be remembered with a park. the legacy memorial park is located at the corner of new hampshire and north dakota avenue in northeast. news4's megan mcgrath is live with a look at what the park will look like. good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning eun. it was the deadliest accident in metro's history. nine people lost their lives on this day back in 2009 when two trains collided on the tracks near the fort totten station. later today, a park is dedicated in honor of those victims and we're standing in the park here. you can see some of the design elements that we have. there are a number of these stone benches where family members can come and reflect. there are also nine abstract stone pillars representing the nine victims who died in the crash. now, it's called the legacy memorial park and it's located at the corner of new hampshire avenue and south dakota avenues. near the overpass across the tracks where that accident happened. and later on this morning there's going to be a dedication

ceremony. we're expecting a number of family members to attend as well to honor the victims and dedicate this park. i'll have more coming up later in the show. back to you guys in the studio. >> thank you megan mcgrath. right now, several d.c. police departments are trying to figure out who called in a bomb threat near the national mall. if you were downtown, you would have seen the heavily armed officers checking buildings. police told us someone claimed they had a bomb and a gun. but officers didn't find anything. we talked to one man who says he was handcuffed and forced to the ground. >> so they saw me, they didn't know who i was, what i was doing. so they asked me to get down. i'd rather have them check it out than not. so i'm grateful. >> police released that man. roads were shut down around the l'enfant plaza metro. the education and transportation department and the air and space museum. they are all reopened now. the man who set off a frenzy by landing a gyrocopter near the capitol is due back in a d.c.

court today. douglas hughes pleaded not guilty to six charges. he's currently free on personal recognizance, but he's not allowed near the capitol or the white house. today a police officer will be sentenced accused of misconduct. jerry thomas entered an alford plea in the case. that means he doesn't admit guilt but he believes that's enough evidence to convict him. the video shows him hitting and shoving a 15-year-old who was handcuffed. the boy's mother says thomas hit her son so hard his right eye was swollen shut. the incident happened in 2012. thomas has been on paid suspension. we now know that the funeral for the state senator killed in the charleston massacre will be held on tuesday. on wednesday senator clementa pinckney will lie in honor in the south carolina state house. that news comes as investigators dig into a website that may have been put up by the confessed killer. many of you have have seen an

essay and the photos posted there showing dylann roof posing with a confederate flag. sources tell nbc news the fbi believes roof did maintain that website. yesterday emanuel ame church reopened to worshipers. a comfort to grief stricken families. >> my grandpa loved charleston and to see what an example they have been to the nation his heart would just be so full. >> yesterday, hundreds marched across charleston's biggest bridge to show support for the nine people killed in wednesday's shooting. marchers met in the middle of the bridge singing "this little light of mine." massive wildfires out west this morning. firefighters are not close to containing a raging wildfire in southern california's san bernardino national forest. it's been going on for four days and has burned more than 17,000 acres. 2,000 firefighters have battling

just in, video from the afghan parliament right as it was under attack. parliament was in session for the confirmation of the ointment of a defense minister and look what happened. right at the suicide car bombers set off explosives at the entrance to the compound. security forces pushed the forces back. 25 people are hurt. most of them civilians. some of them hit by flying glass. three of those wounded are children. the taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack this morning. >> thank you, kristin. it is now 5:15. we are staying on top of a developing story in new york. state police there will hold a news conference at noon today about the on going search for the missing prisoners.

