y rain. security failure, the fall out after a damaging internal grags uncovered some serious lapses with the tsa. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kiereinen helping you to prepare for the day ahead. >> we can all exhale that pounding down pour we had yesterday is long gone. a couple of hours ago, we did have one band of moderate showers coming through, but they are out in the eastern shore. from hagerstown to martinsburg and west of there into the mountains getting a few lying showers. these running going to be passing well north of the metro area. roads are drying out a little bit. temperatures are cool this morning, we're in the 60s to just near 70. it's only near 60 far north and west. have an umbrella today. late afternoon and evening is

when we'll get a few more showers coming on through. bus stop forecast next weather and traffic on the 1s. it was a terrifying ride for people taking this metrobus in the district. take a look a tree came crashing down this is just west of mcpherson square. it happened during the evening rush yesterday, it happened as the rain started to come down hard. people nearby said the rain and win came out of nowhere and they heard a crash. passengers were on the bus, when that tree cull came down but thankfully nobody was hurt. all of the passengers were able to get out of the bus through the back door. now, let's check in with melissa monthly -- mollet. >> outer loop at georgetown road we have the two lanes blocked. kind of ebbs and throws there. you can see in flow downs at the

bottom of the spur. taking a look at prince george's coin right now starting to see some volume and typical slowdowns here headed on indian head highway. same thing here. taking a look at 95, bw parkway, everything looking pretty good. 270 at shady grove road northbound southbound no major issues. back with travel times in ten minutes. 6:02 today, a man accused of making threats against the metro system heads back to court. he's responsible for a string of threats dating back to last december. the charges include attempt to make terrorist threats. he appeared on a reality tv show last year. he pretended to be a well-known rapper to gain money from a fan on line. if coleman is convicted, he faces 20 years in prison.

the agency in charge of your security at airports across the country is under fire this morning. a new report reveals that the tsa screeners failed to test -- failed a test to detect weapons and explosives and now the acting head of that agency is no longer in charge. news 4 megan mcgrath is live with more on the scary statistics here. >> reporter: security checkpoints like the one you see behind me at reagan national airport, the assumption is all of these checks keep dangerous things off of airplanes and now comes an alarming statistic. the screeners failed to find fake bombs and weapons 95% of the time during spot under cover checks by teams from homeland security. the tsa's acting administrator has been reassigned and major changes have been ordered. now, during the investigation, agents smuggled a variety of mock contraband past security including fake explosives and weapons. investigators slipped the

dangerous items past airport screeners in 67 of 70 tests. that's a 95% failure rate. now, nbc news reports that in one case an alarm sounded and the screener did a patdown of the agent and still did not find a fake plastic explosive taped to that agent's back. we've been talking to passengers here at reagan national airport and they find it all very disturbing. >> i actually got through a corkscrew at one time and i was shocked they didn't find it because that wasn't allowed either. >> it definitely scares with me that they will let something like that through, 95% of the time. especially in the nation's capital. >> these under cover spot-checks have been going on for 13 years. tsa has been ordered to revamp procedures and training. back to you in the studio. a man in montgomery county is recovering in the hospital right now. he is accused of killing his girlfriend outside of a target

in germantown. montgomery county detectives believe the man shot the woman as part of a domestic issue. it happened in the parking lot right outside the target on north frederick road. police chased down a ford pick up miles away on darnstown road. the man is in the hospital right now. county police shut down dangerfield road in clinton last night. they say a man on a motorcycle drove on that road on at openly lane. he later died. i'm kristen wright at the live desk where we are getting in new pictures of a rescue from a capsized cruise ships in china. rescue teams were able to get to a 65-year-old woman. there she is there. they were able to pull her from the water, put her on to a stretcher and on to a boat and

bring her safely to shore. the effort continues to find more survivors. we see rescue teams on a vessel there. they are on the hull of the ship trying to listen for any signs of life and listen for any other survivors. they think that there may be people trapped there in that hull. the ship capsize ds in the yangtze river in bad weather. it may have been a cyclone. 458 people are on board. five are confirmed dead. 14 rescued. they are working in poor weather conditions now to find more survivors. lawmakers are grilling amtrak's president on capitol hill today. they will be asking him about the deadly train derailment in philadelphia last month. follow us to find out what amtrak has to say at this hearing. eight people died when the northeast regional train went off the tracks.

