around 90. hottest temperatures in washington. mid 90s. and as well as from fredericksburg over to culpepper an warrenton. a nice breeze off the bay. low 70s. in the 80s near the waters and then temperatures up around 90 degrees by mid to late afternoon. next weather and traffic on the 1s coming up at 6:11. your bus stop forecast for this thursday. melissa, what's happening on the roads? >> well, at this point, actually a brand new issue that popped up. right now we're hearing that that we may have a lane blocked here, inner loop of g.w. parkway. we had a report of a car and police activity. just a warning. again, this is where we're sending chopper 4 to northbo bridge road is shut down at north street. a car versus a motorcycle. darnestown, a blocked tree is blocking some lanes. prince george's county is looking good. so is 66 and 95. 66 out of leesburg and manassas, about 44 miles an hour. thanks melissa 6:02.

tight and cramped, those are some ways to describe how your metro ride might be today. metro pulled cars off the track for a safety inspection. news4's megan mcgrath is talking to riders and getting their reaction after learning that some doors were opening while the trains were in motion. megan? >> reporter: well, eun we have moved down to the platform here at the west falls church metro station. a train pulled out seconds ago here. so as you can see it's pretty quiet, but it's very early in the commute. we are expecting things to get very, very crowded later on this morning because metro has taken 100 of the 4000 series cars out of service so they can do safety inspections. here's why. take a look at this video. this was shot by a passenger using their cell phone. you can see the doors to the 4000 series car are open. they have been having a problem with those doors opening unexpectedly. you can see here that the train is actually in motion going through a tunnel. so obviously some safety concerns there.

and that has prompted metro to take 100 of these 4000 series cars out of series so that i can make repairs if necessary. so we are expecting crowded conditions along the rails here today, friday and through the weekend. they are not going to be able to run as many eight-car trains because they're down by these 100 cars. they're running six-car trains instead. so we're expecting some crowded conditions on the lines and that's going to be the case for several days. now, we'll keep an eye on things. talking to commuters and passengers and in fact spoke to one woman this morning and she said it doesn't seem to be a problem, but she's concerned about her commute home tonight. >> well, this is a very popular station, so it will be really felt here probably at the core of rush hour i would say. certainly going to be more difficult. >> reporter: so red blue,

orange and green lines, be prepared. fewer eight-car trains. it's going to get crowded. back to you in the studio. >> thank you megan. new this morning, two hikers are safe after u.s. park police rescued them near the potomac river. the rock climbers got on to the island, but could not get back because it was too dark. they were stranded on some rock. montgomery county fire crews guided them to a boat and brought them to safety. no one was hurt. that's a flurry of action in upstate new york as the search for two escaped prisoners expands overnight. police closed off route 374 near clinton prison. escapees richard matt and david sweat may have told someone they wanted to escape to vermont. police in several areas of vermont are now helping with that search. they have also put up billboards. check them out. police want residents to keep an eye out for trespassers in barns or seasonal homes but don't want anyone approaching the two convicted murderers.

the two men used power tools to escape and now officials say they're interrogating a woman who worked at this prison. investigators say joyce mitchell was a seamstress at the tailor shop where they worked and she befriended them. the investigators want know how they got access to the power tools and then they climbed out of the manhole. investigators say they received hundreds of tips. coming up a little later in the hour we'll have a live report from nbc's miguel almaguer on how police think the men are traveling. 6:05. d.c. prosecutors are expected to drop a criminal came against greg anthony. he was arrested for soliciting a prostitute back in january. cbs suspended him from the air and prosecutors agreed to dismiss the case if anthony performed 32 hours of community service over the last four months. a man is waking up in custody this morning accused of a deadly stabbing in montgomery

county. residents in a silver spring apartment complex came home to the homicide investigation in their parking lot last night. police say a man stabbed another man outside of the woodlake apartments. the victim died at the hospital. police have not revealed the men's names but say they did know each other. prosecutors have started to call witnesses in the controversial police shooting kain fairfax county. grand jury is deciding whether to prosecute adam torres in the shooting. officers showed up for the calls of a domestic dispute and torres claims geer moved his hands to his waist as if to grab a weapon and that's when he shot him. others say his hands were near his head. lawmakers and congress are working to prevent d.c. from regulating pot. the new draft spending bill includes a measure to keep the city from spending money to enact the legal marijuana law.

that means the district can't tax or sell pot. however the drug is still legal for personal use in your home. and right now, still looking at a potential issue in fairfax. we'll have details on this one coming up. chopper headed to the scene. a new study released in the last few hours putting the president is on -- putting the spotlight on underaged drinking. and a quick-thinking police officer's actions that helped save the life of a baby girl. your time is 6:07.

than buckle on impact. the company has to pay $663 million in damages and penalties. police officers save lives every day, but one albuquerque officer's actions are touching. last month, the officer responded to a call for an unresponsive 7-month-old baby girl. that baby was blue and not breathing. he immediately started to give her cpr as she lay motionless in her grandmother's arms. the whole thing was call on the officer's body camera. that's what you're looking at here. after two breaths and blowing in her face, the baby started to come back alive again. started breathing again. the officer held that baby girl until paramedics arrived. just to make sure she was okay. can you imagine? the family members were standing by watching all of this. the officers saying it was like autopilot. he kicked in naturally knew what to do.