a woman reported seeing the men by railroad tracks near the new york and pennsylvania border. >> i immediately got my cell phone out of my pocket, called the dog and headed towards the house as i called 911. >> police searched an area 30 miles west of the clinton correctional facility. the men escaped more than two weeks ago. a prison worker has been charged in the escape and a corrections officer has been placed on leave. today, more high profile supreme court rulings could come down. we are watching closely for a decision on health care that affects people who live in virginia and west virginia. the case looked at whether those of you who are eligible for health care subsidies would have to buy insurance on federal exchange instead of the state exchange. we are also watching for a ruling that can legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. the court has 11 decisions left and they often deliver the most watched rulings near the end of the term. federal agents filed charges against a couple of zoo owners

in florida who used to own a zoo in our area. eric mogensen and his daughter once owned a reston zoo. now the family is facing charges about the gulf breeze zoo. the u.s. department of agriculture said there were exposed nails on rusted fences, poor cleaning and supervision and that zookeepers once shot an animal as a means of euthanasia. we expect to find out if sweet briar college will stay open for another year. a plan to keep the 114-year-old women's college from shutting down is now headed to the bedford county judge for a review. the plan is an answer to their prayers, they say. the group raised about $12 million but the school is in serious debt and faces falling enrollment. expect delays going south on the g.w. parkway. crews are expected to begin inspecting the windy run bridge on the parkway in arlington. a single southbound lane will be closed between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 this afternoon. the federal highway

administration moved up the inspection because of severe potholes. engineers will try to determine where water is getting in and whether there are other factors that are causing these potholes. tomorrow leaders from metro and d.c. fire and ems will be in the hot seat. federal investigators will hold the final hearing in the deadly underground smoke emergency. one woman died in january whenever smoke filled the l'enfant plaza. the national transportation safe tiff board will hold a two day hearing and they will talk about ventilation and training issues. in "news4 your health," a new hpv vaccine map linked to fewer cervical lesions in young women. researchers at the cdc said there was a significant drop in lesions in the 18 to 20-year-olds after the vaccine was used, but researchers are cautious in the decline may reflect a change in screening recommendations during that time frame. screenings are no longer

recommended for women under 21 so there may have been fewer reported. well, we expect an update on how well the ban on trans fats is working. the council will brief the media today around 11:30. that comes after the recent decision by the fda to ban trans fats nationally. montgomery county's program was created several years ago. we'll see if a new kind of exercise catches on across the country. it gives you a full body workout while you're on a bike. take a look. you can see people here in this class are working on their shoulders and back and abs while cycling. then they are e-mailed a workout report and they say the class sikmaing a difference. >> usually on 45-minute class, i'll burn anywhere from 600 to 700 calories. >> the class is called roll indoor cycling. right now it is only available in louisiana. well, if you suffer with social anxiety, you may want to reach for some pickles. sound strange, but researchers

who shot them and why. right now, in philadelphia police are searching for two men who opened fire on a cookout injuring ten people including three small children. this happened late saturday in west philadelphia. the youngest victim is just 1 years old. this morning, detroit police say neighbors are not talking about a shooting that killed one person at a block party. a 19-year-old man died and 11 others were hurt. police are calling it a revenge shooting. 300 people including children were at the party at the time. >> here they have a good time on saturday. that's what ticks me off. there's kids out there. i'm livid. there's no excuse, not any excuse why no one is not talking. >> police believe one man was the intended target. it is now 5:25. today president obama will host a dinner at the white house. that's the meal served at the end of the day of ramadan.

the agenda in maryland. the justice reinvestment coordinating council will talk about the prison sentencing and constructions policies. the panel was established last year with the aim of reducing the amount of people in maryland prisons and control spending. it will use it to use a data driven approach to develop a statewide framework. that meeting will take place in annapolis. the fairfax county sheriff's race is getting heated. the republican candidate brian wolf said a 37-year-old woman would be alive if stacey kincaid provided more training for her deputies to handle inmates with mental illness. wolf brought up the issue in the previous issue. the deputies tased the woman while in custody and she later died. kinkade said she's moved females to a more therapeutic environment and has brought in counselors as well. a new wrinkle in the effort to move a baseball team to

