>> much easier. works like that in the kitchen too. coming up on 4:30 on this monday morning. want to get a check of the weather. >> and tom kierein is talking about a potential for severe weather. >> we have a fairly vigorous front, out ahead of that it's more humid when you step out the door. it's a mild morning. we are in the low to mid 60s around the chesapeake bay. closer to washington and prince george's county in mid 60s. right inside the beltway and in washington, in the mid 60s. and further to our west, much of northern virginia, it's in the low to mid 60s and rural areas as well as the shenandoah valley. mid 60s from hagerstown, martinsville and it's a balmy 70 degrees. and some mild air in the mountains too. right now, oakland is at 64. just some high clouds coming in. obscuring a little bit of that moon. now, the radar is showing some

showers here in pennsylvania. that's going to be staying to our north. but this is the zone of disturbed and severe weather that is going to be affecting us by later this afternoon. this is all part of this front that's going to be bringing in some lower humidity. as it gets closer to us late this afternoon and this evening, that's when we will see some storms. driving today, green lights for morning and midday. no travel problems weatherwise with dry pavement. it's when you're headed home, there could be some problems with storms coming through with heavy downpours. so you need the sunglasses this morning. the visor down with sunshine for the morning commute. just some clouds coming and going and temperatures around 70. then the afternoon commute, wet roads. strong thunderstorms coming through. temperatures mid 80s by mid to late afternoon. coming up next weather and traffic on the 1s, your walk to work forecast for this monday. now back to you.

i'm kristin wright at the live desk, tracking a developing situation outside of new york city. social media in morning buzzing about a police confrontation with concert goers. look here at some dramatic video from metlife stadium in new jersey. that is where the new york jets and giants play. police say late last night, crowds of people tried to illegally enter the sold-out summer jam concert. that's a hip-hop festival with artists like kendrick lamar and chris brown. one person on twitter described it as fans versus police with officers in riot gear swarming the stadium. witnesses tell our sister station in new york this started when ticket holders were turned away. it is not clear yet exactly how many people wered but quite a scene. eun and aaron, back to you. >> thank you. it's 4:33. a massive manhunt in upstate new york for two murderers who escaped from a maximum security prison. new york state is offering a

$100,000 reward for their capture. officials noticed richard matt and david sweat were missing saturday morning during bed checks. both men are serving life sentences for murder. police say they used power tools to cut through steel pipes, smashed through a brick wall and escaped through a manhole. the prison is about 200 miles from the canadian border. governor andrew cuomo says this is a crisis situation because the men could be anywhere. former speaker of the house dennis hastert will be in federal court tomorrow. before his political career started, hastert was a scout leader, a teacher and a wrestling coach. a federal law enforcement official says hastert had sexual relations with a student and then paid the that student not to talk about what happened. a fan favorite has died. friends say anthony riley took his own life on friday. riley made it all the way to the battle rounds on "the voice." pharrell williams was his coach.

he ended up leaving in january to deal with substance abuse issues. he was a fixture in philadelphia center city and often sang outside of redding terminal market and independence hall. he was just 28. a d.c. community came together in a special way to remember a mother who died. tamara gliss' funeral was this weekend. someone shot and killed her on memorial day. her friends and family held a kick ball game in her honor yesterday. they played on 6th street north west right across from where the shooting happened. her son was one of those on the field. >> i know all i have to do is take my frustration out and put it into my sports like today. all my other sports and i have to finish for her and go to the college for her. >> d.c. police say that gliss was barbecuing outside when she was shot. her friends and family believe the bullet was not intended for her. 4:35 is your time. there are vows to rebuild after a fire ripped through a historic building in leesburg.

take a look here. the mayor of leesburg said smoke began to fill the sky as a fire spread through this building. the building has been home to a jewelry store since the 1950's. no one was seriously hurt but some pets died in the fire. people were devastated as they watched the flames shoot out of the second floor window. >> so we had multiple business, men and women in the back, in the alley and in the parking garage, just watching in horror as that second story went up in a conflagration. >> damage from the fire could total up to $500,000. 4:35 right now. it was a special tribute to honor maryland firefighters who died in the line of duty. maryland state police helicopters here flying over the emergency services memorial park in annapolis yesterday.