new pictures coming in to our newsroom from nepal this morning. a landslide hit while people were sleeping. it buried six villages in the northeast where it is very mountainous as you can see is there. these photos are just in from the nepalese officials. we are getting information on casualties. 15 people are dead. 12 perhaps are believed to be missing. but it's hard to know exactly how many because of how remote this area is. nepal is still recovering from earthquakes in may and april that killed more than 8,000 people. >> thanks, kristin. coming up to the second

nonetheless he was accused of sexual assault for the 2005 attack on a woman in fairfax. >> the dna pretty much sold it. >> did you think you'd go in the grand jury convicting him? >> i personally, yeah. >> matthew faces life in prison when he's sentenced in october. he'll be back in court later this month on murder charges for the death of uva student hannah graham. that's a warning if you bank in columbia, maryland. howard county police say someone installed an atm skimming device at the federal credit union. a caller said that the card scanner appeared suspicious and it was loose. it was a skimming device that was attached to the machine with tape. a man hit by a car on wisconsin avenue remains in serious condition this morning. this happened during rush hour last night. the man was in a cross walk near van ness street when he was hit.

the driver who hit him stayed on the scene. d.c. police major crash unit were on the scene for several hours trying to figure out how this happened. now we are hearing the side of the story of the former texas officer seen in this disturbing video. david casebolt is seen wrestling that teenage girl to the ground and pulling his gun out on a group of teens. he apologized through his lawyer yesterday. his lawyer said he was not targeting minorities outside of a pool party in a dallas suburb, but rather he was distraught after responding to two suicide calls earlier last friday. >> he does recognize that his emotions got the best of him. and that the prior suicide calls put him in an emotional place. that he would prefer not to have been in when responding to this call. >> the attorney for the 15-year-old girl in the video believes excessive force violated the girl's civil rights. the officer resigned from the

mckinney police department tuesday night. activists are demanding prosecutors charge him. 6:19. today the irs will introduce a new initiative to protect you from having your identity stolen. we don't know the details of the plan just yet, but the agency says it will tell us what it's doing in a news conference this afternoon. we'll send you a push alert to your nbc washington app for that. soon, d.c. could have a new way to crack down on synthetic drugs. mayor muriel bowser proposed a new bill to give cathy lanier the power to temporarily shut down stores that sell synthetic drugs like scooby snacks around bizarre-o. volleyball players, listen up. if you play at west potomac park on the mall there are some new rules. you can't book in advance of seven days. not all the courts will be available to reserve. four courts will be used on a

spots, no major incidents. the earlier crash there of course has cleared out of the way. beltway at river, inner and outer loop is flowing just fine. hopefully chopper 4 will be over the scene in a couple of minutes. a study that shows fewer underaged people are drinking in the u.s. the substance abuse and mental health administration says the drinking dropped between 2002 and 2013. the agency says at least 39% of those in the older group, 18 to 20-year-olds say they binge drink. in "news4 your health" a warning about a popular heart burn medicine. new research shows there's a link between drugs with proton pump inhibitors and heart attacks. researchers recommend you don't

stop taking your heart burn medication until you talk to your doctor. constant movement that's so common in kids with adhd may help them in school. physical activity like bouncing on a ball chair or even chewing gum seems to allow the children to focus on difficult tasks. this is according to research from the university of california davis mind institute. experts say teachers may want to allow the kids to fidget a bit. a man's iphone helped save his life after he crashed in the middle of nowhere out in washington state. the navy s.e.a.l. medic was on a treasure hunt on his dirt bike. he crashed it in a remote area and fell into the bottom of a ravine. the man then created a splint for his leg using sticks shoelaces and his iphone charging cord. he tried to climb up to the road, but his injuries proved too much. >> i knew that it was a really, really dire situation. after being that alone for that long. >> well after a long painful

ahead. that sun is going to be working it today. the sun makes its way up this morning. some of you are already dealing with temperatures in the 70s as we brace for the hottest day we have seen this year. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here now with the highs you will see where you live. good morning, tom. >> yeah, hottest day so far. likely by later this afternoon, the humidity beginning to creep up. we have fog forming around the eastern shore. county by county highs around the metro area, prince george's in the low 90s. mid 90s much of fairfax county. and across northern virginia, from loudoun through prince william, spotsylvania culpepper and orange, they're in the low to mid 90s. southern maryland right near the bay in calvert, anne arundel, st. mary's should be in the 80s. but southern, prince george's, into the northern nehe low to mid 90s there.

counties up near the pennsylvania border, pan handle of west virginia, allegany should be around 90 degrees. near 90 out in the mountains, not much relief there. there's a small chance of a thundershower in shenandoah valley as well. a look at your drive time forecast in ten minutes. now melissa has a look at a big problem on 95. >> breaking nice right now. chopper 4 got over the scene here. maryland at 95. we were going for one crash and we have found three. two crashes southbound there. maryland 95 and one in the northbound lane. so chopper kind of panning across for us there. thank you very much for that chopper 4. but maryland 95 near 198, we have several different crashes here. two southbound and one northbound. we are seeing almost six miles worth of backups in the southbound lanes. no doubt we'll get some northbound backups as well. take a look at that.

