on a nice monday morning. 66 into and out of town, moving along quite nicely. 95 even through dale city, you're looking good. back in ten minutes with a live look at 270. new details into the live desk now on that confrontation between police and people at a concert outside of new york city. police were in riot gear. take a look. this is metlife stadium in new jersey where the jets and giants play. police say huge crowds of people were climbing over fences and trying to illegally force their way into the sold-out summer jam concert. witnesses describe it as chaos. barricades were overturned in the parking lot. police with tear gas positioned near the stadium's entrance. witnesses tell our sister stadium in new york this all started when ticket holders were turned away. no word on the number of arrests. eun? >> kristin wright, thank you. it's 5:03 and right now a

race against time as hundreds of law enforcement officers search for two escaped murderers. matt and sweat broke out some time before saturday morning bed check. both are serving live sentences for murder. police say they used the power tools and then escaped through a manhole. the prison is about 20 miles from the canadian border. new york state is offering a $100,000 reward for their capture. police say they have a suspect in custody after four people were stabbed near 14th and "t" streets in washington. one of the victims does have life threatening injuries. two men and a woman were stabbed. this happened around 9:30 last night. a 27-year-old man is in serious condition after his car slammed into a tree in germantown. montgomery county police say it may have happened after an altercation between the man and another group of people. police say they have spoken to

the people who may have been involved in the altercation. as you can see in this video, the car was hit so badly that the engine completely separated from it. investigators will look into whether speed or alcohol played a part in this accident. search crews are working to recover a body this morning. a 21-year-old man drowned there. they say he went missing while swimming near a dam. crews went looking for the man last night but did not find him. today, the high profile trial against jesse matthew starts in fairfax county. matthew is charged with attempted murder and sexual assault related to a 2005 case. the victim says she was attacked while walking home from a fairfax grocery store in 2005. matthew has pled not guilty. the trial is expected to last two weeks and he is also charged with the murder of uva student hannah graham. five after the hour. metro is bringing its brand new rail cars to the red line today.

the 7000 series trains will leave the shady grove metro station in a few hours from now. news4's megan mcgrath is at the station right now. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning yeah, these are new. they're high-tech. they're comfortable. 7000 series trains are coming to the red line in just a matter of hours this morning. a lot of excitement about that. now, 7:01 that's when the car is going to make its maiden voyage. you can get an idea of what the new car looks like, it's already riding on the blue line. but as i said, today is coming to the red line. riders are going to notice a big difference in terms of its look. it has blue interior. that's replacing the old orange and brown color scheme from the 1970s. that old musty carpet, well, that's gone too. the new car has non-skid flooring. there are flat screen message boards, also digital recorded announcements so you'll be able to hear the announcements a lot better as opposed to the

muffled, garbled system we have grown accustomed to. each car -- so the car can fit more passengers. and of course the new 7000 series cars are safer. they're going to be replacing the old 1000 series cars which have not held up well in crashes. these new 7000 cars have a different design, they're much stronger and they're going to roll it out here on the red line 7:01. we're going to be on board. we'll also be talking to passengers and see what they think. pack to you -- in the studio. >> thank you. 5:06 is your time. just when you thought the water was safe, shark attack. a shark bites a boy in florida. plus what's next for triple crown winner american pharoah. taking a look outside right now. calm, but expecting changes. we'll get to your bus sto

a 10-year-old boy is recovering this morning from a shark bite. it happened at cocoa beach in florida. the boy had to be flown to orlando for treatment. you can see him being taken by helicopter. lifeguards say they saw the boy and dashed into action. police say it's one of the worst bites they have seen. american pharoah now getting ready for his victory lap. everybody wants to see the horse that won the triple crown. american pharoah just the 12th horse ever to win the kentucky derby, the preakness and the belmont stakes.