you're watching "news4 today." >> take a look at this video. this scene is what put a police officer on leave. in texas near dallas, you can see the officer wrestling a black teenager to the ground and then draws his gun on two other unarmed teens. this incident happened on friday. the police department says that

the officer showed up to the pool party because some of the teenagers didn't live there. they did not arrest anyone. a california pilot avoided a disastrous crash landing by -- crash by landing his plane on a highway. imagine driving down the beltway and seeing something like this. the engine quit apparently on the pilot as they were on their way home last night. happened south of san jose. the 20-year-old pilot said he stayed calm and he was able to bring the plane down safely on to highway 101. his skill even helped him avoid power lines running along that road. and the crew are almost down cleaning up a spill. a spill was quote extremely unlikely because of the technology and safeguards. it is the largest spill in the state's -- in 25 years. 96 miles of coast line are affected. developing this morning, president obama is in germany right now. pressing global powers for

continued sanctions against russia. building united front won't be easy. edward lawrence has a look at what the white house is trying to achieve. edward, good morning. >> reporter: good morning eun. these talks -- they'll talk about many different things. they will talk about increasing trade with the g-7 countries about addressing climate change, but the russia issue will dominate the talks. president obama did open the talks with a little levity. he used german in the opening statement to move the -- and asked if he'd move the event outside because of the better weather and he wanted a beer. behind the laughter, there were serious undertones and serious issues to address. now the g-7 leaders will talk about a unified message against russia for its role in helping rebels try to overthrow the government of ukraine. russia denies any wrongdoing saying that any russian soldier who is fighting for the rebels is quote a volunteer there. the president will try to extend the european union economic sanctions that will expire at the end of july. this summit is also allowing

world leaders to talk about isis. now england announced it is sending 125 additional military training troops to help the iraqi army combat that threat. now, vladimir putin from russia on this russian issue has said -- denied any involvement in the uprising that's happening in ukraine. he also says to an italian newspaper that quote, you would have to be an idiot to assume that i would attack nato. so he is on the offensive talking about how upset he is. he was removed from these summit talks last year after russia annexed part of the ukraine. reporting live in washington edward lawrence. now back to you. >> thank you. this morning a multimillion dollar crystal city housing facility designed to house immigrants is not being used. thousands were supposed to live and work in that building as part of president obama's immigration plan. the executive order kept millions of immigrants from being deported but this program

has stalled after 26 states sued the administration. a 19-year-old almost fell off the side of a cliff during a hike with his sister. the girls were on -- were on their way back down horse trails falls when april meade says she lost her footing and started to slide down. meades managed to grab on to a branch though. for 45 minutes she dangled off the edge. eventually four hikers helped to pull the 19-year-old to safety. >> the only thought i had in my head was my life is over. this is it. all five of them risked their lives to save me and if they wouldn't have been there i don't know what could have happened. i can't imagine what a would have happened. >> the hikers made a makeshift rope out of clothing and tied one end to april and helped her off the ledge. bikers in texas are pushing for the release of 127 people jailed after a deadly shoot-out

last month. the sons of liberty riders road to waco and many of their friends are innocent and have been stuck in jail for weeks because they can't afford the $1 million needed for bail. nine people were killed, 18 injured. police arrested 177 police. it's still unclear what led to that shoot-out. the college board now figuring out to make up for a mistake on a crucial college entrant exam. students taking the s.a.t. believe they had 25 minutes to complete one of the sections. however, the proctor's manual said they had 20 minutes five minutes fewer. students had this problem across the country. as soon as the college board says it plans to fix the issue, we'll let you know what it will do. children around the country will cook up a storm inside one government building today. the department of education hosts the high school cooking challenge. nine teams from all over the country including here in washington will attend the