a young boy is recovering this morning after this terrifying accident in new york city. we have to warn you this is graphic. you can see right there, the boy he was just walking yesterday when that car just barrels on to the sidewalk and drives right over him. people in the area immediately called police. they even tried to lift the car off of the little boy. the fire department eventually came and got him from underneath that car and the boy is expected to be okay. it's still not clear though what caused the driver to lose control. what we do know is charges have not been filed. coming up on 17 after the

hour. today, we'll learn more about takata's defective airbags. the company's vice president will be at a hearing on capitol hill this morning. 34 million afer bag were recalled. we're learning one possible cause of the problem. they plan to replace a chemical propellant in the airbag. some scientists believe ammonium nitrate becomes unstable over time. so farm it's not confirmed that it's to blame. social media is being scoured to find out more about a murder case. officers charged him with killing a student a few months ago. they have gained access to his google mail accounts. they are searching the app yik

yak for words like grace, rape, and murder. a fair cox county -- fairfax county attorney will keep her job amid reports of how they handled a police investigation. she was criticized for the way she carried out the investigation in the shooting of john gear in 2013. a friend of the convicted boston bomber is being sentencedutors say he removed things from dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room when he recognized his friend during the manhunt. police people were killed during the bombing. sudden death of a dog after he got groomed at petco. he was taken to the store right

outside of the friday. hours later he died of an apparent heat stroke. the vet told the owner he was likely put in a drier too long. the groomers were suspended. another world cup soccer executive is out of a job at least temporarily. fifa suspended the general secretary of the division that runs games in north and south america. he's not allowed anywhere near soccer-related events. the ethic committee said it booted him over news of a corruption investigation. two officials from the congo have also been suspended. you can get a free skin cancer screening. it will be happen at the rayburn house office building in the

gold room. it is from 11:00 until 1:00. one in five americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. a new study says you should stand for two hours a day while you were at work. they recommend as much as four hours of standing while on the job. the researchers say employers could accomplish that by letting workers take walks or providing standing desks. transgender activists are applauding caitlyn jenner this morning. she made her debut on the cover of "vanity fair" yesterday. espn anoubsed it will honor jenner with the aurthur ashe award during this year's espys.

falls church, the district right around 70 degrees. there's the capitol under low dark clouds now. staying cloudy through the morning and noontime. we'll hold steady in the 60s to where we are now. up to 70 by the early afternoon. a lot of clouds late afternoon. showers moving on through and into tomorrow morning and another cool day tomorrow with a greater chance of showers off and on from the morning into the afternoon and evening. highs only upper 60s. then on thursday, partly sunny the mid 70s. might get a passing shower mainly in the afternoon, could get some afternoon showers on friday with afternoon downpours. weekend we'll have highs reaching the low 80s maybe saturday and sunday. sunday is looking like the dry day for the weekend. maybe a shower late sunday night into early monday morning.

right now a d.c. landmark is off limits to visitors. we've learn the washington monument will remain closed for a few more days. the problems that are keeping people from enjoying the view from inside. the heavy rain that may have kept you up overnight is now pushing its way out of the d.c. area this morning, but there's always a but, we're going to get a brief break from those showers. >> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kiereinen is here. >> this new model just coming in showing brand new timing on rain moving through, as you just showed on the storm team 4 radar, most of the area is gradually drying out temporarily after we had one wave of moderate rain moving through. we're still getting a few light sprinkles, between 70 and hagerstown, west of there and into the mountains. this will pass north of the metro areas where the roads are

drying out. the roads are drying a bit. going forward into the rest of the morning, these patches of green, you might get a few scattered sprinkles this morning. it's later in the day hour by hour, by 2:00 p.m., a line of showers into southern maryland and south of there, fredericksburg to charlottesville, some of shows thundershowers coming through, but they are not going to be nearly as heavy as they were yesterday, but enough to make the afternoon commute and the evening commute wet if you are going to be out tonight you will be running in those showers through the evening hours. we've already had problems with some standing water this morning and now you've got problems on 270. what's going on with that? >> we have delays right now. this just popped out. as you are headed out the frederick , pretty slow all the way southbound as we zoom down 270 here. we're either yellow or red. it's just volume. nothing actually happening. just a little bit nasty this

morning. wide look at things. prince george's county inbound indian head highway, 12 miles an hour. sousa bridge, we are still blocked here. that ramp is blocked because of some flooding there and bw parkway southbound of the parkway have a disabled vehicle. a live look right now. that's the washington monday yum hard to see through all the haze right there. a look at the outside it's all you can see today as it remains closed. tourists will have to wait until thursday for the monument to reopen. derek is at the monday yum this morning. >> it is those pesky elevators. if you take a look at the washington monument this morning, as you expect with the overcast day we're having, very top shrouded in mist. you won't be able to tell the difference until thursday.

