"news4 today" continues at 5:00 a.m. >> "news4 today" starts now. >> it is 5:00 a.m. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> i'm eun yang. we are staying on top of two big stories starting with our heat wave. at 5:00 a.m. temperatures range between the high 60s and mid 70s. 77 already in washington, you can feel it, it's humid and muggy out there. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein with how far and how quickly those temperatures will climb today. but we begin with breaking news on the roads, an accident at suitland parkway and firth sterling. melissa mollet has more. >> good morning. right now, again, this breaking news here in the district. still a problem there. suitland parkway at firth sterling avenue. right now police are pushing you on to firth sterling there. you can take a right and get on to the freeway that way. i just talked to megan mcgrath.

she saying that's what they're allowing at this point this morning. 29, 95 b.w. parkway, into and out of town, don't have any major problems there. wide look at the beltway, also looking quite good right now. 270 at montrose road, rolling along nicely too. don't have any problems on 66. don't have any problems on 95 in maryland or in virginia. overall, prince george's county actually looking good right now. suitland parkway again at firth sterling, still partially shut down there. megan mcgrath is on the scene for us at this point this morning. she'll tell us more about this work around. megan? >> reporter: well, melissa, if you take a look behind me you can see the two vehicles, the two cars that are involved in this accident. and just a tremendous amount of damage done here. we have one person in critical condition. as you can see we have this entire intersection, suitland parkway and first sterling closed in southeast washington. at this point, the inbound of suitland parkway is what we're concerned about. they're allowing traffic to go

to firth sterling and then they force you to take a right-hand turn. you can go up on 295 and head downtown or go on to pennsylvania avenue from down there. you are not allowed over the douglas bridge. you have to take the right at firth sterling. also outbound traffic is being detoured at first sterling as well. you have to take the right and go through the neighborhood. go through berry farms to get around the accident scene. not sure how long this is going to be in place. we're starting to see traffic volume build at this point. we don't have a large delay at this point because it's still pretty early. but obviously if this continues to be the case for much longer we are going to see significant delays for people heading in from prince george's county on suitland parkway. you're going on the detoured at firth sterling. at the moment, douglas bridge is out of the mix in terms of river crossing. back to you guys in the studio. >> all right megan mcgrath, thank you. coming up on three minutes after the hour. we are looking at a heat wave for much of the region right

now. tom kierein is in the weather center. >> we have a heat advisory for the d.c. metro area including washington, alexandria and arlington for this afternoon. scorching sun, high humidity. there's a heat illness risk with extended exposure. you could be risking heat exhaustion or heat stroke. reduce outdoor activities. drink plenty of water or take frequent breaks. it will feel like near 100 degrees. and then on saturday the feels like temperature in mid 90s and then the low 90s for the heat index on sunday. oppressive humidity today. and we'll stay oppressive as well tomorrow. then sunday, humidity drops a little bit, but still rather sticky. temperatures right now when you head out the door, fairly comfortable. in the low to mid 70s in the metro area nearby suburbs, upper 70s in washington. mid 70s around the chesapeake bay. next weather and traffic on the 1s, your drive time forecast. things are back to normal

for your morning commute on the b.w. parkway. chopper 4 was over this traffic mess last night. u.s. park police tell us the delays were a result of a shooting on 450. someone shot two people, not sure how badly they were hurt. crews closed northbound lanes between route 50 and the beltway. 5:04 now. we expect to hear from the university of virginia student whose bloody arrest video got a lot of attention. marquise johnson will be back in court today and all charges will be dropped. the case was dropped yesterday after reviewing the state police investigation. alcoholic beverage control officers arrested him back in march outside a charlottesville pub. his lawyer accused them of excessive force. a 19-year-old from virginia overdosed on a party drug inside a d.c. music venue. victoria callahan went to a concert to celebrate her

birthday on wednesday. during the concert she collapsed. paramedics rushed her to medstar washington hospital but she died thursday morning. the coastal carolina university student was under the influence of molly. molly is a form of mdma which is the main ingredient in the drug ecstasy. in 2013, a uva student also died after taking molly at echostage. we are learning this morning that a d.c. teacher charged with sexual abuse will remain in jail. police say giovanni pena inappropriately touched an 11-year-old boy during the 2013-14 school year. pena taught at oyster-adams bilingual school northwest. pena waived his right to the preliminary hearing. that case may now head to the grand jury. i'm kristin wright at the live desk putting together information we're getting on malaysia airlines flight 148. it had to make an emergency landing today. it was flying from melbourne, australia to kuala lumpur but

