you're county the next 15 or fauquier county the next 15 or 20 minutes. the line making its way toward us new york through our area. talk more about this throughout the evening from nbc4 and the storm center. i'm jim handly at the news4 news desk. the national transportation safety board calling for immediate action today to fix a problem that may have led to january's smoke incident at la fant plaza metro station. the problem, investigators tell us some cable connecting the to the power supply were installed without ceiling sleeves. those sleeves are designed to keep moisture out of high-voltage conductors and prevent a short circuit. the ntsb says metro must now fix the problem by implementing a program to ensure that all power cable connecting the are covered. one person died, you will, dozens of people rushed to the hospital when smoke filled a tunnel close to the la fant

plaza station in january. the ntsb will hold a two-day investigative hearing into the electrical malfunction later this month on capitol hill. i'm jim handily. back to you. testimony is under way in the jesse matthew trial. he is accused of trying to kill a woman in fairfax county back in 2005. we have been inside the court listening over to word and david, what's happening right now? >> reporter: chris, this case is moving very quickly started this morning with jury selection, now moved on to opening statements and we are at this point in the middle of testimony. we are hearing from the victim herself, she is on the stand right now. my colleague, julie carey is in there listening in. i want to show you a few of the quotes and listen in. "i was screaming, yelling and i was dropped on the curb" referring to her 2005 assault here in the city of fairfax. she says, "he sat on my legs. he banged my head on the ground." she said "i was just screaming and he hit me again.

he then choked me with one hand and i became unconscious." the victim says after that, the suspect in this case, who has been, according to prosecutors, said to be jesse matthew, then assaulted her sexually with his hand. now, this victim is on the stand right now right now, she is continuing to testify. jurors were picked this morning, they were chosen, dozens came into the courtroom. they had to determine whether or not there were any biases because of how high profile this case was worried about media attention tainting the jury pool. they had to weed out several jurors, finally got down to 14 seven men seven women, two of those will be alternates. at this point though they are sitting through that testimony. they heard first from the man who came to the victim's aid and drove her to the hospital. now they are hearing from the victim herself. hear a lot more when we join you at 5:00. as i said julie carey sitting in right now, bring you details when we see you at 5. for now, pat, back to you. >> all right, david culver.

less than an hour ago, prosecutors announced a me deal that guarantees the east coast rapist will spend the rest of his life behind prison. aaron thomas pleaded guilty today in prince georges county to three rape charges. also responsible for rapes in prince william fairfax and loudoun counties and in connecticut and rhode island. prosecutors say today's agreement spares victims the pain of going through a trial. a violent fight between two passengers on a metro train sent riders scrambling to get out of the way. we should warn you, the cell phone video that we are about to show you is graphic and it maybe disturbing to watch. this happened yesterday on a southbound green line train. two men were on board arguing in the aisle. one walked up to the other and started punching him repeateded eded repeatededly. the beatdown continued for several minutes leaving the victim bloody and dazed. metro police stopped the men when they got off the train at the 7th avenue station. the man injured refused to press

charges. a short time ago, prosecutors charged a 70-year-old man with stabbing a woman to death in one of the district's most popular areas. manuel ramos is accused of stabbing santos ventura and three other people last night near 14th and t northwest. ventura was 64 years old. two other men and a woman were all rushed to the hospital. police say ramos stabbed him in an apartment building in the neighborhood. right now, first at 4, police are combing through every inch of land in upstate nook looking for any clues about the whereabouts of two convicted killers who broke out of prison. even the governor says someone had to have helped them. david sweat and richard matt took off from the clinton correctional facility on saturday. now, it's high in the adirondack mountains near the border with vermont and canada. more than 200 armed officers are now searching the area. the prisoners used power tools to cut through the walls of their cells and crawl through a maze of underground pipes. they even left a racist yellow sticky note in their bunks telling guards to have a nice

day. >> we are going through the civilian employees and the private contractors first. i would be shocked if a correction guard was involved in this. >> well coming up later in the newscast, we will take a closer look at that escape and who may have helped them. the tsa is coming under fire for its screening of the airport workers. the tsa failed to spot 73 people on the terror watch list. that's according to a new government accountability office report. those workers had active clearance badges. the reason tsa is not authorized access to all terrorism-related information and thousands of records used to check potential workers for incomplete. the tsa says it agrees changes need to be made. walter scott's family says they are happen pay grand jury decided to indict a former police officer for murder. cell phone video shows michael slager firing eight times at scott as he was running away unarmed. this happened in south carolina after a traffic stop in april.

