northbound and southbound, no issues there. nice and clear. remember to listen to our friends on wtop when you hop in your car for the latest on traffic. >> thanks, melissa. we expect some crucial developments today now that the man accused of murdering six women and three men in a black church has been caught. right now dylann roof is in a south carolina detention center. he has waived his right to counsel. that means he might hire his own lawyer or represent himself. authorities are investigating this as a hate crime. we have seen images of roof wearing a jacket with the flag of the former white racist regimes. roof grew up in columbia and lexington, south carolina. in march he was arrested at a mall after employees said he was asking suspicious questions about a store's operation. and then he was arrested again there and banned for three years. state agents went to a home said to belong to his father. he said he wouldn't talk to nbc

news. now the details of what happened inside that church are harrowing. "the new york times" reports that the youngest victim 26-year-old tywanza sanders told the gunman quote, you don't have to do this. sanders dove in front of his aunt to protect her. we have learned that the library where cynthia hurd worked will be renamed in her honor. just hours after the children of sharon singleton learned what happened, they spoke of forgiveness. >> we forgive, that's one thing we'll do. we forgive right now. for everything that's happened. she's the best mom i ever could have asked for. and -- honestly, it's going to be tough, but i know we'll get through it as a family. >> singleton was a speech therapist at goose creek high school in suburban charlotte. the anguish in the charleston community are palpable. people are coming together though. chris lawrence is there in charleston and he spoke to several people who said they won't let the shooting divide them. >> well, i woke up this morning

and i could feel the pain and the grief in this city. >> it feels like family died. i feel like i'm at an actual funeral. >> tomorrow the city of charleston will hold a memorial at the college of charleston arena. here in our area, you can join those mourning and praying. today at noon a prayer service will be held at the metropolitan ame church. tonight at 7:00, you can join members of the national plaque plaqueplaque black united front near "u" street metro station. a developing story now. d.c. police investigating a deadly shooting. it happened before midnight along fifth street in northwest d.c. the victim was shot in the back and later died at the hospital. police have not released details about a suspect or motive. and a gas station in vienna. it happened at the james madison shell station on maple avenue

west. the explosion could be felt at least a mile away. crews got the fire under control. no injuries have been reported. just one day after a massive shutdown on the george washington parkway, there are now calls for change. who says enough is enough. and let's take a live look outside. we'll go to megan mcgrath who is taking a look at the weather. we are already sitting at 71 degrees. how are you doing, megan? >> reporter: good morning. doing well. right now people in our area are -- or parts of the area are waking up to storm damage. that storm packed quite a punch in some spots like reston. that's where we are this morning. take a look at this tree. a very large tree snapped right around the base, came tumbling down. fortunately for the homeowners on trotter lane, the bulk of the tree missed the house. however, it did come crashing down on top of their garage and you can see the damage they're dealing with today. this is just one tree on this street that came tumbling down. a little further down in the

cul-de-sac, another tree that came down. take a look at this video. shot by one of our viewers. some areas actually saw marble sized hail and you can see and hear it coming down. this was actually -- this video was taken in the chantilly area. this was quite a storm, quite a sight to see. and unfortunately some people are dealing with the damage that came as a result of falling trees. we also had the reports of downed power lines. there are some power outages in the area so as people start to wake up this morning depending upon where you live and whether you had one of those really violent cells that came through, you're going to be doing some cleaning up this morning. we have seen on our drive down here a lot of leaf debris and small limbs around and then of course in some spots the more severe damage. back to you all in the studio. >> thanks megan. we are finding out who's calling for change after a massive shutdown on the george washington parkway. >> and let's look outside across the district this morning where

branch avenue, pennsylvania avenue, indian head highway, everything is moving well. looking at northbound and southbound, 95 looking food as well. the construction northbound near quantity coe is cleared -- quantico is cleared out of the way right now. dale city will start to get a tad slow here in the coming minutes. 66 west at business route 234, that crash is completely out of the way. no problems there. 270 at shady grove road, a little bit of a sheen on the road, and everything looks good northbound and southbound and back at 5:21. new this morning we're learning about a disturbance at a church. they arrested the man also accused of yelling racial slurs. >> that comes days after a church massacre in south carolina. we'll go live to charleston in two minutes. it's 5:11.