during the earthquake in august 2011, the monument was shut down for nearly three years so they could do $15 million in repairs to damage done by the earthquake and that included some work on the elevators. when the elevators and the monument reopened, you had some issues with those he willelevateors again, doors not opening or closing and stranding passengers. that has been addressed and problems seem to have subsided until late last week until you had some intimatementermittent power outages. they shut it down until thursday. technicians are there trying to get to the heart of that problem. it will reopen thursday at least accordingly to plans and there have been calls early on at least last year to replace the elevator system altogether. that's been resisted and they think they can fix this. wait till thursday and get that

spectacular view once more. live at the washington monument, derek ward, news 4. 6:35rk the head of the irs heads to capitol hill to answer questions about a big data breach. investigators say hackers stole the personal information of thousands of taxpayers from an irs website. recently government watchdog group said they warned the agency about security flaws in the computer system. budget cuts hampered efforts to upgrade the system. the senate could vote on a bill to phase out nsa data collection over time. phone companies would hold that data inside. however, the nsa would still be able to search your phone records. senator rand paul says the reforms in this bill don't go far enough. paul forced a suspension of the nsa data programs earlier this week by blocking a vote. it appears he won't be able to block this new bill. an office in maryland is

receiving thousands of dollars in brand-new riot gear. the sheriff said the unrest in baltimore wanted him to prepare for unrest. they bought more thads 68,000 worth of emergency gear. the man charged with murdering his murders in rockville, prosecutors say scott tomaszewski posted that the vilardos were nice people and it was scary that they were killed in their neighborhood. they were stabbed more than 50 times. documents also say the suspect spent time in the house after the murders looking for things to steal. a damaging new report highlights serious lapses that could put you at risk. the action being taken to try and change the tsa. part of a bridge in the district right now shut down. we'll have detail coming up in a

emergency repairs are under way at the arlington memorial bridge. we took a look inside. we're going to show it to you right here. the steel beams are supposed to be 3/4 of an inch thick. because of corrosion those beams are paper thin and riddled with holes. tour buses are banned as well. the entire middle section of the memorial bridge will be replaced. you may soon pass a self driving car on the roads of virginia.

that road and later died. police are trying to figure out what caused the crash. happening now, the search for survivors from a capsized cruise ship in china. rescue teams right now are mobilizing. they are looking for any signs of life or anyone who may be trapped. the cruise ship sank in the yank zee river. it may have been a cyclone. five are confirmed dead. rescuers to make matters worse are working in poor weather conditions right now. today, catholic university will unveil the winning design for the altar pope francis will use when he visits in december. 18 teams entered this contest. they are for pope francis' outdoor mass. talk about the weather. it looks like we need to keep the umbrella around. >> yeah, but no more pounding

capital camera this morning. they are producing a few sprinkles this morning. a greater chance of rain coming in again is not going to be until late afternoon and evening hours. most of the day, we'll kind of flat line in the upper 60s throughout the day. then this evening gets a little bit cooler with a northeast wind all the way down around to 60 tomorrow morning. during the day on wednesday highs only in the upper 60s. average time is 81. maybe a shower in the morning but a greater chance of midday and afternoon showers on wednesday. then a chance of a passing shower thursday mainly in the afternoon, mid 70s, up and rather humid up near 80 on friday with a scattered thunderstorm. sunday looking dry. it looks like the best day of the weekend for outdoor activities. melissa has breaking news on the roads now. breaking news on northwest washington. take a look at this massive tree that is down right now. this is across massachusetts avenue right there at 13th. you are going to want to take 11th or 14th to get around this one.

going to be there for a while and start causing some real problems. eastern avenue at minnesota flooding. new report a pedestrian struck blue ridge avenue at amherst in silver springs. westbound, sousa bridge, still have that ramp blocked. a wide look at thks we're quite slow everywhere. looking pretty typical. slowest spot right there. prince george's county rolling along as we always do on an average tuesday. 270 the entire stretch from frederick down to the spur is overall pretty darn slow at this point this morning. on capitol hill this morning, we'll learn more about amtrak's deadly train crash in philadelphia. amtrak's president and the ntsb will testify in front of lawmakers this morning. they are going to talk about a safety measure that was not in place when the train sped off the tracks last month.
