mar marlboro. . derek ward live at the school. what happens going on? >> reporter: they're in the midst of an investigation, led by prince georges county police and school officials, after this incident. we are have learned two students taken to the hospital. one of the thing police are looking at, surveillance video inside the school. take a look cell phone video shot at 7:40 this morning. we're told that this fight might have started in the stairway and escalated into a hallway. we are told initially two students are involved could be more that will be borne out by the investigation. more details from a spokesperson from the prince georges county police department and a student. >> there was a fight between two students. during the fight, one of the students produced a knife and stabbed the other, the victim. the victim's injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

the suspect is in custody. >> everybody was started going crazy in the hallways because like in the morning, my teacher went out the doorway, because everybody's going crazy, and she's like what's going on? >> reporter: what do you mean going crazy? >> just like going in the hallway, chaotic, yeah. >> reporter: we're told that the student who was more seriously wounded received a wound to the chest, possibly to left chest. we heard he's expected to survive. the weapon we're told pocketknife. we don't have any more detailed description of than the school does not, i don't think anybody has magnetometers. they have school resource officers. all of the people will be folded into the incident. neither of the people identified yet. derek ward, news4. developing now, at least five flights across the country were targeted by bomb threats. a passenger posted this video here to instagram from a flight

in philadelphia. us airways flight 648 from san diego, landed safely in philly after someone phoned in a threat warning of explosives on board. the 88 passengers and 5 crew were held on the taxiway while canines and a bomb squad searched for explosives. nothing was found. again, at least five flights were targeted today. the threats have not affected airports in the d.c. area. the flights originated in california portland oregon and seoul, korea. government sources tell nbc news threats are not credible. they are similar to chemical weapon threats against aircraft just last week. this downed tree could have caused big problems for your morning commute. one point during the morning rush massachusetts avenue closed between 12th and 13th streets in northwest. the massive tree came down overnight, blocking traffic in both directions. as you can see, the mess has

24. her boyfriend donald bricker jr. shot her. they arrested bricker after chasing his truck down darnstown road. bricker crashed his car. he's recovering in the hospital now. in prince georges county a man died in a motorcycle. he died, police have not told us the man's name yet. they say they are working to figure out what caused that crash. right now, congress is demanding answers about the deadly amtrak derailment last month. looking at house's transportation committee hearing going on now. amtrak's president and the ntsb both testifying there. news4 transportation reporter is there following everything going on. a few minutes ago, the ntsb released itsreport. it says investigators are still trying to nail down what caused the derailment. a northeast regional train spaeded

new details on a bizarre shooting that left one person dead and shut down i-295 for hours. this happened thursday at the height of rush hour. this morning, we're learning more about where the shooters may have met their victims and how they wouldn't up in the district. news4's megan mcgrath live at headquarters and talked to police chief kathy leneer. >> reporter: in the days following that shooting police have been piecing taking witness accounts and they have a much better time line for what happened. that time line begins with a

dispute between the victims and several men in another car along the gw parkway. if you saw something strange right around 8:40 in the morning on the gw parkway, last thursday police want to hear from you. it ended in a hail of gunfire on 295 during the height of rush hour last thursday. pedro alvarado was killed, his brother-in-law seriously wounded new information helped investigators tighten up the time line they are looking for eyewitness accounts of an altercation that happened before the shooting. altercation that happened in virginia. >> a lot of people out there. very good callers that called in but we need additional information. >> reporter: pedro and his brother-in-law left alexandria at 8:30 thursday morning, just a few minutes late around 8:40 they got into some kind of altercation with people in another car at the gw parkway and tulane drive. alvarado continued to drive on to 295 into the district.