cooking up change competition. the student chefs have to create a nutritious meal on a night budget. they'll be judged by celebrity chefs and we'll know who won by 7:00 this evening. so a golf fan will be okay after a ball nailed him in the head here. look at this shot at the golf tournament in ohio. it goes completely the wrong way, right into the crowd there. the ball hit a man in the head. medics checked him out for a concussion. they say he will be fine. the golfer gave the fan a signed glove to apologize. >> yikes. we know now a woman hit by a bat at a baseball game will survive. it broke and flew toward tonya carpenter friday night. the bat hit her in the head. carpenter had emergency surgery this week. she's in serious condition right now. her friends started multiple gofundme pages to help with her medical expenses. you can find a link to those pages on the nbc washington app. all right. coming up on 4:51 on this monday

morning. 64 degrees outside right now. feels good. it looks pretty nice so far. >> but get ready. a big change is coming tom. >> we haven't had a lot of severe weather. this is the height of our severe weather season but today looks like our greatest chance of some pretty strong storms we have seen for the last number of days. that's going to be moving in later this afternoon. a beautiful morning underway. temperatures are in the 60s. reagan national at 66. inside the beltway most of the neighborhoods are in te george's county, low to mid 60s. as well as montgomery and fairfax counties. shenandoah valley, pretty mild this morning. they're in the upper 60s to near 70. lorraine is right at 70 degrees. then farther to the north of there, all the way up into the mid 60s from the panhandle of west virginia, up to hagerstown. out of the mountains too, pretty nice morning. temperatures are in the 60s to low 70s. around the bay right now, it's

generally in the low to mid 60s there. beautiful morning around the bay. you will notice the humidity has increased a bit. ahead of some thunderstorms that are moving into the midwest and into indiana, illinois. that's going to be moving into ohio later this morning but eventually as this line gets closer to us that is when we have the risk of some of the strong storms moving in. at -- as this cool front comes on through. it's a front bringing in lower humidity because it is going to be steamy throughout much of the day today. but as it goes by we'll have lower humidity moving no. for the morning, thamesemperatures stay in the 60s through 8:00. during the afternoon we'll have our temperatures hitting the mid to upper 80s. some storms coming through looks like late afternoon into the evening hours. here is the hour by hour timing of that moving on through. we'll be fine through the morning and through noontime. it's right around 2:00 or 3:00

in the afternoon. that's when we'll begin to see some storms beginning to pop up here in the mountains of maryland and into west virginia. then farther to the east, this is by around 4:00 in the afternoon, along 81 from hagerstown all the way down central shenandoah valley, those thunderstorms get closer and then they move county, loudoun and fairfax, right into the district as well. by 6:00 p.m. it's after that, between 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 p.m. that some of the downpours and some of these storms could be moving on through. some of the individual storms could produce some damaging winds and this yellow zone north and west of us, that's where the greater risk is going to be. and the main risk factor is going to be for high winds and heavy rain. there's a small risk of any hail or any tornadoes as these do move on through. then tomorrow, 70s in the morning. lower humidity moving in. small chance of an isolated thundershower during the afternoon tomorrow. then heat builds on wednesday, thursday, all the way into the weekend.

humidity returns on thursday, friday, saturday, up into the 90s. could get afternoon storms on saturday. back to you. >> tom, thank you. six minutes before the top of the hour. gas prices have been on the rise in the last few weeks but aaa say the prices can dip again pretty soon. the recent jump is normal for the beginning of summer as refineries change over to a summertime fuel blend. and get this once these prices change direction we could see the cheapest summertime gas prices since 2009. right now people in the district are paying an average of $2.86 a gallon in maryland. a gallon of regular unleaded is around $2.72. across virginia, $2.52 and in west virginia, $2.76. today the transportation and environment committee will hold a meeting and they will look at improving taxi service in the county. among them a bill that places uber and subsidies under state
