w all that goes. we'll be keeping an eye on it this morning. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, megan mcgrath. the purple line is getting a nudge. maryland's transportation secretary is backing the project as long as the price tag is cut. it was recommended that larry hogan approve the project, but caan wants it reduced. it would connect without going into d.c. governor hogan is expected to make a decision some time this month. while you were sleeping two stranded hikers were rescued near the potomac river. they got on to the island, but were unable to get back because it was too dark. a police helicopter spotted them, trapped on some rocks. montgomery county fire crews guided the people to boats and got them safely back on land. this was near old anglers inn. no one was hurt. a man is in serious condition after being hit by a

driver of a car in wisconsin avenue. this happened during rush hour last night. the man was in a crosswalk near van ness street when he was hit. the driver who hit him stayed at the scene. the d.c. police, they were on the scene for several hours trying to figure out what happened. already warm outside. >> i know. 4:31. weather and traffic on the 1s. we're talking about a big heat wave coming. >> the temperatures are inching up, tom. >> it was warmer this morning than yesterday, but still pretty nice. in the 60s and 70s. county by county low to mid 90s. as well as in montgomery county, mid 90s, in fairfax county, alexandria, falls church. and right in the district, inside the beltway, may actually get to the mid 90s. 94 right in washington, with some high clouds coming through. and from loudoun county into prince william, stafford culpepper and orange, it should be in the low to mid 90s this afternoon. southern maryland cooler by the bay.

down outbound b.w. parkway, just outside the beltway. don't have an incident right now that's reported but i'll keep an eye on that one for you. otherwise, prince george's county aside from the fatal clash in clinton looking good. then remember outbound river road at wilson lane, have that paving project very likely going to last for the next 30 minutes or so. should be out of the way by about 5:00 when things pick up. back in ten minutes. i'm kristin wright at the live desk where we are following the manhunt for the two escaped prisoners. the search has intensified and expanded. right now police are swarming vermont looking for these two prisoners. they have also shut down a road near the prison in new york to investigate some sort of lead. meanwhile, everyone on high alert, wanted billboards are posted along highways. matt and sweat used power tools to escape and navigated a series of pipes and tunnels to get out. both were serving life for murder.

today investigators are questioning a prison seamstress about the escape. she is said to have befriended both men. all right, kristin wright thanks. a man is waking up in custody this morning accused of a deadly stabbing in montgomery county. residents in a silver spring apartment complex came home to a homicide investigation last night. a man stabbed another man outside the wood lake apartments in the fairland neighborhood. the police have not revealed the men's names but say they did know each other. today greg anthony's case is expected to be dropped. he was accused of soliciting a prostitute back in january. prosecutors agreed to dismiss the case if he performed 32 hours of community service over the last four months. 4:35. today we expect to learn the details of a possible terror

case. officials from the fbi and a virginia u.s. attorney are holding a press conference this morning. details are scarce but news4 is working to bring you more information. that press conference starts at 10:00 a.m. lawmakers and congress are working to renew the rule to prevent d.c. from regulating pot. a measure is to keep the city from spending money to enact the illegal marijuana law. that means the district can't tax or sell pot. however, the drug is still legal for personal use in your home. d.c. wants to crack down on synthetic marijuana. mayor muriel bowser proposing a new bill to give police chief cathy lanier a chance to shut down the stores that sell them. >> we expect many more cases are going unreported and untreated. >> stores who indulge should be penalized. >> last week about a dozen of people overdosed in d.c.

all right. listen to this, if you bank in columbia, maryland. howard county police say this man installed an atm skimming device at the federal credit union on sunday. a caller told police the scanner appeared suspicious. it was a skimming device attached to the machine with tape. you should monitor your accounts if you use that machine. and listen up there are some new rules. here are some of the changes. you can look -- you can book courts more than seven days in advance of play, but only book four courts per day and not all of the courts will be available to reserve. four courts will be used on the first come first served basis. some changes will go into effect starting midnight tomorrow. new gruesome details are emerging in the deaths of the family and housekeeper.

welcome back. new grim details about the mansion murder details in northwest washington. investigators found a bloodied baseball bat in the savopoulos' family burned home. the warrant says savvas savopoulos had injuries to the back of his head. someone killed him and his wife and son and housekeeper inside the mansion had week. investigators arrested daron wint and believe there are others involved in this case. a junior agent with the secret service has been placed on administrative leave. he is accused of flirting with a young woman while he was supposed to be on duty attended by the first lady. he asked for the lady's phone number and the department of the homeland security and secret service are now investigating. turning our attention to the weather weather and traffic on the 1s.