spotsylvania county. we told you that the owner of the hagerstown suns wants to move them to a new stadium off route 1. if that's not available spotsylvania supervisors were considering another site but it could be unavailable as well. "the free lance-star" says the backup plan could be claimed under a separate lawsuit filed last year. today a mobile feeding bus will make its first tour in prince william county. the shoppers mobile feeding bus aims to provide children in our area with quality meals. the bus will be unveiled this morning in manassas at 9:00 in the morning and kick off the tour just before 10:00. you can see a full list of locations. the bus will be stopping at today. the first stop is the boys and girls club in manassas and the bus will serve around 150 children at the club. uber-riders listen up. what you can no longer carry with you or face getting banned. and it could have your kids

welcome back. child protective services ruled in favor of the montgomery county couple who says it is okay to let your kids walk home alone. according to "the washington post," the agency said danielle and alexander meitiv did not neglect their 6 and 10-year-old children. police picked up the kids while they walked home alone from a park in silver springs this year. the parents have been investigated multiple times but never charged. with we know about 16 -- with know that 16,000 high school kids could retake the s.a.t.s. that's how many were affected by the misprint on the test. the test booklets said they had 25 minutes to finish the reading portion of the test, but the proctor only gave them 20 minutes. students affected will be able to retake it for free. i don't know how many people are too excited about that. >> exactly. 5:41. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. we are talking about more hot weather today. >> chuck bell in for tom kierein

usefulness. breaking down throughout the system. i don't have to tell you about the nagging problems that metro and riders have had to deal with throughout the system with problem escalators. this all starts today and this project will last three years. we're live outside the van ness metro station, back to you. >> thanks molette. a wildfire continues to burn out of control in southern california. firefighters are battling that fire at big bear lake. started on wednesday afternoon. the fire is only 15% contained and has spread to more than 23,000 miles of forest land. 90 fire engines and five firefighting planes have hit the area overnight. the cause of the fire is not known. we want to head to northern california where a wildfire is burning near the nevada border. it continues to grow. so far the fire has destroyed almost 7,000 acres. hundreds of firefighters are battle battleing this blaze. the man charged with killing

an officer in custody is waking up in jail. police arrested travis boys yesterday morning after he was on the run for 24 hours. he was spotted trying to get on a bus in new orleans. he was still wearing his handcuffs at the time. he appears to be dehydrated, he was taken to the hospital. the manhunt started saturday morning when boys was handcuffed in a patrol car. he somehow escaped and shot and killed an officer. boys is charged with first degree murder and aggravated escape. right now, the bodies of four irish students killed in a balcony collapse in california are back in ireland. the bodies and the victims' families arrived on a flight from san francisco to dublin yesterday. the families attended a private prayer service at the dublin airport. six people died when a balcony collapsed at an apartment building last week. new information expected today on who is leading the field of 2016 candidates. more information from a brand new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll will be released this evening.

a little slow southbound there hyattstown hyattstown, but no major issue. gainesville is rolling along nicely as well. back at 6:01 with more on the possible delays this morning. >> thanks, melissa. police are still trying to find the driver of a stolen car who hit another car in anacostia and then ran away. our news partners sent us these pictures. it up had near anacostia high school yesterday and the driver of the car that was hit did go to the hospital. she is expected to be okay. we don't know how long a starbucks in alexandria could be closed after someone drove into the front window. take a look at this picture. you see the driver shattered at least one window at the starbucks in the bradley shopping center on king street yesterday. alexandria police tweeted these pictures, they say no one was hurt. a young boy is safe after a massive tree narrowly missed him in northern virginia.

the boy was about to leave the house in fairfax when his mother heard the popping sound and she saw that tree falling in slow motion and saw her son in the driveway. >> i was standing by the door of the house and i just could yell run run run. at first he was very stunned, looking around. didn't know what to do and then he took off running towards the garage. thank god because he would have been crushed by this tree. >> really scary. the tree missed their house but it did land on a neighbor's car. a little girl whom a lot of us are rooting for right now comes home from the hospital today. nfl player devon still's daughter is going home. leah still has cancer and you can see this is one of her dad's instagram videos here. she is a huge hit. just adorable. leah had a setback in her treatment and had to spend some extra time in the hospital. look at her spirits, never down. right? he says that the doctors are optimistic she will make a total