had to turn around and go back to the airport in australia. a reporter there tweeted this picture. it shows the plane just sitting. it did land safely in melbourne. 300 passengers on board we're told. right now, malaysia airlines said it's inspecting the plane but has not found the problem just yet. eun? >> thank you, kristin. it's 5:06. a union representing federal workers claims a massive data breach is even worse than the obama administration will admit. the union says personal data and social security numbers for every federal worker. but the office of personnel management said that's not true. opm says a little more than 4 million active and former federal workers may have had their information compromised. we continue following a developing story out of upstate new york where the manhunt continues for two escaped prisoners. the latest on the search and the latest on the woman who was supposed to be the get away driver. and the co-pilot who intentionally downed a

welcome back at 5:09. more dominos are falling in the world of professional soccer. the senate in paraguy has voted to repeal a law that gave immunity to the soccer confederation. it comes as a major scandal is

engulfing fifa. one of the fifa executives is from paraguy and lobbied in the 1990s to make soccer officials exempt from legal intervention. the co-pilot accused of crashing a german flight researched how to get ahold of deadly drugs and he visited 41 doctors in just five years. as the final victims of the crash are headed to the final resting places it's still not clear why andreas lubitz took down that flight. his family said he was spiraling to a mental disaster. some doctors told prosecutes they thought lubitz was too unstable to fly. today the criminal inquiry opened into whether germanwings or lufthansa are liable. coming up on 11 after 5:00 now. look at your weather and traffic on the 1s. get ready for a heat wave. >> tom kierein here now with details. what's going on out there? >> good morning. it's a pleasant morning now. just a little bit of a haze in the air. no travel problems weather wise

breaking news now in the investigation into the alleged tapping of the german chancellor's cell phone by the nsa. german prosecutors saying right now they don't have enough evidence to prove the u.s. was spying on angela merkel. they have closed their investigation. the alleged monitoring of the phone merkel used for government business strained relations between germany and the u.s. prosecutors in germany started

this investigation a year ago and it's now over. >> thanks kristin. grocery store delivery truck hit and killed a pedestrian in the district. this happened at the intersection of wisconsin avenue and calvert street yesterday evening. we're still working to find out how that peapod truck hit the woman. police shut down part of the road during their investigation. so far, no charges against the truck's driver. 5:16. investigators believe there's reason to believe that the two inmates who escaped last week are close by the prison and reports that the woman who may have helped the inmates was previously investigated for an improper relationship with one of them. sources familiar with the investigation says mitchell told authorities she thought one of them without in love with her. her son defended her. >> she's not the kind of person who's going to risk her life or

other people's lives to let these guys escape from prison. >> it appears mitchell was supposed to be behind the wheel of a get away car when the convicts escaped from the manhole. sources close to the investigation say she got cold feet and checked into the hospital with a panic attack. starting today you can no longer smoke e-cigarettes in montgomery county. a new law bans the use of e-cigarettes in any public places that bans regular smoking. it passed the county council last march. they say it can cause young people to use real cigarettes. and paid sick days are going to nearly 100,000 residents. it was voted yesterday in the favor and now it goes to the full council later this month. employers would have to give you up to seven full days of paid sick leave per year. in "news4 your health" your children are not drinking enough water and that could affect their performance in the

classroom. that's according to a new study from harvard. nearly a quarter of kids surveyed said they don't drink plain water at all. black kids were at a high risk for dehydration and boys drank less water than girls. the cdc is concerned about the rise of synthetic drug use. the number of calls to poison control centers about bad reactions to drugs like spice and k-2 were more or less steady in the first half of 2014. this year the calls are up 229%. 15 deaths have also been connected to the drugs. d.c. reported at least 12 hospitalizations linked to synthetic marijuana since last week. there's a push to allow police to shut down the stores that sell the synthetic drugs. there's a new study that shows sleeping pills cause you problems behind the wheels. it nearly doubles the risk of vehicle accidents among the

