forcing crews to shut down the run. we're working to learn more about what happened and whether anyone was hurt. >> breaking news. he confessed. nbc news reports dylann roof told police he did it shortly after his arrest. he is charged with nine counts of murder at the historic church. and possession of a firearm. also new this morning, the suspect reportedly admitted he almost backed out because the people at the bible study group were so nice to him but decided to go through with his, quote mission. right now the 21-year-old is locked up in a detention center waiting for a bond hearing. this morning south carolina's governor told nbc the shooter should get the death penalty. long after dylann roof leaves court today his victim's

families and the community will be dealing with the anguish of losing loved ones. flowers will become burials and tears. the pain is palpable. >> reporter: it's still raw. it's not any less sad but maybe there's something about people coming here and being around so many people who are trying to make each other feel better that it's helping in some way. you know dylann roof may have tried to drive black and white people apart, but we've seen that he may have accomplished exactly the opposite. >> she's black and i'm white but we're the same. >> we bleed the same. >> reporter: the governor was here at the church earlier where she sent dylann roof a clear message on how they'll prosecute the case. >> i have no problem with the death penalty. in south carolina, you do something like this to nine

are left cleaning up the mess. roof and top floor a burned out mess. it will be months before they can live in their home again. lightning struck the roof last night causing a fire. >> the attic burned, charred all over. the ceilings are gone because of the wood. it seeped into the first floor. the ceiling is falling in the first floor now too. >> reporter: in other communities it wasn't the lightning. it was the wind that caused problems. >> it hit the roof and chipped. these are concrete. >> reporter: tree limbs and leaves litter the yard. the garden no longer pristine. it didn't last long but the storm was pretty intense. >> first just rain. just a little bit of rain, and then a ton of rain and then a sheet of rain, and i was in the kitchen and all of a sudden this hit the side of the house.

>> it came on suddenly and strong. you could not see through the rain. and the wind was just picking up and howling. >> down the street on trotter lane whole trees came tumbling down. one sliced right through the second familiar of this home. a few houses away, another tree smashed into a garage. and as people begin to clean up they'll keep an eye on the sky. there's a chance of storms again this morning. news 4 megan mcgrath. >> now to a developing story. more than a dozen people were hurt in upstate new york. the u.s. coast guard says the 286 boat hit. we're told 17 people had to be taken to the hospital. nobody was seriously hurt. all of the water had to be drained from the lock. the ship will have to be moved. the cause of the crash is now

under investigation. >> in the last two hours we've learned a 2-year-old found at the bottom of a pool this week died. on sunday the boy was found in a three to four foot deep area of the pool. the boy had gone to the park with his parents and siblings. life performed cpr and the boy was taken to the hospital. the incident is under investigation. >> we're still working to find out more about this deadly shooting in northwest d.c. the shooting happened just before midmidnight. the victim was shot in the back and later died at the hospital. police have not released any information about the victim j suspect or motive. >> a big step in the search for missing prisoners and why today is the reason you could l

>> a developing story this morning. u.s. marshals have added two violent escapees from a new york prison to the most wanted list. they escaped on june sixth from the clinton correction cal facility in new york. police are not sure if the pair have left that area. officers have followed more than 1200 leads. the u.s. marshal service says the most wanted list is reserved for the worst of the worst. >> a live look at the capitol

police say dylann roof has confessed. he says he almost didn't go through with his plan because the people in the church were so nice to him. roof is due in court just a few hours from you. the governor says roof deserves the death penalty if he's connected. a friend of roof's said he used to make racist jokes. >> he wanted white with white and black with black and that he didn't, he didn't believe in what the black race was doing to the white race. >> he says he knew it was roof when he saw the images. he says he called the fbi immediately. we've just posted more on our app. search for dylann roof. >> a florist is being praised this morning. her heart raced when he noticed

the driver of a familiar car next to her. she saw a white male with a bowl haircut. she called her boss who contacted police. she followed the car for two miles. listen to her explain what happened next? >> i'm going to turn back around and see if they at least pull him over. you know? if i can get close enough to see if they pulled him over, and he said, that was him. and they caught him. i'm crying every time. >> the phone and that flower shop continues to ring off the hook. >> just in, comcast founder ralph roberts has died this morning. this morning the company announced his passing of natural causes at the age of 95. he served as the chairman emeritus. he started with little buying a small cable system in mississippi in 1963 and worked to create one of the country's

