tomorrow's looking a little bit better. but today you may be dodging the drops just a little bit. first thing this morning, nothing more than a spot or two of drizzle around town. those are headed down towards the inner harbor. so rain chances are highest to the inner harbor. dense fog advisory to winchester along the shenandoah valley. but not much going on around the city of washington just yet. temperatures in the low to mid-60s. 65 in washington. highs today upper 70s to near 80 degrees. so that's in the plus column, for sure. but we will have chances for rain coming up later today. not everyone's going to be hit. highest rain chances will be along into the east of i-95. really annapolis down to southern maryland. high rain chances there. low chances across parts of the i-81 corridor. rain chances near 50%. tomorrow drier weather. we'll talk about that coming up.

>> thanks. new this morning d.c. police busy working five shooting scenes in the district. take a look at this map that shows the violence from overnight. it started just after midnight with a shooting on 8th street southeast. shooting followed on martin luther king avenue southeast. chesapeake street southeast. sew somehow video from one on irvington street southwest. one victim was shot in the chest. we're told all three were conscious and taken to the hospital. recovery teams will return to the potomac area to search for a man they believe drowned. montgomery country fire and rescue believe he was pulled under by current. you'll see them around there this morning. they're starting the search around 8:00 a.m. beau biden will be buried today. president obama will give the eulogy for the iraq war veteran.

thousands are expected to attend the funeral in wilmington, delaware. army chief of staff and two of the president's surviving children will attend. biden was 46 years old. he died after a long battle with brain cancer. this morning family and friends will say their final good-byes to a reporter. there was a wake for her there last night. the 27-year-old was gunned down last week at the intersection of good hope road. police released this video of several possible persons of interest and they are asking you to give them a call if you recognize anyone in this video. police say they completed their search of the mansion where someone killed four people in northwest d.c. the savopoulos house is now boarded up surrounded by a chain link fence.

daron wint was arrested for the murders last month. new court documents saying they found knives cash, cell phones in his car along with a truck. it's not clear whether those are the victims' missing phones. we now know the name of a second person killed in dupont circle. she was a fulbright scholar. the two died on wednesday when a fire you see there ripped through a row house. investigators still trying to figure out what caused that fire. sensitive information and data for millions of federal employees are no longer private. today the damage is still being assessed after what many are calling the largest hacking attack of government computers in u.s. history. andrea mitchell has the latest on who may be behind this hack. [ no audio ] federal officials say the

computer systems are so outdated that it's not going to be easy at this point to figure out what was stolen. we'll work on getting that story later in the hour. a new warning about a synthetic drug after 11 people overdosed on one night. they overdosed on a drug called bizarre bizarre bizarreo. it has similar effects of pcp. [ no audio ] >> i thought was drunk. she was puking. and so i stopped to help her and she wasn't responsive at all, but then i laid her down and i called 911. >> so that incident happened outside the community for creative nonviolence. medics took seven people to the hospital. they are all expected to be okay. >> scary. >> very scary there.

take a look at this scary scene out of illinois. an amtrak train hits a tractor-trailer. this is just south of chicago. nobody was seriously hurt, but get this. the truck was carrying 70000 pounds of bacon when it got stuck on those tracks. and you can actually see that that bacon went all over the place. the crash split the tractor-trailer in two. and it did not impact service. today you can learn more about a plan for new cycling routes and safer bike storage. this is montgomery county. the second annual great bike

"it's a crisis that could imperil the whole economy." president obama must act now to protect care for three and a half million u.s. citizens. before it's too late... changing how you prepare for surgery could help you post-surgery. for years doctors have said not to eat or drink anything the night before an operation.

the idea was to prevent getting sick from anesthesia. but as doreen gentzler reports, doctors are finding fasting could be doing more harm than good. >> reporter: when robert frieze found out he would need to have part of his colon removed he said it wasn't the surgery he was afraid of. >> the concerns were around the interruption of things going on you know, the kids all the activities. you know, i wasn't sure how long it was going to put me out. >> reporter: but what robert didn't realize at the time was that his doctor was using a new approach to help him recover more quickly. something called enhanced recovery after surgery. >> we're doing this to make the patient feel better to get home and to recover quicker. >> reporter: enhanced recovery involves a series of steps before during and after surgery. it includes anesthesia drugs making sure patients are up and walking around after surgery,

and most importantly loading up on carbohydrates before surgery. >> well, we just again looked at all the problems why people were staying in hospital for a prolonged period of time. we looked at starvation and nutrition. and we found there's an impact by starving the body by inhibiting it from receiving things as simple as glucose or carbohydrates. >> reporter: the doctor now has his patients drink 20 ounces of a sports drink like gatorade about two hours before the surgery. that combined with the other measures is helping many the hospital faster. for example, those who have abdominal surgery typically spent five to seven days in the hospital. with this new protocol, they're now leaving after two days. >> there's no reason to starve before surgery. it might not be as appetizing in that you're not going to have a large meal but you're going to be able to drink a carbohydrate

