and developing tonight. why the nats may have lost more than just a ball game tonight. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. >> and off the top tonight news4's covering all angles of the charleston massacre tonight. chris lawrence live in the city rocked by the tragedy. and shomari stone is here in washington with reaction from people still in shock by the violence. >> it's hard to see him, but through the bars is dylann roof, the suspected shooter. he is back in south carolina at this hour after his capture in north carolina. and soon he will face nine counts of murder charges. >> tonight the victims are mourned. supporters creating a makeshift memorial in front of that church to remember the nine lives lost. the attack is evoking painful memories tonight of some of the darkest chapters in our nation's history. >> and the loss of those nine victims leaving a huge void in the charleston community.

news4's chris lawrence is live there where the healing process is just beginning. chris? >> reporter: yeah, doreen when governor nikki haley said that the entire state had been shaken, its heart and soul, she hit on something. it is really hard to put into words some of the emotion we've seen here since we got here. i just want to take you into here. this is emanuel ame church. you can see, a tremendous amount of showers, people coming by all night here to place things. for lack of a better term, to pay their respects to what happened here just last night. not much more than 24 hours ago. there was also another huge vigil across town just a couple of hours ago at another ame church here in town. the mayor was there. governor nikki haley attended that vigil. just standing room only at that vigil earlier. and when it was done and when it wrapped up, then people marched through the city in solidarity. we got a chance to speak to some of the people who have been

coming out here to the church tonight to talk about their feelings and to ask them what made them compel to be here right now. >> i woke up this morning, and i could feel the pain and the grief in the city. it feels like -- i feel like i'm at an actual funeral of a family member of mine. >> there is hope that maybe this can bring some people together. >> on my way walking here, a lady -- a caucasian lady just hugged me and was crying and was saying "god bless you." >> reporter: so i think you get the sense. there is a tremendous amount of pain and a tremendous amount of hope here as well. tomorrow night, there will be the biggest vigil yet. it's going to be held at the college of charleston, the arena there. and also, they have set up a fund to help some of these nine families who have lost their

church massacre in charleston. >> it's hard. it's hurtful. it's painful. >> reporter: jesse jennings has been an usher here for 25 years. he moved to maryland from down south experiencing and seeing racism as a young man during segregation. he believes the mass murder suspect dillon roof is filled with the same hatred for black people. >> having been born in mississippi i thought a lot of the racism and hatred would have gone away. but it still exists. >> and we have an experience of connections to brothers and sisters of faith and need to be in prayers for them. >> reporter: the prayers extend from north bethesda to the martin luther king memorial in d.c. >> it's pretty clear that it was motived by racial prejts. prejudice. and martin luther king is just a symbol of racial equality. and i think it's really important that we remember that. >> we remember the ministry of the reverend sharonda singleton.

and we remember myra compton. may god's spirit comfort their families, the congregation that has lost a loved one. >> i pray to god that the nation will come together and heal and be as one and not have so much hatred for each other. >> reporter: and many people i talked to tonight tell me that they are going to continue to pray for the victims, and they are concerned about security at predominantly black churches throughout the nation this coming sunday. live here at the dr. martin luther king memorial, i'm shomari stone, news4. [ bell ] the sounds of solidarity. the national cathedral tolled its bell nine times this evening, once for each victim. >> now is the time for mourning and for healing. but let's be clear.

at some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this fight of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. and at some point it's going to be important for the american people to come to grips with it. >> it's not just a matter of america having a lot of guns. there is also the matter of churches having very little security. los angeles' police chief has already announced plans to beef up security around that city's churches to prevent some kind of copycat crime. but this is not a new phenomenon since four little girls were killed in the bombing of a birmingham baptist church in 1963. there have been 13 mass murders in or near places of worship. >> security, simply an awareness. having one or two people who are focused on things that we call a dlr, don't look right. >> one expert estimates there were 176 violent incidents in places of worship in this country last year.