if you're hurt or sick or dealing with a domestic violence case. police in prince george's county said old alexandria ferry road is closed a frfter a fatal crash. a driver left the road and struck the pole and the road remains closed thisin both directions. new grim details about the mansion murder case in d.c. news4 obtained a warrant that says investigators found a bloody baseball bat in the savopoulos' family's burned home. savvas savopoulos had injuries to the back of his head. they were all killed inside that mansion last month. officers arrested daron wint and believe there are other suspects in this case. we also learned new information about daron wint in a report you saw first on news4. our megan fitzgerald read court

records that says his former girlfriend took out a stay away order. wint had attacked her and held her against her will. a legal expert said it's possible those claims could become relevant in the quadruple murder case. a junior agent with the u.s. secret service has been placed on administrative leave. he is accused of flirting with a young woman while he was supposed to be on duty outside of an en't have at tenned by -- event attended by the first lady last month. later, when he was not on duty he sent sexually suggestive text to her. the department of homeland security and secret service are now investigating. prince george's county police are cutting back on overtime as we head into summer. it seems many of you are worried about your safety. officers scheduled to serve overtime were told they couldn't do it. police didn't want to comment on a budget matter. county officials said this no overtime order is not coming

from their office. public safety overtime in the county costs on average between $10 million to $15 million each year. and many of you are left wondering whether you can now count on the officers to be there when you need them. >> although it's still under investigation we are trying to lock down how much time passed from when the -- >> a retired fire chief will take over the reins in hagerstown. steve luer retire last year from the county. he will take over for chief dietrich. luer was selected from a pool of -- was selected in a pool of candidates who applied through a nationwide search. dietrich will retire at the end of the month. the purple line has some new support. maryland's transportation secretary is backing the project as long as the price tag is cut. pete rahn recommended the boss governor larry hogan approve the light rail project.

the metro tracks. megan mcgrath explains why a safety inspection is to blame. what's going on there? >> reporter: well, they're operating with 100 fewer cars than normal. as you can see we're here on the platform of the west falls church metro station. the folks are lining up here. still early in the day, not yet 7:00. so we are not seeing overcrowding conditions yet. everyone on this train here that's just pulled into the station all these folks have seats. we're not seeing anybody standing, but as the day progresses we are expecting that to change. basically, look at this video. here is the problem. the 4000 series, these are an older type of rail car, they have been having problems with the doors opening unexpectedly. you can see this video was taken by a passenger. and the train is actually moving through a tunnel when those doors opened. obviously, a safety concern so metro has made the decision to pull 100 cars out of service so that they can be inspected.

if repairs are needed they'll go the repairs. today through the weekend those cars are going to be out of service. what that means is they'll be operating fewer eight-car trains. they're going with six-car trains. that means things could get crowded out there. we did speak to a couple of passengers this morning and they say leaving early seems to be the trick. so far so good. we'll keep an eye on it though because things could get tight on the trains later on in the morning. back to you in the studio. >> thank you, megan. now let's get the latest on a developing story out of new york. police are expanding their search for two convicted murderers who broke out of a prison over the weekend. residents of new york and now vermont are very on edge. nbc's miguel almaguer is there tracking the very latest. good morning, miguel. >> reporter: good morning. it was a tip that led investigators to this area behind me late last night and over the last couple of minutes we have seen a stepped up police presence. officers in armed vehicles headed out the hills behind me. they're only saying that a tip

claim. tennessee now testing people for a rare form of tuberculosis. they say an infected woman may have come into contact with people in missouri, illinois and tennessee before being diagnosed. doctors are treating her in nih here in d.c. the tennessee health department believes fewer than fen people were exposed. apple is making changes that could protect your proivacy. cnbc's landon dowdy has more. >> good morning to you. apple paving the way for iphone users to block online ads when they use the safari web browser. the changes are planned for ios 9, for the iphone and the ipad. it will be rolled out later this year. they include a feature to block cookies and other content.

into the low to mid 90s much of the metro area. near 90 in the rural areas. that's by 3:00 or 4:00. by 5:00 beginning to drop back down again. then the mid 70s by dawn on friday. a very humid day tomorrow. low 90s. and a chance of an isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon. a greater chance of some afternoon storms on saturday. when we get to up around 90 degrees and still very humid. then finally an end to the heat wave on sunday. sunday is the best day of the weekend. lower humidity returns. highs reaching the 80s with lots of sun. more of the same on monday. then it gets more humid again as we get into tuesday and wednesday next week. chance of afternoon storms, both of those days be by the afternoon. >> it's now 6:54. if you drive an acura, take a listen. the company is recalling two of the suvs because of brake problems. the automatic brakes are mistaking guardrails on the side of the road for hazards in front of the car.
