"news4 today" continues right now at 5:00 a.m. >> "news4 today" starts now. >> so called mansion murder mystery continues. this morning, we should learn more about the hours leading up to the deaths of a northwest d.c. family and their housekeeper. what police are expected to release in hours. new information just in about the ship that capsized in china. why the search for any survivors has been called off. and take a live look outside now where clouds and chilly temperatures are lingering but are we in for another day of june gloom? let's get right to tom with the answer. good morning, tom. how does it look? >> yeah, it is rather gloomy. we've got the low clouds passing over us now. they're producing some light rain here on the storm team 4 radar. couple pockets of moderate rain. little patches of yellow in prince william county and on the line with fairfax county. southern fauquier county and north and west of fredericksburg. elsewhere, just some sprinkles,

a little bit of a light drizzle. enough to make the pavement wet throughout much of the metro area. another chilly morning. only in the mid 50s, most of the region for now. we'll stay this way through 8 clock or so. the hour by hour forecast going forward over the next six hours or so by 7:00, just near 60. maybe low 60s, scattered sprinkles. by 11 this morning in the low 60s with scattered sprinkles around. have the umbrella handy. next weather and traffic on the 1s a look at your bus stop forecast. amelia segal will join us live with that. that's at 5:11. and now with first 4 traffic, here is melissa with an update on the crash. >> yes, just hearing that police are now on the scene. again outer loop at connecticut avenue. getting word that only the right lane right now is getting by here. obviously not seeing it on camera. we know it's there. we saw some fire trucks heading by a couple of minutes ago. wide look at things overall. the beltway is looking good. with the exception of

connecticut avenue. woodyard road at rosaryville, that intersection is still down because of the nasty crash from overnight. 95 north at route 1 here in virginia, that crash has been pushed off to the shoulders. southbound has a little bit of a delay. no word on why that's happening right now, but as you're passing through a little bit of a delay southbound. 66 at nutley, wet on the road, but no real problem there. eastbound and westbound, 270 looking good. north and south. later this morning we should learn more about the deadly mansion murders in northwest d.c. police are expected to release more search warrants related to the murders. news4's megan mcgrath joins us live with what we know so far. megan? >> reporter: well, aaron you can see the police cruisers behind me here. police continue to watch over the house around the clock. now, police have been going over the crime scene for weeks now and we are learning more about the kind of evidence they have found and what they are still looking for. according to search warrants just unsealed, police are

looking at phone records for jordan wallace. that's savopoulos' personal assistant and driver. he delivered the $40,000 in cash to the house just hours before the fire was set. police are tracking wallace's movements in the days and hours before the murders and they're looking at his text records. now, wallace is cooperating and has not been charged or named as a suspect. we have learned that there was forced entry into the home, that the french door was kicked in and a boot print was found on the door. we also know that the victims' cell phones were stolen and still missing. also stolen the recording device for the security system at the home. daron wint, a former employee at savopoulos' business he's the only person charged in the murders but police believe others are involved and they're still looking for additional suspects. we are expecting to learn more about the investigation and the

evidence found in what police are still looking for when additional search warrants are unsealed later today. pack to you in the studio. >> megan, thank you. developing later this morning a judge will decide whether the media will be banned from covering a pretrial hearing for jesse matthew. the victim of the 2005 rape in fairfax is expected to testify today. attorneys for fairfax said media coverage could taint the jury pool for his upcoming trial. he is charged in the murder of hannah graham. d.c. police are investigating a sexual assault and kidnapping. a man attacked a woman walking in the 5100 block of ninth street northwest. he forced the woman inside her car around midnight tuesday and then drove to an alley and raped her. he was driving an older model

four door car. just about five after the hour. we're working to learn whether a row house that caught fire had working smoke deteblgtders. we first heard about this on "news4 today" yesterday. last night, d.c. firefighters canvassed the neighborhood passing out smoke detectors. two people died, five were hurt. firefighters are reminding you, contact them if you don't have a working smoke detector. >> what we're doing right now is canvassing the neighborhood to see who has actual working detector detectors. if yours are too old or not working we'll give them out to you. >> it's good to see them out here giving the community that support. >> now the homeowner in this incident had to jump out of the window to save himself. he is recovering at the hospital and is expected to be okay. molette green at the live desk with the developing story. a setback in china. the country had to suspend today's cutting operation to try to reach the victims of a capsized cruise ship. there was bad weather that forced them to call off the desperate efforts to try to get

inside the ship's hull. now, so far rescuers cut into two portions of it, but found no survivors. underwater search efforts are still going on and so far they have only saved 14 people and find 65 bodies. more than 450 people were on that ship when it overturned on monday night after a tornado hit in central china. that's the latest. back to you, kristin. >> thanks molette. today, we'll hear from the mayor of philadelphia and transportation officials in an announcement about amtrak. the news conference will focus on the importance of passenger rail service following last month's deadly derailment in the city. tuesday, lawmakers grilled amtrak's ceo about why safety technology that could have prevented the derailment was not installed yet. eight people died when the speeding train entered a curve and flew off the tracks.

