out there. >> yeah. guys we'll continue to see this heavy rain right on through the rest of the evening areas. but the big deal not the wind although we have seen a few trees down and the rain and that's why we have the flash flood watch in effect until tomorrow morning. storm team 4 radar showing a huge area of very heavy rain in the west and the blue ridge and the south in through southern maryland and then a scattering of showers. back towards front royal area first over towards winchester heavy rain for the better course of an hour. that continues to move on towards the east. new storms developing in towards loudon and montgomery county. the severe weather in anne arundel is off towards to the eastern shower and mentioned around the metro area a storm here and a shower here and then bethesda and fairfax county. we'll continue to watch these move on through the region and the next few hours. including one right through

fairfax and burke. that is light to moderate rain right now and this is the area i want to focus on the over the next half an hour and could be a problem in through portions of southern maryland. living in charles county st. mary's county and prince georges county heads up. it's a rough next couple of hours. i'll keep you posted. >> all right. family members linked arm in arm following three flower-laden caskets up the stairs of a church. as the bell tolled for hundreds gathering to mourn. that was the scene outside as the community remembers the mother the father and the 10-year-old boy who were all killed along with their housekeeper housekeeper. meagan fitz jergerald is in northwest d.c. outside the home where they died. >> reporter: it was a mix of emotions. folks visibly distraught consoling each other and others in a state of shock.

wondering why, why anybody could kill this family. amy and savvas savopoulos were steadfast in the faith. loyal here at st. sophia's greek orthodox cathedral. their son baptized in the church ten years ago. this was what their friends called a second home. but on monday afternoon, the congregation was reminded that these three lives were called home to the lord. >> you die and you'll be reborn with christ. >> reporter: both friends and family say their funeral service was both emotional and spiritual for those who were there. >> it's a wonderful tribute to the family. >> for me it was beautiful. and the service was very beautiful. >> reporter: joel thomas went to high school with amy and salvevvos. >> their commitment to philanthropy their outpouring love to help people and i think

that was very moving. >> reporter: and the lives this family touched and the community they loved was very telling. hundreds of people who were there togood-bye. >> absolutely crushing. absolutely crushing. >> reporter: and there was a rather compelling moment in the service today when the reverend was speaking about 10-year-old phillip and sharing with you, he said quote, we have all been robbed of a lifetime of hope and dreams and our hearts are now broken. he also went on to talk about the last time he saw phillip in church with his mother. he described the 10-year-old as happy and hehe bright smile that he had. so it was certainly a tough day for a lot of folks but for some it offered a bit of closure. reporting in northwest, meagan fitzgerald news 4. >> there are still a lot of questions about the investigation into the murders. right now, daron wint is facing

first-degree murder and held without bond. investigators believe wint had help committing the crime but so far no one else has been arrested. wint is due back in court next month. the young congressional intern was arrested today. capitol police say he tried to carry a gun into a u.s. house office building. the gun was unloaded. there was a gun. i-team scott mcfarland broke the story and said it's the late nest a series of guns seized on u.s. capitol grounds. scott? >> reporter: good evening. the i-team's review of reports show 14 different people have been stopped illegally carrying guns along capitol grounds just since 2012. none involved a specific injury or threat. but in the 15th case two months ago, a man carrying a gun in front of the white house shot and killed himself. in today's case police say 25-year-old josh wheeler carried a 9-millimeter handgun to the security entrance on the new

jersey of the longworth u.s. house office building. miller was an intern for kansas republican congresswoman lin jenkins. she has her office in the longworth building. wheeler is now on temporary leave from his job. he'd only been there for three weeks. the i-team found several other revent handgun cases. two people separately tried to carry guns in the cannon house office building last year and pleaded guilty to a federal charge. the capitol police union official says officers are prepared to handle any gun incident and an agency spokeswoman says the 14 recent arrests are the by-product of their police work. wendy? >> all right. scott. the man who was charged in the brutal murder of his neighbors apparently offered condolences on facebook after the crime and that's what prosecutors just revealed about the deaths of richard and julie

ann valardo. >> reporter: after the murders of dick and jody valardo their neighbor scott tomaszewski posted a message on the facebook expressing sympathy saying they were such nice people and how scary to happen in the neighborhood. >> i read that as i said in open court for the judge to understand sort of the character of what we were dealing with. it was someone who was showing great sympathy for the family and was expressing surprise at what had happened. >> reporter: a week later, tomaszewski would be charged in the brutal murders while on a family vacation. according to charging documents, scott tomaszewski attacked the couple in their bed with a knife. prosecutors say dick suffered 42 stab wounds. his wife eight. >> i just wanted to make sure that the court understood the strength of our case and the brutality of the kiorter: the documents say tomaszewski who lives across the