he's in kentucky right now where you can see he seemed to enjoy a back at home bath. this weekend trainers will parade american pharoah around the racetrack at churchill downs. some of his young fans to say congratulations to him. >> we know how they celebrate, they have a nice path. >> i think that's a good way to do it. >> all the traveling and racing. all right time to look at the. we have been talking about a cool start to the day. severe weather headed our way. tom kierein with the latest. >> yeah. that's not until this afternoon. the first light of dawn showing up in the eastern horizon. live view from the tower camera. waiting for the bunch on the metro, you eel be comfortable in -- you'll be comfortable in short sleeves. between 8:00 and 9:00, jumping up to the mid 60s. rather humid as well. later today, that's when you'll likely need an umbrella for the afternoon. now, for the morning and midday,

this just in to the news4 live desk. a plane from our area skids off the runway as it lands in buffalo. these are photos from twitter. mesa airlines flight 3796 left from dulles, arrived to buffalo international airport last night and then skidded off the runway when it landed. mesa airlines flight was operating under united airlines. a spokesperson says it was high winds that caused the plane to leave the runway. 69 passengers on board, three crew members were told everybody -- we're told that everybody is okay. a police officer in texas is now on leave because of this

video. take a look. you can see the officer in the middle wrestling a teenage girl to the ground outside of a community pool. he then pulls out his gun on two other unarmed teens. this happened outside of dallas. you can see others arrive on the scene. the officer is on leave while the department investigates what happened. a 20-year-old pilot showed a lot of skill after landing his plane on a highway. imagine driving down the beltway and see something like this. the engine on the plane started to go out last night somewhere south of san jose. he stayed calm. he was able to bring the plane down safely on highway 101. he even managed to avoid the power lines that run along the road. something that his three other passengers were extremely grateful for. a fan favorite from "the voice" known for his soulful singing has died. friends say anthony riley took his own life on friday. he made it all the way to the battlegrounds on "the voice." pharrell williams was his coach.

he ended up leaving in january to deal with substance abuse issues. he was a fixture in philadelphia center city and sang outside the terminal market and independence hall for tips. he was 28 years old. a d.c. community came together in a special way to remember a mother who died. tamara gliss' funeral was this weekend. someone shot and killed her on memorial day. her friends and family held a kick ball game in her honor. they played on 6th street north west right across from where that shooting happened. her son was one of those on the field. >> i feel bad, but also i feel happy and i feel happy because i know she's in a better place. i feel bad because she's gone. >> d.c. police say that gliss was barbecueing outside while she was shot. her friends and family believe if bullet was intended for someone else. there are vows to rebuild after a fire rips through a historic building in leesburg. the smoke began to fill the sky as the fire spread through the

building. it has been home to the caulkins jewelers since the 1950s. no one was seriously hurt, but some pets died in the fire. people were devastated as they watched the flames shoot out. >> we had multiple men and women in the back, in the alley and the parking garage watching in horror as that second story went up in a conflagration. >> damage from the fire could total up to $500,000. it was a special tribute to honor maryland's firefighters who have died in the line of duty. that is a maryland state police helicopter flying over the memorial park in annapolis yesterday. the ceremony there honored five firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

their names were added to the wall of honor there. this was the tenth year for that memorial ceremony. pikebikers in texas are pushing for the release of 177 people released from the jail. the sons of liberty riders rode there in the hundreds. they say their friends are innocent and they have been stuck in jail for weeks because they can't afford the bail. police arrested a staggering 177 people and it's still unclear what led to that shoot-out. russia and qatar are hosting -- their hosting rights for world cup soccer are hanging in balance. if there is evidence either nation bought votes from fifa leaders they could lose the right to host the tournament. that's according to the swiss newspaper. they have denied any wrongdoing in the bids for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. fifa did not immediately respond to a request for comment. we are told a golf fan will be okay after a golf ball hit him in the head.

take a look at this shot at a tournament in ohio. it goes in the wrong direction right into the crowd. hit a man in the head. medics checked him out for a concussion. they say he'll be fine. he met the fan and gave him a signed glove. an update now on a woman who was hit in the head -- at a baseball game. boston police say that tonya carpenter is expected to survive a baseball bat hit her at the red sox game in boston on friday night. carpenter had emergency surgery over the weekend. she's in serious condition right now. her friends started several gofundme pages to help with the medical expenses. find a link on the nbc washington app. all right. now time to look at our forecast. we haven't had a lot of severe weather this spring so far. >> but today might be the day it seems. as we look outside this is the calm before the storm. it will be a rough afternoon you think, tom? >> yeah, it's looking more and more likely now. it's off to a calm start