now to decision 2016. former texas governor rick perry expected to become the tenth republican to join the race for the white house. perry is expected to announce a presidential bid in dallas. this will be his second presidential campaign. he was an instant front-runner four years ago but lost steam after a debate when he forgot the name of one of the federal agencies he wanted to close. shocking new details about a popular d.c. teacher arrested for sex abuse. what he's admitting to including the inappropriate video he sent to the student. and this morning, the search continues for a missing swimmer in the potomac. and we're just learning how crews think he may have gone under. and a live look into the district for you this morning where we are dealing with another day of wet weather. but will the kids need the rain boots for the bus stop? amelia segal joins us with that

putting up with and reach for the one you deserve. welcome back. a well known d.c. teacher admits he sexual abused one of his students in the room. giovanni pena said he sent a video to the boy. he is in jail. he was "the washington post's" d.c. teacher of the year in 2011. and many parents at the school are in disbelief now. >> i'm troubled and disturbed like everybody else in school. my daughter is scared. she says to me she's scared and i'm picking her up early today

178 after the hour. today the search continues for a swimmer last seen in the potomac in fairfax county. one man disappeared and the second man got out okay. that search went on for about three hours yesterday. "the washington post" reporter held in iran is heading back to court for another closed door hearing monday. the iranian government thinks jason rezaian was a spy. this is as the u.s. is in talks with iran over the nuclear program. some think if an agreement is reached, the u.s. will have less leverage in pushing for rezaian's release. the woman who used to be the highest ranking episcopal leader is headed for court today. she is on trial for a drunk driving accident.

police say she was drunk and texting when she hit the 41-year-old last year. she has pleaded not guilty. the postal service taking steps to fire the man who flew a gyrocopter on to the capitol lawn. doug hughes says they intend to fire him for quote unacceptable conduct. hughes landed wearing a postal service uniform in a gyrocopter labeled with the postal service logo. he was carrying letters to congress as part of a political protest. today, rockville high school will begin testing students for tuberculosis. recently, parents learned someone in the school had active tb this spring. so today the school is offering testing for those who may have come into contact with the person between february and may. tb is a bacterial disease and the risk of infection is small. disturbing new details on that live anthrax scare. this morning we're learning a military lab shipped out twice as many samples as briefly

thought. they reached labs in 17 states and three countries and the pentagon says that number could grow. the pentagon telling us as many as 51 labs are affected. they're still trying to track down more than 400 samples. the samples were packed in dry ice and sent via fedex. >> the chances of getting anthrax from the dilution of the samples is virtually nil. >> 31 are being medicated as a precaution. officials say there's no risk to the public and the cdc is expected to stop all anthrax shipments until they figure out what happened. congress is expected to be briefed in the next few days. a new health study shows the number of unmarried first time dads is dropping. the percentage dropped from 42% in the 1980s to 36% in the 2000s. fathers who had their first child after the turn of the millennium were more likely to be living with a significant

other than in the '80s. the cdc said the biggest increase is in teens and men in their 20s. what's the best age to start screening for breast cancer? a new report by the international agency for research on cancer says mammograms are most effective in women between the age of 50 and 60. and according to our news partner wtop, women between 70 and 74 also benefit. the american cancer society meanwhile recommends women start screening at 40. it says it will soon update its own guidelines based on the international research. more than 33 million americans are struggling with alcohol problems. that number is rising. that is 14% of adults affected and many have never been treated. this is the first national estimate to use the term alcohol use disorder. that term was added to a diagnostic handbook two years ago. it describes people with at least two of 11 symptoms including trouble limiting drinking and drinking that's

harming life at work, school or home. the research was published in the "journal of the american medical association." well, you might want to stop what you're doing and watch this next piece of video. this may be the first time you have ever seen something like this. this video shows an aquarium keeper in the south pacific actually hugging a leopard shark. >> oh boy. >> this guy was -- >> serious? >> he was cleaning the tank when he spotted the shark swimming toward him. when the shark got close enough he reached out brought him in for a hug. even rubbed his belly for a minute there. the shark really enjoys this, and is very playful with the staff. couldn't pay me enough. >> i know. hey it's an unusual rescue. police in arlington rescued a duckling that fell into the sewer yesterday. wow. that's going a long way -- this is at the intersection of south lange and 28th streets. an officer lowered herself into the small sewer as the mother