biggest cable and high speed communications companies. his son, brian now serves as chairman and ceo. comcast is the owner of nbc, universal and the parent company of nbc 4. in just the last hour we're learning more details about how a group of men used craigslist to rob people. they pretended to be buyers but then pulled guns on unsuspecting killers. we attended a news conference. what are police saying? >> reporter: if you've ever used craigslist to buy or sell something j pay attention. it's not just happening here. it's happening everywhere. and this is what the thieves are after. they're after the iphone 6. a lieutenant displayed two pictures, two pictures of guns that they recovered in this investigation. one of them is a real again.

it's a.38 reinvolve. the second is a replica but if you have this gun pointed at your head, you're going to think this is the real thing and give up whatever they want. these robbers are using the same old tactics as we've heard before. you meet up, they ask to see the phone that you're selling. you pull out the phone. they pull out the gun. they rob you and get away. fortunately no one has been hurt. the gun was never fired. but it's something that could become even more dangerous. police are, again, putting out these safety tips about how to protect yourself if you're doing these kinds of transactions. some of this we've heard before. that's always to meet in a public place but here's a tip that you may not have heard before. >> actually, talk to them on the phone. we have found that a lot of the meetings that are arranged they happen without ever having a verbal conversation. it's done through text or e-mail. you can find out a lot of information about a person by

talking to them on the phone. it may give you an idea of who you're dealing with. >> we're also hearing it's not just craigslist. there's an app that was used called offer up in one of these cases one of the suspects posted an ad on that app. one of the suspects we reported is 15 years old. police told us today this same suspect was arrested a couple of years ago were doing the exact same thing, and police say they are looking for maybe three or four additional suspects in connection with these cases. back to you. 84 degrees right now with scattered showers across the area. muggy as well. and also a little bit warmer, feeling more like 86 outside. here's the weekend outlook for tomorrow. hot and heemdumid. the chance of scattered late day. afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. as we get into the overnight hours, heavy rain will be moving through the area.

if you notice people's shoes making a little bit more noise than normal, take a look at what they're wearing. they probably have on their flip-flops. it's national flip-flop day but you may want to think twice about how often you wear the foot ware. the consumer product safety commission says they landed around 25,000 people in the emergency room last year. experts say you shouldn't wear flip-flops if you will be walking for a long time.

a wild fire in northern california is under control this afternoon after jumping a river and destroying three homes. the fire started yesterday. the wind driven fire spread quickly after hopping the river. more than 100 people were evacuated from their homes but no one was hurt zblrvettle. tracking heavier rain. showers along 66. back around the i-81 corridor as well. potentially seeing a few sprinkles. light rain in parts of prince william.

church in richmond has a lot of folks on edge this morning. police say a man is now in custody and will be evaluated after he threatened worshippers at a south richmond church. there's a video of the scene last night. the man was beating on a door at the united neighs church international. a member of the church said the man who was white was yelling racial slurs and making threats. >> and now to a today show exclusive. brian williams sat down to discuss his mistakes suspension and what the future holds. he was suspended after he all learned he exaggerated facts about his time covering the iraq war. >> what if these past five months been like for you? >> it has been torture. looking back it has been absolutely necessary. >> williams went onto say he let his egobet the better of him. >> this came from, clearly, a bad place a bad urge inside me.

blake shelton is being called a hero this morning. an oklahoma man says shelton came to his rescue after his truck got stuck in the mud. the man says he was pushing his stalled truck when shelton pulled up in a dodge and offered to toew him home. >> my wife called me and i said blake shelton pulled me out and he's going to bring me home. i said you'd better slick up and you know we'll be there in just a minute. >> once home, shelton even posed for a few pictures with the oklahoma man. i guess after she got herself gussied up. he said he hopes to repay the favor some day. >> here's one final check of the weather. >> continuing to track some areas of rain generally light
