roberts road between zion drive and collinsworth drive. kristin wright is going to be live for us, 123 and ox road at braddock. she said some of ox is open but you cannot turn on to kelly drive. wide look at the beltway. no problems there. 270 at shady grove just rolling along fine. we also have more details about that deadly crash in montgomery county. storms knocked down a tree in the area of darnestown road and cattail road. the driver of a pickup truck slammed into a tree around 8:30. county police say the 79-year-old driver died at the scene. and lightning strikes hit an apartment complex in greenville causing flames to shoot out of the roof. take a look here. a woman who lives inside this complex recorded this video as the nair tore through nearly two dozen units. this is on lake side drive.

people from 22 apartments had to find somewhere else to stay last night. one woman told us when she saw the flames, she just ran and left everything behind. the drive along the gw parkway should be smoother this morning. the big tree that fell down southbound on gw parkway near route 123 is gone. crews worked overnight to clear trees blocking that area. winds got up to 60 miles an hour creating the perfect conditions all over the area. in fairfax a tree ripped out a chuck of her house where her son would be sleeping. and another tree crushed a car. nobody hurt. in montgomery county, howling winds tore an awning off a building in germantown. that landed on her mercedes. >> a big gust of wind was there. and my mother was sitting there and said that tree's going to come down, as soon as she said it, it hit it.

month. it will be a tough day in south carolina today. the coffin of state senator clementa pinckney will be placed in the state house rotunda for south carolinians to pay their respect. pinckney was one of nine people killed last week. and the citadel voted to remove a confederate flag that flies on the campus. the school board of voters voting to drop the confederate flag from its capitol. one of the victims want a lum us in. the school is waiting for the general assembly to give them permission to remove that flag. back to you. >> thanks, angie. could what happened in charleston play a role in a recent vandalism at a church in our area? and why the pastor is considering an active shooter drill? and a former white house

a former white house chef's death has been ruled an accident. walder scheid died. scheid spent 11 years leading the white house kitchen under bill clinton and george w. bush. at the live desk. right now, the storms that slammed our region are heading up the east coast. and here's a look at parts of what it did to rhode island where powerful winds wreaked havoc damaging homes and bringing up trees and bringing traffic to a stand still. it was also reported after the storms more than 800,000 residents from d.c. to new jersey were without power. in philadelphia, several hurt

right now, hurricane force winds knocked down countless trees and flipped a lot of cars. aaron. >> angie thank you. it's 5:08 on this wednesday morning. we want to get a look at your weather and traffic on the 1s. >> let's check in with storm team meteorologist chuck bell. chuck it's 67 degrees out right now. and it feels much better. >> yeah there's a collective ahh across the area. compared to yesterday. those dew points were in the mid-70s yesterday. they've dropped considerably now. and that's the way we really measure moisture in the atmosphere, is with dew points. here's a look to the northeastern sky. beautiful day out. skies have gone mostly clear during the overnight hours while you were sleeping. temperatures have dropped nicely back into the low 60s. 63 in oleaan. mid-60s in manassas and bridgeville. no slowdowns at all.

green lights morning, afternoon and evening from the weather department. as far as temperatures go, noticeably less humid temperatures upper 60s to around 70 until 8:00 in the morning. mid-70s between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. plenty of sunshine. if you're on your way home or just tourists visiting the city in the double decker bus, you can actually make use of the top of the double decker buses. it promises to be a very nice day indeed. as we get closer to the weekend i'm talk more about that in ten minutes. saturday, a chance for rain showers. good news, there are no 90s in the seven-day forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. for now, wednesday morning traffic with melissa mollet. >> good morning. a couple of updates with downed trees and wires. darnestown road at cattail road. we now have the westbound lanes open. they are flagging traffic through that way. just got off the phone with state highway.

