ve. and i pray god on your soul. >> first at 4 today, from hatred to healing. forgiveness overflows from a south carolina courtroom today and the man accused of the massacre remains unmoved. i'm jim handly at the live desk today. just a short time ago, dylann roof made his first court appearance. the 21-year-old is accused of killing nine people inside that african-american church in charleston wednesday night. he was ordered held on $1 million bond. several relatives of his victims there addressed him directly today, many of them delivering messages of mercy. news4's chris lawrence is live in charleston. chris, a remarkable scene in that courtroom this afternoon. >> reporter: jim this was the type of confrontation that you would see at a sentencing not a bond hearing. one mother who lost her son told dylann roof we welcomed you into our bible study but she said, as was said that night, may god have mercy on you.

mashable says it confirmed this snapchat video with several friends and seems to show dylann roof inside emanuel ame. sources say roof almost backed out because the people in the prayer group were so nice. but he felt he had to complete his mission. this afternoon, one of the victim's daughters spoke out in roof's first court hearing. >> i will never talk to her ever again. i will never be able to hold her again. you hurt a lot of people. may god forgive you. god forgive you. >> reporter: roof is on suicide watch and isolated from the general population, but officials told me they are well equipped for this. the u.s. corrections special operations group is based in virginia, but they were here within the last month or two to provide elite training to some of the corrections officers here and if that wasn't enough, there are 700 surveillance cameras in and around the prison. roof's case could last six

months or several years a lot depends on whether prosecutors seek the death penalty but governor nikki haley made no bones about where she stands. >> you want to see hate crime, watch how we handle him that will show you how we deal with hate crimes in south carolina. you will see we will push for the death penalty and show that is not acceptable in south carolina. >> reporter: in fact, the head of the naacp called this an act of racial terrorism and says it should be treated like one. coming up on news4 at 5 and 6, we are going to dig a little deeper into the healing in this community and see where this city goes from here. reporting live in charleston, chris lawrence, news4. as investigators still work to piece together the events that led up to their murders, the nine victims of the charleston church shootings are beinged here locally at an event at the african-american civil war veterans memorial later today and later at the city's oldest ame church. at this morning's event, they were remembered as martyrs.

advances. security officers caught him forcing himself on her outside the circuit courthouse and early saturday morning, she died. at 5:00 we will have a live report on the crime and the questions that still need to be answered. a thank you to the community tonight from d.c. police chief kathy lanier. she says tips from the public helped lead to the arrest of a suspect in a teen's shooting. police arrested a man accused of shooting a 15-year-old boy who got off the bus tuesday night along naylor road in southeast. the boy is still fighting for his life. it's one of several recent shootings that had chief lanier emotionally pleading for help with unsolved cases earlier this week. a warning from police before you buy or sell anything online. right now, thieves are targeting classified websites and holding up unsuspecting sellers. three men are in custody now in prince george's county but police believe more guys preying on craigslist users out there. police tell us they are looking

for people buying and selling the iphone 6 but when the legitimate folks show up they pull out a gun. police say always talk to the buyer on the phone and meet them in a public place. some sad news this afternoon about that toddler found underwater at the popular pirate's cove swimming pool in lorton. the 2-year-old boy has died. lifeguards were clearing the pool because of lightning on sunday when they spotted the little boy. they performed cpr, which got him breathing and gave him a pulse but police don't expect to file any charges in this case. the truck struck powerlines. two roads in the laurel area are open again following an armored car accident. a truck struck a power pole and knocked down lines at brock bridge road and whiskey bottom road. traffic was disrupteded two hours while repairs were made to the power lines. developing now the white house says that president obama is set to make an historic tripful we will tell you where he is going and why it is a big deal. plus, why this father's day

temperature right now at reagan national, 87 degrees. partly to mostly cloudy skies across the area. most of us dry right now. most of us are going to be dry this evening. just some isolated showers. 6 p.m., temperature around 84.

