>> news4 at 11 starts now. >> and darcy spencer has the latest on the incident that happened in prince george's county. darcy? i think we're having some technical difficulties. we apologize for that. >> reporter: a train that overturned at a popular prince george's county park. investigators are focusing on the train operator and the mechanics of the ride as they try to figure out what caused the accident that sent 21 people mostly children to the hospital. >> the driver said the police officer he tried to stop the train, right. but the brake is gone. >> reporter: tomas hernandez says his wife daughter, and four grandchildren were on the ride at the cosca park in clinton when the main car derailed and rolled on the paved

pathway. >> for now everybody i think is okay. >> reporter: of the 21 people who were hurt, only three or four were adults. a witness tells news4 one of the parents punched the operator of the train in the face. the operator was among those who were transported. >> we were just sitting here having a cookout and all of the sudden we heard a real huge explosion. and i walked down there and saw the train toppled over. >> i seen a big gash a big knot on her head. >> reporter: she is a medical technician. she comforted that little girl until medics arrived. >> she was able to tell me herself, i was on the train, and the train was going zigzag and i flipped over and fell. i feel like i hit a tree. >> reporter: anthony barnes came here with a friend and their sons just arrived to the train but it was closed. >> it was delayed. so i guess it was a promising delay for us that occurred. it could have been us. >> reporter: he felt very fortunate that he wasn't there. parents we spoke to say they want to know a lot more about

what happened and why before they'll allow their children to go back on that ride. the good news is it appears that there were no serious injuries. erica? >> darscydarcy thanks so very much. a woman pulled from a swimming pool in camp springs. firefighters performed cpr but could not save the man's life. a medical examiner's report will give us more details on exactly what happened there. we have learned new details about a parking lot brawl that turned deadfully fredericksburg. investigators say a large fight broke out outside the greenbriar shopping center, and someone stabbed three people. a man from georgia and a man from hampton, virginia died at the hospital. a third victim is expected to survive. police have been following leads all day, but so far no suspects in custody. traffic was backed up on the gw parkway this evening as crews tried to rescue someone who went over an embankment.

firefighters were able to get to victim by boat and they were immediately taken to shore to be checked out by a medic. no word how that person went over the embankment. d.c. police are investigating a deadly shooting near the brentwood recreation center in northeast washington. when officers got to the scene on 15th street last night, they found 44-year-old donald bush of upper marlboro dead. right now no suspects in custody. this tree came crashing down in arlington tonight just missing several cars parked a few feet away. this damage is one vivid example of the intensity from some of the storms that we saw tonight. but how are things right now on the radar? storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal joins us live. mel. >> in our immediate area we are dry, but i'm keeping a close eye on thunderstorm activity in pennsylvania up around the pittsburgh area. this activity moving toward the

east-southeast, and it's going to continue to sink into our area during the overnight and morning hours. so timing with future weather early tomorrow morning. you could be dealing with some rain showers for that commute. 2:00 a.m. some showers north of washington. 6:00 a.m. more of the same. elsewhere cloudy, humid and balmy. notice at 8:00 a.m. showers in loudoun, prince georges and howard and montgomery counties. look at temperatures tomorrow morning. 7:00 a.m., we're already at 78 degrees. by 10:00 a.m., we're in the mid-80s. it's hot and humid with thunderstorms in the forecast for the afternoon and evening hours. erica, i'm going to have more on the thunderstorms coming up in about 10 minutes. >> thanks amelia. police and investigators in fairfax county are trying to figure out what happened to a woman found floating in lake huntsman in springfield. rescue crews recovered her body after a kayaker spotted it this morning. no word on who she was, and it's too early to tell how she ended up in the water.

things are back to normal right now on metro's red line after problems on both saturday and sunday. this morning service suspended service i should say between cleveland park and dupont circle due to fire department activity. riders experienced delays as metro single track between van ness and dupont circle. and on saturday an arc insulator forced metro to single track until crews fixed that problem. nine days and counting, and still no sign of those convicted killers who broke out of prison in upstate new york with no new leads. police investigators say they could be in mexico by now. as nbc's miguel almaguer reports, some rattled residents who live near the prison are sleeping in shifts in their own homes. >> reporter: facing eight years in prison authorities say joyce mitchell did much more than just sneak various tools into this maximum security facility. she worked for weeks say investigators with david sweat

and richard matt on their escape. what kind of relationship would you describe it as between them? >> unusual. >> reporter: district attorney andrew wiley says mitchell became involved with the convicted killers in 2013 slowly learning of their planned prison break agreeing to be their getaway driver and planning a midnight rendezvous at this power plant after the duo dug their way to prison. >> so was her plan to go on the run and move on with them? >> it appears that way. it appears that way based on her statements. and i think at the last moment on friday afternoon, or friday evening, she build a out. >> reporter: the d.a. says mitchell was to drive seven hours towards an unknown possibly wooded location where they would need an off-road vehicle. the day of the escape mitchell had a panic attack. a no-show at the power plant because she didn't want to hurt

her husband says the district attorney. the manhunt for sweat and matt is now day nine. the air operation has been launched around the clock. using infrared. during the day several spotters on the choppers. an army of 800 searching for two who could be long gone. >> we don't know if they are still in the immediate area. or if they are in mexico by now. >> how big are the woods back here? >> very thick. >> reporter: bob landry owns two acres just three miles from the prison. police have swept the woods. the checkpoint is outside his front door. but there is little comfort in being home. how do you sleep at night? >> very, very lightly. it's tough. my wife and i take shifts. >> reporter: tonight the search for two killers while the woman who allegedly helped them is sitting behind bars. special forces are mobilized in the country of georgia after deadly flooding led to the

