the forecast for today. there are rain chances for the front part of your weekend, but no washout is coming. outside this morning here's the view from our tower looking past the national cathedral. look at all the sunshine there on the east facings of the building this morning. storm team 4 radar tracking a couple of showers here. those are headed down towards the bridge over the next hour or so. there's a little bit of dense fog across parts of the shenandoah valley. on the whole going to be a good day for baseball today. the nats and the cubs first pitch is at 12:05. temperatures today, mid to upper 70s. there will be a little bit of a rain chance. nothing all that series. temperatures right now are in the low 60s in the shenandoah valley. hour by hour through the day today, temperatures climbing into the mid-70s by 7:00 this morning.

then in the afternoon up to 80. there will be showers to contend with, but they're the 30 to 40 minute long chance. not all day washout. most of the chances will be from the washington area eastbound of the bay. then dry out tonight and much better weather tomorrow. that part of the forecast coming up. >> thanks. all new this morning, d.c. police very busy working five shooting scenes in the district. we'll show you the map that will show all the violence. it started with a shooting on 8th street southeast. shootings then followed on martin luther king jr. avenue southeast, upshur street northwest. this video is from a shooting on irvington street southwest. all three were conscious and breathing when taken to the hospital. today recovery teams are back at the potomac river to search for a man they believe drowned. montgomery county crews arrived just a few minutes ago. they are looking for marco

reyes-sanchez. he disappeared wednesday. rescuers say he was swimming when he was sucked under the water by a current. they say they now believe he drowned. beau biden will be buried today. president obama will give the eulogy for the iraq war veteran. thousands expected to attend the funeral in wilmington. it will begin at 11:00 this morning president biden was 46 years old. he died after a long battle with brain cancer. and thousands of you have take ton social media this week to pay your respects to beau biden. politicians both past and present praised his service to e the country. former pennsylvania governor ed rendell took to twitter saying biden was a leader who did great things for delaware and the u.s. also president obama will give the eulogy later today. and we know vice president biden asked to give the eulogy.

we learned that army chief of staff general ray odiando and his surviving children will also deliver eulogies. this morning family and friends will say good-bye to a washington reporter. there was a wake for charnice milton last night. she was gunned down at alabama avenue and good hope road intersection. police released this video of possible persons of interest. they need your help if you recognize anybody on these bikes, they need you to call them. police completed a search of the mansion where someone killed four people in northwest d.c. the savopoulos house is now boarded up. police arrested daron wint for killing three members of the family and their housekeeper last month. investigators found knives, cell phones, and cash in his car as

well as a nearby truck. it's not clear whether those are the victims' missing phones. and we now know the name of the second person killed in a row house fire. nina breckelman. michael mclaughlin. the two died on wednesday when a fire ripped through a three-story row house on rigs place. investigators still trying to figure out that cause. the sister of an illinois man says former house speaker dennis hastert had a sexual ownership with her brother,. a now deceased student at the high school told her about the situation >> reporter: steve reinbolt was

sometimes start with a massage. and we didn't go much further into that. >> reporter: his friend said he does not know who individual "a" is, the person indicted in the lawsuit. he paid $3.5 million to conceal past misconduct. it was of a sexual nature with a male student. but hastert is charged with trying to evade federal banking requirements and lying to the fbi. former state wrestling champion gary matlock says he hardly remembers reinboult. >> he was a great teacher, a good coach, a great motivator. >> reporter: former representative barney frank says the allegations are stunning. >> also, though, frankly to me, a reminder of the hypocrisy among my republican colleagues. he then went on as speaker to

pull people over all day long in a particular speed zone. >> reporter: the cameras will only be used in school zones for radar. there are 146 of them. so if the big cameras don't get you -- >> this makes its point. >> reporter: the officer down the road with the little camera will. >> my son goes up at that school up there, kenmore middle school. and as soon as that flashing light comes on i cut back. i don't want no ticket. >> and that was tracy wilkins reporting. in montgomery county parents are v a lot to be proud of today. the district says its seniors received more than $335 million in college scholarships this year alone. we're also told ivy league schools accepted more than 200 seniors this year. so congratulations to them. >> bright futures there.