you're watching "news4 today." >> your time is 5:15. we are following the latest in south carolina where the man accused of murdering nine people will soon appear in court for the first time. that as the community deals with the loss of their neighbors. nbc's dave wagner joins us live from charleston with more. dave, good morning. >> reporter: yeah good morning to you eun. i'm across the street now from the emanuel ame church right now. you can see an awful lot of reporters out here, but beyond them there are a lot of flowers and nine bows, one for each of the victims gunned down. the 21-year-old suspect is due in court today here in charleston. i did speak with the brother of one of the women gunned down

inside this church. he said he's all about forgiveness, but at the same time, he would like dylann roof to meet his maker sooner than later. those are his words here. roof's capture was a combination of good police work and really community involvement. we all saw those photographs that were released, the surveillance photos, of dylann and photos of his car. well, there was a woman four hours away from here, part-time florist up in shelby, north carolina. she was driving down the road. thought she saw that car and ense plate. and then began to follow it. she had a friend call police and the rest is really history here. so quick police work. and smart community involvement. that's how they have roof in custody right now. eun? >> dave wagner, live in charleston, south carolina for us this morning. thank you. well, some jitters in our area after a disturbance at a black church in richmond. man is now in custody and will be evaluated after he threatened

worshipers at a south richmond church. police told the "richmond times-dispatch" he was beating on a door at united nations church international. it happened last night. a member of the black church said that the man who was yelling white was -- was yelling racial slurs and making threats. new details, was know the name of the man shot and killed in the district. brian sickles was shot and killed yesterday morning. poli called to 51th street southeast after reports of gunfire. more than 20 shots were fired. sickles was found in the alley near fifth and "h." one witness told news4 he saw a man dressed all in black run from the scene after the shooting. well, today the state department will release the annual report on terrorism. with the growth of isis and the rise of home grown terror, it may be critical in engaging the state of terrorism around the world. it includes descriptions of foreign terrorist organizations

and updates on state sponsors of terrorism. today a judge will decide if a man who made threats against metro will remain in jail. today, a judge ordered a mental evaluation of jerez coleman. according to wtop, the full report on that evaluation will be released today and a judge will decide if he'll be released from jail tomorrow. he made threats between last september and may. he was once featured on mtv's "catfish." d.c. mayor bowser is attending the annual conference on mayors. she plans to host a breakfast at the wilson building when she return. "news4 your health" that'll make you with want to get up and take a walk. we have new research that too much sitting leads to the increased risk of anxiety hmm. scientists looked at nine different studies of adults teens and children and found the

general connection between anxiety symptoms and the total time spent sitting during work commuting and watching television. this could be due to poor sleep patterns. too much sitting is linked to poor health and premature health. >> that's why the director makes us move around the studio all morning long. a lot of people use yoga tothere's another use for it. some doctors are prescribing yoga as therapy for patients with traumatic brain injuries. >> you can work on these separate areas that each person with brain injury may have to work with. their balance, their strength, their breathing, which is ultimately very important. movement in general. posture and stability. >> here's another benefit to yoga therapy, eun. you probably already know. it's a great stress reliever. >> it is. >> namaste. this next story is strange but bear with me. apparently watching cat videos

region. hour by hour, the storms wouldn't be developing until later in the afternoon. this is by noontime, the areas in green showers way out in the mountains. and then around 2:00, a little bit of thunder and lightning and then by 4:00, a few of these scattered thundershowers coming through in the southern and eastern suburbs between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. then on the eastern shore between 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. or so, maybe a few scattered thundershowers after 9:00 they'll be gone. partly cloudy the rest of the night. we don't have as high a severe threat as we had yesterday. very small chance of a tornado and a chance of hail and heavy rain from the storms later this afternoon. but then on saturday increasing clouds, highs upper 80s. the remnants of tropical storm bill coming through on saturday night withal so showers and thundershowers. they may linger into sunday morning. hot and humid on sunday, up near 90. a smaller chance of an isolated

white house office of management and budget. they were exposed that was left on airplanes used in vietnam. forces may have been expose between 1969 and 1986. the expected cost of the added claims will be more than $47 million. enough is enough, that's what aaa is saying after the massive closure on the george washington memorial parkway, the northbound lanes were closed from the spout road to cia exit more than 12 hours yesterday. a tour bus engine exploded and sent debris and oil all over the road. sand was used to sop up the oil but some of it had already made its way down seven different drains. and that required more time and more extensive clean-up process. >> we're working with the coast guard and the hazmat contractors to contain that and make sure it doesn't spread. >> the national park service manages the parkway. aaa released a statement saying a closure shows the park

