looking as good as they can. >> thank you, melissa. 5:03 is your time. expect a tight ride on metro headed to work today. there are fewer rail cars on the tracks. metro pulled the cars off the track because of this issue. doors opening while the train is moving. news4's megan mcgrath is telling us what this means for commuters this morning. megan, good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning eun. it means that things will be crowded on metro not just today but friday and through the weekend. so that they can do safety inspections on these 4000 series car. passenger using their cell phone. it shows the problems that they have been having with the doors on these older 4000 series cars. they open up unexpectedly and in this case, the train was actually traveling through a tunnel when it happened. obviously a big safety concern so metro has pulled 100 of these 4000 series cars.

they have been taken out so inspections and repairs can be done. metro will be running fewer eight-car trains and running six-car trains instead. of course, fewer cars, shorter trains, that means more crowded trains. so we are expecting to see some pretty tight conditions here beginning this morning with this first rush hour. now, we're here at the west falls church metro station. they just opened their doors a short time ago. very early. the first riders are getting on to metro so the system is looking pretty good right now but of course as the volume builds, as more and more passengers try to get on the shorter six-car trains, we are expecting things to get a little bit more congested. a little bit less room on those trains than usual. so people are going to want to plan accordingly. back to you in the studio. >> thank you megan. the purple line is getting a nudge. maryland's transportation secretary is backing the project as long as the price tag is cut. pete caan recommended his boss, larry hogan, approve the light

rail project. but caan wants the cost reduced by $300 million. the proposed purple line would connect bethesda stations without going into d.c. governor hogan is expected to make a decision some time this month. while you were sleeping u.s. park police rescued two stranded hikers near the potomac river. the rock climbers got on to the island but they couldn't get back because it was just too dark. a police helicopter spotted them trapped on some rocks in montgomery county fire crews were able to guide the people to boats and got them safely back on land near old angler's inn. no one was hurt. police in prince george's county say parts of old alexandria ferry road are now closed following a fatal accident. this happened earlier this morning in clinton. news4 is on the scene, we're working to find out more about what happened. today, d.c. prosecutors are expected to drop a criminal case against basketball analyst greg anthony. d.c. police arrested him for

soliciting a prostitute back in january. cbs suspended him from the air. prosecutors agreed to dismiss the case if anthony performed 32 hours of community service over the last four months. today we expect to learn the details of a possible terror case. officials from the fbi and a virginia u.s. attorney are holding a press conference this afternoon. details are few but news4 is working to bring you more information. that press conference starts at 10:00. new developments in the fifa scandal this morning. a soccer legend wants to run for president of the troubled organization. zeko played in three world cups and he coached several teams. he said he is now saddened by the corruption. sepp blatter announced his resignation last week amid the corruption scan scandal. 14 people were indicted. and swiss authorities removed a

by now you have probably watched this disturbing video of a former texas police officer wrestling a black teenage girl to the ground. now we're hearing his side. david casebolt apologized through his lawyer yesterday. his lawyer said he was not targeting minorities outside the pool party in a dallas suburb. rather, he was distraught after responding to two suicide calls earlier last friday. >> he does recognize that his emotions got the best of him. and that the prior suicide calls put him in an emotional place. that he would prefer not to have been in when responding to this call. >> the attorney for the 15-year-old girl who casebolt wrestled to the ground believed excessive force violated her

civil rights. the officer resigned from the mckinney police department tuesday night. activists are demanding that prosecutors charge him. looks like summer is getting ready to kick in to high gear. >> that's right. 5:11. weather and traffic on the 1s, tom is here with more on the forecast. hey, tom. >> you know, usually we start getting our heat waves around this time of year. this morning it's pleasant at the bus stop. temperatures should be hovering in the low to mid 70s. then we'll be jump into the upper 70s. so a big jump from where we are now. it will be a bit hazy. we'll have some of the humidity beginning to build by then as well. so wear short sleeves today. you won't need an umbrella. you'll need the sun block by this afternoon. you'll need sunglasses as well. next weather and traffic on the 1s coming up at 5:21. we'll look at when this heat wave ends. that's in ten minutes. melissa has an update on a serious accident. >> just had an update from prince george's county police. sounds like they're trying to reopen this road in clinton by