well you may be one of millions getting an e-mail monday morning saying they've been hacked. it affects 4 million current and former federal workers. and we've learned this breach it goes back 30 years to 1985 and affects nearly every government agency. officials say some names, social security numbers, job assignments, and training information could all be compromised. >> hopefully they'll get it more secure. >> there's something to be said for the old paper system where they actually had to break into the building in order to get information. >> security experts believe that china is the culprit despite the country's denial. >> we're hoping to get an update on the condition of a woman who was hit by a flying bat. this at a baseball game. >> this is a broken bat grounder. bat goes flying into the seats.

the ball goes to second. >> this happened in boston at the red sox/athletics game last night. take a look. you can see the bat breaks it flies into the stands. it hit the woman in the head. other fans in shock there. she was bleeding heavily screaming for help. paramedics rushed her out of the ballpark. they have not said how serious her injuries are, but no question. >> but it doesn't sound gooddoesn't. you fear of course balls coming at you. but then you think a bat it could be scary. >> absolutely. if you're going to the cubs/nationals game today, good weather for that. keep an eye out. could be a little rain chance, but i think they're going to be able to get the game into completion. any rain chances we have today, they're not big thunderstorms to worry about. they'll just be quick 15 or 30-minute long passing showers. then they'll be out of the way and you'll be off to a dry start after that. on the whole i think you're going to like the way the weekend is shaping up for all your outdoor activities. i wish it could be 100% dry

forecast on your saturday and sunday. we will take what we can get after the cool, cloudy, rainy stretch of weather we've had around here. we haven't seen much of anything in the way of sunshine the last couple days. at least a few breaks of sunshine now outside the studios in northwest. have sunshine on the grass first thing this morning. and temperatures are in the 60s in most neighborhoods. we're 67 in washington right now with a west wind at 3 miles per hour. mild start, up near 80 degrees today. it does come with a risk of showers. rain chances areawide stand at 50%. rain chances are actually higher the farther east you go today towards the chesapeake bay. a little tense fog in the shenandoah valley where temperatures inare in the 60s. we'll spend most of the day in the upper 70s flirting with 80 degrees. our average high now is 82. rain chances again today, everyone has a chance but rain chances are highest from i-95 to points eastbound today. just sort of file that away.

here's a high resolution computer models. bubbling up of rain just about everywhere has a chance first thing. but as we go through the course of the day, rain chances may linger longer east of i-95. through about 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 this evening. on the whole, no washouts coming. there are some sprinkles to be dealt with. this is howard county and baltimore county. just a few lonesome sprinkles. that's it. and again, we're not looking for any heavy rain today. just enough to get you wet and mad for 30 or 40 minutes before you can resume your outdoor activities. on the whole, i think you'll like how the weekend is shaping up. rain likely at the coastline for today. so not necessarily the best beach day today. water temperatures still in the low 60s. not a lot of people in the water. with an onshore breeze tomorrow. beach temperatures are stay in

and sunshine streaming into the lawn. temperatures in the mid-60s this morning. and it's a beautiful day to be outside. we will be facing a little chance for rain coming up later on this afternoon. but on the hole you'll want to do anything you can today. there's the view from our tower looking down to our nearby neighbor. both of them sitting in sunshine early this morning. a little fog out towards the shenandoah valley. one or two lonely sprinkles there. i-95 there just south of the baltimore beltway. those are headed towards the bay bridge over the next little bit. nothing all that heavy on radar first thing this morning. and we're not looking for severe weather later on today. but we do have a chance for showers coming in. so you may need a rain backup plan for an hour or so later on this afternoon. temperatures in the 60s right now. hour-by-hour through the day, we'll be up near 70 by 9:00 a.m. showers most likely today between about 2:00 to about 5:00

a tornado spotted in denver yesterday. thousands of homes were damaged as the storm blew through leaving some neighborhoods under several feet of hail. check this out. you can actually see some of the homeowners right there sweeping away the hail looked like snow. >> it did. shoveling it. >> all eyes going to be on the radar this weekend. an investigation underway right now after a university police officer in baltimore shot a man carrying a knife. police from the university of maryland baltimore say the man was holding the knife near campus yesterday. now, two officers responded and one shot the man in the leg. he's expected to be okay. baltimore police department investigators are looking into this and trying to figure out when the officers decided to fire those guns. a montgomery county jury convicted a murderer in a jealousy case. pavel ivanov stabbed bryan hall to death last july. this video shows ivanov carrying