escape of some dangerous zoo animals. heavy wind and rain hit the city overnight and destroyed the enclosures at the zoo. residents were warned to stay inside as lion, tigers, and bear even a hippopotamus roamed the streets. three zookeepers died in the storm. but it's not known if the animals killed them. d.c. admits synthetic drug use is a growing problem in the city. and now the mayor is ready to do something about it. mayor muriel bowser will hold a news conference tomorrow morning to unveil her plans to help fight drugs in the district. the mayor says the city is changing its policy to crack down. it involves charging people who supply drugs to community. ahead of her time and a trail blazer for women in police work. that's how retired montgomery county police chief carol mehrling was described. she worked her way up to become

new tonight, two teenagers badly hurt in back-to-back shark attacks. now everyone is being asked to stay out of the water. this happened off the coast of north carolina. a 13-year-old girl reportedly lost part of her arm and is in danger of losing a leg. and about an hour later a 16-year-old boy was bitten by a shark. both are out of surgery now. the beach near oak island is expected to be back open tomorrow. helicopters, as you see there

will monitor the coastline for any more shark activity. outraged airline passengers are safe in london tonight after an excruciating few days. they took off from chicago, but a maintenance issue forced their plane to divert to rural canada, where travelers say they spent 20 hours in difficult conditions. nbc's gabe gutierrez explains. >> reporter: today 176 passengers finally landed in london after a harrowing journey some thought would never end. >> no united representative ever reached out to anybody. no phone calls, no human beings, nothing. >> via chicago to london. >> reporter: he started his trip in wisconsin. then he boarded united flight 958 leaving chicago o'hare friday evening bound for london heathrow. but three hours into the flight, it was diverted to goose bay canada, making an emergency landing due to an unspecified

maintenance issue. >> the issue boils down to the way they handled us once we got down. >> reporter: this is where the passengers spent the night in military barracks. each were giving a few blankets in near freezing temperatures. >> we froze through the night because there wasn't any heat. >> reporter: a passenger later took this picture of the flight crew and said they had slept in a nearby hotel. united telling nbc news hotel space was not available so, we accommodated our customers at a local military base and provided meals. >> our biggest complaint is nobody came around to give us any information. >> reporter: more than 20 hours later, replacement aircraft arrived and flew them to newark. another plane took them on to london. united is apologizing to its custom me, and the airline now says it will refund their tickets to london. still traveler advocates say united could face penalties from the department of transportation. gabe gutierrez, nbc news, chicago. new at 11:00 two men are now under arrest in that shooting that we told you about last night at a wedding reception at the waldorf

astoria. we learned the man had a 9 millimeter gun in his front pants pocket. a woman was grazed in the head and four others were cut by shattering glass. police found the gun at another location. so one of the men is charged with possession of a gun and both face tampering with evidence charges. new video of that may fly invasion in southeastern pennsylvania. this is what is left of that swarm that shut down a bridge and caused at least one accident last night. drivers say there were so many flies, they couldn't see where they were going. by day break the dead flies were piled as high as two feet in some places. experts say mayflies emerge from the water to mate and then immediately die when they reach adulthood. don't be surprised if your blue crab isn't from maryland. experts say there is a shortage right now because crab season

unforgettable one today with comedian dave chappelle. chappelle studied literary and theater arts there, and delivered today's commencement speech. he told the students to keep art in your life and be excellent for yourself and be excellent for each other. we are approaching day five of a heatwave here. incredible. heatwave. it just feels muggy outside. the storms have not helped. just feeling sticky and humid. >> yeah. i stepped out this evening. you typically think when thunderstorms move through you get at least temporary relief. i tweeted out the rains gone, the sauna has returned. we continue with the muggy conditions through at least tuesday. by wednesday we will have a little bit of a break from the humidity. but it's still going to be warm with the high temperature of 88 degrees. and then the humidity quickly returns on thursday. so we're kind of stuck in this weather pattern. tomorrow the weather having a low to moderate impact on your day. when you factor there is a tour of our studio. when you factor in the humidity

it will feel like temperatures are in the mid- to upper 90s as we get into the afternoon hours. with the heat and humidity, more scattered showers and thunderstorms in the forecast later in the day. because it is so muggy outside, any rain that we are track cog be very heavy in nature. and thunderstorms tomorrow could also contain some gusty winds. vial a little bit more on that in a second. temperatures now for the most part in the 70s. washington still is at 81 degrees. 73 in gaithersburg. 77 for those of you in manassas. here is the high temperature in your neighborhood. d.c. hits 92. 89 in leesburg. 88 for those you have in luray. and dealing with potentially a shower during the morning hours. mainly in areas like gaithersburg olney, frederick urbana leesburg, hagerstown and martinsburg. i think the district in areas to the south will remain dry. not the case though, necessarily, as we get into the afternoon and evening hours. so i want to time it out with

huge weather. new, we're still mainly dry. 2:00, 3:00 p.m. that's when we can start to see showers and thunderstorms bubble up. you're trying to figure out maybe playground park time or pool time. the earlier you go the better. the later we get into the day, the better the likelihood that you're dealing with some of that thunderstorm activity. notice future weather is pretty anemic with what it's putting out here right now. about a 40% chance that you are dealing with some rain tomorrow. but it only takes one to two storms to be very strong. and that's in fact what we saw this evening. so a similar situation for tomorrow. the biggest concern again works be some heavy rains during the late afternoon and evening hours. that could reduce visibilities if you're out driving. high winds could produce some isolated wind damage. humidity levels tuesday, oppressive wednesday. it actually falls down to pleasant. and then for the end of the workweek into next weekend, we return to that sticky feeling in the air. a high on tuesday of 93. that will cap off our heatwave
