i'm darcy spencer. in southwest washington, streets were block off for hours tonight just blocks from the capital. i'll tell you what it was all about. breaking right now, a new jersey father's day cookout

interrupted by gunfire. several people are injured. and a pair of airplane emergencies. putting travelers on edge. an unruly passenger forced one flight to land. we're going to see what happened on the other flight. good evening. heavily armed officers next to washington's big museum. tonight we've learned that it was all because of a bomb threat. darcy, do they know what or who was behind this? >> as far as we know, erica, at this point they do not know who was behind it. there's been no arrests no one in custody and this all happened at this building the capital gallery building right here behind me in southwest. there was a man who was briefly detained inside the building. as it turned out, he had nothing to do with it. he just happened to show up for work on a sunday afternoon.

>> no idea what was going on. >> receipt collins was brought out of the capital office building in handcuffs. he said he was here doing some work, had no idea police were searching the building. >> they saw me. they didn't know who i was or what i was doing. so they asked me to get down on the floor. they just secured me and took me down. so they said something is going on and they're trying to identify who i am. >> a police source tells me heavily armed officers entered the building on maryland after after they got a call from someone claiming to have a gun. then a second call came in and claiming to have a gun. 4 1/2 hours later, police pulled down the tape. apparently, nothing found. >> a little inconvenience, but i understand they have to take precautions and make sure everyone is safe. >> the investigation sht down roads near the education and transportation department across from the air and space museum

and down the block from the plaza metro. dozens of people many tourists couldn't get back to their car. >> how long have you been waiting to get your car? >> three hours. >> when police pulled down the tape, they raced to their cars to finally start heading home after a memorable day in the nation's capital. >> it's definitely not the best thing, but kind of exciting i guess. >> so certainly exciting for some people but a lot of people were held up today in trying to get home. the man who wa detained told us he was not upset about his experience today. he says police were professional and courteous. we are live in southwest, erica, back to you. >> thanks so much, darcy. now to breaking news out of new jersey at least four people are hurt after a shooting at a father's day cookout. police say some of them may not survive. this happened near a park in jersey city. we just got some video into our news room. it's unclear what sparked this

officers and members of mother emanuel want to say thank you. come on, you ought to know it's true. >> they called it a service of healing, a celebration of lives lost with so many bringing their sorrow to mother emanuel hoping to find peace. >> meanwhile, the manhunt for two escaped killers has expanded to several locations. tonight, police are searching an area just 30 miles from the prison where richard and david sweet escaped from 15 days ago. officers are also in the small town or friendship new york, which is 350 miles away. investigators say they got a credible sighting of the escaped inmates at a nearby railroad line. new tonight a restaurant employee is being called a hero for protecting customers after a gunman walked in trying to rob the place. the restaurant in detroit was full of people this morning. customers had to hit the deck after the man started pointing a gun at everybody.

the restaurant worker grabbed a gun, shooting and killing the man. that investigation is ongoing now. smoke on a plane prompted an emergency landing this evening at los angeles international airport. investigators say the airline flight had just taken off for peru which a defective food warmer started sending smoke into the cabin. the crew landed safely. about 350 people were on board. about 390 united airlines passenger had to sleep on the floor overnight after their flight was divert because of a disrupted passenger. this is a photo inside the belfast, ireland, airport. this was a photo and then it had to be grounded because the crew had worked just too many hours. >> i happened to look underneath her neck and she was bleeding. and i panic, i started screaming, my baby got shot my baby got shot. >> a 1-year-old is the young efts of ten people injured in a

father's day block party last night in philadelphia. everybody is expected to be okay. the shooter is still on the loose and in detroit police there are also looking for the shooter in what they call a revenge shoot-out at a block party last night that killed one and injured 121 others. no sign of the driver who hit a car and raced out from the scene. our news partners at wtop sent us these pictures of the cars involved. park police say a man in a stolen park hit another dpriefr on 16th street this afternoon. the driver who was hit went to the hospital. but she is expected to be okay. people inside a starbucks in alexandria, going to get some coffee this morning got a jolt and it wasn't from the joe. check out these pictures from the bradley shopping center on king street. a driver crashed through the front window. police say nobody inside was hurt. neither was the driver. d.c. police are looking into

a violent chain of snatching incidents at the fireplace on tea street. we've pulled the police report from friday night. a man approached somebody from inside the club, asked if he had any money and then tried to reach into the vic he followed the victim upstairs into the rest room and confronted him again. that's when the chief yanked two chains from around his neck. the victim was not hurt and the suspect is still out there. stove may be to blame for a fire that broke out today in northwest d.c. firefighters were called to this home on first and o streets this morning. they got the flamed out pretty quickly, but paramedics had to rush one person to the hospital. no word tonight on how that patient is doing. all is clear tonight at the friendship heights metro station. firefighters were called to the scene this morning because of an arcing insulator. turns out, heavy rain from last night seeped into the item. there was no smoke or fire, but power on the track had to be shut down for several hours. >> certainly you're creating a

tonight politicians are being forced to go on record with where they stand on the confederate flag. for millions, a proud symbol of heritage. for many others, an ugly emblem of hate. alleged church mass cart shooter dylann roof admired the flag and it currently flies on white house grouped. white house hopefuls are being asked whether it should be removed. today, martin o'malley said yes. others, not so sure.

