here, the vehicle crashed and then caught on fire. again, a passenger we're told a child, a boy, died. we do not have his age. a woman was transported to the hospital. her condition is considered to be serious. she had to be taken to a burn unit because of the injuries from this car fire. from what i have been told from montgomery county fire and rescue, there was an ambulance in the area headed back to fire station and came upon this accident. it was that ambulance crew that grabbed the fire extinguishers and put out the fire, rescued the woman out of the car and again that woman has been taken to an area burn unit for treatment of her injuries. we'll send it back to you. >> that's right. darcy spencer just reported, sam eig highway is closed between diamondback drive and fields road due to this fatal accident. your alternate is route 28. also the ramp from great seneca highway to sam eig highway is closed because of the same accident. hunter millville between lawyers road and hunter stations road is

critical condition. a new development coming today for the man accused of killing four people in a mansion in northwest d.c. investigators say that daron wint held the savopouloses and 10-year-old son phillip and housekeeper hostage and then killed them last month. today, wint will tell a judge he hired sean hanover as the new defense attorney. before now, public defenders had represented wint. we'll learn what a judge plans to do about a man who ran into the white house last year. gonzalez entered the front door of the white house last september. he haves carrying a knife at the time. that incident led to the director of the secret service resigning. today a judge will sentence gonzalez up to 18 months in prison. coming up in an hour on the "today" show the woman who set off a national firestorm will speak live with matt lauer. rachel dolezal resigned from the naacp yesterday after revelations she pretended to be

a black person. dolezal says that people don't have the full story, but she didn't specifically say that she's sorry. the naacp said it's focused on the integrity of the advocacy, not dolezal's racial identity. and as you know, dolezal attended howard university as a white graduate student. in 2002 dolezal sued howard saying the school discriminated against her because she was white. among her claims, she says officials removed some of her artwork from the exhibition in order to favor african-american students. the court ultimately ruled in howard's favor. howard students were curious but showed some compassion for her position. dolezal -- the massive data -- breach that affects so many federal workers will be the subject of an intense hearing today. this morning every member of the house oversight committee will receive a briefing on the hack. jeh johnson will be one of the officials delivering an update on capitol hill.

hackers got access to as many as 14 million federal workers' private information. that number could go up since the breach started in december. but it wasn't detected until april. donald trump signaling a possible presidential bid. many say that he appears much more serious this time around. trump is expected to share the details of his personal fortune including a net worth of about $9 billion. that's a disclosure trump hasn't made in previous election years. we'll be watching his 11:00 news conference today where he's expected to lay out his 2016 intentions. it's now 6:05. if you hope for a less crowded commute on metro this morning that's not going to happen. about 100 eight-car trains are not on the rails this morning because of safety inspections. doors on the 4000 series cars opened up while trains were in motion. causing metro to pull them from service. metro has said the 4000 series would return this week but news4's adam tuss found out that those cars will not be running

we are staying on top of breaking news in montgomery county. a young boy died in a fiery crash in gaithersburg. here's a live look at the scene now. crews rushed a woman with burn wounds to the hospital. sam eig highway is closed between diamondback drive and fields road. we'll get you around this crash at 6:21. right now the second tropical storm of the atlantic hurricane season is churning off the gulf coast. flooding is a major concern here, especially in the same areas that were under water just three weeks ago. let's go to meagan fitzgerald at the live desk with more. >> yeah that's right. in just a few hours tropical storm bill is expected to make landfall. the eastern part of texas

packing winds of up to 60 miles per hour. take a look at the strong waves right now on the gulf coast. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein says the storm should make landfall later this afternoon. now four to eight inches of rain is expected to fall today. that means flooding is a big concern. officials in galveston county have already called for voluntary evacuations. dozens of school districts have cancelled class for today. a toddler remains in the hospital this morning after being found at the bottom of a pool in fairfax county. this happened sunday evening at the pirates cove water park in lorton. lifeguards were clearing the pool because of lightning when the 2-year-old boy was spotted in the water. this is the second pool incident in just a few weeks in the lorton area. take a look at a san diego deputy caught on camera tadzing a 13-year-old -- tasing a 13-year-old. this morning the sheriff's department said that's more to

the story than what you see on the tape. that deputy said he tried several times to get the teenager into his squad car. the boy had been reported as a runaway. the deputy says when he approached the boy he became combative and they got in a fight and the deputy claims that 13-year-old also bit him. >> what we have is really an out of control juvenile who could have prevented this whole ordeal just by obeying the commands of the deputy and getting in the car so he could be returned home. >> now, the sheriff's office pictures -- released pictures of the bite marks on the officer's arm. no dash cam or body camera video that shows what happened before the incident. texas rangers will investigate the pool party incident that cost a deputy his job. mckinney police officer casebolt's reaction caused his resignation. mckinney police can investigate