users. analyzing driving records the study finds that rest aroll increases the risk by 27%. desyrel sees a 91% jump. and ambien tops them all at 121%. >> they increase your risk because they impair your judgment and reaction time. not just a risk to them if they're out driving but also to each and every one of us on the road with people who are taking these medications. >> two years ago the fda recommended that women take lower doses of ambien because they metabolize the drug more slowly than men. all right. already 78 in the city, a heat index, humidity factored in there. >> as soon as you walk out the door, you're what it with a wall of haze. a live look outside, 76 already. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein tracking the forecast for us. i don't think it's getting any

better, is it? >> no, you can see the summer haze hanging in the sky on this friday morning. a live view from the city camera. first pink glow of this day, now showing up on the eastern horizon. here in the storm team 4 weather center, i have been tracking this humidity that's been building overnight. and it is going to be oppressive by later this afternoon. right now, fairly pleasant as you head out the door. a few high clouds passing over. temperatures are near 70. shenandoah valley in the 60s out in the mountains of western maryland and west virginia. nearby suburbs, low 70s's. in the district, upper 70s. mid and upper 70s around the bay and southern maryland and northern neck. by 7:00 still upper 70s. and then by 11:00 into the mid 80s this morning. werea to this afternoon. a risk of heat stroke or heat

months old and 2 years old. she worked as clerk inside the store. customers had been bringing flowers to the store in her memory. a cleveland judge says there is enough evidence to charge two white police officers in the shooting death of a 12-year-old african-american boy. however, a grand jury will make that final decision. police shot and killed tamir he was holding a pellet gun that the police said looked like the real thing. it sparked protests around the country. the grand jury continues the investigation. metro transit police arrested arrested the man caught on video brutally attacking another man. officers say 52-year-old william nelson is on cell phone video punching a man for several minutes. that fight happened around 1:00 a.m. on sunday. police spoke to both men when they got off the train at the time. neither wanted to press charges but police arrested nelson yesterday. metro could make you late

for work this morning. it's the cost you will pay for upgrades. power cables need new protective sleeves that would prevent equipment from creating smoke or catching fire. metro says you can expect longer wait times, single tracking during the day and possibly during rush hour. >> we need to convince them that these actions even though they're painful for periods of time, that the system is continually getting safer. >> the ntsb has been investigating since a woman died and dozens were sickened in a smoke incident in l'enfant plaza. maureen mcdonnell has filed the final brief in her appeals in the public corruption conviction. her lawyers insist the conviction only happened because the court used an overly broad definition of the bribery law. she and her husband were found guilty in taking gifts for

political favors. let's check in with kristin wright at the live desk. >> a country music singer has been killed in a gunfight with a bounty hunter trying to detain him. this is randy howard here performing in 2006. he was shot tuesday in tennessee. investigators say the bounty hunter showed up at howard's home to take him into custody for missing a court appearance related to dui and possession of drug aphernalia. howard opened fire. the bounty hunter fired back and howard was killed. he performed alongside willie nelson at times in his career. eun? >> thank you kristin. getting around the national mall is about to get a lot easier. starting sunday the d.c. circulator system will add a new route and that will take riders from union station to any one of 15 stops around the mall. you can get off the bus, just steps away from sites including the capitol the smithsonian

that inbound traffic cannot access the douglas bridge right now because of this crash. prince george's county overall actually looking quite good this morning. no major problems. same thing when you look at 270. northbound and southbound. that earlier construction has cleared. 66 at nutley street east and west rolling along nicely. again megan mcgrath live on the scene for us this morning. megan this is a pretty serious accident there. >> reporter: yeah. very serious accident. if you take a look behind me you can see the damage done to the two cars here. there's been a couple of developments since we last spoke to you. first of all, you can see the tow trucks are here on the scene. they're beginning the work of taking the two cars and loading them up on the tow trucks and opening up the roadway here. they're not -- they're just starting that process right now. so we still have the closure but hopefully it won't be too much longer because obviously this is going to be a major, major choke point for traffic this morning. we have got suitland parkway

heat wave we have to deal with over the next few days. >> i want just looks hot. we have some pink brush stroke clouds on the eastern horizon. sunshine in about ten minutes and temperatures right now are mild and rather muggy. we're in the low to mid 70s. right in washington, mid to upper 70s. in the mid to upper 70s around the bay. cooler in the shenandoah valley is and the mountains. it's in the 60s in many locations. we don't have any rain in the vicinity, but later on today we can get showers or thundershowers. here is new model timing on that. as of noontime, nothing is popping up but around 2:00, thunderstorms in shenandoah valley tracking farther to the east and coming into our western suburbs and east of the blue ridge by 4:00 or 5:00. by 6:00 they drift farther south near fredericksburg. and anything developing this afternoon will begin to break up