around 8:50 a.m. near exit 1, the suspect's car came up alongside the suv and someone in the backseat opened fire. police chief says investigators need to learn more about that very first encounter. >> all of the calls and all of the information we got originally came from the d.c. side. what we're looking for now, we know there's this other confrontation, it should have been visible to other drivers maybe one of the drivers has more detail we're looking for 8:30 8:45 that morning. >> reporter: more information about that suspect's car. it is described as either a black or dark green toyota camry or perhaps honda. at least three men in the backseat plus the driver. anyone with information, you're asked to call police. they are still have a lot of questions, a lot of unknown factors, especially with piece of the altercation in virginia. they really want witnesses to

come forward. back to you all in the studio. >> thank you. right now, the cleanup is under way following severe weather that moved through the region overnight. several drivers got stuck in standing water at eastern avenue and minnesota avenue in northeast d.c. this was the scene this morning. two drives got stuck under the bridge. we spoke with one of the drivers who waited for help. >> a truck stopped at the light, and the water just is like -- it's like came in like a flood. i got caught in one end, he got caught in the other end. we stayed for like two hours. the police came the fire department they escorted me out. >> of course police always remain us if you see high water, turn around don't drown. fema checking ow damage in houston. after record flooding hit the region. homeowners hoping they're going to get some financial relief to rebuild their homes, but they have no idea how much will be

chesapeake bay. limited amounts of sunshine and cooler as well. we'll stay in the mid-60s today and tomorrow and barely make 70 on thursday. lots of clouds. not much of a warm-up. we're watching the senate today as early as this afternoon, lawmakers could vote on a bill to phase out nsa data collection. that means the nsa will stop storing your phone records, phone companies would hold the data. however, the nsa would be able to search your phone records. senator rand paul says reforms in this bill don't go far enough. paul forced suspension of the nsa data programs earlier this week by blocking a vote. it appears he won't be able to block this new bill though. get ready to hit the brakes when driving through the district tomorrow. starting midnight if you're caught speeding past any of the new cameras, you will get a ticket in the mail. we have posted location of five cameras, five in our nbc washington app. since january 2014 66 speed

they found tsa checkpoint screeners failed to detect mock ex-pleasives weapons and contraband in an overwhelming majority of tests carried out by undercover agents. tests conducted by homeland security red teams, charged with probing tsa checkpoints nation wind nbc news confirmed, tsa screening officers failed to detect smuggled weapons in 67 out of 70 attempts 95% failure rate. in one case alarm sounded on a magnetometer even during a pat-down the screening officer failed to find a fake explosive taped to an undercover agent's back. a talked to john pistol monday. >> any failures are a kerp, are the officers resolving alarms when the technology does detect them? >> reporter: jeh johnson says additional results are

classified but the tsa directed to conduct training for all of its officers in airports nationwide as well as intensive training for supervisory personnel. >> i think what this suggests is that the system's in need of serious analysis to determine what the problem is. >> reporter: tom costello, nbc news, washington. right now, amtrak is facing tough questions on capitol hill. the house transportation committee wants to know why amtrak didn't move faster in installing speed safety measures. the ntsb says could have prevented last month's deadly train derailment. amtrak's president promised the safety system positive train control, ptc, will be in place along the tracks throughout the northeast corridor as soon as possible. >> i promise you that by the end of this year this system, which will dramatically enhance safety, will be complete and operational on the nec. >> the ntsb released its

right now, the senate is wrestling over the future of the law the nsa used to justify collecting your phone data. within hours we could see a final vote. nbc's tracie potts reports on what this will ultimately cost you. >> the nsa could no longer say, send us all of your phone records. >> reporter: today, the senate may take a final vote on allowing the nsa to hold the records for six months before phone companies take over. some want to double that to a year and require phone companies to notify the government if they plan to store records for less than 18 months. >> my concern is they're going to compete with each other to say, who can hold it the shortest. >> reporter: the house is unlikely to approve any changes. the white house is frustrated. >> they've had a year and a half

captain abandon ship? nbc's bill neely has more on that. >> reporter: the search for survivors is a desperate one. rescuers hamminger to try to make contact with passengers strapped inside. time is running out on the yangtze river where the ship with more than 450 on board sank in rough weather. some people have been rescued. this 65-year-old woman was pulled out by divers. a few managed to swim ashore. but after a day of searching, hope is fading for so many more on the eastern star which was carrying 406 chinese tourists 5 guides and at least 47 crew. china's official news agency says the ship's captain and chief engineer are among the survivors. both are now in police custody. reports say the cruise ship sank in less than two minutes, no distress call was sent. chinese leaders have rushed to the scene, thousands of police
