injuries. and two of those five were two people taken to the hospital with serious injuries. so the fire started at about 2:30 this morning. look here, the fire is out. firefighters still here because it was a pretty big fire. it's a three-story row home. if you can see inside there, it is gutted. again, started early this morning. early on in the investigation, too early to say what might have started the fire. at this point. but yes, some really tragic developments in just the past little while as we have learned that two people are dead from this fire. and another five people hurt. three of the five firefighters, two of them people we presume that were inside of the row home with serious injuries. so that's the latest here on riggs place in northwest. some road closures to talk about because of the situation here. so i'm going to toss it back to

work. >> good morning. a few scattered light sprinkles on storm team 4 radar. little patches of green in washington in through central fairfax county. a few sprinkles in prince william and fauquier. elsewhere, drizzle falling. radar has a real problem picking up the tiny drizzle drops but we are getting a few of those. the low clouds are passing over under these clouds. in the mid 50s much of the region. little bit of a northeast breeze. these gray skies are not going to clear up but put on a happy face anyway. a live view from the city camera. for the morning commute, midday driving, afternoon caution lights because we'll likely have some damp pavement, wet pavement around because of these areas of patchy drizzle. we'll be hovering in the upper 50s. getting back home from work and school, should be in the mid 60s later this afternoon. your walk to work forecast

coming up at 6:11. >> thank you. it's now 6:03. today we'll learn how a family plans to take legal action after a d.c. firefighter refused to help a man who collapsed outside of a firehouse. medric mills suffered a heart attack and despite repeated attempts to get help they say firefighters across the street at engine 26 did not respond. today, mills' family is holding a news conference to announce the next steps. also today, you can take part in a special vigil to honor a reporter who was killed in d.c. charlize milton wrote for the hill rag and east of the river newspapers. she died in a shoot-out last week. milton was an innocent bystander there and one of the co-workers told us how much she cared about the community. >> she told the stories of the meetings that a lot of us don't want to go to. stuff that it's very important.

>> the colleague organized tonight's silent vigil. the washington seniors wellness center at 7:30. off the coast of china right now a big crane is being brought in and rescuers are going to try to cut through that capsized ship as they try to rescue more than 400 people who were still missing. 170 divers joined the search this morning. this as new numbers come in. 19 are confirmed dead. some yelling was reportedly heard from the overturned hull. many of the passengers we know were elderly tourists. this could turn out to be the deadliest sea disaster china has seen in decades. eun? >> angie goff thank you. it's now 6:05. a former d.c. news anchor is expected to announce see cease running for congress -- she's running for congress in maryland. kathleen matthews has a major announcement planned in silver spring. you may know her as the wife of another familiar face. she's married to msnbc's chris

matthews. she has served as a fellow at harvard's kennedy school of government. virginia's working hard to bring d.c. united to loudoun county. our news partner wtop reports the team is considering that move. that's after d.c. announced plans to build a brand new soccer stadium in the district but that deal is not final. "the washington post" reports they toured possible locations in loudoun county in recent weeks. that includes a site near the planned route 606 metro station. virginia says a stadium there would cost millions less and the stadium would reportedly be ready for the team's 2017 season. now, the team reached a deal earlier this year to play at a stadium at buzzard point. those are the renderings you saw there. however, many of the teams' fans live in northern virginia. right now, five new speed tickets are issuing tickets to violators. you'll want to slow down. a map is showing you where the new cameras are. one is along pennsylvania avenue

the ballot this november for loudoun county sheriff. steve simpson officially announced he eel run for sheriff again. this time as an independent. simpson announced the candidacy yesterday. he first became the county sheriff in 1996 but was unseated by mike chapman in 2011. keeping the community safe and balancing the sheriff's office budget would be the top priorities. . it's been a valuable training tool for many firefighters and today, for the last time firefighters will light up the so-called bank building at bowie marketplace for a live fire training exercise. that training starts at 11:00 this morning an will go until 3:00 this afternoon. four different training exercise exercises will last about 45 minutes each. you'll have a cooler commute morning. i mean the temperature. let's check your forecast for today. >> storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is at the greenbelt metro station. seeing a lot of commuters with umbrellas this morning, chuck? >> well, i have my umbrella for