there's been a flurry of action in upstate new york as the search for two escaped prisoners expanded overnight. police closed route 374 near clinton prison. prisoners prisoners escaped over the weekend. so far, there have been no sightings of the two in vermont but residents are still on edge. to keep an eye out for trespassers in barns but they don't want anyone approaching the two. witnesses have been called in a controversial police shooting case in fairfax county. a grand jury is deciding whether to indict officer adam torres for killing john geer two years ago. officers showed up for calls of a domestic dispute, and torres claimed he moved his hands toward his waist as if to grab a

weapon when he shot him. others say that geer's hands were by his head. a man is waking up in custody accused of a deadly stabbing in montgomery county. residents in the silver spring apartment complex came home to the homicide investigation in their parking lot last night. take a look. a man stabbed another man in fair -- in the fairland neighborhood. the victim died at the hospital. and police have not revealed the men's names, but say they did know each other. a man remains in serious condition after being hit by a car on wisconsin avenue. this happened during rush hour last night. police say the man was in a cross walk near van ness street when he was hit. the driver who hit him stayed at the scene. the d.c. police major crash unit, they were on the scene for several hours trying to figure out exactly what happened. news4 is working to keep you safe and secure. a heads up if you bank in columbia, maryland. police in howard county say

someone installed a skimming device. the atm's card scanner appeared suspicious and it was loose. it was actually a skimming device attached with tape. you should monitor your accounts especially if you have been to this bank. lawmakers and congress are working to renew the rule to prevent d.c. from regulating pot. a new draft bill includes the city from spending money to enact the marijuana law. the district cannot tax or sell pot. however, the drug is still legal for personal use in the home. and d.c. wants to crack down on synthetic marijuana. mayor muriel bowser proposed a new bill to give police chief cathy lanier the power to temporarily shut down stores that sell synthetic drugs. >> we expect that many more cases are going unreported and untreated. >> synthetic drugs are extraordinarily serious. they are in fact deadly.

>> last week, about a dozen people overdosed on synthetic drugs in northwest. under the new law the chief could close stores for up to four days. just in, more trouble for nepal. a landslide this time while people were sleeping. the landslide buried six villages in the mountainous northeast. heavy rains triggered the disaster. landslides are common unfortunately during monsoon season. people there in nepal are still recovering from those earthquakes. in april and may that killed more than 8,000 people.right, thanks. it's now 5:19. we may now know one of the sources of the frightening listeria outbreak that forced the shut down of blue bell creameries. it may be linked to the nonsanitary room in the oklahoma facility. the company hasn't been a i believe to pinpoint a single force for the contamination at

the texas plant. in "news4 your health," a new study says fewer underaged people are drinking in the u.s. drinking among 12 to 20-year-olds dropped about 6%. this is between 2002 and 2013. now, underaged binge drinking dropped about 5%. the agency says at least 39% of those in the older group 18 to 20-year-olds say they binge drink. well, keep fidgeting. a new study says constant movement that's so common in kids with adhd may actually help them in school. physical activity like bouncing on a ball chair or even chewing gum seems to allow these children to focus on some difficult tasks. that is according to research from the university of california at davis. teachers may want to allow the kids to fidget a bit as long as it doesn't disturb the rest of the class. mothers who have c-sections can now hold their babies the moment they're born.