>> reporter: well, good morning, eun. as you said there has been a huge outpouring of support from all across the country and right here in the washington, d.c. area. here in washington, there are going to be two prayer vigils today. the first one that will happen here at metropolitan ame church in northwest washington. the pastor said the tragedy of what happened in south carolina demands that people of faith who abhor violence come together and pray for the victims of this massacre. now, this vigil is going to be held today here at noon. a second vigil is going to be held here in washington later on this evening. the national black united front going to hold an interfaith prayer vigil. that is going to be held at the african-american civil war memorial, that's set to get underway right outside the metro station at 7:00. darcy spencer.

buyers at gun point. police in prince george's county will give us more information on those cases and provide safety tips at police headquarters. this morning at 10:00 a.m. you can stop the unwanted robo calls thank you. the fcc says companies like verizon and at&t and others aren't duty bound to connect the annoying robo calls if you don't want them. you can now tell them not to put them through. the fcc was wanted to clarify the rules. there are rules that require the phone company to connect every call. looking at capitol hill, the senate has crossed a huge item off the list, but the president is threatening a veto. they will keep some military bases open, however, the bill will make it harder for the president to close the u.s. military prison at guantanamo bay. it also skirts some spending

a developing story this morning. u.s. marshals have added two violent escapees from the new york prison to the 15 most wanted list. david sweat and richard matt escaped on june 6th from the clinton correctional facility in dannemora. police aren't sure if they left the area. officers have followed more than 1,200 leads. the u.s. marshal service says the most wanted fugitive list is reserved for the worst of the worst. the woman at the center of a cultural firestorm no longer part of a city volunteer police commission.

the spokane city council voted yesterday to remove rachel dolezal from the volunteer police ombudsman commission. the commission says she and two others were guilty of workplace harassment. dolezal was thrust into the public spotlight last week after her parents claim she's been misrepresenting herself as black for years. it's now time to turn our attention to the forecast. it is in the 70s. and a little bit muggy right now. >> it's been a little bit damp. tom is here to tell us about that. >> well, yesterday it was so humid, got to 90 and then the storms came through and cooled us down. a few lingering sprinkles on storm team 4 radar in north central montgomery county from near laytonsville to potomac. across to fairfax county and near reston and in parts of loudoun county getting a few scattered sprinkles but elsewhere some low clouds that are beginning to break up a

a big massive breach the federal workers today is the deadline for the office of personnel management to notify more than 4 million workers that their records were compromised. opm director katherine archuleta said tuesday a separate data breach may have compromised current, former and prospective employees. today marks the major milestone in the eradication of slavery in this country. it's the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the united states. some groups are using this day

to remember the victims of the church shooting in charleston. one of the groups is the national black united front. they're holding a vigil at the african-american civil war memorial tonight at 7:00. a woman sexual assaulted ten years ago said she felt utterly helpless the day she was attack attacked by jesse matthew. last week, he was indicted in the attack. the mother of morgan harrington was at the victim impact hearing. matthew has been linked but not charged in her murder. >> i wore purple for morgan harrington. pink for alexis murphy and orange for hannah graham. today i chose rainbow because i wanted to wear colors to represent the many many numbers of victims of sexual assault. it's 5:46. two men wanted for the role in the fifa bribery investigation are now in custody.

they turned themselves in in buenos aires. the argentine businessman and son conspired to win and keep media rights contracts by paying millions of dollars in bribes. another man involved turned himself into italy last week. we'll find out out if they'll face extradition to the united states. and a fire jumped a river and destroyed three homes. it started yesterday near sacramento. it spread quickly after hopping the river fueled by vegetation on both sides. more than 100 people were evacuated from their homes. no one was hurt. the prince william county board of supervisors reportedly discussed salary increases for themselves in a closed door meeting. according to an exclusive report on inside nova that's a possible violation of the

virginia freedom of information act. according to the board's agenda they were expected to vote today on plan to give themselves pay raises of more than 20% next year. that plan was never discussed or voted on during the open portion of the meeting. prince george's county police want to make sure you and your family are safe whether you drive or walk across one of the most dangerous intersections in the county. they'll be handing out flyers for a second straight day at the intersection of marlboro pike and kipling parkway in upper marlboro. officers are telling drivers to slow down and pedestrians to look both ways. the goal is to educate you about how to use and yield to crosswalks. with pedestrian safety a concern in d.c. neighborhoods, people are taking action. they took to the streets to bring attention to the danger of simply walking through the city. in recent weeks there have been two deadly accidents involving pedestrians in washington. david mchale walked in support of his friend who was killed earlier this month. >> you know, we love the fact there's awareness now for pedestrians, you know, for the accident that occurred. and we would like to see something done by the city.