>> baited with this question is somehow that has anything to do whatsoever with running for president and my position is it most certainly does not. >> huckabee appeared on "meet the press." a d.c. police cruiser stepped outside the steps of the met toll pan ame church, inside, they held services honored the nine victims that died in the shooting. here at metropolitan ame they're enhancing their security, but they don't want their church to become a militarized zone. >> it is clear to us and it shall be clear to you and everyone else that we will not allow anybody to deter us from doing the work of god here at metropolitan. >> someone called in a bomb threat at the church friday following a vigil.

bomb sniffing dogs went through the church before the service and police were able to give it the all clear. a search effort is under way tonight in new mexico. crews are looking for a former white house chef who disappeared more than a week ago. and as nbc's kristin welker reports, police are following every lead that could bring him home. for more than a decade, walter shive was the white house executive chef, dazzling the bushes and the clintons with his distinctly american cuisine. but now the 61-year-old is missing after going on a hike alone in new mexico over a ek week ago. authorities have launched a massive search as friends hold on to hope. >> it's been very worrying. >> martin man ge llo, a long-time friend was the executive chef at camp david when shide served at the clinton white house. he says both in the kitchen and life, schibe always has a backup plan. >> i know this guy is cunning. he's not an average person,

"the baltimore sun" first reported the problem 16000 high school students now have the option to retake the test. college board officials say the test booklets told students they had 25 minutes to finish a reading section, but the procter only gave them 20 minutes. students who took the test on june 6th will be able to retake it for free. well, they made headlines in our area after a former worker accused of them of mistreating animals. now two zoo owners are in trouble again. eric mogenson and his daughter once owned the rest i don't know zoo. but now a federal investigation is under way into how they run a zoo in gulf breeze, florida. according to a complaint, an animal was shot as a means of euthanasia and rabbits were

allowed to eat their own babies. the two face multiple violations in virginia. in one case, they're accused of drowning a wallaby. a close call for a fairfax family county after a massive tree came crashing down during last night's storm. they were about to leave the house when they heard a popping sound. that's when a woman saw the tree falling in slow motion. her son was in the driveway and that's when she says her instincts kicked in. >> i was standing by the door of the house and i just could yell run, run, run. at first he was very stunned looking around didn't know what to do. and then he took off running towards the garage. thank god because he would have been crushed by this tree. >> the tree missed their house, but landed on the neighbor's car. residents are thanking fairfax county police for their quick response. they were able to get there with chainsaws to clear the tree from the road. first day of official summer and, boy, it was a hot one out there.

how are things looking? >> as we head into the workweek it's going to stay hot. highs in the 90s tomorrow and tuesday. the great thing about tomorrow, though, we're going to get a break from the humidity. so we'll feel more comfortable outside. but by tuesday, heat and humidity here in full force. so tomorrow, a nice, summer day. i know a lot of students now out of school. great day to go to the pool. drink plenty of water, lots of sunscreen. tuesday, it could be the hottest day so far this year when we factor in the humidity on tuesday. it could actually feel like temperatures are about 1 let you know to 110 degrees outside during the afternoon. and then as we get into the later afternoon and evening hours, some thunderstorms are possible. some of those storms potentially strong to severe. next weekend, i'm keeping a close eye on it. not because of the heat or the potential for severe weather. we could get a break from the heat with plenty of clouds and maybe showers on and off throughout the weekend. i'll have more on that when i show you the seven day. storm headlines from last night, right now, the national weather

service has no confirmed tornados, but tomorrow they're expected to at least investigation the area around brings toe and monasis for a potential tornado there. chuck is in tomorrow morning and will have the latest on that. at least by mid day. if not, veronica will be in during the evening shows, updating any information we receive on that. 1 to 3 inches of rain fell across the area last night. we had a lot of trees and branches down from gusty winds especially for those of you in virginia. some wind gusts were over 60 miles per hour. tomorrow, though the weather having a low impact on your day. night day, not too humid. plenty of sunshine. sky cast 4 showing you plenty of humidity. as we get into the lunchtime hours, we're in the 80s. upper 80s in the district. you can see here plenty of sunshine. and then as we head into the afternoon hours washington hits 90 at about 2:00. the suburbs still in the mid 80s

at that point. 4:00 p.m., we hit high temperatures for the day. d.c., about 92 93 for a high tomorrow. the suburbs will warm to near 90 degrees. as we head into the evening hours, still quite nice outside. here is the threat of showers and thunderstorms tuesday at 3:30. and then that threat continues on into the evening hours. the biggest concerns would be some heavy rain some high winds and some hail. we're going to continue to update that forecast. again, for the potential strong to severe thunderstorms later in the day on tuesday. right now, we're at 86 degrees again. a high tomorrow of 93. 97 on tuesday. that will make it the warmest day so far this year. wednesday a break from the heat and humidity, 89. and then there's next weekend, erica. high temperatures only in the low 80s. the chance of showers and thunder showers saturday and the chance of showers on sunday. >> all right. happy summer, everyone. now we want to update you to that breaking news that we told you about at the top of the show. police are now telling us that three people not four were shot at a father's day cookout