new york. the two escaped killers are now on the u.s. marshal's list of 15 most wanted fugitives. david sweat and richard matt escaped on june 6th now. a $25,000 reward is offered for either man. investigators have looked into about 1300 tips. coming up, we are going to have an update on the work to track them down now. right now crews are working to remove a cruise ship that crashed into a river lock in upstate new york. about 275 people were on board when the st. laurent hit a wall in the st. lawrence sea way last night. two of the 130 people hurt are still in the hospital. all are french citizens. it is not known what caused that crash. d.c. delegate, eleanor holmes norton says the elevators at the washington monument are safe. norton met with national park service technicians this morning. they discovered long-term solutions to the electrical issues that caused the elevator to shut down recently. the popular tourist site was closed for nearly a week. norton says she's satisfied the

parks service has made the necessary corrections to keep that elevator going. several hundred people still without power after last night's severe storms but one virginia community wishes power was their only problem. holes in a roof and on walls could have some out of their homes for weeks. i'm mark segraves in reston where they are cleaning up after last night's storm. the sound of chainsaws and wood chippers can be heard everywhere as crews clean up the mess. dozens of homeowners are dealing with bigger problems like crushed cars and crushed homes. and there are several houses that they can no longer live in, like this one here that had a tree go right through a bedroom wall. >> incredible video now. we want to turn to storm team4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer who is getting the forecast ready for us. this has been some pretty intense rain over the past couple of days and doesn't look like it is going to let up.

>> this weekend could be pretty wicked. is that right, doug? >> yeah, rill think so. if you have plans tomorrow night, tomorrow night is really the time period that we are concerned about. and there is some concern there for real, as you make your way out through the next couple of days. like i said for real not like we are joking. anyway. sorry. show what you is happening outside now no big deal do have cloud cover across the region today, still, very warm, very humid 87 degrees heat index, 91 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. we move on through the next day or so, temperatures are going to stay warm. 87, d.c. but only 84, fredericksburg. gaithersburg, 81. 77 in frederick. more cloud cover there even a couple of showers up and around that region. if you're headed to the nats game tonight no problems. could we see a shower? yes, possible, but i think we will get the game in, no problem at a all. we take on the pirates tonight temperatures, 83. 75, 8:01 by the seventh inning. last, 79. friday night is per pent. showers, up toward howard county now, a couple move in across our region, most of the day, dry.

tonight easy, friday night. saturday night, a completely different story. s here the remnants of tropical storm bill. you notice the spin here in the atmosphere, that spin moves our bay. tonight, once again isolated shower or two. then by tomorrow, no problems. tomorrow morning no problems. we will see some cloud cover, maybe a couple of showers back to the west of the mountains maybe down toward the afternoon but watch what happens by around 1:00. start to see a few more showers popping up and then watch what happens during the late afternoon. we see even more showers and some thunderstorms. tilt, we could start to see some very heavy downpours and then the system really works in. and look at these storms here. once again very heavy rain associated with this. this is tropical in characteristics. look at that around 11:00 tomorrow night, why we have the flash flood watch in effect includes just about everybody. does not include you folks down toward extreme southern maryland or fredericksburg. everybody else in that flash flood watch potential of one to two, maybe even three inches of rain. by sunday, it's out of here why we have a high temperature back into the mid-90s, 93 degrees

this is recommendation and what we are already starting to see on metro is that they are reacting to what the ntsb is telling them what we found is metro hasn't installed things the way that they should have been doing. and so already what metro is doing is taking proactive steps to go into the system fix things and that's leading to more delays. we are at a really critical point in the system right now where they need to get in and do this work but it comes at the expense of riders where we have to wait longer for trains. >> be looking forward to your reports all next week on this big metro hearing. thanks adam. i'm wendy rieger at the live desk. we are working to learn more about a shooting in charles county and the discovery of an unconscious baby. chopper4 just arriving over the scene. this is a home on dove tree court in indian head, maryland. police say a woman arrived home to find her husband or her boyfriend dead of an apparent suicide. and a 3-month-old baby was found unconscious. not breathing. first responds have now rushed

that child to the hospital. police aren't sure what happened. we will continue to follow this and bring you any developments as we get them. back to you. >> all right thanks wendy. on this afternoon, word that new life will come to the stories of slaves who lived in loudoun county. today, reverend michelle thomas announced plans to build the loudoun freedom center. the idea came when she accidentally discovered a burial site on grounds the congregation purchased to build a church. the center will feature educational and interactive tools that allow folks to research their history through dna. >> these people have names. they have lives. they have stories. and we are gonna endeavor to tell those stories through science. >> the group is trying to act quickly on the project before more burial grounds are lost. for example, their research discovered a slave cemetery exists beneath this ashburn community pool. flooding left an oklahoma man stranded until he got some help from a country music superstar. a local doctor's life saved.

