center in oxon hill. the shooting was the result of an argument between the victim and a friend of the shooter. no one has been arrested. a woman is recovering this morning after being hit by a car in northwest washington. d.c. police tell us after 6:00 p.m. someone hit a woman walking on wisconsin avenue near wyndham street northwest. she's the third pedestrian hit on wisconsin avenue in the past three weeks. two people died after being hit. a pedestrian safety group wants changes along the road to make it safer for people crossing the street. 5:01 is your time right now. he began preaching at 13. he was ordained at 18. and today a funeral will be held for 42-year-old clementa pinckney. he was a south carolina state senator and the senior pastor at the church where nine worshipers were gunned down. thousands have paid their respects. as you may know, the president

and the first lady, hillary clinton and the bidens will be at the funeral today. president obama spent last night working on the eulogy and in a few minutes we'll go live to south carolina for a look at how the community there is planning to say good-bye. here in our area, you can join mourners at a vigil hosted by the stafford county naacp. it's outside the united states christian ministry. it is open to the public and to pastors and worshipers from other churches. it's 5:02. new this morning we're hoping to learn what the case against a d.c. teacher accused of child sex abuse has or will be taken to the grand jury. giovanni pena heads back to court today. he waived his right to the preliminary hearing. police say he inappropriately touched an 11-year-old boy in the 2013-14 school year. he taught at oyster-adams bilingual school in washington. a man accused of trying to hire someone to murder his ex-wife is heading back to court. prosecutors say dallas brumback, jr., offered someone

$5,000 for the murder. he and his ex had a bitter custody battle after the 2006 divorce. brumback has ties to the whites only christian organization. police seized guns, a cross bow and kkk items from his home. montgomery county police investigating the death of a 60-year-old village man as a murder. someone beat bradley colmes so badly he died and that beating happened on july 12. three people saw the attack. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information in this case. the son of the late marion barry is heading to jail according to "the washington post." christian barry is facing 15 did days for violating probation. barry is supposed to report to jail on july 3rd. today we are keeping a close eye on the supreme court ruling on same-sex marriage.

well this is not a good story to hear right before you jump in the car and try to work. a new report from the census bureau says d.c. is the third worst city for traffic in regards to travel time. d.c. took the third spot behind san francisco. new york is number one. well, you have no doubt seen this video. a hammerhead shark came right up on the beach in ocean city yesterday. that's a little too close to home. the beach patrol says it's more worried about her safety than yours to e. -- though. it's likely that the shark is sick or hurt. hammerheads are harmless to humans and the sharks can grow to more than 1,000 pounds. any time a shark swims on shore it will draw attention. the beach patrol says it will clear the water of swimmers if the shark returns. that's important to know. the hammerhead shark versus a different kind of shark.

this morning after a bomb threat. air canada flight was grounded and air traffic was diverted while police cleared the plane. no one was hurt. a mother and child have been found after surviving a plane crash in a remote area of colombia. they were airlifted t hospital in medellin. a heavy load of fish in the cabin cushioned the crash impact. the pilot was killed. a maryland man is in jail this morning, accused of stealing thousands of atm cards and pin numbers. raphael cordero used an atm skimmer. one skimmer was discovered in a bank. he stole more than $300,000 in the scheme. officers caught up with him in florida. he was trying to board a flight to bogota, colombia. look at this, i want to show you incredible pictures here. a family in washington state came home from a baseball game

that do not recognize same-sex marriage, should they be forced to in terms of equal protection under the law. right now we have a patch work across the country. and the other question for state that don't do they have to recognize marriages that happen legally in other states? the president spoke out on this at an lgbt pride reception on wednesday saying this is about civil rights and equal protection. supporters say laws are fundamentally flawed that prevent same-sex marriage and they want the court to address this. again, five cases that are outstanding. we could see decisions starting today. >> all right, tracie potts live on capitol hill for us, thanks, tracie. 5:32 now. today is the last day for attorneys for the police officers charged in freddie gray's death to hand over evidence. last week the state attorney marilyn mosby asked the judge to