overnight tonight. next weather and traffic on the 1s, coming up at 5:41. your bus stop forecast, what to wear on this steamy friday. back to you. >> thank you. it's 5:33. new details about evidence collected from the d.c. mansion murder scene. a search warrant reveals that police found a bloody bat inside that home on wood lawn drive in northwest. the bat was discovered in a bedroom where a victim was found needing cpr. the warrant says that savvas savopoulos was found with trauma to his back of his head and amy savopoulos had lacerations to her throat and head. and police also collected matches and a garage door opener from the home. >> sometimes we can get what we call touch dna. whenever you and i touch something, we can leave a minute sample of our dna. that could be anywhere from a pizza box to a victim's neck. >> right now, daron wint is the only person charged with the murders of the savopoulos family

and their housekeeper. just in new developments in a case from the 1970s. the order delaying the release for the last of the angola three prisoners is set to expire today. a federal judge ruled that albert woodsox must be released immediately. but an appeal court stayed that release while deciding whether to accept the state's appeal. that stay expires today. he spent decades in solitary confinement after the killing of louisiana state penitentiary guard brent miller in 1972. louisiana's attorney general wants a third trial for woodsox calling him the most dangerous person on the planet. eun? >> kristin wright, thank you. 5:35 right now. defense attorneys for the six baltimore police officers charged in freddie gray's death want to know why the state is coming after their client. the attorneys asked for clarification of the second degree depraved heart murder and manslaughter charges. state's attorney marilyn mosby

filed new court documents but did not provide any new information on how her office settled on those charges. mosby's office has tried to keep that information out of the public even seeking a gag order in the case. a judge denied that request. freddie gray died in april after suffering a severe spinal cord injury in police custody. a rhode island man due in federal court in connection with a foiled terror plot in boston. the fbi arrested nicholas ravinsky last night. it led members of a terrorism task force to shoot and kill usaama rahim last week. the fbi says rahim and another man planned to behead police officers. a virginia teen headed to prison, another is being charged in a newly revealed terror plot. 17-year-old ali shukri amin pleaded guilty to providing material support to isis. prosecutors say amin helped his schoolmate reza niknejad travel to syria.

two d.c. police officers could have the district more than $200,000 for enrollment fraud.

lieutenant alan hill and sergeant candace hill claim that they lived in the district and sent their children to d.c. public schools between 2003 and 2013. over that ten-year period the hills actually lived in maryland and virginia. district law says non-residents have to pay for each student attending a d.c. public school. attorney general karl racine filed charges and asked for $234,000 in unpaid tuition plus penalties. we now know why a delaware state trooper was parked in a bike lane in the district. he was protecting the governor of delaware. the suv was caught blocking that lane on "l" street northwest tuesday morning. the cyclist was calling to report it when he faced an awkward confrontation. >> there's a vehicle blocking the traffic right here -- >> hey, pay attention. >> the delaware governor's office says the trooper was

today." >> maryland officials may be taking sides of the maryland couple under fire for letting their children walk home alone. this is all related to free range parenting. molette green is in silver spring now. telling us about the new policy changes. molette? >> reporter: eun, good morning. yeah, the family at the center of what has become a national debate lives just a couple of blocks down that way from this silver spring park. today, we expect to get clarification, a clear cut position from child protective services about so-called free range parenting. basically allowing your children to walk or play alone. essentially saying it is not considered neglect. it is a parenting choice. now they're saying this is not a new position. this is offering additional clarification. take a look at this statement now from the maryland department of human resources. we see our role as responding when a child is harmed or at risk of significant harm.

now, when all of this blew up i had a chance to sit down with the meitiv family. the mom and the 10-year-old son. they strongly believe that children are at more risk, greater risk, by just riding in a car than walking home alone from a playground like this. we're live this morning in silver spring. back to you. >> i thinkthanks, molette. and an alexandria man is charged with setting fire to his infant son's crib. they failed to report five fires at the fox chase complex. one of the fires involved the intentional ignition of a baby's crib mattress while the infant was asleep. tikrit told the investigators he believed that ghosts started the fires and that his apartment is haunted. burglaries along one of the busiest streets in d.c. are on the rise right now. it's called 16th street heights in northwest. and in the most recent incidents, thieves ransacked a