drink that with satiate your appetite. >> reporter: the doctor says robert frieze left the hospital after about three days after the surgery. >> i was just happy to get out of there quicker. >> and that was doreen gentzler reporting. right now doctors at georgetown are using enhanced recovery. but they're finding it can only benefit patients undergoing all types of operations. we're waiting to learn the latest on the condition of a woman who was hit by a flying bat at a baseball game. >> this is a broken bat. bat goes flying into the seats. the ball goes to second. >> so this happened in boston at the redskins/ sox/athletics game last night. the bat hit the woman in the head. she was bleeding heavily, screaming for helps. paramedics rushed out to see if

she's okay. they're not sure yet how serious her injuries are. that's one of the dangers there being part of a sporting event like that. >> it wasn't too long ago -- what was it? a couple weeks ago somebody was hit by a pitch. yeah. and there is a safe net to an extent, but when you're in that front row, i mean, you are vulnerable. >> and stories of pucks going out and hitting folks out of the rink. >> anything can happen. okay. rain not done with us yet, huh? >> not yet. but no washout coming for today. so there's some good news. and the second half of the weekend is looking better than the first. and we'll be back into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees before you can say didn't june start off on a cool note. it was very nice for those of us running around the afternoons. these afternoons have been perfect for running. another good one coming up today too. you will be a chance for rain hit and miss this afternoon. we're off to a generally dry

start this morning. there are a couple of showers out there. and locally dense areas of fog first thing on your saturday morning. but it's a pretty picture over washington this morning. a nice calm finish there on the potomac this morning. 65 at reagan national. have that wind come back around to the north by later on this afternoon. not going to be all that gusty. temperatures now 63 in gaithersburg. baltimore is at 62 this morning. manassas to bristow to culpepper in the upper 50s. and martinsburg as well. heading out to the pool today. well, on the whole, a pretty good pool day. temperatures moving back up near 80 degrees today. as long as you can miss the bit of a rain chance out there not a bad day to be outside. not full sunshine, so you won't necessarily have to worry too much about getting a little sunburn. here's future weather. by noontime, that's when the showers start to get going here. what you're going to notice on

future weather is that the rain chances today will be higher once you're east of i-95. higher chances east of the bay. as we go further in time, there's the rain chances by 2:00 into parts of southern maryland. more showers continue there into the east of i-95. area of low pressure off the coast here has this general northerly flow. and out onto the eastern shore. if you're headed out to the beaches, not necessarily a bad weekend to go to the beaches. you will have a chance for rain today. but a good day to be outside. 40% to 50% chance of rain here through town. 60% or more chances into southern maryland and eastern shore. as you're planning out your afternoon, know you'll probably have to at least look out for a rain drop once or twice. couple of showers here up in westminster, maryland. those are down into northern

rundell county. everyone has the better rain chance coming up later today. an area here keeps things unsettled. for tomorrow, a cloudy start. then summery weather comes back as we get into the early parts of next week. highs near 80 today with hit and miss shower chances. near 80 tomorrow as well. i think tomorrow will be mostly rain free. thunderstorms are highest monday afternoon and evening. should be out of here by tuesday. we'll be back up near 90 degrees the way everyone likes it in june. >> so a lot of these afternoon activities that are happening later today not worth canceling because not a washout. >> wouldn't cancel it. just hit and miss rain chances. >> the son will like that. it's his birthday party. >> already two? >> already two. where does the time go?

prince george's county police are cracking down on drivers who slow down for school speed zones but then take off. the new tool is called the

dragon cam. it is a hand held device that's part radar gun and photo camera. prince george's county is the second jurisdiction to use this device. the department plans to use it in 146 school zones around the county to catch speeders. >> what we're trying to do is move our equipment around and make the best use of the equipment and to have the biggest effect as far as to get motorists to slow down. >> if you are caught speeding within the first 30 days, you will get a warning. after that, you're looking at a $40 ticket. it is a big day for horse racing fans today. final preparations are underway for the 147th belmont stakes. >> right. american pharoah is going to attempt to become the first thoroughbred to win the triple crown since 1978. affirmed was the last to sweep all three races. >> reporter: the preparation. >> he is once in a lifetime horse. >> reporter: and the practice.

