killed in the attack but as islamists with ties to libyan militants said, belmokhtar was not killed. now, he is claimed to have killed at least 38 people including three americans. >> thank you, megan. a developing story in upstate new york. schools in the town where two murderers escaped will be opened today. the schools will remain open with a police presence. it's been a week since the two broke out of a maximum security prison and authorities think they're stilt in the area. the constant fear though as this residents on edge 24/7. >> how do you sleep at night? >> very, very lightly. it's tough. my wife and i take shifts. >> officials are searching by ground and air for the men. they're using infraredas during the night and spotters

during the day. hundreds of officers are also scouring the woods behind the town hoping up to catch up with the escapees. the district attorney says joyce mitchell worked for weeks to help them plan their escape. the 51-year-old will be in court today. mitchell not only snuck tools into the prison for the escape, she also planned to go on the run with the men. the married prison worker was apparently involved with one of them. she didn't show up to be the get away driver because she didn't want to hurt her husband. mitchell faces up to eight years in prison for her role. she's pleaded not guilty. in d.c., city leaders will announce a new strategy to deal with drugs. mayor muriel bowser plans to announce a new law to help d.c. police crack down on synthetic drug use. she said police will focus on supplies of illegal drugs instead of users going forward. also today a d.c. man faces a felony assault charge following a fight on a metro train. cell phone video shows the man beating another man on the train, this happened more than a

week ago. 52-year-old william nelson is expected in d.c. superior court today. he's being held without bond pending his court hearing. also today a lot of people are planning a sit-in at a school in southeast d.c. they're protesting staff cuts at ballou high school. 32 teachers and staff members were let do. 4:34. to the race for the white house we go. his father won, his brother won and now republicans are asking themselves if jeb bush can win. bush will officially announce his campaign today in miami. we expect a brand new video, bush is playing up his softer side. >> my core believes start with the premise that the most vulnerable in our society should be in the front of the line, not the back. >> bush has already raised millions of dollars and brings a record as governor. he is also joining a crowded field. he stumbled on questions about his brother's invasion of iraq and his campaign has already seen a leadership shakeup.

the woman at the center of the bizarre racial controversy facing another backlash for canceling an naacp meeting. rachel dolezal faced an uproar after her family exposed her for pretending to be back. she leads the spokane, washington, chapter of the naacp. she cancelled the meeting due to the quote need to continue the discussion with the local and room natural naacp leader. another one is questioning whether she has grounds to cancel a meeting. dolezal told an nbc affiliate she does consider herself plaqueblack. >> do you identify as an african-american? >> i like the term black. >> some plan to call for dolezal to step down tonight. a frightening story in the country of georgia where they're still looking for zoo animals that's caped -- that escaped during a big flood.

they're not sure how many are still on the loose. two dozen people are missing as welt. zoo staff and animal workers had to round up tigers, bear, a hippopotamus. some of the animals as well as three zookeepers drowned. >> can you imagine? >> no, i can't. very scary. tom kierein is in the storm team 4 weather center and we're looking at again with the really hot weather and the possible storms. >> yeah, we have had some lightning flashing in our sky to the north of the metro area over the last couple of hours that came from a cluster of thunderstorms, now on the eastern shore. some lightning there and that's exiting anne arundel right now. to the west thunder and lightning now between cumberland, down to south of frostburg. this is moving into berkly springs and martinsburg. perhaps winchester over the next hour or so. lightning and showers coming

through. we're all settled around the metro area but it's humid this morning. it's mild temperatures are in the mid to upper 70s from the rural areas around the shenandoah valley and all the way to the bay. driving today, no problems. morning and midday, caught light for the afternoon. because of scattered afternoon storms coming through. dry roads for the morning commute in the metro area. near 80. then low 90s during the afternoon. some roads are wet from passing thunderstorms. look at storm chances over the next seven days. next weather and traffic on the 1s at 4:51. now melissa has some updates on a disabled car. >> yeah 's off to the right side of the roadway at this point. this is the outer loop of pennsylvania avenue. just a warning if you're headed out any time soon you may come across this if you're headed in that section of prince george's county. 66, no problems right now. remember to listen to our friends on wtop when you hop in your car. i want to warn you, fairfax county parkway at the ramp to 66, work scheduled from 4:00 until 6:00 tonight. mostly on the shoulders there.

good morning. about a dozen people are out of their homes after a natural gas pipeline ruptured in texas. look at this pipeline in dewitt county. it ruptured around 8:00 last

night and we're told that the fire is out and that the gas has been rerouted. fortunately, no one was hurt. seven homes were evacuated. crews will in -- inspect the homes later on this morning to make sure it's safe to return. and the louisville police department released this video of man charging an officer with a flag. the officer then shoots him. the man died. the police say the officer was defending himself. some people in louisville held a rally saying that the offild have tried a non-lethal way of stopping the man before pulling out the gun. today helicopters will keep an eye out for sharks off the coast of north carolina. sharks bit two teens yesterday in the same area in oak island less than an hour apart. the shark bit off a 14-year-old girl's arm and she could lose her left leg as well. then a shark bit off a 16-year-old boy's left arm. rescuers rushed both to the hospital. at the time of the shark attacks, swimmers were forced to leave the water.

