"news4 today" begins with breaking news. >> we're still on top of that breaking news on top of the beltway here. maryland state police telling us that ramp from inner loop i-95 is closed down because of an accident in prince george's county. >> a tractor-trailer jackknifed. no major injuries. police aren't sure how long the ramp will be shut down. just into the newsroom a car crashed into a starbucks in alexandria. got to take a look at this. you can see that the car shattered a window at the starbucks. this is at the popular bradley shopping center on king street. alexandria police sent out these pictures in the last half hour. no one was hurt. and we know that the storms are gone, moving out. but the damage has been done. hail and thunderstorms hitting mclean, virginia, pretty hard

here. lightning in alexandria. while crazy, no other way to describe it. it gave people quite the show. news 4's derrick ward getting a closer look at the storms in fairfax fairfax. >> reporter: here in fairfax county, a close call, closer than you can imagine. not only did this tree come down and miss the house but it missed something much more precious. >> we were actually standing outside. my son was getting a ready to get into the car with his grandmother to go on a trip and we heard a popping noise in the vicinity. we looked to see what was happening and in slow motion it started falling. i was standing by the door of the house and i just could yell run run run. at first, he was stunned. he didn't know what to do. he took off running to the garage. thank goodness because he would have been crushed by the tree. he's standing where i was right now, which is where the brunt of the tree fell. nothing was damaged other than our friend's car and we're all

safe. >> reporter: and residents are crediting the fairfax county police with their quick response with chain saws to help clear this street. >> now, chuck bell says will be a scorcher, but there is the possibility of some more rain too, right? >> yeah, widespread coverage like yesterday, not going to happen. widespread severe weather like yesterday not going to happen. that being said we have that standard issue 20 to 30% chance of thunderstorms to bubble up. humid outside and temperatures will be well up into the 90s once again. that's enough instability to cook up a few storms but we aren't facing an organized widespread severe weather threat like yesterday. a quiet start this morning. temperates are mostly in the 70s and 80s. temperatures will be as i mentioned well up into the 9 0s as we head into the afternoon hours. looking out at the dulles international airport, there's the main check-in spot. a good looking day across

northern virginia. nothing on storm team 4 radar for now. we'll be dry over the next several hours. if you're flying up to providence today you may have some delays. temperatures already 85. 82 at reston and manassas and 79 in college park. maybe you're taking dad out to the ball game today. playing the pirates first pitch 1:35. it will be a hot, humid day at the ballpark. only an isolated thunderstorm chance by late in the game. they should have no trouble finishing it off. if you're doing outdoor grilling, peak time to watch out for the storms is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. back to work forecast is coming up. right now the first worship service is underway at the church massacre in south carolina. this is a live look at the faithful inside the emanuel ame church in charleston. the police officers are stationed inside the church here. nine people were shot and killed when a gunman opened fire during bible study on wednesday. and we're learning more about the suspected shooter.

now home. but six others are in the hospital following a shooting at a block party. philadelphia police say three children were hurt including an 18-month-old baby who was shot in the neck. they say the shooter had a shotgun. they're working right now to track him or her down. in detroit one person died at another shooting in a block party overnight. it hit ten people on a party on a basketball court. eight are in serious condition. one is in critical condition. police have not arrested anyone yet. d.c. police telling us the name of the man someone killed a few days ago. they say jewells johnson was homeless and he was stabbed on calvert street northwest. this happened friday night. derrick ward brought us the story yesterday. and a 16-year-old died following a shooting in southeast d.c. police say malik mercer died yesterday morning. investigators say he was shot in the back as he stepped off of a bus. it happened on wednesday near

the intersection of 28th street and naylor road. police arrested 22-year-old derryck decuir. he is charged with assault with intent to kill. coming up in the day ahead, the family of a d.c. reporter shot and killed by a stray bullet will hold a vigil. charnice milton was shot by a man on a dirt bike back in may. the vigil will happen at 3:00 this afternoon at marvin gay park. we're looking at seven after the hour on this sunday morning. in the week ahead, douglas hughes is heading to court. he's the man who flew that gyrocopter miles into the city, then landing on the west lawn of the capitol. right now hughes is forbidden from going near the national mall. coming up fairfax county schools could add sexual orientation andend gender identity to the classes this week.

you're watching "news4 today." >> grief and shock turning to healing after the horrible church shooting. >> today, the church will open the doors for sunday service. but the debate about gun control and violence is picking up again in the u.s. joining us to talk about it is moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd. i know we a get to the debate and -- we'll get to the debate and discussion about race but right off the bat i want to talk about gun violence and gun control. is this another situation where we're seeing the conversation reignited after a national tragedy and it will probably be stuck when it is coming to reform. >> i don't buy the idea this is going to start -- if sandy hook didn't do it when somebody mows

down elementary school kids, this isn't going to do it either. frankly the political debate is held hostage for the gun culture and i think you could argue until that changes and you won't make -- you probably aren't going to make policy changes because that drives who gets elected and therefore who's making the laws. we have an interesting way, we're looking at gun violence, we have a video of convicted murderers who now regret and they have some testimonial that they give to camera, to their 12-year-old selves and the advice they would say about, you know, no matter what that gun makes you feel like you have, that make you feel more powerful or whatever it is, don't do it. and maybe that's where this discussion needs to move if you care about the gun violence issue. >> isn't it incredible that people are looking to the president to make the speeches

after the events and he's down four or five of them and he alluded to it the other day. >> there was a time that the presidency -- i think we see the president and when we elect him not just the executive branch of the federal government but sort of america's moral compass in many ways as well. so i think we do have that expectation of our president's now and he himself has alluded to this gun -- you know, that's the irony. like the crime rate is down overall, and yet there seems to be the massacres are up. right? it feels more frequent and it's just this sense of -- i think you could tell -- his frustration and i think there's a lot of frustration, even people who are big second amendment defenders you can't defend the culture when people are misusing the culture a little bit. it's certainly this -- you can see the president's frustration that's for sure. >> someone in the leadership position where this latest tragedy definitely hits close to home is south carolina congressman jim clyburn. i know you're speaking with him. specifically about the issue of

race and this conversation that really needs to be had on both sides. >> on both sides. why someone -- it's a powerful piece i read by president obama's head of the faith based initiative that are part of the white house. and he said, you know, we always call the conversations and you know what, maybe whites need have a conversation amongst themselves why some whites are raised not to be racist and some are and where does this come from and how does we get rid of this stain of racism? this is basically his argument, hey, this is on the white community to cleanse themselves of this racism and what can be done and is that where the next tough conversation needs to happen? >> right. not an easy conversation by any stretch of the imagination. thank you chuck. >> that's why we have "meet the press." to have the uncomfortable conversations. >> you can see "meet the press" every sunday right after "news4 today." well, take a look at your

got some breaking news into the newsroom. our nbc affiliate in new orleans says police have arrested a man suspected of killing a police officer. they say travis boyce shot and killed the officer yesterday. they say he somehow got a gun while handcuffed in the back of the police car. they found him an hour ago. well, we are days away from the 2015 world police and firefighter games in fairfax. one local competitor said his motivation to save lives stems from a time when he nearly lost his own. >> jim handly met up with him in fairfax where he talked about his inspiring road to recovery. >> ended up breaking three vertebrae. i was medevaced to the hospital. >> reporter: it was the last time he'd ever race his
