ammunition. startling new photos of a weapons man had when he breached white house security. overcast, misty and brizly. now we have showers moving in for the afternoon and evening rush. how it will impact roads and your outdoor plans. i'll tell you coming up. >>. >> we begin with the new evidence in the now three-week-old d.c. mansion murder case. this afternoon another search warrant affidavit was released. those documents relate to jordan wallace's car. wallace was the personal assistant to one of the victims. the prosecutor in the case also returned to the crime scene along with attorneys from the public defender's office who will represent suspect daron wint. in just a few minutes, we'll talk with news4's pat collins live at the scene about the case. developing right now, the media will be allowed inside jesse matthews' pretrial hearing that started just a short time ago in fairfax county where he's charged in an attempted murder and sexual assault from 2005. matthews' attorney wanted to ban

the fbi believed he was planning ang imminent attack. sources tell nbc news rahim wanted to target police officers and behead a conservative blogger who planned the prophet muhammad cartoon context in texas. police have also arrested david wright for conspiracy with rahim and have been questioning a third man in rhode island since tuesday. there is surveillance video of that shooting. police say that it will be released only after rahim's family has seen it. chris, back to you. >> thanks, erika. the man convicted of killing shandra leafy will get a new trial. this morning, the same judge that presided over the original hairing granted his request for a retrial. the defendant has been pushing for this and say hez conviction was based upon a lie. a cell mate misled the jury when they say the defendant confessed to killing levy. we're looking to get reaction from levy's family.

police are investigating the city of frederick's first murder of the year. a relative found gloria watson dead inside her home wednesday afternoon. she lived on heather ridge drive not far from ft. dietrich. police say watson died from some sort of assault. we have a crew at the scene and they'll bring you latest in a live report coming up on news4 at 5. knives, axes, rifles and plenty of ammunition. we are now getting a look at what one of the white house fence jump irs had in his car. federal prosecutors want omar gonzalez to be sentenced to prison. they showed us these pictures in court. gonzalez jumped a fence and made it all the way inside the white house with a knife last september. the iraq war veteran says he suffers from post-traumatic stress. his sentencing is set for a week from monday. the director of d.c.'s department of public works is calling it quits. do holland just announced evil leave the job after 11 years on the job. you may not recognize holland's name, but he's the district's man in charge during snowstorms.

holland tells news4 it's a stressful job and he felt like it was time for a break. he doesn't have a new job lined up yet. one of the most popular tourist destinations in the district is open again. the washington monument is once again accepting visitors after being closed for much of the last week. crews have realigned that elevator and tested the electrical system. more than 60 people were in the monument sunday when the elevator lost power. no one was injured. the baltimore's state's attorney doesn't want to know what's in freddie gray's autopsy. she wants to tha sealed. marilyn mosby tells the "baltimore sun" it will ensure a fair process as her office prosecutes six officers. gray died in police custody. a lawyer for one of the officers says there's something in the autopsy mosby is trying to hide. defense attorneys complain she still hasn't given them an outline of the evidence against the officers.

>> announcer: you're watching news4 at 4. it's now been three weeks since four people were found murdered inside a burned-out d.c. mansion. >> at this point, one man is in custody, but investigators say there may have been others involved. >> news4's pat collins has been covering this case for us and he joins us live now at the scene in northwest. pat, you saw attorneys for the prosecution and the defense at the house today. what do you know about their visit? >> reporter: here three weeks after the incident today i saw emily miller.

emily miller is the assistant u.s. attorney. she is going to be the prosecutor in this quadruple murder case. she's a hands-on prosecutor. she was at the scene here today. she's been at the scene before, surveying the evidence actually going inside looking for clues and information in the case. now, also today, members from the public defender service, they are represent pg daron wint, the man charged in connection with the case they came with their own crime scene search team. they went around escorted by homicide detectives. they spent about 2 1z 2 hours here, inside the house taking pictures, they too, surveying the scene. also today from the court we had another search at the david unsealed. this one was for jordan wallace. as you recall, jordan wallace was the personal assistant to

savvas savopoulos. he's the man who they say brought the $40,000 in cash, the ransom money, to the house while the family was being held captive. police say on the day of the fire, on the day of the murder, his car was found blocked about a car -- parked a block away. they went in looking for money wrappers, bank documents, any evidence at all that could possibly link him to this incident. but so far i don't think they've found anything of value. jordan wallace has not been charged with any wrongdoing in this case. >> that's an important distinction. pat collins, thank you very much. pat will have a lot more for us coming up on news4 at 5. now to one of the stouffer'sries trending on social media. there's new accusations about how red cross is spending money in haiti. pro publica said -- they say the red cross gave a lot of money to

