>> and a flying bat critically injures a fan at fenway park. tonight at 11:00 overdose outbreak is alarming health officials and social workers. >> emergency crews responded to multiple overdose scenes today in fears this could be part of a growing trend. news 4's jackie bensen is at freedom plaza tonight with the synthetic marijuana threat. jackie? >> reporter: well doreen, this is still going on right now. one group of paramedics has been literally going from place to place within a fairly small several block area all afternoon and all evening. now, this is especially frightening because a university of maryland study showed that 70% of the people who use this drug are teenagers. this ambulance is headed to a hospital and is followed by a police cruiser.

inside is the 11th overdose victim paramedics have tended to since 1:00 this afternoon. they suffered symptoms that included terrible stomach cramps, vomiting hallucinations and agitation. all were found in a few block area between union station and the ccnv homeless shelter at send and d streets northwest. we found this wrapper on the ground nearby. it was labeled mr. nice guy a brand of strawberry-flavored synthetic marijuana. homeless outreach advocate said he encountered an obviously ill woman near the georgetown law school. >> i saw a woman when i thought was drunk and she was leaning on a pole where there was supposed to be a parking meter and she was puking, so i stopped to help her, and she -- she wasn't responsive at all, but then i laid her down and called 911. >> reporter: police believe the drugs were sold this afternoon in an open-air market that has long plagued the homeless shelter and draws customers from d.c., maryland and virginia.

>> they suspect that a large shipment of really strong drugs came in from new york city. i can't keep up with all the different types of drugs. if they are the same drug with different names or actually different substances but i hear the names like gooby k2 and now train wreck which is a combination drug. >> reporter: the bottom line on this is d.c. and maryland have both reportedly seen a sharp increase in the number of overdoses due to this new and apparently much more potent type of synthetic marijuana which is illegal in d.c., maryland and virginia. back to you. >> and jackie, the maryland poison center says 40% of people who use these synthetic drugs suffer from increased heart rate. the drugs can also cause heart attack, seizures or trouble breathing. last year synthetic drugs were the third most likely source of overdoses and so far this year there have been more cases than

last. >> this drug can help victims of a different kind of drug overdose, naloxone or as it's best known narcan can help people with overdoses of opiates. now people who are worried about a loved one overdosing can get a prescription for narcan and keep it on hand in case they need it. >> bring my daughter's kilter to justice from the family of a reporter killed. a wake was held tonight in southwest d.c. mourners will return there tomorrow for a funeral. the 27-year-old was gunned down last week at the intersection of alabama avenue here at good hope road. police released this video of several possible persons of interest. milton's father wants you to take a close look at this because you might see someone you know. >> these were not strangers.

these are not ail yeps. these are individuals who have lived in this area. so the right thing to do is to bring them to justice. >> d.c. police plan to implement a new enforcement strategy to deal with dirt bikes and four-wheelers which are illegal in the district. >> there is a new voice tonight in that scandal involving former house speaker dennis hastert. nbc news spoke to a man who says he had a conversation decades ago with a friend who claims he had a sexual encounter with hastert. that friend is steve reinboldt, one of hastert's former students. rinlt died of aids in 1995 and hastert showed up at his funeral. >> i looked at him and say why did you do what you did to my brother? he stood there and stared at me and i just continued to say i want you to know that your secret didn't die in there with

and well above average as we head into next week. say hello again to the 90s. i'll show you when they move back in in my forecast. >> thank you, doug. >> new at 11:00 a north potomac man is facing life in prison. today a jury found pavel ivanov guilty of stabbing another man to death during an argument over a woman. shomari stone showed us how it started and what the killter the murder. >> reporter: tonight montgomery county prosecutors tell me the newly released surveillance video shows 25-year-old pavel ivanov holding a bag full of bloody clothes moments after he stabbed this man to death. tonight he's in jail convicted of first-degree murder today in what prosecutors describe as a love triangle jealousy case. >> he faces life in prison. he had no prior record prior to this -- this conviction. >> reporter: so what set ivanov off? the state's attorney says he was at a party in rockville with his