commission. the spokane city council voted yesterday to remove rachel dolezal from the city's volunteer police ombudsman commission. the commission says dolezal and two other members were guilty of workplace harassment. dolezal was thrust into the public spotlight, you will recall, last week after her parents claim she has been misrepresenting herself as black for years. she resigned from her post with the naacp. he used me as a willing vessel, but the lord used me. >> aware and alert. how that woman spotted this man accused in the charleston church shooting. >> and that suspect appeared in court a short time ago and he faced the families of his alleged victims. their powerful

a vigil will be held in charleston, south carolina for the men and women gunned down during prayer. nbc's jay gray is live in charleston where new details are emerging about what took place inside that historic black church. jay? >> reporter: yeah, erika, jim, and we are just getting information out -- an affidavit released by the court, just now that indicates that dylann roof stood over one of the witnesses, one of the survivors inside the prayer meeting, and spoke to that witness using racial epithets while he was speaking to them walked into the prayer meeting apparently baring a fanny pack, walked out carrying the weapon that he used, according to that affidavit. look, this is a day where he has appeared in court heard from the first time from family members of the victims as hundreds now continue to gather in this city to honor those lost. i'm setting your bond, young

man, at $1 million. >> reporter: as accused killer dylann roof stood in court today the most powerful words did not come from the judge. >> i just want everybody to know he forgive you. >> reporter: roof stared straight ahead as family members of the victims talked about their loss. the 21-year-old has apparently confessed to carrying out the massacre inside the emanuel ame church. at one point even telling investigators he almost didn't go through with it because everyone was so nice to him. today, south carolina governor nikki haley made it clear his punishment should be anything but nice. >> we will absolutely want him to have the death penalty. this is the worst hate that i have seen and the country has seen in a long time. >> reporter: as the legal process and investigations continue, we are now learning more about the personal side of this horror. witnesses say 26-year-old taiwan za sanders tried to took roof out of shooting others before he was killed. reverend sharon da coleman

that you can pay tribute to those killed in charleston and show support for their families. we have got a list of vigils in our area in our nbc washington app. just search charleston vigils. turning now to storm team4 meteorologist amelia segal tracking a little rain to start your weekend off. amelia? >> all eyes on tomorrow night when heavy rain will be moving through the area, bringing the threat of flash flooding. right now, on storm team four meager showers panhandle of west virginia, far western maryland and baltimore area. the d.c. metro area dry right now. here is the timeline for the rains saturday evening. 5 p.m., tracking scattered thunderstorms, thunderstorms could have very heavy rain gusty winds. by 8:00 steady moisture the remnants of bill moves into the area and with that, flash flooding concerns as we head into the overnight hours. most of the area under a flash

he attributeded to an old surgery. keith was an executive at medstar washington hospital center in washington, d.c., ignored the symptoms for more than a year, 15 months. finally, he mentioned the problem to a colleague after a meeting, saying the pain and discomfort only occurred when he was exerciseingexercising. >> and that's what got me concerned. >> reporter: that colleague was a cardiologist, dr. stuart sidedies. he ordered tests immediately. >> you can see how tight the blood vessel s. >> reporter: that's not as sid reflux but extensive coronary artery disease. keith required triple bypass surgery. the doctor says men need to speak up when they have any kind of pain between their neck and stomach. >> and if it occurs in a pattern with exercise and is relieved by rest you need to seek medical attention. >> reporter: keith was lucky. several months of cardiac rehabilitation has him back on his bike. >> knowing it is going to take

more now on the charleston church shooting and the suspect's first court appearance since wednesday's massacre. dylann roof appeared on video and showed little emotion as he was charged with nine counts of murder. the judge then set bond at $1 million. relatives of the shooting victims also spoke at the hearing with one victim's daughter crying when she told roof, "i forgive you." faith communities here and across the country are holding vigils and services all in an effort to help people heal from this tragedy.

