighbors say his wife larlane was sitting alongside the house an saying over and over again, how could someone do something like this? how could someone do something like this? well now, maybe we know. according to court documents, obtained by news 4, the 68-year-old and alleged boyfriend 49-year-old conspired to kill cecil brown on that august afternoon. according to court documents, larlane brown did some extensive research on how to bring about death. searching topics like what

happens when you get tasered in the head? what drinks cause heart failure? and poisons that you can make at home. now you won't believe what they say mrs. brown did for her alleged boyfriend. well i've got the list right here. coming up at 6:00. now back to you. >> pat, thank you. a d.c. father goes on trial today charged with child abuse after a deadly crash that killed his 4-year-old son. police tell us charles smith was driving under the influence of pcp when he allegedly caused the cash here in cottage city in 2013. prosecutors say his suv jumped a curb hit two other vehicles before slamming into two utility poles and a brick retaining wall. smith's 4-year-old son was not wearing a seat belt and died after being thrown from that car. crash investigators say he was going between 71 and 88 miles

per hour during that crash. you may have seen this on facebook or twitter. a door wide open on a moving metro train yesterday on the red line. this video was shot by a rider. metro tells us everyone had to get off the train at the next stop dupont circle and then taken out of service. the transit agency has not said what caused the door to open mid ride. the rail car is a 4000 series car and that is considered the least reliable in the metro fleet. not again. for the third time in less than a week the washington monument is closed because of a power outage. the elevator isn't working and that means there are a lot of disappointed tourists in town right now. zachary keische taublged to them. >> there's a short in the electrical system. we have to find out where it is and get it repaired. >> reporter: hmm. interesting. short. not what typically comes to mind when most lay eye on the

alert on the nbc washington app to get updates all evening long. caitlyn, the word some celebrities say may have a good chance to actually break the internet. by now, you have probably seen "vanity fair's" new cover with caitlyn formerly bruce jenner. the twitter account reached a million followers just over four hours outpacing president obama last month. almost immediately, jenner's daughters took to social media to express their support. the celebs also posted their own well wishes. some including jerry o'connell and referenced kim car dash ynkardashian's breaking the internet saying caitlyn may do just that. comedian tracy morgan is speaking out for the first time since the deadly crash. it's been a year since a speeding walmart truck hit his limo killing his friend and

putting morgan in a coma for two weeks. chris lawrence is here with more of the emotional interview. chris? >> reporter: he can't remember the crash itself and he knows what it cost him. fans remember an animated morgan on "snl" and "30 rock" but he needed a cane today. coming out of the coma he found out his friend and fellow comedian james mcnair died in the crash and he says he lost it. he's thankful he asked his fiancee not to travel with him that night. >> my daughter was 10 months old. she wouldn't have made it. megan wouldn't have made it. and i don't know man. that's really the thing that just tears me up. >> he reached with a settlement with walmart last week. as for getting back on stage, he is getting there and promises there will come a day when he's going to make us all laugh again. jim? >> great the see him.

more than six weeks after a mary washington student's murder news 4 learns today police are looking for any threats made against her on social media. as northern virginia but owe chief julie carey reports, the focus is now on the popular social networking site y ikyak for the crime. >> reporter: speez swarntds reveal police want to know what steven vanderbreil or anyone else may have posted about grace mann. the student leader mann was killed in april. her house mate charged with the murder. news 4 is told she was given anonymous threats.

>> law enforcement is welcoming at the issue. >> reporter: one of the lawyers who joined students last month to announce the filing of a title 9 complaint against the university of mary washington. it alleges administrators didn't do enough to investigate the sex-based flets. it seems police were listening. they filed these search warrant affidavits to gain access to all of the social media accounts. twitter, facebook g-mail and yahoo mails and asking to scour yikyak posts that used these words, grace, mann feminist rape kill murder death, dead threat or tletenned. >> it's appropriate. there were threats. specifically made to grace mann and to other members of the feminist united on yikyak threatened with rape murder and other acts of violence. and it would be completely

of just showers for the most part and hiv vi should recalls over the d.c. metro area. st. mary's county really get ready here. i think you are really going to see very heavy rain over the next couple of hours into that area. take a couple of zooms for you. no longer any severe storms here. no warnings in this area. but extremely hef vin rain in frederick county virginia right along i-81 and 66. this storm in front royal moving closer from warren county. more storms developing just to the west of aldi and leesburg area off towards the east and not moving fast and then that storm in anne arundel is crossing and on the chesapeake and over annapolis right now and the eastern shore in the next half an hour to an hour. take a look at the fairfax county area. through d.c.. just some pop-up showers and any of the pop-up showers produce heavy rain. here's the one up towards 270.

we have a live camera up there right now. this is father hurley boulevard. you can see it. that rain coming down. the road definitely going to be on the wet side. so give yourself a little bit of extra time. people there you can see, some headlights on. others do not. if your wipers are on, the wiper headlights should be on too. clarksburg seeing the rain and that's the heavy bout there and then down 270 back down towards the district and where that area is down towards the south and right towards southeast. seeing some very heavy rain along pennsylvania avenue right on down 295, and then up towards langdon with that rain. back to the west back towards the tyson's corner area. and further west here right along the american legion bridge and big-time delays because of the rain earlier and now coming down again over the same area.

lawmakers are set to take action to protect people from having the utility turned off in extreme heat. news 4's mark segraves found out, only a handful of state pros vid this protection. >> we have it for freezing days but electricity can't be cut off and the idea is that then heat wave over 95 degrees, the heat index there's a greater risk to human life and, therefore, the electricity can't be cut off. >> reporter: the d.c. council expected to approve emergency legislation tomorrow to prohibit utility companies turning off any residents' electricity when the temperature is for 95 or hotter. this may, we have seven days of 90 degrees or above. a record for our area. while most states have laws prohibiting the shutoff of heat in the cold months only seven states have that same protection for residents during the hot months. in our area according to the u.s. department of health and human services the district restricts turn-off when it's 32

homes. this apartment complex north of dallas is under three feet of water. more than 100 units have water damage and half will need months of repair work. many had to be rescued from their homes as the water rose. >> started out in the parking lot and it just crept up to the apartments and it just took over like the swamp fingers. like this. >> all the water still preventing many residents from getting into the apartments to get clothes and belongings. a new hampshire farm owner is facing charges for a bounce house accident that happened on his property last year. two toddlers climbed into the bounce house in october and a gust of wind picked it up and tossed it 50 feet in the air injuring both children. it was just set up and not staked to the ground. the man faces three misdemeanor charges for not having it properly registered. there's a place to send

that's why we have the flash flood watch in effect until tomorrow morning. storm team 4 radar showing a huge area of very heavy rain in the west and the blue ridge and the south in through southern maryland and then a scattering of showers. back towards front royal area first over towards winchester heavy rain for the better course of an hour. that continues to move on towards the east. new storms developing in towards loudon and montgomery county. the severe weather in anne arundel is off towards to the eastern shower and mentioned around the metro area a storm here and a shower here and then bethesda and fairfax county. we'll continue to watch these move on through the region and the next few hours.