20-year-old girlfriend last july 4th and she started receiving text messages from brian hall, a man she was also currently involved in. >> the current boyfriend did not know that discovered text messages and became outraged jealous and the men agreed to meet. >> reporter: ivanov meet him here in green park in gaithersburg and the two men got into an argument. ivanov allegedly punched hall. hall tried to walk away and that's when prosecutors say ivanov took the knife and stabbed hall several times. prosecutors show the jury this mannequin, a graphic example of the 15 stab wounds. after the brutal killing, prosecutors say ivanov drove to his mother's home, changed into a new outfit and placed the bloody clothes in the trash bag. take a look. he appears to smell the evidence. tonight ivanov's neighbors are surprised he has been convicted of murder. they say he's a nice guy. >> it's shocking. the kid was friendly, you know, every time, you know, and, you

anyone today. >> president obama is preparing to give the eulogy for beau biden this weekend. the son of vice president joe biden will be buried tomorrow. thousands of mourners came to wilmington, delaware today for a wake to remember the former state attorney general and iraq war veteran. army chief of staff general ray odierno and two of the vice president's surviving children hunter and ashley biden will also deliver eulogies. biden was 46 years old. he died after a long battle with brain cancer. in less than 24 hours horse racy's long wait for another triple crown winner could be over. american pharoah has already won the kentucky derby and the preakness stakes. the horse is said to be doing great in practice runs this week. american pharoah the heavy favorite to win with odds of 3-5. the belmont stakes is the longest race in the triple crown. if he wins, he'll be the first triple crown winner since 1978. coverage of the belmont stakes

begins here on nbc 4 at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon. >> trouble just -- >> i'm chris lawrence at the live desk where we're following a scary situation at fenway park. a woman suffered very serious injuries tonight when a broken bat flew into the stands and hit her in the face. she was at the red sox/a's game with her family when brett lawrie came to bat. >> this is a broken bat grounder. bat goes flying into the seats and the ball goes to second. >> now in slow motion you can see the bat completely shattered right above the handle and even lawrie realizes how bad that might be. fans say they heard the woman screaming as it hit her and one even had to take his shirt off to try to slow down the bleeding. now, medics were able to get there and were able to treat her there in the stands before rushing her to the hospital. people immediately started sharing what happened on social media. boston police say she was sitting with her son, and this picture shows an officer

what you just are hearing is the moment of impact. a hospital patient stole an ambulance and then crashed it right into a semi. cameras show what happened inside the emergency vehicle. the air bags going off and sparks flying as the ambulance skids across the road. wisconsin police say the patient managed to escape and then steal another car before officers finally caught and arrested him. >> new11:00, a close call for a drone spotted flying near a southwest airlines flight near dallas love field where the drone was seen near the left wing. the faa tells us air traffic controllers to see the drone near the jet from the controller to. the plane landed safely. investigators are searching for the drone and the person who was controlling that drone.

new york city has not solved the problem of overpriced hot dogs. you may recall the story of a hot dog vendor with a cart at ground zero who charged up to 30 bucks per dog. well, he was fired but the guy who replaced him is charging up to $5 a hot dog. that's twice the price that is supposed to be posted on the cart, according to new york city law, but the vendor said it was too windy to post the prices. the owner of the cart says he had no idea his employee was overcharging. >> there's a new way for police to catch drivers who slow down for speed cameras in school zones and then take off. prince george's county police are using something called the dragon cam, a hand held cross between a radar gun and photo camera. the department plans to use it in 146 school zones around the county to catch speeders. they will begin with a 0-day pilot program with warnings for violators and then they will move on to $40 citations. >> and that dragon cam makes a