overlooking the monuments on this monday morning. we have got a partly cloudy sky. a little more humid this morning and our temperatures are in the 60s. our severe risks for the afternoon it's fairly low risk for any tornadoes, but a medium risk for high winds and heavy rain in a moderate -- and a moderate risk for some hail as well as storms will be rolling on through later this afternoon. right now mild and rather muggy. we're in the 60s from the bay all the way to the mountains including shenandoah valley. nearby suburbs and later today in the morning hours in the 60s through 8:00. low 80s by noontime and partly cloudy and then storms likely coming through. all of this coming from the cluster of showers and thundershowers way out in the midwest right now. that's tracking east and getting close to us. here's the hour by hour timing

on that. no problems at all until 4:00 this afternoon. clouds on the increase by this afternoon. that's when we'll see some thunderstorms move into the shenandoah valley and then they move on through. then by 6:00 p.m., into northern virginia, nearby suburbs in maryland between 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 p.m. that's when the storms come through with heavy downpours thunder and lightning. after 9:00 that things settle down. maybe some lingering showers around 11:00 tonight. then in the low 70s and turning noticeably less humid tomorrow. then, heating up and humidity returns into midweek. in fact into the 90s on thursday and friday and into saturday. our hottest days of the year so far could get afternoon storms on saturday. next weather and traffic on the 1s your drive time forecast for this monday. now melissa is looking at two new crashes. >> two brand new crashes.

storm team 4 tower camera. a few blue clouds in a pink sky. starting off under the clouds it is rather humid. temperatures are in the 60s from the shenandoah valley to the bay. petersburg is now at 73. so this mild air coming in on a southwesterly flow bringing in some increased humidity. now driving today for the morning and midday, no problems weatherwise. but it's during the afternoon when you're heading back home, caution because of some storms coming through during the afternoon. dry roads for the morning commute, in the upper 60s. then for the afternoon commute should be in the mid 80s. but many area roads will be wet by later this afternoon. coming up next on weather and traffic on the 1s, a look at your walk to work forecast for this monday morning. melissa is talking about some crashes and now we have a water main break. >> this is in southeast washington. take a look at this. we're talking about alabama avenue there at stanton road. right now, d.c. water on the

>> reporter: good morning, eun. they're looking for a consensus. this is a two-day summit where the world leaders will talk about increasing trade and terrorism, but the russia issue will dominate these talks. now, the president tried to lighten the mood in his opening statement. he used a little german and asked if the event should be moved outside to enjoy the weather and have a beer. behind the laughter were serious undertones with serious issues to address. the g-7 leaders will talk about a unified message against russia for its role in helping rebels to trying to overthrow ukraine. russia denies any role in doing that, saying any russian soldier fighting for the rebels is a volunteer there. the president will try to extend european union economic sanctions that will expire at the end of july against russia. the summit is allowing world leaders to talk about isis. england announced it's sending military trainers to help the iraqi army combat the threat there. but the real issue for the president and all of the leaders

here they'll be discussing russia and that's going to be on the event for today tomorrow and also in the summit that's happening in 2016 to update what's going on. reporting live in washington, edward lawrence. back to you, eun. >> thank you. 5:33 is our time right now. this morning a multimillion dollar crystal city housing facility designed to house immigrants is not being used. thousands of immigrants were supposed to live and work in the building as part of president obama's immigration plan. it kept millions from being deported but this program has stalled after 26 states sued the administration. former speaker of the house dennis hastert will be in federal court tomorrow. he is facing accusations that he lied to the fbi. before his political career, hastert was a scout leader, teacher and wrestling coach. hastert was said to have had a sexual relationship with a student and then paid him not to talk about what happened. beginning today, a u.s.

marine will be tried for the third time over the 2006 killing of an iraqi citizen. this is according to "the l.a. times." sergeant lawrence hutchins iii is accused of murdering an iraqi man in order to warn others not to plant roadside bombs. appeals courts have overturned his conviction twice. six other marines and a navy corpsman were convicted. several say they believe the killing was brutal but saved lives. today the navy will posthumously award their second highest award to a marine. he was killed in fallujah in 2004. today, the family will receive his navy cross on his behalf. the family says he deserves it for covering a grenade with his body and saving other troops. peralta was not conscious when he smothered the grenade. the medal of honor is the highest award on the battlefield. employees at one local company will have a special guest today.