the incident. protesters are calling for charges against that police officer. a judge is retiring. montgomery county circuit judge audrey creighton submitted her letter of retirement. last year, her ex-boyfriend senning stole her car and crashed it. creighton once served as his public defender. 6:18. a budget battle looms in prince george's county. rushern baker plans to veto parts of the budget approved by the county council. he plans to replace a 4% property tax increase with an 11.45% increase tax hike. and the move could spark a legal challenge between the county executive and the council. >> no other choice but to veto the budget. >> if the council overrides the veto, then we would be in a very precarious situation, a very unknown position.

100 degrees by mid afternoon. that feels like temperature as we climb to the low 90s. so it will drop about 20 degrees from where we are right now. reagan national at 78. it will be making it into the low 90s by this later this afternoon. hour by hour by 8:00 it will be near 80. by noon near 90. and then by 3:00 or 4:00 or 5:00, hovering in the near 90s. those storms rolling on through. the main threat time looks to be between around 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and mainly just south of the metro area. then a break coming our way tomorrow. high heat and high humidity going to go away for a day. highs reaching the upper 80s with low humidity. very pleasant day and then on thursday into the mid 80s. getting more humid. maybe a more shower or afternoon thundershower. then we start to heat up again. upper 80s on friday. and maybe some scattered afternoon storms. over the weekend, the remnants of tropical storm bill rolling our way coming in from the west. bringing us some showers and maybe some thundershowers during the day on saturday in the mid

back to you. >> thank you. 6:22 right now. 1 million more hondas have been added to the nationwide recall. the car company says it applies to civics and to accords made between 2003 and 2007. it's to fix the air bags supplied by the takata corporate. the problem has killed seven people and left more than 100 hurt. your safety before boarding a plane will be the subject of a hearing on capitol hill today. a recent homeland security report found 73 tsa employees with active clearance badges had possible links to terrorism. homeland security's inspector general will testify at that hearing. lawmakers say an overhaul of the hiring process is needed. this morning, two kids who each lost an arm in separate shark attacks in north carolina are in the hospital. the attacks happened in oak island on sunday. a shark bit a 12-year-old girl

and then about two miles away a shark bit a 16-year-old boy. the kids were in about waist deep water at the time. investigators do not know if the same shark is responsible for both attacks. the beach remains open too. authorities are now patrolling the area looking for sharks. coming up on the "today" show, gabe gutierrez is working on this developing story. the fda is making headlines in "news4 your health" this morning. the agency can announce a total ban on trans fats as early as today. the fda says trans fats raise bad cholesterol levels and can raise your increase for heart disease. it wants them completely gone within three years. a new study finds that eating chocolate is linked to the lower risk of heart disease and stroke. i knew it was good for you, aaron. scientists tracked more than 20000 people who filled out lifestyle and diet questionnaires. people who ate up to 3 1/2 ounces of chocolate were 11% less likely to develop heart disease. they also had a 23% lower risk of stroke. of course this does not mean

counties next to the pennsylvania border in the underper 80s. and then in the panhandle of west virginia and the shenandoah valley it will be reaching near 90 degrees. 80s out of the mountains as some scattered thundershowers roll on through. next weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:41. your bus stop forecast. aaron? >> tom thank you. 6:31 now. today the man accused of killing a fellow university of mary washington student will be in court. police believe steven vander briel strangled grace mann back in april. they were roommates. police arrested vander briel on murder and abduction charges. defense lawyers put out new proposals for the man accused of killing three well known residents in ten years. the lawyers are now asking for a mental health expert to help with the defense and they want to bar prosecutors from using some of severance's writings. they show some contempt for police. i'm meagan fitzgerald at the live desk.

we have confirmed a u.s. air strike over the weekend killed the second in command of al qaeda in yemen. this is the harshest blow to the terrorist network since the killing of osama bin laden. the death of nasir al wuhayshi was confirmed in a video release by al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. al wuhayshi used to be a secretary to bin laden. he is linked to a number of foiled or botched attacks on the u.s. 6:32. new develops about two escaped prisoners in new york and the woman police say helped the men go free. a senior law enforcement official told nbc news they're investigating claims that joyce mitchell wanted the prisoners to kill her husband. police arrested her earlier this week and her husband is also a prison employee. according to investigators, joyce mitchell was romantically involved with convicted murderers david sweat and richard matt. before helping them escape.

