"news4 today" starts now. >> good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist. now at 5:00, it could possibly be the biggest cyber attack in american history. chances are because of where we live you could be a victim. and it could be a major break in the murder of a d.c. reporter and it comes just as friends and family prepare to say good-bye. the video police want you to take a close look at. plus, a look at storm team 4 radar right now. you might not think so, but the sun is making a return today. >> finally. let's send it over to meteorologist tom kierein for a look what you can expect when you head out the door. good morning. >> yes, we have been suffering from solar deprivation. we want the sun back. so many people on social media are begging for it. looks like we'll have it, beginning around noontime, between now and then we'll stay with clouds and some sprinkles and drizzle on the storm team 4 radar now. right along 95 between washington baltimore, the beltway is wet. inside the beltway the pavement is wet. much of northern virginia and

southern maryland as well, scattered drizzle tracking from the east headed to the north and west. temperatures, another cool morning. we're just in the 50s to around 60 degrees in the metro area. rural areas down in the mid to upper 50s. at the bus stop this morning we'll have cloudy skies. a chance of drizzle. the ill -- still in the 50s between 8:00 and 9:00 and then cool, around 60 degrees and much lower chance of any more sprinkles and drizzle. next weather and traffic on the 1s a look at our hour by hour forecast over the next six hours. now melissa is looking at the roads early on this friday morning. >> i got off the phone with police, we're talking about 29 northbound right there. the ramp to eastbound 40. that ramp right now is shut down this morning. so a warning there. 270 north had a report of a crash between the spur and montrose road. not seeing anything on the camera. doesn't mean it's not there. we'll get some more information in the next couple of minutes.

wide look at things. beltway looking good. inner and outer loop, everything is rolling along nicely. not much construction since we are past 5:00 a.m. now. 66, 55 mile per hour inbound and outbound. no major issues on 95. we'll keep you updated and follow us on twitter. back at 5:11. >> thank you. if you're a federal worker, your personal information could be in real jeopardy this morning. the data preach at the office of personnel management put more than 400 million past and present workers' data at risk. news4's megan mcgrath is following this developing story and has more on what you can do to protect yourself. megan? >> reporter: well, eun, it's a huge hack. and millions -- potentially millions of former and current federal employees are at risk. those employees potentially had their personal data breached in all of this and china is suspected of being behind the

hack. now, the hackers broke into the computer data system for the office of personnel management, opm. personal information including names and social security numbers and birth dates may have been compromised in this. opm approved the security clearances, although a u.s. official tells nbc news it's not a worst case scenario, where identities of covert agents were revealed. federal employees though who were potentially affected in this will be notified and they're going to have access to identity theft information. they're also being advised to keep very close tabs on their personal accounts. banking accounts, other types of financial accounts just to make sure there is no activity occurring without their authorization. meanwhile, china is denying any involvement. they say that the allegations are irresponsible. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath, thank you. coming up on four minutes after the hour right now.

friends and family will pay that are last respects to a local reporter killed on her way home from an assignment in d.c. there will be a wake tonight for charnice milton. that begins at 8:00 p.m. her funeral is tomorrow. police released this new video of 14 persons of interest in milton's murder. you can see it here it shows several teens on dirt bikes and atvs. she was murdering while transferring buses on good hope road last wednesday. a teenager on a dirt bike began firing at people in a group and one of the people grabbed her and used her as a human shield. police are asking you to give them a call if you have any information and we have posted this video on our website. we have put it up on facebook. take a look. share it with your friends, see if you recognize anyone. the man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend to death

outside a germantown target will be in court today. donald wayne bricker is charged with first degree murder in adebayo's death. they got into a fight inside a car she had got out of the car trying to get away in him and he allegedly shot at her several times. officers arrested him a short time later after a car crash and chase. d.c. fire investigators are working to figure out what started a dead he rowhouse fire. they want to know whether the smoke detectors were working in the three-store house. meanwhile, we are learning the name of one of the people killed there. 24-year-old michael patrick mcloughlin died in the fire on riggs place northwest early wednesday morning. a second person died but that person's name has not been released. rescue officials in montgomery county say a cliff diver who jumped into the potomac river may be dead. two divers went into the water on wednesday afternoon near sandy landing in great falls park, virginia. one man got out okay. a second was caught up by the strong current there and disappeared. a search will continue this

morning for his body. we could soon learn whether a former teacher of the year who admits he sexually abused a student will be freed on bond. giovanni pena faces a judge at 2:00 p.m. today. pena taught fourth grade at oyster-adams bilingual school in northwest washington. court documents say he confessed to touching the boy sexually multiple times while in the classroom and sending the boy a sexual photo on snapchat. the victim was 9 and 10 years old as the abuse was happening. he told police pena had been a close family friend. new information in the murders of a northwest washington family and their housekeeper. why police are taking a closer look at one of the victim's assistants. baltimore's police chief is getting ready to talk with people directly impacted by the baltimore riots today. he's making promises to them. looking live outside this morning, it took a week, but the rain is finally moving out. tom is trying to pinpoint exactly when and he'll bring us that at 5:11.