street cut the screen on a window on the home and crawled in confessed there was an altercation in the victims' bedroom and stabbed them both. according to the charging documents, tomaszewski spent time within the home after the murders. they say he was searching for things to steal. he allegedly stole watches including a $7,300 rolex, cash and jewelry. tomaszewski read a statement. >> the family is devastated by the tragic deaths of the neighbors. and the fact that their son scott has been charged with the commission of these crimes. >> reporter: in rockville, darcy spencer, news 4. the white house says we are less safe today. while some libertarians say we're more free. national security agency stopped collecting all of our phone records at midnight last night. that's when the patriot act expired. congress is expected to pass a

replacement this week. the usa freedom act. under it the bulk collection o. phone data collection continues and the responsibility for storing the data with the phone companies, not government. meantime a ruling today in a case involving internet threats. the supreme court threw out a conviction of a man who spent 44 months in prison for posting about killing his estranged wife on facebook. his name is anthony alanis. he says the postings in the form of rap lyrics were therapeutic and not threatening. the high court agreed with an 8-1 vote. the high court ruled internet communications may only be considered criminal if the intent is taken into account. another entry in the already crowded field of republicans running for president. south carolina senator lynn si graham launched a bid in the hometown today and served in the senate since 2002. spent eight years in the house before that and retired from 30

years in the air force and he promised a strong national defense if he's elected. >> i have more experience with our national security than any other candidate in this race. that includes you, hillary. >> on the domestic front, graham pledged to take on issues of social security and medicare and he joins the contest as an underdog. he is one of 11 big names running for president on the republican side. but there could be as many as 18 candidates by the time the iowa caucus comes around next february. political annual itselves say the interest in the seat is being driven by history. only once since truman has a party held on to the white house for more than two terms and also this. experts say running for president can make a person famous rich or influential even if they lose. some good news for hundreds of people in loudon county. hundreds of students that is.

more than 200 s.a.t. answer sheets missing for a month have been found. a sealed box found at broadwon high school this morning in the mail room not far from where they were place afd the tests were taken last month. the tests are on the way to new jersey to be graded. college board fully anticipates the tests will be validated and it says students will not have to take those tests again. a love triangle ends in murder. now, the victim's wife is facing charges after some troubling evidence is found on her smartphone. i'm adam tuss at the memorial bridge. coming up we'll climb underneath the bridge and take aing loo at big problems. you are not going the like what you see. and we'll report about a difficult fight against brain cancer as condolences pour in for beau biden. i'm still tracking things out there on the radar right now. i'm continuing to track it.

i'm chris lawrence at the live december westbrook a developing story. we have just learned that the washington monument closed for a good chunk of the week. the national park service telling us the earliest it could reopen will be thursday. technicians have to get in there to repair what's being called a mechanical alignment issue. the elevator had problems over the past week. it's gone off, started up gone off, started up. and that's apparently caused the alignment issue with the elevator. the tourists a lot of folks to see it from the top, they buy their tickets for specific times

months in advance. when it closes they cannot reschedule you for a next day and a lot of folks missed out. last night, it broke again. and park officials had to escort someone down the stairs. so again, the news now, washington monument closed until thursday at the earliest. at the live desk i'm chris lawrence. and don't expect traffic to get any better if you travel on the memorial bridge. new look inside the beams shows that the steel is so thin you can nearly see through it. there's no end date set for lane closures. transportation reporter adam tuss tells us the repairs could make traffic worse for the other bridges. >> oh yeah. look at that. that beam is right in half. >> reporter: rusted support beams. columns and worn down buildings? nope. this is a bridge you might drive across every day. inside the memorial bridge. some steps you can't even step on right here. this is orange. can't step on the step.

not safe. they have marked them all off with the orange. >> no way to evaluate which part might fail. we look at the whole thing and know that structurally we need to keep heavy weight off of it. >> reporter: closures in place. tour buses not supposed to use the bridge until the fix is made. that means the 14th street bridge and roosevelt bridge pick up extra traffic. the memorial bridge is not as strong as it should be. becomes such a big issue that the u.s. transportation secretary came to talk about it. >> i've heard it said before that in america we're great at responding to the wolf at the door and sometimes don't respond as well to the termites in the basement. well tonight, the der mites are becoming the wolf. >> reporter: the lane closures remain indefinitely. eventually the middle section will be replaced. that's a very big project. is the bridge safe? >> absolutely. by what we have done to it which is move traffic to the center.