this country. >> john stewart, the host of the daily show put jokes aside last night and addressed the tragedy in his monologue. let's take a listen to this clip. >> i honestly have had nothing other than just sadness. and that's the thing. al qaeda, all those guys isis, they are not [ bleep ] compared to the damage that we can apparently do to ourselves on a regular basis. >> and his comments were really resonating with folks that i saw on social media and the -- something else that he said is he feels for those folks that live in south carolina who have to drive down the street with roads that have -- that have been named after confederate generals on a daily basis, things like that really just driven into the psyche and the ground swell of that state in particular. >> and this gunman troy drove around in a car with a confederate flag on the plate. it's ignited this whole debate about the confederate flag

again, in part, because there are pictures of him not only wearing other flags that many see are racist emblems from south africa, apartheid days, but also this license plate, too. so it's reignited this whole debate down there. >> which is interesting. the folks that i talked to are really interested in the responses that they heard from governor haley, from some of the elected officials who are strong on saying that this young man needs to go to the electric chair. but when it comes to lowering that flag from that area near the state capital, they are really saying we are not really going to move on that. that's resonating with people. this is an ongoing conversation that south carolinians have talked about for a long time and it is now forced back into the situation. how can this flag be flying not even at half-staff for fellow citizens of south carolina that have been killed? >> troy, as we were talking, this is so much bigger than one person. a lot of people are wondering, i can't get this out of my mind,

hey everybody, blake shelton here. he is a country music superstar and a coach on nbc's "the voice." now we can add another title to blake shelton's resume how about first responder? on wednesday in oklahoma, a guy got his pickup stuck in rising floodwaters. blake shelton pulls up in a big truck and he towed hartman's stalled truck out of the water and even gave him a ride home. >> wow. >> my wife called me. i said blake shelton pulled me

out and he is gonna go ahead and bring me on home. i said you better -- you better slick up and, you know, we be there in just a minute. >> yeah! you better slick up. i like that. hartman says he and shelton hit it off pretty well on the ride home. he says the country singer is, in his words, a good fella. firefighters say they are at the mercy of the winds as they try to keep a wildfire away from a small town about 85 miles southeast of phoenix, arizona. the fire's been burning since wednesday and it has destroyed the least two houses. some firefighters have suffered heat-related problems because the temperatures have been about 102 degrees during the day. state forestry officials say there are no serious injuries. some good news there. and some heroes are emerging from the tragedy in south carolina. the woman whose tip led to the capture of the suspected shooter is now talking about what

happened. amy coleman has her story from shelby north carolina. >> he used me, was a willing vessel, but the lord used me today. >> reporter: and debbie dills, listening to her gut instinct led to this moment, when we all got our first look at 21-year-old dylann roof handcuffed, in custody by shelby police. his charlotte area connection started when surveillance video caught him using an atm at a shell gas station on providence road. the fbi tracked his bank account and saw the transaction. but he still made his way to kings mountain and the blackdie police released pictures of to the media pictures dills saw on the news and recognized on the road, so she called a friend. >> and i called todd and i said, todd, i think i have just passed that boy that killed those people in charleston last night. >> reporter: her friend called police and soon shelby police stopped roof and arrested him on dixon street in shelby. quickly, charleston police and the fbi made their way to the

station to work together. >> through the cooperation of law enforcement, the community and the media this suspect was apprehended. >> reporter: with nothing to say, wearing a bulletproof vest roof was taken from police department to the cleveland county courthouse where he appeared before a judge to await extradition to charleston. when he appeared again now in federal custody, he had prisoner garb, ready to be escorted to the airport. once there, he was taken on to a plane, bound to charleston. dills says prayers for the families in charleston that led her to be in the right place at the right time. >> today, god used me. he used me. >> -- with jim and windy. endy. very intense, very brief. >> now the cleanup efforts are under way.

>> tough to hear our niece yelling. we begin with some live storm team to you are coverage, many of you still dealing with the damage from yesterday's tempest. >> now, folks there is a new threat of flash flooding this weekend from what's left of tropical depression bill. but first, storm team4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer with the latest. doug? >> we saw that storm yesterday out toward reston, a microburst most likely affected that when a storm really puts out wind, upwards, 70 to 80-mile-an-hour winds, had 64-mile-an-hour wind gust at dulles with one of the microbushsts, what we saw toward the reston area. today, storms, we have showers. howard county seeing showers, back toward the west berkeley, jefferson county and one shower along i-70 here between frederick and hagerstown, moving along the roadway here, down around frederick the next 15, 20 minutes. tonight, no big deal, go out friday night, piece of cake. here's what's coming tomorrow, the remnants of tropical storm bill, notice the circulation