slowing things down a tad this morning. 270 at shady grove road looking good. remember in clinton, woodyard road, right there that intersection is still closed this morning. i do want to share something with you now. i met some real heroes as i emceed the chamber of commerce public safety award. we had about 300 people there. it was at lakewood country club in rockville. awards given for bravery and i had a great time. we honored 52 winners from rockville's police force, the city's volunteer fire department. the montgomery county sheriff's office. department of corrections. had some civilians honored for a man who was attacked leaving work last june. honoring some wonderful very brave folks. very happy to be there, guys. >> awesome. they do it selflessly. we appreciate them for sure. thank you. 5:25. a passenger bus involved in the deadly chain reaction crash in a texas highway. investigators say that bus rear-ended an 18 wheeler and that big rig hit another car on

i-10 in houston on wednesday. two people died. dozens were hurt. the bus was carrying migrant tobacco workers from mexico to north carolina. traffic was backed up for three hours. the oldest man ever to be on death row in texas has been executed. 67-year-old lester bower, jr. murdered four men after he stole airplane parts he originally planned to buy. one of the victims owned the plane. the execution came three hours after the supreme court rejected a last minute appeal. his lawyers say it's cruel an unusual punishment to execute a man who's lived three decades on death row. united airlines is apologizing after a flight attendant refused to serve a muslim woman an unopened can of diet coke. tahera ahmad said the flight attendant said she might use it as a weapon. ahmad is a muslim chaplain from northwestern university. she says a man sitting nearby on the flight told her to shut up because he thought she would use the can as a weapon.

the airline says the flight attendant works for shuttle america which is operated by united. united now saying the flight attendant will no longer serve united customers. well, it is not every day that the dalai lama touches down in australia with richard gere. hundreds greeted them as they arrived in sydney on what is the dalai lama's tenth visit to the country. gere will join the dalai lama on the 12-day tour of australia. they'll take part in several multifaced services. you may have some e-mail messages waiting for you from some of the nonprofits you have supported in the past. that's because the united way has deemed today do more 24. it's a day long drive to raise as much money as possible for the 600 organizations that have registered. cheryl petty garnett runs one of the nonprofits and she explains why this day is so important.

human shield during a shoot-out in the 2700 block of good hope road southeast. >> there are two men who are out there who can do that which is righteous. not what's right in their own lives but do what's righteous in his eyes. if they would surrender and turn themselves in. >> after yesterday's vigil friends of milton handed out fliers pleading for people to help find the person responsible for her death. more than a hundred people gathered to remember the woman shot and killed in a target store parking lot. many gathered for mariam adebayo's vigil. her boyfriend, donald bricker, killed her monday night. adebayo recently ended their relationship and bricker is now in jail. he's charged with first degree murder. today beau biden will lie in honor at the delaware state house. biden the son of vice president joe biden passed away last

weekend. on saturday president obama will deliver a eulogy at biden's funeral in wilmington. instead of flowers, they're asking people to donate to the beau biden foundation for protection of children. justices will hear an appeal on a failed bid to block sweet briar college from closing. the board announced that the school would close in march because of financial challenges. since then, supporters have mounted their own challenge. and alumni have pledged millions of dollars in hopes of keeping sweet briar's doors open. you may soon be able to take a high speed train from richmond to d.c. according to "the free lance-star," you can now see a new design for the proposed high speed rail line. it was unveiled tuesday in fredericksburg. trains would be able to travel up to 90 miles an hour on that section of the proposed line which covers more than 100 miles. we will keep you posted on any public meetings held by the

virginia department of rail and transportation to look at the proposed rail line. well, this morning we expect new details on technology that would let your car detect whether you're drunk. the department of transportation plans to update the press on what they're calling the driver alcohol detection system. the group developing that technology posted this explainer video yesterday. the system is supposed to detect alcohol levels within a second. the hope is to reduce alcohol related crashes which kill nearly 10,000 americans every year. molette green at the live desk with some breaking news. there has been a shooting in bowie on 6th street in an area known as old bowie. one person is in the hospital, shot. no word officially on the victim's condition. we're going to stay on top of this developing story. the police are still on the scene as you see from the video there. of this incident on 6th street in bowie. that is the latest. back to you, aaron.

welcome back at 5:41. baltimore's state attorney marilyn mosby wants to keep freddie gray's autopsy sealed as she works to prosecute six police officers accused in his death. she has a duty to ensure a fair and impartial process for everyone, she says. an attorney for one of the officers believes there's something in the autopsy that prosecutors don't want out in the open. mosby wants a judge to issue a gag order for all parties involved. a new report says d.c.'s public and charter schools have shown some improvement in student performance, but overall achievement is low.