other groups so they could do the work and too much of its funds have been spent on management and overhead. the head across officials say they built roads and schools and haiti is better off than it was five years ago. quote, these fund vz helped build and operate eight hospitals and clinics stem a deadly cholera outbreak provide clean water and sanitation and move more than 100,000 people out of makeshift tents into safe and improved housing. intense, amazing, get your tissues ready. those are some of the reactions this afternoon on the nbc washington facebook page to the posting by sheryl sandberg the chief operating officer for face back. sandberg posted a heartbreaking tribute to her late husband who died suddenly last month. in it she shares what she's learned about grieving. the post instantly went viral. here's how it reads. it says, quote, when people say to me you and your children will find happiness again, my heart tells me yes, i believe that, but i know i will never feel pure joy again. if you like, you can see the

a little built of sunshine coming our way tomorrow. i'll tell you when because it's going to be very little. as far as today, we didn't have any sunshine at all. it was a canopy of clouds xs earlier today we had the drizzle the mist. come up for the evening, rains and moderate rains will be moving in. we're going to kind of change the game as we move forward the next couple of hours. more wet weather here it is on storm team4 radar. look at that pocket of yellow and orange down around charles county and it's just shy of the beltway, 495 with rainfall rates a half to an inch per hour, moving to the north and northwest. it will be hitting areas like accokeek mt. vernon, alexandria, even braddock the next couple of minutes. within the hour moderate rains to the north and east and maybe even passing late by around 5:30, 6:00 right over 66. but look at the spin. easy to see where the storm system is. that storm system will eventually start moving to the

north and northeast, out to sea. so tomorrow will have fewer showers across the area. just isolated. here is a snapshot. your future weather starting at 5:00 a.m., look at all the light colors throughout the area and very scattered. we'll have clouds, yes, some scattered light showers across the area. then becoming more isolated as we get into the afternoon hours. not very much at all. and then late afternoon/evening, look at this, some sunshine starts to appear. the clouds start to thin. little bit of late-day sunshine coming your way tomorrow. 65 degrees right now with a northeast wind at 10 miles per hour, that easterly wind is what has us so cool. 61 by 11:00, umbrellas you'll need because it will still be wet. early tomorrow morning, 58 to 65, overcast, cool drizzle, spotty showers but getting better and better as we get into the afternoon hours. tomorrow the high anywhere from 73 to 76 degrees, big improvements for the weekend. i'll have that coming up in just a couple of minutes with your seven-day forecast.

santorum who came in second in 2012 and newcomers as well. that's just a start. we have five more candidates likely to announce in the coming weeks. if we add donald trump to the list, republicans will have 16 candidates for 2016. the one to watch, jeb bush said to announce on june 15th. political pundits making a lot of where he'll announce. miami-dade college they say bush is doubling down on his pro-immigration message and signaling that he is ready to take some heat for it. the bottom line, it's going to be a bruising primary and we're still a half year away from the iowa caucus. back to you. well, one of those candidates is taking aim at pope francis specifically rick santorum thinks the pontiff should stop talking about climate change etch was doing a radio interview and said quote, the church has gotten it wrong a few times on science and i think that we probably are better off leaving science to the scientists and focusing on what we're really good at, which is theology and morality. the thing is, pope francis has a

stash as prosecutors release these images. omar gonzalez made it inside the white house before agents stopped him. prosecutors are recommending a 21-month prison sentence. a federal judge has granted a retrial for the man convicted of killing washington intern chandra levy. his attorneys have pushed for a new trial because a key witness gave false testimony e. was convicted in 2010. levy disappeared in 2001. her remains were found in rock creek park a year later. i'm erika gonzalez at the live desk. we're following developments in the jesse matthew case before a judge in fairfax county. he's charged with attempted murder and sex assault in a case from 2005. the alleged victim now lives in india. she just arrived back in the area within the past couple of hour and we are waiting to hear whether she's going to testify. initially she had said that she was too tired, but a judge ordered her to come into court to evaluate her and decide when

passing right over 66. your evening forecast, take a look at it. wre expecting to hang onto the umbrellas for a while longer. we'll drop to 63 by 9:00 showers in the offing, even some scattered fog just a couple of minutes i'll be back with your road impacts for tomorrow morning and an hourly forecast for the first part of your weekend. well, police shot and killed a terror suspect in boston, and his family is still skeptical about his death. they've hired lawyers and plan to watch video of the shooting. nbc's chris clackum reports on what investigators are now uncovering about the suspects. >> reporter: boston police first showed security camera video of tuesday's shooting death of 26-year-old usaamah rahim to a group of community leaders, to dispute the claim by rahim's brother that he was shot three times in the back. after wednesday's viewing, those leaders agreed rahim was shot in the front after advancing toward officers. >> you know, he was on a

mission. he was out to get someone in blue. >> reporter: authorities also now say they'd been keeping a close eye on rahim for a while prior to tuesday's confrontation because of what they say were his jihadist postings on social media. and for threats this week to behead a victim in another state identified by law enforcement as pamela geller the activist and commentator who organized last month's draw muhammad contest in guard land, texas. >> we had 24/7 surveillance on him, and we were monitoring all potential targets. >> reporter: surveillance that included rahim's online purchase of three military-style knives last week as well as a wiretapped phone conversation tuesday where he told david wright, who's also been arrested in the case, that he was headed out right then to randomly attack police. chris clackum nbc news. the department of transportation is taking a look