>> he's trained exceptional. >> reporter: is over now. >> and the horse is ready. >> reporter: ready for his run at the triple crown. hours before post time at belmont it's hard to find anyone betting against american pharoah. >> because he's the best horse. >> i'm rooting for american pharoah. >> 100% american pharoah. >> i think he's a better horse in the race. >> reporter: he was the better horse at the derby and preakness and those who know the race say it's hard to find any flaws with american pharoah. >> i think he wins decisively. >> reporter: still heard it all before. >> affirmed got a nose in front! >> reporter: since affirmed won the triple crown in 1978, 13 horses have come to belmont with a chance but failed to take home the trophy. american pharoah's team says this year and their horse is different. >> no words to explain what we've all been feeling. just the excitement anticipation. i'm just really keeping my fingers crossed. >> reporter: that his horse will cross the finish line first.

the line that right now is the only thing between this champion and horse racing history. jay gray, nbc news, belmont park. >> i heard josh elliot talking about this. i'll tell you about that in a moment, but first catch the action from belmont park here on nbc 4 starting at 4:30 this afternoon. american pharoah is the 3-5 favorite this morning. it should be an exciting race. everyone wants to see this done whether you're rooting for american pharoah or not. but josh elliot was saying that even if they have a little rain, that might be in the benefit of this horse. you just saw how he did at the preakness. >> the preakness was a downpour, yeah. quite literally. >> in the mud. so he said that might be a little advantage if they get a drizzle and gloomy skies out there. we'll wait and see. >> i think everybody is geared towards watching the third one.

at 6:30, a look at today's top stories. seven people shot overnight in five separate shootings in the district. this started just after midnight with the shooting on 8th street southeast. shootings followed on martin luther king avenue southeast chesapeake avenue northeast, urbanton street. police say one of the victims were shot in the chest. all three were conscious and breathing when taken to the hospital. recovery crews will be back out searching for a missing swimmer in the potomac today. marco reyes-sanchez disappeared earlier this week. officials believe he drowned. beau biden will be laid to rest today. president obama will give the eulogy for the iraq war veteran.

and at 6:30 we welcome you back to news4 today. i'm david culver. >> and i'm angie goff. today is saturday june 6th. we want to get straight to meteorologist chuck bell. he has a look at your forecast. chuck it looks like we are working our way back to summerlike temperatures. >> we most certainly are. we had two days in a row where we didn't make it above 70 degrees. our coolest june days in years. now we've turned the corner, we're back up in the 70s to 80s for today. and there are 90s on the seven-day forecast once again. not any time too soon though. the overall weather impact on your day today generally low. it will be warmer than the last few days. but we will be hitting and missing with afternoon shower chances. right along the frederick/carroll county line. those are headed into howard county. out towards the bay bridge. dense fog advisory first thing this morning. temperatures are right now in the upper 50s to low and mid-60s.

a pleasant enough start to the day. rain chances will be highest today between about 2:00 and 5:00 this afternoon, but no washout coming your way. highs this afternoon back up finally near 80 degrees. your rain chances stand at about 50%. tomorrow is looking better though. that part of the forecast coming up. >> thanks chuck. the cleanup is underway after a tornado ripped through homes and businesses. this happened near carson city yesterday afternoon. tornadoes are very rare in nevada. this one was on the ground for about a minute. and take a look at this video we got. parts of colorado now bracing themselves for more severe weather this weekend. a tornado was spotted in denver yesterday. thousands of homes were damaged as that storm blew through leaving some neighborhoods under several feet of hail. you can see those homeowners there sweeping away the hail. what an incredible sight. all eyes will be on the radar this weekend. a jury convicted a man of murder in a case that started with a love triangle.

pavel ivanov stabbed bryan hall to death last july, they say. this video shows ivanov carrying a bag of hall's bloody clothes. they decided to meet after he discovered his girlfriend texting hall last year. ivanov stabbed hall 15 times. the standing for peace and justice rally begins at 10:00 a.m. more than two dozen organizations organized today's rally. all the families have lost a loved one to senseless acts of violence and the organization says homicide has become a public health epidemic in communities across the nation. today in fairbanks county, you can find out how to save the life of someone who overdosed on heroin. the first training class in our area is today. julie carey discovered tracking down that drug at pharmacies might take a bit of work.

>> reporter: jenny atwood didn't know about the drug in 2013 when she came home and discovered her brother christopher had overdosed on heroin. he died soon after. she and her parents created the chris atwood foundation. its goal? helping others by making the drug more available. >> the sad fact is overdoses have tripled in the last four years in northern virginia. the reality of that is people are going to die and medication can do something about it. so we need to get it to as many people as possible. >> reporter: a state pilot program to get the drug into the hands of lay people expanded. atwood will help provide introduction in the first training clas. these are the revive kits that will be provided. all the equipment needed to administer the drug to counteract the heroin or opiate overdose.