the new gentle c-section is available at the university medical center. with a traditional c-section, it can be ten minutes or more before the mother and baby meet face to face. >> use a clear drape when the baby is about to be delivered so the mother can see her baby enter the world. >> even if you don't want to see that part of the birth, you can now hold your newborn baby much sooner with the new technique. volleyball players listen up. if you play at west potomac park on the national mall, there are some new rules. here are just some of the changes. you can book courts more than seven days in advance of play. you can only book though four courts per day and not all are available to reserve. four courts will be left for a first come first served basis. some of the changes will go into effect midnight tomorrow. if you had to guess which city would you say would see the

they were not shy in sharing those naked photos. some malaysians say the disrespectful act angered the spirits of the mountain and caused that earthquake. the irs has a new initiative to protect you from having your identity stolen. we don't know the details of the plan just yet, but the agency says it will announce them in a news conference this afternoon. we'll bring that to you. and then in the next few weeks the supreme court will decide whether to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. and a new poll suggests 65% of people expect the justices to overturn the ban. just 25% of people expect existing bans to stand. the nonpartisan public religion research institute did the poll. a man thrown to the bottom of a ravine after his dirt bike crashed was able to survive 24 hours in the wilderness of washington state. thanks in part to his iphone charger. the former navy s.e.a.l. medic set off on a treasure hunt on a

>> matthew faces life in prison when he is sentenced in october. he'll be back in court later this month on murder charges for the death of uva student hannah graham. feminist groups say they'll take more legal action against the university of mary washington if it doesn't do anything to stop threats against the female students. this is according to "the free lance-star." the group filed a title ix claim last month, saying that people posted threatening messages on an app. the president said he couldn't disable that because it would violate students' right to free speech. iowa's straw poll was a time honored tradition, and now the iowa republican party is rethinking it. critics say it's a costly side show and party officials say they're discussionng it on a conference call tomorrow. already mike huckabee, jeb bush and lindsey graham plan to skip the event. new this morning if you

drive an acura, listen up. the company is recalling two of the suvs because of brake problems. the automatic brakes are mistaking guardrails on the side of the road for hazards in front of the car. that slows the car down automatically and risks a collision. we're talking about 48,000 vehicles. the models are on your screen. the mdx and the rlx from 2014 and 2015. acura says dealers will fix the issue. metro doesn't want to give riders the option of paper or plastic anymore. documents from the transit agency show that they want to eliminate paper fare cards by early next year. and make everyone use the plastic smart trip cards. most of you have made that transition, but still about 30000 of you out there using those paper cards still every day. metro is also considering a system that also lets you pay fares with your smartphone. if you see a goat wandering through our your neighborhood, we'd like to hear from you. take a look.

new details about the mansion murder case in d.c. news4 obtained a warrant that says investigators found a bloodied baseball bat in the savopoulos' family burned home. the warrant also says that savvas savopoulos hadder injuries to the back of the head. someone killed the family and the housekeeper last month. officers arrested daron wint and believe there are others involved in this case. a junior agent with the secret service is accused of flirting with a young woman while he was supposed to be on duty outside of an event attend by the first lady. this is last month. the agent apparently asked for the woman's phone number, later

i'm molette green on the scene of a deadly accident here in prince george's county. take a look behind me. just about ten minutes ago, the crashed up car was towed away. we saw that and firefighters right now are behind me cleaning up what is left of this scene. the road is expected to reopen in just minutes. we have been here for just about an hour and when we got here we saw the crashed car upside down on the side of the road. the coroner left a short while ago. we can tell you that a male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. police tell us that the driver left the roadway, hit a pole and this happened just before 2:00 a.m. this morning. again, old alexandria ferry road.

time i thought he was a u.s. marshal. >> when fitzgerald watched the video he realized it was a delaware state police officer. news4's shomari stone reached out on the state police and they say they're aware of this video. news4 -- they told news4 they're worried about trying to get around on "l" street. as we head into summer many of you are worried about safety. officers who were ready to serve overtime were told they couldn't do it. police don't want to comment on the budget matter and county council vice chair said this no overtime order has not come from his office. >> there's a large overtime budget already in the police and all of our public safety agencies. so at this point i don't see any reason for any concern with regard to public safety