maryland senator ben cardin will tour the thompson creek window company. he is expected to talk about job creation there. this comes as this company builds a new $20 million building in upper marlborough which will allow for about 150 new positions. today the montgomery county transportation and environment committee will review three bills that would improve taxi service in the county. among them places uber and subsidies under state regulation, meaning all the drivers would have to undergo background checks. that meeting is at 9:30. 5:35 right now. thousands of students are waiting to see what will happen with their s.a.t. scores. they discovered a problem while taking the exam this weekend. the students manual said they had 25 minutes to complete win section of the test, however, the proctor's books said they had 20 minutes. a five minutes different there. the college board sayid it's trying to figure out the

you're watching "news4 today." >> it is a national day of mourning in malaysia today. 16 people died in the earthquake there last week. i measure -- it measured 5.9 on the richter scale. search crews are still looking for two missing climbers. a 19-year-old almost fell off the side of a cliff in oregon during a hike with her sister. april meades lost her footing as she came down the trail and started to slide down toward the cliff. she managed to grab on to the branch there for 45 minutes she held on, dangling 100 feet off the edge. eventually, a group of hikers helped to pull the 19-year-old to safety. >> the only thought i had in my head was my life is over. this is it. all five of them risked their lives to save me and if they wouldn't have been there, i don't know what would have happened. i can't even imagine what would

have happened. >> the hikers made a rope out of clothing. they tied one end to meades and pulled her off the cliff. crews in california are nearly done cleaning up a coastline affected by the oil spill. this comes amid new questions for the lawmakers for the company that built the coastline. they said that the spill was unlikely because of the technology and safeguards. it's california's largest oil spill in 25 years. 96 miles of the coastline are affected. the rate of abortions has fallen in nearly every state in the u.s. over the last five years, according to the associated press. the a.p. said nationwide rates have fallen 12%. the biggest changes are in states where new laws make it harder to have an abortion. abortion rights advocates say it's due in part to better access to contraception. others say there's a shift in social attitudes with more women choosing to carry their

pregnancies to term. you won't see as many slot machines the next time you go to the casino in maryland. the casinos are all getting rid of a lot of the machines. according to "the washington post," they want more room for table games. table games are also taxed less by the state. the casinos have removed more than 1,300 slot machines so far. organizers for one of the biggest sporting events in our area are scrambling to meet a deadline now. the uci road world championships is 100 days away. more than 20 miles of the route in richmond still has yet to be paved. that event is expected to bring more than 450,000 people to the area. organizers have to complete a transportation plan that includes street closings and transporting people from race site to race site. young people have been flocking to the nation's capital, but this morning we're learning that they're not the only ones headed to our area. a new survey by bank rate.com

move on through. right now 60s, panhandle of west virginia. shenandoah valley and the mountains. mid 60s around the chesapeake bay and all of this coming from a front that's triggering showers and thundershowers here. indiana and illinois, that's moving our way later this afternoon. the main risk zone in yellow zone is where we'll have a possibility of the severe weather. that's north and west of the moat row area. we're fine through the midday and until 2:00 or 3:00. around 4:00 in the afternoon that we'll have some thunderstorms moving into the shenandoah valley. up into washington and frederick counties in maryland. then between 6:00 p.m. through around 9:00 to 10:00 p.m., that's when we'll have the risk of some strong storms, northern virginia and maryland rolling on through. after that, things will be settling down, maybe a lingering shower by 11:00.

and by noon, low 80s. the storms will move on through in the mid afternoon. tomorrow, into the mid 80s. lower humidity moves in. might get an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon. then the heat builds and humidity returns and the hottest days may be thursday, friday saturday. into the low to mid 90s. some storms on saturday afternoon. a look at the next six hours, next weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:01. melissa is looking at the monday morning commute. >> not looking so hot right now. 355 at big woods road in the urbana area. we have the chopper showing us what's going on there. but the latest information is that the road is closed because of the crash. off ramp off kenilworth a closure there. alabama avenue at stanton road in southeast still have that water main break from earlier and then the green line delays in both directions. they're still hanging on because of the earlier problem.

$2.53. in west virginia, it's about $2.76. people buying new cars are going for smaller engines. this morning ford says two-thirds of people bought the f-150 pickup truck opted for one with the v-6 engine. compare that to when the majority of pickup drivers were buying it with v-8 engines. car buyers are ready to downside. apple is holding the annual developer's conference today. cnbc's landon dowdy is live with that and more for your money. >> good morning to you. apple holds the developers conference in san francisco today. analysts expect the company to preview a new version of the ios 9 with major updates to maps for the ipad. they're expected to unveil the radio service and new tools to develop apps for the apple watch. and may integrate apple pay into the customer rewards program.