>> reporter: and back here now at the bridge. as the traffic makes its way tonight. now, pedestrians and cyclists and cars are allowed to use the bridge for now. but again, the lane closures are in place and tour bus vs to go some place else. you. >> all right. and we have more about the concerns of those inspectors that they found on memorial bridge and you can see those and what they're doing to fix it and download the nbc washington app. we have learned that the hammond middle school in alexandria closed again tomorrow. the classes are canceled today because the air conditioning wasn't working. we are told the problem will be fixed tomorrow and that the school is expected to reopen on wednesday. end of the year tests should not feel the impact from this because there were not any scheduled for today or tomorrow. wild weather out there. severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the region. doug and veronica here with a look at how much rain to be getting tonight. >> yeah.

that's the big thing here. we see an isolated severe thunderstorm warning pop up and just like fairfax county prince georges county. extremely south d.c. it's the flooding potential. >> exactly. the flood potential and what some of the storms lightning with them. big-time flood potential and how much rain to have by tomorrow morning and the impact on the area roads. >> radar right now. you can see just a big area of storminess toward the west the south. another area up around baltimore and brand new severe thunderstorm warning and just popped up here. really just started to strengthen. down here towards the mt. vernon area. here's storminess here from bethesda to the clareon the don area. here's mt. vernon and look at the lightning with this one. just flared up here. veronica veronica see if you can take it off of here for me and zoom in and show you exactly where it is. we're watching it move off

towards the north and east at a fairly good clip. this is a small storm, severe storm warning and does include fairfax county over towards national harbor. included in that. downtownalexandria. i'll zoom in. this is the gw parkway out of alexandria. here's the woodrow wilson bridge. you might just want to wait a little bit. that is strong storm continuing to make its way off to the north and east at 30 miles per hour. back to the east. more storminess and heavy rainy and front royal hammered with this rain. this rain is moving up and then really just hitting along the blue ridge here and expect to see the potential for flooding here and then the lees area. big-time storms there. there's the storminess to talk about there firing up around d.c. and then the south and even more so down towards southern maryland. portions of waldorf around the charles county area continuing

to see that. we have a lot more to go. look at the storm here. the little turn spin in the atmosphere. this's the upper low bringing up the moisture and the storms down to the south. very rainy night and talking about a lot of rain. veronica johnson is back with me now to talk about what to expect. >> you saw on the wide view there, converging on the same area. some areas are v had the heavy rain and getting more. we have the forecast to show you how much your neighborhood could get. look at that. even into d.c. over two inches possible. that's the areas in reds and purple there from gaithersburg into d.c. mo nsa sas and cull pupper. one to four inches. the impact on roads will be huge. late tonight, ponding and a flood potential. and by morning, just showers with wet roads. but we have got a long way to go. doug? >> a long way to go and a big change in the weather over the next couple of days. say good-bye to the 90s. tomorrow we'll struggle to reach 70 with more showers.

the trip home from work is probably going to be a lot smoother for some metro riders. this is what it looked like this morning. fire trucks ambulances surrounding the friendship metro station because of an insulator arking. red line trains had to single track in both directions for about an hour and to make delays worse, crews had to fix another arking insulator near the bethesda metro station. altogether those delays lasted about two hours. and how's this for an unsettling ride on metro? vird owe shows a moving train with a door wide open. this video shot by a rider

yesterday on the red line. metro tells us everyone had to get off that train at the next stop dupont circle. and then the train was taken out of service. the transit agency has not said what caused the door to open in the middle of this ride. this particular rail car is one of the 4000 series and that's considered the least reliable in the metro fleet. things can get difficult for thousands of people whose bikes are stolen. but tonight, the news 4 i-team showing you how to improve your chances of getting your bicycle back. our investigation revealed that they resell them in minutes and harder to track down. police say only a small fraction of local victims ever get to ride their own bike again. mayan holmes whose bike was stolen from his home never did get his back. >> didn't occur to me in a million years that somebody would break into -- break in and in retrospect probably takes a