means the poe tens that we could see a tornado or two come through our area. with these severe thunderstorm warnings mainly issued, the newest one until 4:45 fauquier county, advancing toward ashburn gainesville, bull run, the next couple of minutes. so, right there along 1529 this storm packing a lot of lightning and heavy rain with it another warning up to the north impacting areas like martinsburg, sheppard's town and boonsburg the next few minutes with a lot of lightning. the tornado watch covering areas to the east, isolated tornado possible, damaging winds hail and downpours, give you the timing of it all coming up in a couple of minutes. we will be right here. quick shuttle flight to buffalo getting blown right off the run watch it happened last night from dulles. united express 3976 was trying to land around 11:30 ben the plane skidded right off the runway and into a grassy area. the pilot told passengers that a

boonsboroboonsboro. a line of potentially severe storms headed toward the dmv. the entire area is under tornado watch with the exception of calder county. chief meteorologist, doug kammerer er kammerer, has the forecast in just minutes. i'm jim handily back at the live desk. defense officials this afternoon confirm that unknown intrude verse hacked into the army's public website. now this is what you see if you try to log on, nothing but a blank screen. the hackers are demanding that the u.s. stop training rebel fighters inside syria. here's a full-screen look at that page. the army says it took down the website as a precaution. a group called the syrian electronic army has claimed responsibility. they tweeted out this screen shot of an apparent message that appeared on the site before it crashed. it reads "your commanders admit they are training the people

they have sent you to die fighting." unlike the massive hack into the opm records last week, officials stress the army's public website contains no official classified information or private personal data of any personnel. at the live desk i'm jim handly. >> thanks jim. boston police just released surveillance video that shows the moment when police shot and killed a terror suspect. now the video's blurry. it was taken from a burger king surveillance camera about 50 yards away from where police and fbi agents shot and killed usaamah rahim. investigators say he kept coming at them and didn't drop his knife when they told him to. two hours earlier, rahim told a friend he wanted to target police for an attack, according to some court documents. a local drug bust at several homes lands nearly two dozen people in jail. it was part of a crackdown on open-air drug markets in maryland neighborhoods. news4's mark see graves is working on that story for news4 at 5. here's a preview.

>> reporter: residents have been complaining for more than a year about open-air drug markets in their community. and this morning police in montgomery county did something about it, along with the fbi prince georges county police and even police in philadelphia and new jersey took part in these massive raids. dozens of search warrants executed, many of them right here in this neighborhood. 18 people arrested. tens of thousands of dollars in cash confiscated fisfiscated as well as 11 guns and a large amount of drugs. >> in addition to making 17 federal arrests and one state arrest this morning, acts and police officers executed a total of 33 federal search warrants, primarily on residences, in addition, on two businesses. i believe 32 of those were here in maryland and one of them was in new jersey. >> reporter: police and prosecutors say there may be more arrests coming and those who were arrested today may face additional charges. they are already facing between ten years and life in prison.

in montgomery county mark segraves, news4. >> thanks, mark. as these storms roll energy the watches and warnings seem to be changing by the minute. doug, give us an update. >> yeah, just got a new severe thunderstorm warning jefferson county west virginia and washington county, maryland, for a storm tries the north now at 40 miles a hour. take a look, tornado watch now includes just about everybody in our area. the only exception calvert county, st. mary's county westmoreland county, not in a tornado watch, again this whole watch goes until 8:00 tonight, really want you to be aware as far as this is concerned. now, what we can expect isolated tornado threat, yeah, we still say isolated, even though is a watch, damaging winds going to be a bigger factor here, a little bit of hail and very heavy downpours that is the case, too. here's what's happening right now, you notice the warnings up to the north, another warning down toward fauquier county. this is the strongest storm right now. actually a couple storms here, one right over warren ton. warren ton getting pounded. this severe thunderstorm warning until 4:30. another one back toward the west, this is another storm

here, one storm, two storms, this one making its way toward the north-northeast, or rather east northeast 40 miles per hour, close to manassas about 4:39, gown toward clifton and fairfax county around 4:46 if it holds together. a lot of lightning with this. other severe thunderstorm warning we have right here, jefferson county, north of charlestown, around shepherdstown, notice the warning up toward washington county, in through portions of maryland includes boonsboro about the 4:33 hour, sharpsburg at about 4: 24. so, just know that. these are very strong storms the biggest threat right now is going to continue to be winds. we have already seep winds upwards of 50 to 60 miles a hour, had trees down with the same storms notice the line of storms back to the west, the tornado watch all the way up from our area up toward new york. the only warping up here toward the poconos this through parts of pennsylvania. that's really about it. going to continue as the night goes through to see this whole thing transition through the area. so what are we really expecting here? tornado threat, still on the low