noise that's called cha-ching every time it goes off. >> that's right. so finally we -- what a nice relief it was to see a little bit of sunshine. we walked outside at 7:00. it was blazing. >> that was amazing wasn't it? what is that thing? >> it was a good feeling. >> what is that bright orb in the sky? >> and it may continue through the weekend. >> i think it will. i really think we've got a pretty good weekend coming up over the next couple of days. isolated shower tomorrow and that's pretty much it. outside right now a very nice night. down towards the airport temperatures currently around 70 degrees, and that is higher than we've been the last three days in a row with temperatures only topping out in the low to mid-60s in the afternoon. right now 70 and winds out of the west at 3 miles per hour. under some partly cloudy skies. 36 leesburg and 67 annapolis and 67 down towards the pawtuxet river. we do have a couple of showers, nothing in and around the d.c. area and back to the west and

shenandoah valley and towards virginia, will continue to move south and east. showers are continuing to die as they move on down to the south and east. you can actually see them. back towards the west there was thunderstorm activity earlier and they are drifting right on down to the south. it's with a little boundary that will move through overnight and that continues to give us rather warm air and we could see fog early tomorrow morning so know that. here's saturday at 8:00 a.m. notice some clouds and fog during the early morning hours. that should burn off and then we'll see some sun in the afternoon. the more sunny with get the better chance we have for a couple of isolated showers, maybe a rumble of thunder but notice the coverage here very scattered, if that. i think just isolated. could be a little bit more towards the bay and southern maryland tomorrow afternoon. i think this is a little bit overdone but if we are going to get some it will be closer in towards portions of southern maryland. i think the nats game tomorrow going off at 1:00 should be no problem. i believe that's a 1:30 game. saturday evening looking great. problem tomorrow night, no problem whatsoever.

80 degrees and 79 back towards leesburg and 89 in culpeper. best chance of storms down to the south and east of d.c. if you're headed to the pools, looking pretty good. more sun late and starting early we'll see the cloud cover and notice the temperature. once we get the sunshine around 10:00 11:00, 12:00 that's when the temperature starts warming up. heading down towards the beach tomorrow, could be an isolated shower there too. mostly to the inland areas and then the real cool day on sunday, easterly wind and high of 67. some areas even cooler than that so monday a little bit better day. able to take monday off, monday down at the beach looks pretty good. 78 on sunday and 87 inland on the monday and we will see a chance for some scattered showers, maybe a thunderstorm. any storms on monday and tuesday could be on the stronger side. that's something we'll watch for but i don't anticipate anything too severe as we make our way towards wednesday thursday and friday, everybody has been saying let's turn the heat up. mother nature says okay, let's

go ahead and do it. thursday and friday, high temperatures back to around 90 degrees. looks like we'll stay there, too, for a while. >> sunday looking pretty good. check out this unusual discovery in the dinosaur park in laurel. a visitor saw this large dinosaur tooth that measured 2.6 centimeters. slightly bigger than a penny as you can see. this tooth came from a raptor. their teeth are the most common meat-eating dinosaur fossils found in maryland. yikes. >> coming up in sports tonight, much more ahead. the nationals offense finally

and power is still there. that's a three-run blast. his seventh home run of the season and the nats are up three. also playing great defense and watch michael taylor the young man, makes a nice play off the wall and rocket throw and espinosa, a beautiful tag. tanner rourke loving it. espinosa twisted his arm there but he was fine. man on and the buffalo hits one to right center and rendon trying to score from first. the cubs with the relay and he beats the tag. nats are up 6-4. the top of the eighth, more defense. already two home runs on the night, going for a third. this one in center field. dennard span spanning and making a great catch right there. the nats snap their three-game losing streak and win this by a final score of 7-5.

there are some heavy hearts tonight for our news 4 family. one of our friends and colleagues died early this morning after a courageous battle with cancer. angela oakly wrote many of the stories you see on our newscast, very often the story at the end of the show in this spot. she was strong, a really strong journalist we could always count on and she was a caring friend. she also had a huge heart. she loved animals and volunteers with city dog rescue i