lightning, too. some areas could be dealing with some severe flooding overnight. doug's got an eye on all this up in storm center 4. doug? >> really is going to be all night tonight and continuing to see the showers and storms developing. look at around down towards southern maryland big-time weather that way. blue ridge. right inside our region loudon county. until 6:45. montgomery county. fairfax county. and then look at this guy. a very strong storm. look at all of the lightning. this is right now on top of national harbor. down towards southeast and the nats park. nats game is post poenled now because of the inclement weather. look toward the capital and making the way right towards the capitol. look at that storm cloud covering over. a gust front there. see that opening wall of that rain making the way from right to left. very heavy rain there. we look back towards the storm back towards the reston area and

loudon county and see that very dark cloud into that region too. not quite to reston and going to miss this. take a look at the radar. you can see the storm making the way this way just north of reston and hit herndon and ashburn and raining hard on route 7. heads up in these locations. gaithersburg seeing more. nats game delayed. not postponed. delayed and not surprised to see more delays mentioning that on twitter. continuing to watch it from the storm center. well now to some new clues in a deadly love triangle. police say a woman bought her boyfriend a fancy new car and paid for hotel stays and now they're both charged in her husband's murder. she's being held on a $5 million bond. because of what police say they found on her smartphone. news 4's pat collins has our report. >> reporter: they were the centerpiece on colby avenue. he would repair neighbor's homes

for cost. she would organize the block parties. now he's dead. she's charged in the murder. there's a boyfriend in the picture and neighbors here they don't know what to make of it. >> i can't wrap my arms around it. we didn't see this coming. the neighborhood is devastated. we're speechless. >> reporter: august 4, 2014. 73-year-old cecil brown found dead in the backyard of his home on colby avenue. it was ruled a case of murder. they say he had been beaten to death. now, ten months later, his wife 68-year-old larlane brown and her alleged boyfriend 49-year-old hussein allah zeday charged with conspireing to kill cecil brown on that august day. >> none of us could understand really what happened. very surprising. >> reporter: according to court documents, larlane brown did some extensive research on how to bring about death.

searching topics like what happens if you get tasered in the head? what drinks cause heart failure? and poisons that you can make at home. according to court documents, mrs. brown bought her alleged boyfriend a jaguar car and 30 times picked up the tab at a nearby motel. they say she also made him the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. today, i talked to cecil brown jr. he said i love my mother. i love my father. i'm doing my best just to work my way through this. now back to you. >> thanks pat. police in fredericksburg are broadening their investigation into the death of a university of mary washington student. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey discovered

investigators looking at threats of a controversial social media app. >> reporter: these search warrants show fredericksburg police investigating whether there is any connection between a university of mary washington student's death and threatening posts on the anonymous social media site yikyak. he was killed in april. a house mate is charged with the murder. police want to afound if anyone else might have made tlets against mann on the site. >> i'm pleased that law enforcement is looking at this issue. >> reporter: deborah catz is a lawyer joining students last month to announce the filing of a title ix complaint against the university. it alleges add myministrators didn't do enough to investigate threats. it seems police were listening. shortly after the news conference they filed the search warrant affidavits to gain access to alm of the suspect's social media accounts twitter, facebook g-mail and

yahoo mail and asking to scour yik yak posts from the university of mary washington zip code with words like grace, mann feminist rape kill and murder. >> it would be completely appropriate to run that down. and to see whether the person who's been arrested had been making the threats. >> reporter: she hopes even if police discover that the suspect never posted threats on yikyak they'll try to track down others they find that might have. >> our view is when you threaten someone with murder or rape whether it was grace mann or anyone else these are criminal violations and should be prosecuted. >> reporter: the suspect is due in court june 16th for a preliminary hearing n. fredericksburg virginia julie carey, news 4. take a look at the rain coming down at the capitol right now. continuing to make the through portions of the d.c. area. severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 7:00 here. we have seen lightning with this

condolencesu biden tonight, the vice president's eldest son passed away over the weekend at walter reed army medical center surrounded by his family. he was 46 years old. doctors diagnosed him with brain kanser in 2013 and the cancer returned this spring. no funeral plans released by the white house set up a memorial page for message to the biden family. brain cancer is more common in adults than many of us realize. and as chris lawrence reports now, there's not been much progress in the way we treat it. chris? >> reporter: unfortunately not, this year alone nearly 15,000 americans will die from brain cancer. if you have a tumor, the survival rate is 35%. but beau biden's death raising