tom, we have been dealing with a lot of rain. >> we are getting a nice break thankfully. we had a lot of lightning yesterday, reports of hail as well. all around our region this morning, things are really settling down nicely. and later today we'll be seeing our temperatures by 8:00 climbing into the mid 70s and then by noontime the low to mid 80s. but it is still very humid. we'll have the humid conditions with us here as we get into the afternoon hours. and temperatures all around the area up around 90 degrees by mid to late afternoon with a few scattered storms around. and then as we get into saturday, temperatures into the upper 80s. then saturday night that we'll likely get some thundershowers coming on through. some of those thundershowers could be producing some heavy downpours. these are the remnants of tropical storm bill coming up our way late saturday night and perhaps into sunday morning. then sunday afternoon maybe a few scattered afternoon showers a small chance of that. but still very humid. highs around 90 or so. then mid 90s on monday and

rather steamy and then as we get into the rest of the week, each afternoon, tuesday wednesday and thursday a chance of a few passing storms. maybe a bit cooler with highs in the mid 80s by the time we get toward the end of the week. and as we take a look at the current radar, we are getting a few scattered sprinkles to our north and west. those few scattered sprinkles are beginning to track a little bit off to the south and east and getting a little bit closer to the metro area. but they really are really dissipating right now. we don't have much in the way of any more rain falling for this morning. later this afternoon that we'll probably get a few of those isolated thundershowers coming through. no more hail likely. no more damaging wind. just a few passing light thundershowers this afternoon. now, we have had some problems on the roads early this morning. now we have problems on the rails. melissa what's going on with the rails? >> right now, red line is single

he will talk about his mistake, his suspension and what the future holds for him. maryland is losing business from hollywood to hollywood. hbo announced yesterday they will move production of the political comedy "veep" out of maryland to southern california. it was granted millions through an expanded tax program in california. the california offered a better deal, prompting that move. well as soon as we get word on price harper's status for today's nats game we'll pass that information on to you. during the sixth inning last night, harper was making a routine throw from the outfield. his back foot slipped in the wet grass. he didn't finish the game. the team is calling harper's injury a mild hamstring strain. the nats take on the pirates at home tonight. #changes are coming to

fort totten because of late-clearing road work. could be a slow morning. eun? the man police say is behind a deadly and disturbing hate crime in charleston, south carolina, will be back in court. this as communities across the country and here in washington remember the lives of the nine people gunned down in their own church. but first, developing in the district, police investigating a deadly shooting in northwest. the shooting happened just before midnight along fifth street. the victim was shot in the back and later died at the hospital. police have not released any details about a suspect or a motive. look at storm team 4 radar. powerful storms are moving out of our area, but they left behind a huge mess. take a look at the right side of your screen. trees and branches fell on the ground. some on top of houses. news4's megan mcgrath has a better look at some damage from reston. megan, look at that huge tree behind you. >> reporter: i know. we're in a neighborhood that has

a lot of really mature, huge trees and you can see behind me here that one of them fell. thankfully, not a direct hit on this house here, but you can see that it did clip the side of their garage here. quite a bit of damage to their garage. this storm packed quite a punch for some people in our viewing area. some pockets of very violent winds and torrential rains and you can see the damage that was done in the path of that storm. now also on the same street we're on trotter lane here in reston. we found another tree that actually went into the house. take a look at this video here shot a short time ago. that tree sliced basically in half the upper floor of that home. a lot of damage there. they were able to put a tarp over top of it to prevent the rain from getting inside the home. but a lot of damage done there. take a look at this other piece of video here. shot by one of our viewers. some people saw hail and you can see here marble sized hail.

this was shot in the chantilly area during the storm and quite a sight to see. up some folks had -- some folks had quite a bit of damage wind. we are getting reports of power outages. some of the tree limbs that came down. they actually took out the power lines and so there's still some issues with that just a lot of clean-up to be done for certain neighborhoods in our area. now with more on the weather we'll take it over to tom. >> oh it's tranquil and serene. a few scattered sprinkles, north and west of the metro area. that will really dissipate over the next hour or so. some of the pavement is still wet. breaks in the clouds by 8:00. upper 70s, mid 80s by noon and partly sunny. back to you. >> thanks, tom. right now some red line proble
