from other churches. new details this morning, montgomery county police are investigating the death of a 60-year-old man montgomery village man as a murder. someone beat bradley colmes so badly that he died. this beating happened on june 12th. montgomery county police believe three people saw the attack and they're asking the witnesses to call them. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information in this case. the son of the late marion barry is headed to jail. that's according to "the washington post." christopher barry is facing 15 days for violating his probation. police caught him driving on a revoked license last year. barry is supposed to report to jail on july 3. he will serve his time on weekends. 4:34. today we're standing by for more supreme court rulings. a ruling on same-sex marriage may be handed down today. millions of couples would be affected by that decision. in all 50 states. the court will decide if gays

you're watching "news4 today." >> welcome back at 4:44. we are keeping a close eye on the supreme court today. we could see a ruling on same-sex marriage. millions of couples will be affected by this decision. and nbc's tracie potts is with us now this morning to talk about what could happen today. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. this is a big one and it could come as soon as today. two key questions before the court -- is same-sex marriage a fundamental right? meaning should it and must it be offered to couples in every state? not the patch work that we are seeing across the country right now. the other question is if not, must states that do not marry same-sex couples recognize marriages that are performed legally in other states? so we're waiting that decision. president obama made comments about it just this week saying that this is about civil rights.

equal rights and protection under the law. supporters say this patch work of laws we are seeing around the country is fundamentally flawed. we are waiting on that decision and four others possibly today and possibly as late as monday. >> tracie potts, thanks. the search for the person behind serial murders in connecticut in 2003 is leading investigators to virginia now. and detectives search the home of william devin howell in hampton yesterday. he's in prison but he lived in hampton in 2003. police and a team of fbi search dogs looked for evidence in and around that home. >> currently we have begun a grid search of the ground where we're starting the tedious process of starting to dig through several different areas in the ground. >> now, howell is a key suspect in the killing of seven peoples in new briton, connecticut seven years ago. he is only charged in one of the case snoos we're working to learn the name of the man murdered and set on fire in the

district. the medical examiner says the victim was shot several times before being set on fire inside of a trash can. on tuesday, firefighters discovered the body inside of a burning trash can in the trinidad neighborhood. d.c. police are having a tough time identifying the man because the body was so badly burned. the district has seen a spike in murders with 64 committed so far this year. that is a 20% increase over this time last year. a developing story now. the search for the convicted killers who escaped in upstate new york is intensifying. richard matt and david sweat have been on the run for three weeks now. >> meanwhile we are learning more about the prison guard who was arrested. gene palmer is charged with passing frozen hamburger meat to matt. a prison seamstress already admitted that she smuggled hacksaw blades and other tools inside that meat. >> now, palmer told police that matt gave him the paintings and information about other inmates in exchange for favors over the past two years.

that included letting sweat access the catwalk behind the block to alter the wiring so he could cook in his cell. palmer's lawyer says his client had no knowledge about the escape plans. the boston marathon bomber now kales the infamous -- calls the infamous super max prison in colorado home. dzhokhar tsarnaev will be there while his execution is scheduled. that could take years because of the appeals process. super max is home to one of the 9/11 conspirators and unabomber ted kaczynski. tsarnaev will be moved to death row in indiana. new research shows that girls run a higher risk of injuries in sports. the highest rate of overuse injuries were in girls, track field, hockey and lacrosse. more than 3,000 boys and girls took part in the study. for boys it's swimming and diving that causes the most injuries. doctors say teen athletes should vary the sports to avoid

injuries. the seventh annual hiv testing days place today. it starts at 10:00 at the max robinson center in southeast washington. it's part of a national testing day campaign. the official national testing day is tomorrow. free confidential testing is available today along with information to help you stay healthy. maryland governor larry hogan is giving the green light to the purple line. it will connect montgomery and prince george's county. he made the announcement as part of the $2 billion infrastructure improvement project. it will make route 1 safer for pedestrians between college avenue and university boulevard. there will be a brand new interchange on the beltway at the greenbelt metro station. that new interchange is an effort to lure the fbi to prince george's county. >> if it gets the fbi here, do it. >> sounds like a good idea if they can make the numbers work. it sounds like it would be good. all the way and. >> now the governor also allocated $200 million for that

>> today is the last day attorneys for the six baltimore police officers charged in freddie gray's death can hand over evidence. attorneys must hand over all evidence to the state's attorney's office today. last week, baltimore's state attorney marilyn mosby asked the judge to keep them from publicly sharing information. they said they're selectively releasing information that could jeopardize the trial. the judge rejected that request. when and how is the best time to teach your children about gender identity and sexual orientation? that was the debate going on in fairfax county last night. the school board voted in favor of adding gender identity and sexual orientation to the family life education curriculum for seventh through tenth graders. some parents don't like the -- don't think the classroom is the place for those lessons. they now have the option to opt out of them. >> we actually think the right decision was made.

parents deserve to have the right to opt their children out. we want to make sure that students who want to be educated and need to be educated on these things are in the right position. >> some members of the lgbt community are pleased that parents have a chance to opt out. education is key to preventing bullying, some say. scores from the misprinted s.a.t.s are up on line. the college board says that throughout sections of the scoring, it will still allow your students to retake them for free. it said they had 25 minutes to complete one section, however the proctor's book said they had 20 minutes. the scores are still valid and reliable even without that section. a new bill is calling for d.c. to become the 51st state. senator tom carper of delaware introduced the bill yesterday. it would shrink washington d.c. to include the white house, the capitol and the national mall and the rest of the district would become state of new

a car hit a tree. you can see the rear axle of the car came off. we learned that police are investigating whether speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash. coming up melissa mollet will have the latest on closures in the area. >> thanks. let's check in with amelia segal for a check on the forecast. >> happy friday. here's the latest check of storm team 4 radar. clear in our area and we are looking at mainly dry day. just the chance of an afternoon or evening shower. not the case tomorrow. rain moves in during the morning hours. it will be heavy at times throughout the day. on into the evening hours coming to an end around midnight. and there is the concern for flash flooding across the area. just about everybody under a flash flood watch except for extreme parts of southern maryland and around the northern neck. this is running until 2:00 a.m. on sunday. one to two inches of rain is likely. some spots could see up to three inches of rain. right now, we're at 70 degrees. mostly cloudy skies in place and