stronger america in the world. his talking points say our enemies no longer fear us and our friends no longer trust us. bush released a prelaunch ad sunday in preparation of the event today. now over the weekend over the democratic side, hillary clinton reintroduced herself to voters in iowa. she finished third in the state in 2008, and she hopes to tell -- she told voters on sunday that she can put them back to work. but today it's going to be jeb bush's day. his announcement in a couple of hours, that he's preparing for to announce he's going to run for president. reporting live in washington on capitol hill, edward lawrence. back to you. >> thank you. it is now 4:47. new details in the deadly stabbing at the greenbrier shopping center in fredericksburg. we now know the names of the two victims. 30-year-old matt hughes and 29-year-old anthony carter of albany, georgia, died at the hospital. this happened during a fight in the parking lot 2:00 a.m. on sunday morning. the attacker is still on the loose. a third victim remains in the hospital, but is expected to survive. this morning, police in montgomery county are mourning

the loss of their first-ever female police chief. retired chief carol mehrling died after battling alzheimer's. her colleagues say she was ahead of her time, a trail blazer for women in law enforcement. the silver spring native joined the force in the early 1970s and worked up through the ranks and became chief in 1995. it was the flight that would not end. that's how passengers on board united airlines flight 958 described their experience. that left chicago o'hare for london friday night, but it was diverted to goose bay, canada. the emergency landing was for a maintenance issue. passengers spent the next 20 hours in military barracks and were not allowed access to their luggage. meanwhile the flight crew got to stay at a nearby hotel. during the whole ordeal, passengers said no one from united ever reached out to explain what was happening. >> we froze through the night because there wasn't any heat. >> we did not know what was going on. we were treated in a very inhumane manner.

>> united airlines now apologizing and says it will refund all 176 passengers what they paid for tickets. traveler advocates though say that the airline could still face penalties from the department of transportation for its handling of this incident. one of the women involved in a fight at an indianapolis walmart is facing charges. here is the catch though, she's charged with dragging her 6-year-old in the fight here. this fight allegedly started when stephenson was arguing with the walmart employee about leaving carts full of merchandise in the aisle. stephenson yelled at her son to punch the employee in the face and he did. stephenson could face jail time if convicted. alive and ready to hit the ground running that what's scientists are saying about the

cool he came back home for that. tom kierein i mean -- >> don't look at me like that. >> this early in the morning and we are feeling it. >> it is just so steamy. >> it is. >> probably the most humid we have had so far this year. it is with us again this morning. when you step out the door, you'll walk into a wall of humidity. and there is the radar over the last six hours the history showing some thundershowers that passed north of us, flashes of lightning in the sky. a few flashes of lightning now in the clusters of thundershowers way off to the north and the west. metro area right now, we have dry pavement and we are just steamy here. a little bit of patchy fog around. those showers far to north and west. they may move into the shenandoah valley, panhandle of west virginia over the next hour or so, but generally breaking up after that. rest of the morning will stay dry in the metro area. but it will stay teesteamy. nearby suburbs and around the

bay, shenandoah valley, around 60s as well. reagan national at 79 degrees here. predawn on this monday. hour by hour through the rest of the morning into the low 80s by 8:00 or 9:00. and then jumping up to near 90 by noon. then hitting low 90s mid afternoon to late afternoon. that's when we'll likely have some thundershowers popping up. likely not severe. only a very small chance that an isolated thunderstorm would produce any wind damage or hail this afternoon, but there may be a few scattered thundershowers around late afternoon and into this evening as we come back down. look at how steamy it was yesterday morning. we took this picture of steamy sunlight streaming through trees. post your pictures on facebook and instagram and twitter and share. yes, oppressive humidity through tuesday. and then by midweek, it will be pleasant on wednesday. but then by the end of the week getting sticky again. so we are going to get a brief

you're watching "news4 today." >> your commute to work on metro should be back to normal this morning. red line riders experienced multiple delays over the last few days. saturday, an arcing insulator forced trains to single track around dupont circle. on sunday, metro suspended service between dupont circle and the park because of the fire department activity. starting july 1, you will save money crossing the bridge over the potomac between maryland and virginia. the round trip price will drop $1 to $4.50. this is part of larry hogan's plan to lower statewide tolls that can save drivers $270 million over the next five years. today you can hop on a circulator bus on the mall. yesterday was the inaugural start of the route. it stops at the smithsonian

museums along the way too. it's the first public transportation route than takes you to monuments and only $1. to see the specific stops you can go go to the nbc washington app and search circulator. the virginia department of education is developing a way for your student to get the high school diploma online. it will accept 100 students on a first come basis. students would receive lessons through the virtual virginia online class program. that program will launch in the fall. crab season in maryland is off to a slow start. you may see crabs on the menu but they may not be from maryland. why bother eating them though? they're shipping them in from out of state and causing the prices to go up. it may not look like it at the wharf but there's a shortage of the blue crab. up until a month ago, they were saying they were up about 30%