we have breaking news right now. after a night of destructive storms, chuck bell is standing by with a quieter forecast. but there are reports of downed trees and wires. kristin wright is in fairfax county where a major road is blocked. kristin. >> reporter: yeah, hey, it's a bit of a messy situation out here. i want you to take a look. we're at the intersection of braddock and ox road. you can see the barriers set up here. this is right in front of university mall, right near the campus of george mason university. you see all of the orange and white barriers set up here at the traffic lighting of this intersection is out. you have a lot of police activity here trying to kind of

handle the track situation which will get worse as the morning goes on. this is because of downed wires in the area. up the road here right at ox road and kelly, another bit of a situation, a downed tree and wires down in that area. you can't turn on to kelly road from ox because of it. and there's a little bit of a lane closure there. but really the main problem is the intersection of ox road and braddock this morning. if you are traveling westbound on braddock, right at the intersection of ox, you can get through the intersection, and you can make a right turn on to ox road. but you can't make that left turn. again, that's if you're traveling westbound on braddock. and again, partial closure here the at this major intersection. as we're told that this will definitely go on into the morning rush. so be aware and give yourself a little bit of extra time if you're traveling in this area. back to you, guys.

15 after 5:00 a.m. now. as you know, the racially motivated shooting in charlestown, south carolina, is sparking conversation across the country. bus boys and poets, the restaurant, hosted a packed house for conversation about the shooting, despite the depraveity of the killing business was a big issue last night. >> if you go for the opposition of it, we forget that in ourselves. >> people were urged to focus less on the symbol itself but more on the politics that have kept it relevant today. more retailers have stopped selling confederate flag, walmart target, sears, amazon and google online have dropped merchandise bearing the confederate flag. one of the nation's largest flagmakers say they will not make the flag anymore either.

government is facing backlash over the symbols. here in virginia the governor is moving to banish the confederate flag from state license plates. the baltimore sun reports maryland governor larry hogan is against using the flags on lates and will address the issue soon as well. alabama, mississippi, louisiana, tennessee, texas and kentucky are being called to remove confederate flag and symbols. less than 24 hours after the shooting in charlestown, vandals struck at a predominantly black church in maryland. this is not a hate crime. you can see the words satan and other symbols spray painted all over the side of the church. people there are on edge especially after the shooting. >> they initially concluded it to be a hate crime but i think they've downgraded that. >> prince george's county say this is not considered a hate crime because it wasn't directed at a specific person.

and there isn't any evidence shutting the church was targeted because of race. it's 5:18. you can learn more about the million man march. the leader louis farrakhan will officially announce his vision for the 2015 march. that will take place at the metropolitan ame church on northwest. the march celebrating the gathering of african-americans in the district. this year's theme is "justice or else." news4 your health, living in a city with traffic noise may shorten your life. researchers researched the noise. death rates were higher in those who experienced high daytime traffic noise. stroke rates were also higher. researchers say this may be due from blood pressure from sleeping and stress caused by the noise. aren't pas sparents, listen up, the smartest teddy bear is about to

hit the market. apparently smarter than teddy ruxpin. this is teddy the guardian. he monitors your kid. it grabs the teddy's paw, the bear measures your child's temperature, body temperature and oxygen sensor. the information is sent to an app on your smartphone. not clear when the bear will hit store shelves but it's expected to cost about 60 bucks. >> don't worry, no one can replace teddy ruxpin in their hearts. your kids will be hitting the swimming pools a lot this week, but those red eyes are not caused by chlorine but something more disgusting. according to a cdc report, chlorine binds to things like urine and sweat in the water. and this irritant is what causes our eyes to turn red and sting. what should you do about this? well the cdc says shower before swimming. take restroom breaks every hour

>> breaking news u.s. ambassador after the wikileaks said the u.s. spied on the last three presidents. ambassador james hartley is going to appear today. this is according to the french official. this after the country's president calls an emergency meeting, and went on to say that these revelations are an unacceptable breach of security. this is a story that will continue to stay on top of. aaron. >> angie thank you. all eyes on boston today where dzhokhar tsarnaev will be sentenced to dearth. today, tsarnaev could finally break his stylence, too. he will have a chance to speak before that sentence is handed down the jury convicted tsarnaev on all counts against him for the boston marathon bombing in 2013. he remained completely silent in court so far. >> maryland's attorney marilyn moseley said she does not know who leaked freddie gray's

autopsy report. it found that gray died a high energy injury while riding in a police van. a high energy something similar to when someone dives into shallow water. since the officers did not follow safety procedure, the death was ruled a homicide. all of the six officers charged have pled not guilty. firefighters in california now dealing with some major wildfires. in northern california they closed several highways and put a town on standby for one of the fires growing. firefighters say it's now 25 miles wide. hundreds of firefighters are on the ground right now tackling these flames. two other wildfires in the state have also caused evacuation and burned a few homes. exxon forced to stop operations at three offshore platforms near california because of the oil spill along the santa barbara coast there. the broken pipeline spilled over