a bag of hall's bloody clothes. ivanov stabbed hall 15 times. today families united by tragedy will gather on the national mall. the standing for peace and justice rally begins at 10:00 this morning. more than two dozen organizations organized today's rally. all of the families have lost loved ones to senseless acts of violence. the organizations say that homicide has become a public health epidemic. the rally will be at the lincoln memorial reflecting pool. you can learn how to save the life of someone who has overdosed on heroin. the first training class about narcan is going to be in our rare today. tracking down the drug at pharmacies might take a bit of work. >> reporter: ginny atwood didn't know about naloxine in 2013 when she came home and realized her

brother overdosed on heroin. he died some time later. their foundation is looking to help others to make the drug more available. >> the sad fact is that overdoses have tripled in the last five years in northern virginia and the reality of that is people are going to die and this medication can do something about it. and so we need to get it to as many as possible. >> reporter: a safe pilot program to get naloxone into the hands of lay people expanded into northern virginia. she will provide training in the first class this weekend. >> you spray that half into one nostril, half in the other. >> reporter: these are the revive kits that will be administered. >> before too long, it should be quite simple to walk up to the counter with and get it like you might get sudafed. >> reporter: but as she discovered, not quite yet. she's been calling and visiting pharmacies to find out if they

an alarming scene in illinois where a train literally split this tractor-trailer into two. no one was seriously hurt from the crash but we're told it got stuck while crashing the tracks. it spilled everything it was carrying. and get this. can you smell it? more than 70,000 pounds of bacon. amtrak service is running on time this morning, not impacted. no word about breakfast service, though, however. pilgrims started arriving in bosnia's capital city this morning ahead of pope francis' visit. his rivalarrival comes days after an agreement to cultivate closer ties with bosnia. to encourage political and economic change with eu money. some 65000 people expected to arrive in the capital city to see the holy father. changing how you prepare for surgery could help you

post-surgery. for years doctors have said not to eat or drink anything the night before an operation. as news4's doreen gentzler reports, fasting could be doing more harm than good. >> reporter: when robert frieze found out he would need to have part of his colon removed, he said it wasn't the surgery he was afraid of. >> the concerns were around the interruption to things going on. you know, the kids, all the activities. you know, i wasn't sure how long it was going to put me out. >> reporter: but what robert didn't realize at the time was that his doctor was using a new approach to help him recover more quickly. something called enhanced recovery after surgery. >> we're not doing this for cost savings, per se. we're doing this to make the patient feel better and get home and to recoverer quicker. >> reporter: enhanced recovery involves a series of steps

before during, and after surgery. it includes anesthesia drugs, making sure patients are up and walking around after surgery, and most importantly loading up on carbohydrates before surgery. dr. robert chudinski is with georgetown university hospital. >> well, we just, again, looked at all the problems why people were staying in hospital for a prolonged period of time. we looked at starvation and nutrition. and we found there's an impact by starving the body by inhibiting it from receiving things as simple as glucose or carbohydrates. >> reporter: the doctor now has his patients drink 20 ounces of a sports drink like gatorade about two hours before the surgery. that combined with the other measures is helping many patients to leave the hospital faster. for example, those who have abdominal surgery typically spent five to seven days in the hospital. with this new protocol, they're now leaving after two days. >> there's no reason to starve before surgery.

weather. this is our high resolution model. it brings up this popcorn area of showers. your most likely time for rain today is going to be noon to 2:00. rain may linger a little longer. by 2:00 this afternoon, rain chances into southern maryland. right along along the northern neck into fredricksburg. but rain chances drying up across northern maryland after about 2:00 or 3:00 this afternoon. by 4:00 today still a risk of showers basically right on i-95. and the shower chance continues into southern maryland this evening before things start to dry out once again. so everyone has the chance for rain today. but rain chance is highest east of i-95 out to the eastern shore. as far as rain chances right now, one lonely shower up here. this is going to be a little light rain here on the baltimore beltway on i-95 here in the next little bit. it's probably going to cross the

it is growing tomatoes squash, lots of herbs there. they plan to use these veggies in some of the food they sell at the games. and this is cool. a parking lot in the district is going to be turned into a giant work of art. you can watch more than 55 artists at the paint jam event happening today. takes place today at the noma junction at storey park northeast. vendors in new york city are still taking advantage of tourists. you might recall the story of the hot dog vendor with the cart at ground zero who charged up to $30 at the cart. the guy who is now there is charging up to $5 a dog. that's twice the price that should be at the cart. it was too windy to post the prices, he said. the owner said he had no idea his employee was over-charging. it's unfortunately. when you're hungry, you'll pay almost anything. nice to see they're cracking