>> as soon as it should be easy to walk up to the counter and get it as easy to get sudafed. >> reporter: but not quite yet. she started contacting pharmacies about it. we went along today as she discovered this pharmacy which told her last week it didn't have access to the drug now says it can order it in a day. >> oh. so it comes up when you search for naloxone. >> reporter: they are requiring a prescription though. >> it's going to take a i aware for word to trickle down. >> reporter: she expects guidelines to make sure they have it on hand. julie carey, news4. >> if you're interested in the training that takes today at the campus in annedale, it will last until 4:00. today you have a chance to clean out your medicine cabinet. there's a drug takeback event today. it's going on between 1:00 p.m.

george's county wants your help to save a girl's life. >> her name is carly winn. she needs a bone marrow transfer because she has leukemia. we're told why finding one is tough. >> once you get to know her, she's a clown. >> reporter: carly known for that smile, just as wide as the day is long. but back in march, something wasn't right. her sister christine nguyen. >> and they find the devastating news that she has cancer. >> reporter: today she's in the fight of her life with a rare form of leukemia. this week they learned she needs a bone marrow transplant. here at a private all girls school they're rallying around her. >> we're all sisters here. so anybody who is affected it hurts all of us. >> reporter: today they will

pope francis is in bosnia this morning. he celebrated a mass in the capital city about an hour ago. the pope's arrival comes days after the european union set up an agreement to cultivate closer ties with bosnia. the move is part of a new western initiative to encourage political and economic change with eu money. some 65000 people are in the capital city to see the holy father. avid gardeners, listen up. you can save on your water bills and help the environment this summer by installing a rain barrel. news4's wendy rieger explains how easy it is to install. >> reporter: there it is, my rain barrel waiting for a downpour. and all it took was about five minutes to install. by myself. what issis simple about this is there is very few pieces. you have the barrel, you have the spigot that's underneath that you screw in right here. and then you have this little

piece in the top and then you put some bricks down so it sits up just a little bit. and then you have to get rid of this. some guys, the men will tell you this, use a hacksaw. and that works, but it's just a bit much. so what i did is i used these clippers and it worked really well. it took no time at all. ta-da. how easy was that? not the prettiest edge, but it did the trick and took me 15 seconds. this is so easy. that goes there. and then you go to the hardware store and you get one of these things. they cost about 2 bucks. they're these flexible drains. you can bend them and do anything you want with it. you know it's easy. just go -- this bends right

you do get a break. david has to endure rain all day because angie needs sunshine. it's got to rain somewhere. everyone has a chance of getting rained on today. but there are no washouts in your weekend forecast. our weather pattern is showing signs of changing back to a more typical june weather pattern. outside for now though, still plenty of clouds to contend with early this morning. but it is a mild start, milder than we've been the last couple of mornings for sure. 65 downtown. light winds for now out of the southwest. those winds will become more north and northeasterly as a pressure system goes by. otherwise temperatures 61 right now. there's some dense fog. this fog advisory goes up along i-81 where temperatures are in the 50s. hourly temperatures will climb up to near 70 by 9:00, 75 by 11:00 a.m. there will be chances for hit and miss showers coming in this

afternoon. rain chances today highest along and to the east of i-95. now, everyone has a chance, but rain chances will be higher today along to the east of i-95. annapolis and the eastern shore better rain chances there. here's the way future weather handles it. the rush of rain chances here could see showers in the shenandoah valley as well. but with time generally more rain chances will linger into the afternoon along the chesapeake bay and the eastern shore. things should settle back down. and tomorrow is looking like a drier day for sure. earlier this morning here's a couple of lonesome rain drops this morning. these are headed towards i-75 here over the next little bit. that's the only rain chances out there for the next hours or so. rain chances coming back in later on with daytime heating. with the beach weather a lot of folks are cramming all this stuff into the trunk right now to go down to the beach. showers likely along the

coastline today all the way down to ocean city. but better weather for tomorrow and for monday. a little on the cool side though courtesy of this number here. ocean water temperature still only 62 degrees. get into the ocean carefully. it's a little on the chilly side. for tomorrow clouds around to start. but i think sunshine is back by tomorrow afternoon. and then much more typical weather of june comes back after that. near 80 today with hit and miss rain chances. again, you're probably going to have to deal with rain once or twice today. but the odds of you getting any more than 30 to 60 minutes of rain total are fairly low. back up near 90 degrees by wednesday, thursday, friday of next week. so there's a little bit of everything for everyone. >> then those of us who really like it hot. >> yes. not me. >> i'm with you. today you're going to hear the rumble of history on the railroad tracks in manassas. holding its 21st heritage