to 100,000 gallons of crude oil there. santa barbara rejected an emergency application to truck oil to refineries. the shutdown is not expected to have an impact on oil prices. we first showed you a disturbing image yesterday. a casket washed away from its burial ground. saturday's storms only destroyed one burial plot and they're working to contact the families. a pile of headstones is actually there on purpose. >> those tombstones were purposely put there discarded there is what happened. >> so it was an area that was close -- discarded pieces that needed to be replaced. >> prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins revisited that cemetery yesterday and does report that a retaining wall near some of the graves appeared

to need some repairs. the cemetery did not comment on the state of that retaining wall. housing prices in prince george's county are apparently soaring. prices have risen just over 60% after hitting rock bomb four years ago. the median price of house or condo that sold in the county last month was $243,000. that's up 12% from the same time last year. happening today -- president obama is expected to announce shift in practice when it comes to americans being held hostage overseas. and we're already getting a preview of what could change. looking live at temperatures this morning for the radar. >> nothing coming out of the sky at this early hour. less humidity, cooler air, too. chuck is working on your forecast as well as when rain could return. and the jellyfish showing up on shore that could be deadly. >> and

>> thanks melissa. 5:33 is your time now. developing in new york. police think they're close to cornering two convicted killers over two weeks ago. the search is now focused near a hunting camp about 20 miles from the prison. detectives found dna from both richard matt and david sweat on objects in a cabin that had been drone into near the town of owls head including underwear. prosecutors say a prison seamstress helped the two escape by smuggling tools inside the prison inside of ground beef. today the white house is expected to announce a change its in policy on hostages on terrorist groups by isis. the obama administration spent months hearing concerns from families of hostages like kayla mueller, james foley. >> improved the process of

the victims, savvas savopoulos. and sources say immigration leaders were not notified at the time. cnn reports wint was in danger of losing his green card because of prior arrests. he could have faced deportation before the murders. 5:35. now, another republican declaring his presidential bid today. louisiana governor bobby jindzal expected to announce he wanted the job. he'll make a speech in louisiana this afternoon. right now, jindal is holding in last place among the candidates for republican president. a watchdog report will release a federal lawsuit for what it's gauling gerrymandering in maryland. the group is proposal a method to allow courts to prevent any party from drawing new congressional maps that arbitrarily divide communities. save our train station. that is the message from some people in the city of laurel.

>> announcer: you're watching "news4 today." welcome back at 5:46. more now on last night's big storms in green belt. nearly two dozen people are wondering whether they can go back to their apartment. news4 is at the university apartments molette, what's happening now? >> reporter: good morning it's a pretty devastating scene behind me. these are items of someone's home. kitchen items, mattress, chairs. all from the 22 apartment units impacted by the terrible of storm and fire that developed here last night. take a look at the damage to the roof. you can see the boarded up windows and the damage there to the roof that forced people out of their units. unclear this morning when they can get back in. the flames just were coming out of that roof last night at the

height of this. this scene was devastating. and it forced firefighters to bring out more equipment and more firefighters, as this went to two alarms. luckily, nobody was injured. but as of this morning, it is unsafe for folks to get back in and to be able to salvage whatever remains of their lives inside this building. we're live this morning in green belt back to you. >> thanks, molette. today, we're watching for new details about how millions of federal workers' personal data was left vulnerable to hackers. the director of the office of personnel management kathryn archuleta will testify again this week. opm's independent watchdog is expected to challenge that today. and two dozen police officers who protect the district's va medical center are suing hospital management. they say cameras and microphones were hidden all over the

hospital including in changing rooms. officers claim the recordings from that was just at least once in a discipline case. the use of secret recording devices must have guidance and approval from the justice department. just days into summer and eight children have died from heatstroke after being left in cars across the country. one of those deaths happened in baltimore. now the federal government aaa and a mother are pleading with parents to be more vigilant. lynn belfour was acquitted of murder after her child was left in the car. she thought her son was with the babysitter. now, she's trying to make sure no other parent makes that same mistake. >> because people do not believe it could ever happen to them. like me i was a parent that said there's no way that could ever happen to me. >> experts suggest a trick, make sure that you check the