news4's kristin wright is on the scene gathering information. you see the d.c. police and the atf are on the scene here. kristin will have a live report in the next hour. the search is on for a suspect who gave butt injections to a woman who later died. kelly mayhew travelled to queens, new york, to enlarge her butt. she posed for pictures on facebook and she died last saturday. "the new york daily news" reports a woman gave her silicone injections. kelly then had trouble breathing. her mother was with her at the time and gave her help. dr. rondi walker is a board certified plastic surgeon. she says some people choose black market plastic surgery because it's cheaper. >> just because someone addresses it as less expenseive it may not be the real thing. it's important to go to someone board certified. >> mayhew worked at b.e.t.

there was a similar case in prince george's county. a grand jury indicted vinnie taylor for murder back in february. police say he met a woman at a hotel room and gave her a butt injection. that woman later became sick checked herself into the hospital and died. this happened a year ago. detectives never found evidence that taylor had any medical training. the woman's death was ruled a homicide. police may use electronic signs to find the driver who was involved in the deadly drive by shooting on i-295. d.c. police believe the confrontation started in virginia on the parkway last thursday. if you saw the other vehicle involved in the shooting you're asked to call the police. new cameras are being considered for both the g.w. parkway and b.w. parkway. a recent i-team investigation revealed some officers are worried about blind spots along the b.w. parkway in particular. the i-team found that concerns

were expressed in memos. it expects to have six new cameras on the baltimore washington parkway by january, but they're not police cameras. chicago police are looking at a bus surveillance video to figure out what caused this deadly crash. look at the scene here. that extra long articulated bus collided with several other vehicles near michigan avenue just before 6:00 last night. one woman died, eight others were hurt. including the bus driver. we're told that they'll be okay. a toddler died after being left in a hot car in florida while her mother taught class at an elementary school. she died in the car which was parked outside the school in panama city. this happened yesterday afternoon. the mother of the child says she left her in the car around 7:00 a.m. as she headed to teach class. she returned to the car eight hours later. it's not known right now if any charges will be filed. police are looking for a d.c. cab driver who took a woman far from her requested destination and then tried to get her to perform a sex act.

according to "the washington post," that woman told police that she hailed a cab in d.c. around 2:00 a.m. on saturday. she asked the driver to take her home. instead, he talk her into fairfax county and she was told to perform the sex act or get out of the car. she got out and called police. 6:19 now. the nsa can start collecting data on possible terrorists again. president obama signed the freedom act into law. it puts in most of the surveillance laws from the patriot acts that prohibits the nsa from collecting your phone records. in a tweet, he said it protects civil liberties and our national security. we learned the centers for disease control plans to shut down all shipments of anthrax across the country. this action comes after the cdc discovered it mistakenly sent a batch containing live anthrax spores to dozens of sites including the pentagon ten years ago. a sample at the private research lab in maryland was the only one

to test positive for anthrax. the cdc says an eradication -- eradiation process failed to kill all the spores. interpol put six men linked to the fifa scandal on the most wanted list. an alert includes former fifa vice president jack warner. there are also -- they're facing charges of racketeering and corruption. that news is adding to the uncertainty related to the leadership. sevenpp blatter will resign from the post. fifa faces tough choices as it works to replace blatter. regional -- plaguing the sport, smaller countries are afraid of losing clout and billions in sponsor dollars that are at stake here. prince hussein of jordan are among half a dozen candidates for the president.