damaging winds. >> and the chances of storms will last right through the evening. meteorologist veronica johnson, has the latest in the storm center. vj? >> through the evening. in fact, late evening, until perhaps 8, as late as 9, maybe 10:00, a few locations east, we have had a handful of thunderstorm warnings no tore need go warnings as of yet that could change. everywhere you are seeing in yellow exception of st. mary's, calvert county, under a tornado watch. there is that potential. self voor thunderstorm warning until 4:45 fauquier county. i think we will see severe warning for prince william county, storm northeast, 40 miles an hour packing a lot of lightning, headed toward areas like bull run, yorkshire, chantilly, another warning to the north headed toward washington county. this one impacting minorsville areas like smithsburg in the next couple of minutes. if a tornado warning comes up for your area your county or where you are, remember seek shelter inside right away. make sure it is to the lowest

level of an interior room. stay away from windows and doors. travel, exercise, getting out and about impacted a big way this evening. we will have a lot more on the timing of these storms when they move out and a heat wave for this week coming up in a couple of minutes. >> thanks vj. right now at 4:30, a violent attack on metro is being shared on social media. the video is graphic hard to watch. a man is seen punching out another man on the southbound green line train. nobody has been arrested. a jury is seated, opening statements have been give. and now, testimony is under way in the jesse matthew case. matthew is accused in the 2005 attempted murder in fairfax county. he has pleaded not guilty to all charges. matthew is also the primement is ment is -- prime suspect in the kidnapping and murder of a uva student. police identified man shot near a metro stop in prince georges county. someone shot him in a car last night and then driven to the

capital heights metro to meet up with paramedic. they rushed him to the hospital where he died. fog was 22 years old and police do not think this was a random shooting. the outer loop of the belt way is moving again after a truck accident in montgomery county. a truck overturned between bradley boulevard and river road. several lanes were blocked while crews cleaned up a diesel spill. today in fairfax county, police kicked off a new kind of training to get inside the head of those struggling with mental illness, maybe change some minds. 20 officers put on headphones and ear buds and spent 45 minutes hearing voices. the exercise is supposed to stimulate what someone with schizophrenia might be ex-peer enwhying and give the officers a better idea of someone they might encounter on patrol. >> we can talk academically about what mental illness is and what somebody might be suffering, but to be in somebody's shoes and to experience what it's like is a whole different world.

continuing to watch severe thunderstorm barges pop swarnings popping up now, into frederick county and washington county, includes

thurmont. more importantly, closer to the area of most population, manassas heads up, a big-time storm moving your way. notice a brand-new severe thunderstorm warping, in effect for prince william county as well as fairfax county including the city of fairfax a lot of lightning with the storm, moving in from barwarrington, up along 66, a very intense storm. as we move this storm at 40 miles per hour that's exactly about 40 minutes away from the d.c. metro area here. so, again, 4:41 you are looking at manassas. yorkshire, 4:44. clifton, includes burke, 4:49. fairfax, 4:56, burke 4:59. d.c. at 5:19. again, in the next 40 minutes, prince william county, fairfax county and then the district, heads up a very strong storm. winds in excess of 60 miles an hour. we continue to keep you posted all afternoon. >> thanks, doug. tropical storm blanca is churning over the baja

california peninsula, after making landfall earlier today. it's the earliest landfall in the area since 1993. americans on vacation in mexico tweeted about being stuck in their hotel rooms while they waited for the storm to pass. some tourists snapped a few pictures before the heavy winds and rain hit. blanca was a hurricane on saturday, but its winds weakened when the storm approached land. the women's world cup is under way and the u.s. soccer team has a big game tonight. alex morgan and the u.s. team have their first match against us a frame ya at 7:30. believe it or not it's been 16 years since the u.s. women won the world cup. even though they are ranked number two, a lot of experts consider them the favorite to win it all. get up to speed on the games on the nbc washington app and search world cup. there's no rest for the winner. the owner of american pharoah says the 3-year-old will not be retiring. retiring, as is common after the

severe storms are moving into the d.c. area and officials just issued a new warning. >> we are tracking downpours and the chance for some strong, gusty winds. meteorologist veronica johnson has the latest from the storm center. vj? >> yeah reports already from some of the storms just west of our area of some wind damage in fred kick county, virginia, shenandoah county too trees small trees down even some wires. meanwhile, we continue to see some scattered storms ahead of the mainline. going to be looking at some high winds with these storms as they come through as late as 8, maybe even 9:00 this evening. severe thunderstorm warnings a cluster of them, appear to the north, hagerstown, frederick, fairfax, the sky you just saw, you have been looking to the west, seeing the darkening sky, the clouds billowing up this particular cell that we are tracking now, got a lot of lightning with it currently, producing a a lot of rain. look at this, come into areas like chantilly, fairfax eventually manassas the next couple of minute, timing out to lotten, 5:04 on to mcclaine by