at a prototype that will help prevent duis. the death toll is half of what it was in the '80s, but drunk driving still kills more than 10000 people every year in this country. today the d.o.t. saw a test vehicle with a driver alcohol detection system. it checks your blood alcohol level before you can even start the car. the system measures levels using your breath and through your skin on a touch pad. mothers against drunk driving supports this and so do some members of congress. >> we can keep drunk drivers off the road. it's not impossible and we can get it done. >> the fact is there's a lot of discussion right now about lowering the legal limit from 0.08 to 0.05. that would put a 120-pound woman in a situation where she could get arrested after a single glass of wine with dinner. >> it will take five to eight years to make the detection system smaller and cheaper. after that, if the system can reliably detect your blood alcohol levels congress will decide if cars and trucks will have to make these like seat

doesn't mean they're any safer than those old bulky boxes. >> in fact, today the consumer product safety commission launched a campaign to prevent tv tipovers from killing and seriously injuring children. >> erika gonzalez is here with a message that just can't be stressed enough. >> that's right. tv tipovers are one ever the top hidden hazards in the home. the cpsc says one child dies every two weeks from unstable and unsecured furniture and tvs. but there are ways to prevent these tragedies from happening. sylvia santiago lost her daughter one morning when the toddler crawled out of bed and went into the next room. >> the next thing i knew, i heard the tv coming down. so i immediately picked this huge tv up and just threw it. >> but it was too late. janaya died in the hospital a week later. the consumer products safety commission warns about putting a tv on a dresser or other furniture that a child can tip over. here you see a simulation of a toddler pulling out dresser

now. >> our temperatures inland are going to go way up, close to 80 degrees for the weekend. however the easterly flow will keep the beaches a lot cooler. first off, look at the numbers. if you're heading toward the chesapeake, thinking about boating, the numbers 69 degrees the current water temperature. look off the shore in ocean city, only 60 degrees. that's been cooling with that easterly flow. and take a look as we move through the next couple of days. high temperatures tomorrow only around 65 with a chance for shower activity. saturday a high of only 67. and on sunday rather breezy with that east wind, temperatures then around 65 degrees. and that could actually be a little generous with those temperatures. if you're heading toward the beaches, make sure you take the jacket there as well. >> here is a look at your four-day forecast, folks. mid-70s tomorrow. there's your 80 inland for saturday. nice conditions expected on sunday. sunday gets the a-plus grade for the weekend. here's your summer warmth your change in overall pattern. mid to upper 80s expected in fact, on thursday the end of the week we could hit 90. we start warming up.

a four-mile stretch of long beach, california, is closed and it's just the latest coastal

area to shut down because of a surge of tar balls xs authorities are trying to find out if they're from last month's major oil spill. some 140 miles away in santa barbara county. there are concerns the oily blobs could irritate swimmers' skin or make them sick. it's not eye ufo. nasa is set to test a real flying saucer tomorrow. the rocket-powered saucer was set to take off in hawaii today but had to postpone because of wind. the low-density relies on a balloon to reach altitude. it's designed to work through certain situations that coo happen when delivering heavy pay loads to mars. well, you've really got to give it up to some of our local students here in this area for what they are doing for others. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey reports on their efforts to help child amputees. >> reporter: you won't find one of these a 3d printer in many high schools. when it arrived in this s.t.e.m. engineering classroom at marshall high, students were shocked at the assignment that

went along with it, design and create prosthetic hands for children in war-torn areas of the world. >> to be honest, i thought it was extremely ambitious. >> reporter: but the s.t.e.m. engineering classes combined forces. take a look at what they've created. several students designed prosthetic attachments that kids could use for specific purposes, to play ping-pong, for example. >> i decided to make a double-sided one so they can attack the ball by backhand and fronthand. >> reporter: chester says he worried a child missing a hand might have trouble playing with other kids. >> to help, like, younger kids to create new friends by playing the game. >> reporter: another student's love of basketball was the inspiration for this prosthetic that could be used to play hoops. and the challenge of holding a book and turning the pages with just one hand led to this design. >> this is the completed hand so starting here, this is the actual book holder. it's what's going to hold the book. >> reporter: the teacher learned

about the program called hands across borders in a magazine article. she got special training, made her first hand, and convinced her vice principal to buy the 3d printer. it melds layers of plastic to create the 29-piece hands. >> you could create hands in ten hours or so with about $50 in material and then you could reprint once every six months as the child grew. >> reporter: besides creating hands the project has another benefit of i love the fact that the students can get fired up and learn something and use it and apply it concretely in the real world right now. to help somebody. >> it's nice to kind of think about helping the community and really making a difference while you're still in high school. >> reporter: the class is has already sent off a completed hand to be evaluated for quality control. by next year, they hope to be sending away one of these smaller hands to an actual child. in fairfax county, julie carey, news4. storm team4 coverage right now. it is another day with a very busy radar. >> we have a team of meteorologists tracking the