awareness and new calls for an end to this devastating disease. 34-year-old ben fishman wearing this hat every day so no one can see the scars. >> i couldn't imagine i would be in this place a year ago. >> reporter: that's because those scars are one of the last reminders of the battle with brain cancer. doctors found a grade 4 tumor last year after suffering from dizziness, problems with speech and trouble moving his arm. >> i just wanted to survive at that point. and that was the -- that was the issue. >> reporter: doctors say the most common symptom is a headache presented in the morning. numbness goes along with it and seizures. survival and treatment depends on how aggressive the tumor is. those slowing growing can be cured with surgery. for those like ben diagnosed with serious tumors surgery, chemotherapy and radiation aren't always enough. >> grade 4, the fastest growing

and median survival is 12 to 18 months and patients do differently. >> of course we went into this thinking it will be okay. >> reporter: james and janet wood are too familiar with the woods. their son jimmy as his family called him died two years ago. he was diagnosed with a grade 4 brain tumor and eventually died from a stroke. a side effect of his treatment. when they heard the news at beau biden this weekend, their hearts went out to the vice president and his family. >> we know exactly what they've been through. and whether you lose a child, as they have and as we have there's no greater hurt than to lose a child. >> reporter: the woods say they believe they need to keep talking about their son to raise awareness and hope doctors can one day find a cure. >> our son, they had nothing to save him then. except our prayers. but we can save someone else. we will speak of him.

we will speak of his disease. until we can maybe save people who have a chance now. >> there's no screening for it either like there is for other cancers affecting the breasts or colon. doctors are trying to develop a test to find out who's more likely to develop tumors and that's still years away. we posted a lot more on the app, including a look at how many tumors develop into cancer. once again, really coming down right down in through portions of the district and the capitol. you can't see the capitol right now coming down so heavy in the region. new thunderstorm warning with more of montgomery county and gaithersburg and rockville. that until 7:15 tonight. the two big storms right around d.c. and prince georges county and northern fairfax county and herndon and montgomery and county and watching it for you from the storm center.

sunday afternoon at the park turned out to be the last outing for jeremy williams. he was shot yesterday in springdale maryland and while police made a quick arrest his murder and two others in surrounding communities have people there on edge. prince george county bureau chief tracee wilkins with a report on the recent violence there. >> over the past want to say three weeks there's been three violent incidents in and around glenarden. very unusual. >> reporter: rupert samuels found shot to death at reed street. the homicide was reported as a car accident and once on the scene police discovered the body inside the vehicle. past saturday 22-year-old edwards of northeast d.c. found shot outside of the 2800 block of horn beam court and then yesterday on the border of glenardon and springdale a quadruple shooting that left a

man dead and two injured. it happened at an exchange of gun fire in a crowded park. police say the 21-year-old alonzo lloyd admitted to the shooting and now in custody. too close for comfort football people living in the small city of glenarden. >> i spent several hours with the chief and the command staff of the police and put together a plan about how we're going to patrol glenarden and the surrounding areas. >> reporter: it was the second safest city in the state of maryland last year. the chief said he's determined to get the title back. >> there's additional officers patrolling and doing that for the near future. >> reporter: the chief says he doesn't believe the shootings are connected and all of this happened around the same time. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. oh my goodness. there is some wild and sometimes even violent weather out there.

doug and veronica upstairs i understand flash flooding around as well? >> that's the flood threat tomorrow morning and seeing extremely heavy rain coming down right now no and around the d.c. metro area. and the end of day rush. >> the big impact on area roads, for sure. looking at the nbc washington app which does include traffic if you go into that and seeing a lot of red which is never a good thing during this time of day. meanwhile, take a look at the traffic cam. 495 south of tyson's. we are talking about all of this rain on top of areas already gotten pounded with a lot of rain. will lead to likely flooding throughout the areas moving over from severe thunderstorm to flash flood warnings and big impact not just now for the evening rush and right through the overnight. traffic moving slowly with reduced visibility and rainfall rates over an inch an hour. doug? >> we are tracking the traffic

from springfield all the way around the beltway and it's a mess. here's this one right through portions of d.c. really the eastern half of d.c. northeast, southeast, right around capitol hill. all seeing extremely heavy rain right now. the severe thunderstorm warning going until 7:15 or 7:00. you can see all of the lightning with this up towards college park. and then right on down towards nats park which game has been delayed at least for now and then as we take away the lightning, notice this. riverdale. seeing some of that. right along 50. follow 50 out and look at the rain associated with that here too. it's not moving very fast. that's why we can see some flooding. look at this storm. this storm is just a monster storm. making the way in through prince georges county, the herndon area. watch all the lightning here. i did a little quarry on the lightning. upwards of 45 strikes in 5 to 10 minutes. heads up.