>> we will update our coverage of the church massacre on line throughout the night. and right now you can read about the florist who spotted the alleged shooter. head to nbcwashington.com during the break and search "florist." now to the severe -- that's not a good sound. now to the severe weather that rolled through our area. a viewer in chantilly captured this marble-sized hail falling this evening. >> a tree falling on a hou chopper 4 over the scene near the reston parkway. looks like the tree slice right through the roof. no injuries reported. and this tree took over a baseball diamond in reston. chopper 4 through over several downed trees in residential areas near dulles airport. take a live look at the storm team 4 radar now. most of the storms that have slammed our area have moved out. but chief meteorologist doug cameron still tracking some activity. what is going on out there doug? >> kind of a hectic day today.

we saw winds at dulles gusts of 64 miles per hour. we saw ping-pong ball sized hail. even some of a billiard ball. that's how big the hail was across the area, especially chantilly, centerville, reston and fairfax. those are the storms that are moving through the south right now. you can see them continuing. there is the severe weather we saw earlier. the only storms in our area right now are anne arundel county, north annapolis. a lot in prince george's and anne arundel seeing a lot of lightning out there. they are from these storms moving across the bay and towards the eastern shore. but look back to the west. we have another line of storms that has developed. that one is going to make its way towards the east over the next couple of hours. could bring us some strong storms and heavy rain overnight. how far a way? on this trajectory at 30 miles per hour, it's right about three hours, eight minutes into d.c. that means right around two income the morning and a little earlier farther to the west. i'm tracking those storms too.

i've got that forecast for you coming up. i'm carol maloney. the injury for all-star bryce harper. but it may not be as bad as initially feared. it happened in the sixth inning tonight. harper was making a routine throw from the outfield when his back foot slipped in the wet grass. he stayed down for a few minutes clutching his left leg, but walked off on his own power. scary moment, but the team is reporting it's a mild hamstring strain. he is day to day. he will be evaluated tomorrow. we're going hear from bryce coming up later in sports. for now from the live desk i'm carol maloney. thanks. the woman who jesse matthew is convicted of sexually assaulting took the stand. she told the judge what her life has been like since the attack happened ten years ago. last week matthew took an alford plea and was convict to have had crime against her. the victim's testimony today could impact how the judge sentences matthew that will happen in october. she told the courtroom, quote, i

basically had stopped living, not going back to the routine. you're suffering so you don't want to get up. she also added if i don't testify, what if the person was not charged, and reich someone else would be harmed. so i did not want that to happen. police rushed to southeast d.c. today after reports of gunfire. they arrived to find a man had been killed in a burst of gunfire. more than 20 shots. the victim who is known simply as b. was shot in an alley near fifth and h street in broad daylight about 11:30 this morning. police have no idea why he was shot, and they say they have no suspects in the case. but one witness told news4 he saw a man dressed all in black run from the scene right after the shooting. tonight all lanes of the gw parkway are back open. the northbound lanes were closed from sprout run parkway here to the cia exit for more than 12 hours today. a tour bus engine exploded, sending debris, oil and diesel

all over the road. sand was used to sop up the oil. but some of it had already made its way down seven different drains. that required more time and a more extensive cleanup process. all lanes were opened just in time for the evening rush hour. and incredible and a frightening case of mistaken identity. one south carolina school. two students named dylann roof. the person not accused of gunning down nine people in a church is reacting to the firestorm. two people in two days struck and killed on a district road. tonight one group is pounding the pavement and demanding action. and social media takes down a former world series hero. what the player did to get benched for

make the most of summer... with volvo. there is a guy in south carolina who will probably want to stay off of social media for a while. the young man went to the same high school as the suspect in the church massacre and his name is dylan roof dylan with one n. the suspect spells his name with two ns. the nonsuspect posted a message on facebook that said in part i want it to be understood that i am not the man responsible for shooting. d.c. residents took to the street in northwest tonight, trying to bring attention to the dangers of simply walking through the city. they're concerned because in recent week there's have been two deadly accidents involving pedestrians in d.c. and tonight the marchers were telling the city to make intersections safer for people traveling on foot. news4's jackie bensen has our report tonight. >> reporter: they numbered

almost 100 strong, picking up more as they threaded past sidewalk cafes on wisconsin avenue. it was organize bade group called all walk d.c. in memory of the two pedestrians who were struck and killed in two different collisions along a roughly one-mile stretch of wisconsin avenue last week. on june 10th 31-year-old george mina of arlington, a pediatric phlebotomist was struck by a green jaguar while crossing. he died a week later. >> we wanted to come out in support of george. we love the fact that there is awareness now for pedestrians for the accident occurred. and we would like to see something done i guess by the city. >> reporter: the next day, june 11th at the intersection of wisconsin and calvert street northwest, a delivery truck making a right turn struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street. 79-year-old margaret ruth dickey died at the scene. known to friends as miss peggy,