5:11. a lot of rain, downpours, means reduced visibility on area roads that cell is tracking right to d.c. and the beltway, too, by around 5:15 to 5:30. meanwhile, another cell in thurl month, this northeast bound. at least going to be making its way out of our area soon. if we have a tornado warning that's issued, of course, just a reminder, need to get to the lowest level of your home or the structure that you're in, an interior room, away from any windows and doors. we have had the heat today. temperatures topped out in the upper 780s. at 86 now, reagan national that southerly wind. for us some of the winds that come through with these storms, they could be just over 50 miles per hour. so we have talked about the threat of some damaging winds. i think that's the main threat with the storms that we have today. that means some downed trees as we have seen already. and some slight structural damage taking place across the area. road impact forecast for your evening, gusty with heavy downpours, so, use caution if

you're going to be on area roads as late as 7, 8, 9:00. for late night still could see heavy rain moving through, i think at times, even by around 10:00. by morning, just a few hours left. roads wet but giving you a green light for early tomorrow morning. here is a look at the probability of rain as we go through the evening. look at this our chances are going to actually be going up by 7, 8:00. by 9:00 your chance of seeing some thunderstorms, 80% back down by 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the morning. forecast for the evening will be around 80 degrees between 6 and 8 p.m. and then 73 early tomorrow morning. still some warm days ahead and some hot days for the end of the week. talking about a little miniheat wave building, the index thursday and friday around 100 degrees. the high temperatures stay with us there over the next couple of days at the end of the week. again, weather alert day for us. tracking storms on radar, some severe thunderstorm warnings and have a lot more coming one that tornado watch in just a couple of minutes. >> all right, thanks, vj.

police say they plan to be a low-key presence tonight at a protest in texas. it was sparked by this controversial confrontation outside a pool party. the video has a lot of people talking. activists are demanding that a police officer be fired. >> in fact a teenager who found herself in the middle of it all says she can't believe what happened. she talked to nbc's ray viedda. >> i pull oddity out my phone and started recording. >> reporter: a teen on the ground, an officer holding the teen down, happened at a pool party, a community pool at craig ranch north, heavily promoted on social media. ample a lot of people at the pool already. >> reporter: many in attendance weren't part of the community. that's one reason they were called to the pool, police same moments later officers from mckinney rolled onto the scene, literally. they had desispersed the crowds and this officer, in particular was using some profanity. >> at this point, we are investigating and premature for

students. damascus sherwood and walter johnson high schools no longer use separate colors for males and females, according to the "washington post." several other schools in the county plan to make that change next year. we are working to find out how the college board plans to make up for a mistake on a crucial college entrance exam on saturday. a misprint caused students taking the salt s.a.t. to believe they had 25 minutes to complete a section of the test. the proctors were told the student also to finish within 20 minutes. many students were caught off guard when their time ran out five minutes earlier that expected. if you like to play the slots, it's getting a lot harder to find them at maryland's largest casinos. more than 1300 slots have been cut the past three months from maryland live horseshoe casino and hollywood. the casinos are opting for more table games. the trend could be reversed in ex-year when mgm national harbor opens in prince georges county.

the entire region under a tornado watch now, severe thunderstorm warnings and conditions coming in at the top of the hour. >> look at the map. we have a team of meteorologists for you tonight tracking the line of storms rolling into our region now, we kick it off with doug. what is the latest? >> a couple of severe thunderstorm warnings out there some about to come through d.c. >> we have had a number of reports already as some trees powerlines down in virginia, frederick county, shenandoah county and now the damaging wind threat really increasing over the next hour. >> that is the biggest thing, the wind threat we have a tore need go watch in effect, means we are watching for tornadoes as well. the biggest threat is always going to be damaging winds and already seep some of those, as veronica said power outages back toward the west. zoom in, one severe thunderstorm warning now in through fairfax county, coming right through the city of fairfax. you can see that warping here in the darker yellow here, ends right around the beltway, but again, i do think that this storm will continue to progress off toward the east. it is right over manassas.

manassas getting pummeled, 66 right now getting hit very very hard. we look toward the east this is coming on through fairfax. here is burke center, around the burke center parkway, about to get nail wood i this storm, too a lot of lightning associated with this down toward clifton this will move across in toward 66 falls church, within about the next 15 to 20 minutes. these storms are moving very quickly. more shower activity the most part in through montgomery county, herp done reston area, gettersburg mount airy. this storm was severe no longer severe, snaking back toward pennsylvania, along 16. now we do have the chance for possible tornadoes, that's something we want to you watch out for. veronica, just widen that out for me as much as you can. i want to show the line back toward the west what we are seeing as far as that line is concerned. the next line, look at that line really getting its act together in through pennsylvania. more storms for us forming on down through the south, what's going to be coming through later on. continue to keep you posted here from the storm center, tornado watch goes until 8:00 tonight. >> doug, thank you. alleged