we are continuing to look through new search warrants filed in the quadruple case in northwest d.c. right now, we know that police got a warrant for a car that belonged to the victim's assistant. it was found a block away from the crime scene. the assistant though has not been accused of anything. we also have a picture of a boot print found on the back door of that house. police believe the killer kicked

i'm molette green at the live desk with breaking news. dozens of mountain climbers are trapped after an earthquake strikes malaysia's island of borneo. the epicenter of the 6.0 magnitude quake just five miles from the mountain. the iconic donkey's ear formation was damaged. look at the before and the after this. 160 climbers are stranded right now. rescuers are trying to get them food, drinks and warm clothing on the mountain. we are hearing several of the climbers are injured. aaron? >> molette, thank you. it's 16 after the hour now and a murder investigation

underway now in maryland after a woman was found dead in her apartment. gloria watson was found inside that building near ft. detrick wednesday afternoon. this is the first murder in frederick, maryland, this year. police say she was assaulted inside her apartment and friends and neighbors are shocked. >> ms. gloria, she was always out front, especially on nice days. she was always asking how is everyone doing? >> now neighbors say watson was too nice to have any enemies. no word on a motive at this point. if you have any information, police would like the hear from you. today those affected by the baltimore riots can speak to senator ben cardin. he is expected to attend a community discussion. he will ensure that the federal government addresses the immediate aftermath of the rioting. riots broke out in april after freddie gray became critically hurt in police custody and died. six police officers are now charged in connection with his ath. more than a month after those riots in baltimore, investigators are still working

to identify the people who looted businesses. the dea release these new photos of those believed to have looted pharmacies. 27 pharmacies and two methadone clinics were hit hard and some of the pharmacies don't know what was taken. but officials say there could be hundreds of thousands of dangerous medication on the street. the white house says virginians can fight depression and grow the economy if the state expands the public health insurance program. the white house panel says expanding medicaid would bring health insurance to 179,000 virginians. that includes 16,000 suffering from depression. the expansion would also bring virginia $1.3 billion in federal money next year alone. the expansion would boost the president's health care law. 5:18. there's a new blood test that can detect every virus that you have ever caught. doctors say the test only needs a single drop of blood.

the test called virus scan look at the immune response to viruses. doctors hope the test can help them figure out if infections early in life can affect your immunity later in life. every 24 minutes a child is hurt by a topping television. today is the launch of anchor it to prevent tvs and furniture from injuring and killing children. experts say flat screen tvs should be mounted to a wall by a professional. all other tvs should be tethered with safety anchors and not just placed on top of an entertainment center. if you go to tulip grove elementary school in prince george's county you have to wait longer to move back into the school. students have been using the meadow brook elementary school on moylan lane since the fall of last year. tulip drove undergoing a major renovation right now. according to the gazette though the county is still waiting to

remember, the 395 southbound at king street work that is scheduled to last until 5:30 this morning. a live look at 66 when i'm back in ten minutes. the twister one of many spotted in northern colorado. it was spotted in larimer last night. about 30 homes were destroyed. no people were hurt though. disaster teams in china righted the capsized cruise liner in an effort to search for the remaining 340 people still missing. 450 people were on board that ship when it overturned in bad weather four days ago. so far, 97 bodies have been found. at this point, 14 people have survived. 5:23 now. police in colorado may have a serial shooter on their hands. two people have been killed in the last several weeks in the denver area. police say the 65-year-old man who was killed wednesday night was just going for a walk. two weeks ago a man was shot dead while riding his bike.

in late april a woman was shot in the neck while driving on the interstate. she survived. two of the shootings are connected and police are looking into the third. and reports of blown out car windows. >> we don't know if this is related to the other shootings and we don't know if there is somebody or somebodies that is inflicting these crimes in the community. >> there is now a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the shootings. the fbi is not calling these sniper attacks but rather shooting attacks. a collection of weapons could send an iraq veteran to prison for nearly two years. omar gonzalez jumped the white house fence in sept we're getting a look at the guns and knives police found in his car. gonzalez is set to be sentenced a week from monday. the veteran says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. virginia is now one of only

a handful of states that will have a drug to counteract overdoses. it can save lives if it's administered in the first few minutes of an overdose. governor terry mcauliffe signed a law recently that allows access to the treatment without a prescription. the law is designed for family and friends of drug abusers. you need a training class if you want the treatment. the law includes some protections for people who give the drug to a person overdosing. if you're an uber or lift driver in virginia, you can register your car today. registration officially opened yesterday. a new law that passed earlier this year requires that all personal vehicles are registered. you have until july 1st to register with the virginia department of motor vehicles. you have to be at least 21 years old. holding a valid license and carrying insurance. drivers are required to pass a background test. reaction pouring in after the huge hack affecting 4 million people. you might be one of them. what local lawmakers have to say coming up. ahead for people in bowie,