mitchell had pled not guilty to all the charges. police are asking for your help to find this woman. take a look. they want to question her about a murder that happened outside a mcdonald's back in may in waldorf. a prince george's county police officer and his mother are charged in this case. police say the mother may have used her son's service weapon to shoot his ex, and the woman's new husband. the new husband died. now to an update on news4 i-team investigation. today is your chance to speak up on a new proposed piece of legislation to stop predatory towing in montgomery county. the bill would reform towing practices on private property including setting a flat rate for certain services and prohibiting tow spotters. employees whose main job is to watch for violators. the committee on public safety will hold a hearing at 7:30 tonight. today you learn more about the transformed 66 inside the beltway project. a public hearing will be held in falls church. that takes place between 7:00

and 9:00. this involves converting the existing hov lanes into toll lanes during peak travel times. if you can't make tonight's meeting there will be a presentation tomorrow night at arlington central library at 7:00 p.m. in just a few hours, the teachers union will urge the d.c. council to delay a vote that would limit access to teacher evaluations. it would block you from accessing most of the information in those evaluations. only a summary would be available for public release. council members say current laws protect public schoolteachers' personal information. it is designed to protect charter school employees. the vote is scheduled for june 30th. the naacp in loudoun county wants the school board to rethink naming a new middle school after a man who may have been involved in segregation laws. the school is named after former state delegate john f. ryan instead of mathias giordano who died last year of bone cancer. the civil rights group found

we are tracking breaking news on the roads at 6:45 as which work to get you up to the minute. a fiery crash left a boy dead. >> darcy spencer has new information about this accident. darcy? >> reporter: good morning. what we're learning is that the victim who died in the single-vehicle crash was about 10 years old. that little boy apparently in the back passenger portion of the car. what we found out just a few

minutes ago, apparently the car was driving here on the eastbound side and went over the median. you can see that the car plowed right into that hillside there. right off of sam eig highway. let's go to some show we shot a short time ago. so police are saying this accident happened around 3:30 this morning. they're trying to figure out what was happening, where was the woman going where was she heading to at 3:30 in the morning with a young child in the back seat. an ambulance crew happened to be in the area and they spotted this car. they jumped out. that car was on fire and they grabbed the fire extinguisher to put the fire out. it wasn't until later that they realized there was a child inside. >> taken from the scene with the burns and other injuries and taken to a hospital. and once the fire was put out the investigators or fire rescue

discovered a child, deceased, in the vehicle. >> reporter: and again, we have heard that the child is about 10 years old. the woman who was driving the car was taken to a local burn center. she is listed in serious condition. the roadway is still closed. for latest on the traffic impact let's go to alexis davies. >> thank you, darcy. yes, sam eig highway is shut down between diamondback drive and fields road and the ramp from great seneca road is closed. your best alternate is route 28. elsewhere we have an accident northbound 395 at glebe road off to the shoulder there. back to you. i'm meagan fitzgerald at the live desk. breaking news out of berkeley, california, where five people are dead, eight others injured after a balcony collapsed on to a sidewalk. now, it happened just after 12:30 this morning. police say the balcony was on the fourth floor of a four-story building. investigators don't know the cause of the collapse. the city's building department is assisting berkeley police in the investigation.

in just a few minutes the woman who set off a national firestorm will speak live with matt lauer on the "today" show. rachel dolezal resigned from the naacp yesterday after revelations that she pretended to be a black person. dolezal says people don't have the full story. she also didn't specifically apologize. the naacp says it's focused on the integrity of its advocacy, not her racial identity. dolezal attended howard university and in 2002 she sued howard saying the school discriminated against her because she was white. the court's ultimately ruled in howard university's favor. the students we spoke with were curious, but also showed some compassion for her. >> i also feel like she stood up for the cause. at the same time. you know? she stood up for our rights even though she wasn't quote/unquote one of us. >> dolezal said she'll continue to advocate for human rights

house last year. last week omar gonzalez pled guilty to entering the front door and he was carrying a knife at the time. the incident led the director of the secret service to resign. today, a judge will sentence gonzalez to as much as 18 months in prison. the massive data preachbreach that affected in federal workers will be the subject of an intense hearing. the oversight committee will receive a briefing and jeh johnson will be one of those officials delivering the update on the hill. hackers got access as to many as 14 million workers' information. it wasn't detected until april. donald trump is signaling a possible presidential bid again. many say he appears much more serious this time around. trump is expected to share the details of his personal fortune including a net worth of about $9 billion. that is a disclosure that trump