but fans can take heart. women's world cup soccer begins on saturday. you can eat fresh produce from the rooftops of d.c. as the first commercial rooftop garden opens up. the 7,000 square foot garden is on 7th street in northwest. up top acres will provide microgreens, herbs and edible flowers. the company is working on two more locations, one in bethesda and in the palisades. up top acres hopes to have more than 100,000 square feet of rooftop -- let's check in with tom kierein right now. weather and traffic on the 1s. >> yeah, lawns and gardens have been soaking up every drop. we have been needing this rain and we have been getting it lightly since monday's downpours. overnight last night and this morning a little bit of a drizzle around. so things are kind of damp as

you head out the door. it's feeling like april, not june. today likely our coolest june day since 2009. it's been six years since we have had a day this cool in june. storm team 4 showing a diminishing area of scattered sprinkles around the metro area. that's with us throughout the rest of the morning and perhaps part of the afternoon. right now, cool. only in the mid 50s in prince george's, upper 50s in northern virginia. stafford spotsylvania and culpepper. northern neck eastern shore as we look at the hour by hour rain timing. also in the 50s. a few scattered sprinkles. area in green, a zone of a few showers. maybe coming down harder than drizzle. coming closer to the metro area mainly for our southern suburbs and much of northern virginia. otherwise, low clouds linger through the rest of the day into the evening hours. 6:00 to 9:00.

washington. 16th street between "r" and "t" is just opened. i just spoke to kristin wright, that's reopened at the fatal fire scene. riggs place is still shut down there because of the investigation and fire apparatus still there on the scene. wide look at the beltway. no major problems right now. we're slowing down here. up top on the outer loop as you approach colesville road. inbound 395 is a tad slow. overall, 66 a little slower than i'd like to see it through manassas probably is your nastiest spot. 95 northbound through dale city a tad slow. up top of the beltway, no major problems. back in ten minutes. >> melissa, thank you. 6:24. three people are recovering after an amtrak train sliced a car in half. that train hit the car after the car drove around the crossing arm on to the tracks. this is in jacksonville florida, yesterday. one person ejected from the car.

two others were hurt. the train was carrying more than a hundred passengers. they were not hurt. there's a disagreement brewing over the intersection in virginia. culpepper supervisors oppose vdot's new plan to make route 29 at mountain run lake road more safe. "the free lance-star" reports that vdot wants to put a traffic and r-cut traffic pattern. drivers would have to go the wrong way and then turn and make a u-turn. a traffic light would be safer even though it's more expenseive. tomorrow is called do more 24. a one-day fund-raising drive coordinate by the united way. more than 600 nonprofits are participating. the president of the local chapter explains why they need your help this year. >> the united way looks across this region and education rises to the forefront. we have seen a huge influx of

issues regarding health care. and now of course because of workforce issues, we have seen an increase in needs around food. people who are food insecure. families who are food insecure. >> you can find a full list of the nonprofits taking part in this drive at nbc washington.com. a lot of good organizations there. hey, are you always the one around your office or maybe in your home asking what's that smell? well there's a new research out that says that keen sense of smell may mean you'll live longer. a study looked at more than 1,000 senior citizens and they were asked to identify 40 different odors. those with the lowest scores were most likely to die over the next four years. a bad sense of smell does not cause death but may indicate an underlying health problem. a situation playing out in boston involving a possible terror plot. what we're learning about a man arrested late last night an his connection to a man shot to death by police. you can end up getting wet

we're following breaking news in the district. right now, two people are dead from a fire at a row house along riggs place and 16th street in northwest. here's a live look at the scene right now. firefighters still trying to figure out what's going on there. joining us on the phone is our news partner christy king from wtop. what can you tell us what are you seeing? >> reporter: aaron, when this fire broke out at 2:30, a little after 2:30 so many first responders were here with flashing lights. i looked daylight. fire hoses, it looked like spaghetti on the road. there are a lot of unknowns here. how the fire started. how many families the victims

may be from. these row houses many times include a number of units. what we do know sadly two people died here. two have serious injuries and three firefighters were hurt. but their injuries are minor. back to you, eun and aaron. >> all right, do we know right now there are more units around the row house being evacuated as a result of this fire? >> reporter: unclear on evacuations, but this row house when it was described by the d.c. fire spokesman he said the entire building is -- actually the red cross is here to help victims who may the displaced. >> all right. our news partner christy king from wtop live on the scene there. thanks for that information. let's go to melissa mollet now looking at some of the traffic impacts here. >> now, 16th street has completely reopened. so that of course is good news for people trying to get through that area. as far as riggs place there, right where the house is, that's still shut down between 16th and 17th streets and that could be shut down for some time as that