of you. federal workers' names, social security numbers and birth dates are all potentially exposed. china-based hackers are suspected. china says the allegations are irresponsible. lawmakers are demanding action to stop these kinds of breaches from happening. nbc's tracie potts is live on capitol hill with more on what they want to change. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: eun, good morning. lawmakers said we should have had a tougher cyber law long ago to prevent things like ago. we're hearing from susan collins on the intelligence committee who said the information, names social security, birth dates, could be valuable to countries like china and that's who's suspected in this. she is urging a strong response. we're hearing from mark warner, democrat, of virginia. who is accusing the government of a pattern of failure to protect the information of its workers. he calls this an escalating threat. and it's not just democrats. republicans like richard byrd of

will address that issue. >> police say this was not a random crime and they believe king was targeted. right now, six patients are being monitored after a contamination scare at the national institutes of health. a fungal contamination has been discovered in some of the medical products made by nih. fungus was discovered in two vials being used to administer a cancer drug, an experimental study. those studies have now stopped and officials have suspended all manufacturing operations at the facility. six patients who may have received potentially contaminated injections are under observation. no one has become sick so far. an fda panel is recommending the little pink pill some call the female viagra. but the final decision will not be final until august. flibanserin works to increase the woman's libido.

side effects are fainting and low blood pressure. the judge who said the woman who accused jesse matthew of rape can identify her in court. the victim sat just ten feet away as she found his photo on her own after being indicted for rape. she was attacked while walking home in 2005. the trial starts on monday. chandra levy's parents say the wounds will never completely heal. they spoke to nbc news yesterday after a judge ruled that the man convicted of her murder will be retried. ingmar guandique was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the crime. but defense lawyers successfully appealed that saying the star witness in the case was unreliable. levy's parents say this puts her daughter's killer front and center in their minds all over again. >> no matter how many trials you have you never will have your

daughter back. it should not have happened. >> guandique will appear back in d.c. superior court next week. the defense lawyers are expected to ask the judge to release him on bond while he awaits trial. prosecutors are expected to strongly object. later this morning bowie state university will hold a special training for city police officers. the fbi is staging a two-day active shooter training course in the martin luther king, jr., communication arts center. the training will start at 8:00 a.m. and last until 5:00 today and tomorrow. why is governor larry hogan pushing for a multimillion dollar study? maybe because it can get you from d.c. to baltimore in 15 minutes. and a redskins player accused of domestic violence. this morning rg3 is speaking out. and taking a look outside right now, another pretty cool start to the day. but tom says we are in for a warm-up. finally. how warm it will get in your neighborhood today

arundel county tuesday night. it came 12 hours after graduation. the group spray painted graffiti and damaged a car. the damage totaled $2,000. the boston man shot and killed over a plot to behead police officers will be buried today. the family of 26-year-old usaama rahim says that they are still reeling from his death. they also say they never saw any signs rahim had been radicalized or inspired by the group isis. a lawyer speaking on behalf of the family says they want to help police. >> the family hopes to work productively and cooperative with federal and local authorities in a joint effort to search for truth. >> rahim's associate david wright was also arrested. investigators shot and killed rahim tuesday after he reportedly lunged at them with a large knife. police say investigators were trying to question him before he boarded a bus with a knife. today, the final preparations are underway in

>> can i look now? thank you. oh, that is awful. i feel for that family. it is now 5:49. lawmakers in spotsylvania want you to pay an extra ticket tax. the stadium would be the new home for the hagerstown sun and they're considering a site in south point and the team will pick up $8 million of the $33 million price tag. the county is trying to figure out how to finance the rest. not everyone likes the tax idea at the meeting last night. lawmakers will meet again next week to continue those discussions. well, some good news if you're looking for a cheap get away. southwest airlines is extending its major fare sale through midnight tonight. the airline introduced the fall travel sale this week and pretty much everybody went on to the website and it crashed. the sale includes prices as low as $49 for a one-way nonstop flight. american pharoah a good name, right? favored to become the first horse in nearly 40 years to win

the triple crown. the winner of the kentucky derby and preakness stakes made it to belmont park in new york yesterday. looking good there. right now bookies are favoring american pharoah to win the belmont stakes with 3 to 5 odds. frosted is taking the second spot with 5 to 1 odds. the long shot bet is frammento with 30 to 1 odds. we'll find out if american pharoah can pull off the triple crown tomorrow. coverage starts at 4:30 right here on nbc4. the discovery channel is getting ready for shark week and they want you to help. we're told ciampi -- you know ciampi, the giant inflatable shark, you will see him on your way to work in silver springs. apparently, he's back at the channel headquarters and they're going to create a mural and they want you to help design it. take a look. the mural will cover the entire southside of the building that's facing colesville road. you can take a survey and vote

county. a dog was bitten by a rabid fox on upland drive last week. the dog had rabies shots and it does not look like any other pets were exposed to the fox, but that fox is still on the loose. so far in 2015, there's been 20 positive rabies cases investigated by animal control officers. walmart is putting a spin on in store pickup service. landon dowdy joins us from cnbc with that. this is for groceries? >> that's right. but first i want to tell you about pepsico. it's looking to launch a line of craft fountain drinks made with real sugar and not corn syrup. consumers are shying away from big soda brands. it will include black cherry and pineapple cream. there's no timing on a rollout to the restaurants. walmart wants to win your grocery dollars. it's being built specifically