she had lived at the nearby carolan house apartments for 50 years. >> it is a special intersection. i'm scared to cross the street. the right-hand turn, the left hand turns. no one pays any attention. i was almost hit a couple weeks ago. >> reporter: advocates for safer walking point to nearby arlington, virginia as an example of how a municipal commitment to making streets safer worked to reduce injuries. jackie bensen, news4. you have probably checked facebook or instagram at work right? well maybe like the picture, even that simple action has one of baseball's best players on the bench tonight. last night you see during the seventh inning bathroom break, red sox third baseman sandoval liked a woman's picture on instagram. hey, a blogger noticed the timing of the like, tweeted about it. turns out the red sox have a policy that bans in-game cell

phone use. tonight sandoval watching the game from the bench. he has apologized. and while i was reading that story, i noticed that doug was on instagram. so you're on the bench tomorrow night buddy. three-day weekend. >> i think it's legal for me. during commercial breaks. >> that's the danger about social immediate dwlachlt ismedia. there is a record with a time stamp. still tracking showers and thunderstorms out there. nothing in the immediate area. but we still have some lightning just off to the east towards positions of the eastern shore. you can see that from the district if you look off towards the east. right now temperatures 77 degrees. we have some cloud cover. but once again we're also looking at some clearing in parts of the region. that heat index, not a big deal. a 78 right now. look at the numbers. 75 in leesburg. 79 in fredericksburg. 71 towards huntingdon. a little warm and humid. going to be a little tag overnight tonight. this is what i'm talking about. look at all that lightning just north and east of annapolis. it's moving out of our region. but once again, all of that

lightning still visible, especially into prince george's county, anne arundel county, calvert county. a lot of you asking what that is. not heat lightning. heat lightning does not exist. it is lightning from a distant storm, and there is that storm. the rest of the area is dry, for now. but we're not done just yet. get ready. this is what i'm look at now. this line of showers and thunderstorms. and this line has a lot of thunder and lightning associated with it too. also, some very heavy rain. this is going to make its way through the area between 1:00 and 3:00 in the morning. do not be surprised if you're woken up by this. going to see some very heavy rain. i do not expect anything too heavy and nothing too severe. 12:30, about an hour and a half away, could see some showers moving through. here is the line. notice the computer model takes it just north of d.c. i think even in d.c., even in northern virginia, we have a chance to see this the too. so the computer model not handling it too well. even out towards leesburg and d.c., watch out for that. once again to 1:00, back toward i-81. to about 2:00 to 3:00 in and around the metro area tomorrow night.

now tomorrow morning wake tongue no problems. some wet roadways. so give yourself a little bit of extra time. but that's about it. around noon we start to break out into the sunshine after some of that fog and low clouds burn off. and then we see another chance of scattered storms. now they'll just be scattered. but any storms that develop could once again be strong like they were during the day today. i don't expect anything severe. but any storms could have some very heavy downpours. highs right back around 90. 90 d.c. 91 in fredericksburg. 85 towards martinsburg. the impact forecast will be on the low side for most of the day. but if you get in one of the storms, maybe push it up to moderate. it will be on the humid side as we move through the day. temperatures the next couple days. tomorrow 87 on saturday. 92 on sunday. let's talk about the weekend. it looks like sunday is a washout, right? well, that's not the case. i think most of this, as the remnants of bill move overhead, this is tropical storm bill, the remnants moving over heaviest rain saturday night. we'll see a shower during the day saturday. overnight saturday night we

could see very heavy rain. but most of sunday right now looks dry. the quicker we clear out on sunday, i've got a 70% chance of rain. but that's through about 8:00,00, 10:00 in the morning. in the afternoon, looks good. but listen to this. i'm going to a high of 92 there. i could see us easily hitting 94, 95 sunday afternoon if that closed out a little faster. that's something to watch too. >> after the rain in the morning, be very steamy. >> very. >> thas, doug. up next we go into the clubhouse to find out how bryce harper is doing following that inju

he eventually would walk off the field on his own power which was a good sign before he got checked out. now adding insult to injury the nats lost the lead and trail 4-3. robinson representing the tying run. nats lose it 5-3. harper is going to be evaluated tomorrow. but he puts our minds at ease at the game. >> it's very slippery out there in the rain. the right knee gave out. and then i put all my pressure on the left knee. and my hamstring, didn't feel very good. it wasn't a very good pain. i'm going to see how it feels tomorrow. be smart about it, of course. so try to be as smart as i can. but don't feel right tomorrow, then maybe taking that day off. >> maybe take a day off. i could say i'm definitely out. but pretty amazing after you see that video. >> oh, i'm fine, no problem.