apparatus sort of stays on the scene here. maryland 95 south, 432 have a report of a new crash. trying to get some new information on that for you here. you can see some slow downs. 66 into town have some kind of stop and go spots this morning. a little slower than we see it. 95 northbound your slowest spot is through dale city otherwise looking typical. this issue earlier, 66 east at 29 and gainesville, remember that is now cleared out of the way. that was there for a while.o major problems right now as we take a big look at 29 and b.w. parkway as well. aaron and eun? >> thank you. >> let's look at the bright side here. how about this, a break from the summer heat and humidity as we get the day started with a little more rain. even if you're not stepping outside in the showers, you're dealing with some cloudy skies here. >> tom kierein has more on the damp and drizzly day and the impact it will have on temperatures where you live. >> i like that, aaron, looking on the bright side. it is rather dark though.

terror investigation. the fbi is now trying to figure out if anybody else was involved in this possible terror plot. news4's angie goff has more from the live desk. >> at this point, police say there's no threat to the general public. but agents did search a boston home and another house in rhode island. sources telling nbc news some people who lived there may be of interest in this investigation. police shot an killed usaama rahim at a cvs parking lot after they say he came at them with a large military-style knife. abdulla had been under surveillance for weeks and police were trying to interview him at the time. of that shooting. they were investigating whether the boston man was radicalized by isis through social media, and was planning a possible attack. now, the other man that you mentioned who was arrested at this point we still don't have a name or know how he is connected to the case. aaron? >> angie goff for us at the live desk, thank you.

and nbc's pete williams is in boston right now. look for his live updates on the "today" show. a d.c. instructor accused of sexually abusing a student. giovanni pena is a popular fourth grade teacher at the oyster-adams school. they received information he sexually abused a student on 19th street. they arrested pena and charged him with second degree sexual assault yesterday. and tracking down a killer, someone stabbed a man on walters lane last night. the victim went to the nearby state police barracks to help. he later died at the hospital. police are offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest. there will be a vigil later today for a 24-year-old killed outside of a target store in germantown. miriam adebayo was shot and she

met her ex-boyfriend at the target. bricker shot adebayo and then took off. they captured bricker after a short chase and crash. 6:36. a new video into the news room of a tooer in northeast d.c. smoke hanging in the sky over the apartment building. this is staples street northeast. the firefighters union said that made it into the second story walls and floor. nobody was hurt there. in bethesda dozens of people are back in their beds. a trash compactor caught fire on east west highway last night. firefighters briefly closed some roads there. it is now 6:36. a man accused of jumping the white house fence carrying a knife may face nearly two years in prison. federal prosecutors say omar gonzalez made it all the way into the east room. they requested that sentence. his sentencing is set for monday. his attorney wants a delay.

gonzalez is a u.s. army veteran and was arrested inside the white house last september. his concert drew big crowds in baltimore in the aftermath of rioting in that city. we know who will receive the proceeds from prince's benefit show. and a brand new problem on 95 south in virginia. where this problem is. you see here i'm taking a look at how to get around it. that's coming up. plus they fought hard for tax breaks to film in maryland but we'll show you why it may

welcome back. we now know who will receive all the proceeds from prince's rally for peace concert last month in baltimore. "the washington post" reports programs sponsored by the naacp

will receive funding. baltimore's youth works and one baltimore programs will also get some the money. the amount of money to be donated to each organization was not disclosed. prince performed on may 10th after 2 dead of freddie gray and subsequent riots. two hit shows who have filmed in maryland for years may be moving out with. we are staying on top of breaking news in the district at 6:46 this morning. two people are dead. several others hurt in a row house fire. firefighters are on the scene at riggs place and 16th street in northwest. news4's kristin wright has been there all morning long. she joins us live with the latest. kristin? >> reporter: yes, that's right. two people are dead in this house fire on riggs place northwest. two people with serious injuries and three firefighters with minor injuries. the row home right behind me. it is three floors. firefighters are still here. the fire has been out for some time. but now firefighters have their investigation ahead and that is figuring out exactly how this fire started. it's still very early in the