we are talking hot weather. what's going on? >> you can have the windows open now it's pleasant. not much humidity around. and for drive time today, morning midday and afternoon, all green lights weatherwise. you will need the windows closed though by midday and during the afternoon. you will need that a.c. on in the car and lots of hazy sunshine. temperatures by 8:00 to 9:00 jumping into the upper 70s and then by the afternoon hitting the mid 90s. we'll have dry roads just a few clouds building. might have an isolated shower in the shenandoah valley. right now, temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70. a bit cooler in the mountains. nearby suburbs, montgomery, fairfax counties, upper 70s. next weather and traffic on the 1s, a look at when the heat wave ends. that'll be at 4:51. now, melissa, what's going on with the construction? >> had some road work here, still kind of hanging around. another 20 minutes or so before this wraps up. right now in prince george's,

you're watching "news4 today." >> pay attention, okay? >> never mind, don't play with me okay? >> share the road. that is the message from the d.c. man who shot this video you're looking at here. the cyclist who shot the video, robert robert fitzgerald is speaking out for first time. he shot that from the video mounted on his bicycle. it shows an suv illegally parked in the bike lane. this was tuesday morning. he calls police on his cell phone to report the driver. the driver who we now know is a delaware state police officer walks over and tells fitzgerald to keep it moving. >> he was a bit aggressive as soon as he heard i was making a call about it. he showed a gun and a badge and i thought it was a u.s. marshal.

>> when fitzgerald watched the video he realized it was a delaware state police officer. news4's shomari stone reached out to the state police and they're aware of the video they say. cyclists tell news4 they worry about being hit as they go around parked cars on "l" street. developing at the white house, president obama plans to send more u.s. troops to iraq. he'll make an announcement about it later today. nbc's tracie potts joins us from capitol hill. tracie, are we looking at a shift in strategy at this point? >> to some degree a slight shift in strategy angie, because they had planned and had been talking about mosul, and now they want to help the iraqis retake romadi. it's important because there's a lot of sunnis are. this is a big problem, with trying to fight isis in iraq.

so, from our standpoint, what the white house is now confirming is another 450 noncombat troops will be sent to iraq. they'll shift the ones already there in anbar and then bring in it's 450 more. the mission -- force protection but not to fight on the front lines. this will bring a total of more than 3,500 noncombat troops and there's some back and forth here on capitol hill about that. from democrats and from republicans who think that this is not a good strategy. not a strategy at all. they think that isis is essentially trying to pick a war, pick a fight with the united states as we continue to send in more people. and this our armed forces will be forced to fight at some point if they're armed and attacked in the middle of a war zone. angie? >> tracie potts, thanks. a rape trial in fairfax surprisingly ended before the defense could make their case, but the judge did convict jesse matthew. he is now awaiting sentencing

later this year. matthew entered an alford plea he acknowledged that the prosecutors have enough to convict him, but did not admit guilt. he was convicted of sexual assault for the attack of a woman in fairfax. >> the dna pretty much sold -- >> did you think you'd go in the jury room convicting him? >> i personally -- yeah. >> he faces life in prison and he'll be back in court later this month on murder charges for the death of uva student hannah graham graham. feminist groups say they'll take more action against the university of mary washington if it does not do more to protect their students. they claimed that people posted threatening messages on the app yip yap. the school's president said he couldn't disable it because it

you're watching "news4 today." >> congress is debating a plan to give the national park service $2 billion for next year's operations. but right now lawmakers are not setting aside money to replace the fleet of helicopters. a recent news4 i-team investigation revealed two are overdue for replacement.

they have flown hours longer than the federal government recommends. they help to lead the presidential moatpresident presidential motorcades. they're still analyzing the need for replacements. today leaders in montgomery county will consider a bill that would require your job to give you sick leave. employers would have to give you at least one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours you work. the time off would have to be paid and you can use it if you or a family member is hurt or sick or if you're dealing with a domestic violence cut. and cutting back on overtime as we head into the summer, many of you are worried about safety. we're told that the officers couldn't get overtime. the police didn't want to comment on a budget matter. vice chair derrick david said this no overtime order not coming from his office. >> there's a large overtime budget already in the police and