keep the attorneys from publicly sharing information. she says they are selectively releasing information that could jeopardize the trial. the judge rejected that request. we're working to learn the name of the man murdered and set on fire in the district. the medical examiner says the victim was shot several times before being set on fire inside a trash can. on tuesday, firefighters discovered the body inside a burning trash can in the trinidad neighborhood. d.c. police say they're having a a tough time identifying the man because his body was badly burned. there's 64 murders committed so far this year, that's a 20% increase over this time last year. new this morning, frederick, maryland, police arrested this man and charged him with indecent exposurement of police say that jose arnaz flashed a woman on northeast street yesterday. she called police and an officer found him in the nearby store. he is awaiting a court appearance. d.c. police arrested a man

accused of sexually assaulting two women. 19-year-old hussein smart forced the woman behind the building near the intersection of rhode island avenue and attacked them. smart was arrested later in the day and charged with sex abuse, kidnapping and robbery. maryland governor larry hogan is giving the green light to the purple line. the light rail system will connect montgomery and prince george's counties. hogan made the announcement as part of a $2 billion project. that project also includes congestion relief on i-270. that will make route 1 in college park safer for pedestrians between college avenue and university boulevard. there will be a brand-new interchange at the greenbelt metro station. the new interchange is an effort to lure the fbi to prince george's county. >> if it gets the fbi here, do it. >> sounds like a good idea if they can make the numbers work. it sound like it would be goodall the way around. >> the governor allocated

$200 million to the interchange project around the greenbelt station. the improvements would be complete by 2020. good news, bad news about the 16th bridge project. the entire bridge will be shut down for 24 hours tonight as crews work to finish repairs. the good news -- that project is ahead of schedule and they expect to reopen the bridge completely by july 1. drivers have dealt with lane closures since last fall. and the 16th street bridge is one of 12 in d.c. considered structurally deficient. wtop obtained the report which says the number is the lowest it's been in years. nine of the bridges are under ddot's control. they include the sousa bridge, 295 bridge over suitland parkway. and the national park service controls the other three bridges including the arlington memorial bridge. ddot says they have budgeted $36 million to make repairs to

most of those bridges. it's what a lot of students have been waiting for especially those whose s.a.t.s had a major misprint. when and where they can find their scores. a man jumped into a car with kids inside and took off. how two little girls managed to escape. looking live outside on this friday morning, dry right now, but that could change. 66 degrees outside. amelia segal is looking at when the rain is expected to hit us.

a 10-year-old girl and 2-year-old sister escaped a carjacking by jumping out of the car as it was moving. the girls were left inside the car with the engine running as the mother went into the 7/eleven gas station to pay. a man jumped in and then the girls jumped from the passenger side door. this happened near san bernardino california. the police know who he is and they're hoping he will turn himself in. a new court ruling will make it harder to learn about police misconduct in maryland.

trial of charles severance. prosecutors say the writing pros ride is a motive for -- provide a motive. but the defense attorneys argue the writings are not specific and they could turn the jury against severance. one of his friends agrees. >> i think that they looked through his writings and extracted what they wanted to be sensational about it. >> prosecutors say severance did write about getting back at the elite. all three of the murders happened in upscale neighborhoods. a developing story now. the search for the convicted killers who escaped an upstate new york prison is intensifying. richard matt and david sweat have been on the run for three weeks. >> meanwhile, we are learning more about the prison guard who was arrested. gene palmer is charged with passing frozen hamburger meat to matt. a prison seamstress admitted she smuggled hacksaw blades and other tools inside that meat.

news4's megan mcgrath live on the national mall with what we need to know. >> reporter: hey, good morning. every year the consumer safety product commission puts out a warning and they do a graphic demonstration about the dangers of at-home fireworks. later on this morning they'll be doing that with jeff rossen from the "today" man. they'll blow up watermelons to demonstrate the dangers of the fire works. 200 people are injured every day in the month of july and despite the fact that fire works are illegal in most places. now, the laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. so there's often a lot of confusion about what the rules are. take a look here at our laws in our area. d.c., anything that explodes is illegal. suburban, maryland, so prince george's county and montgomery county, all fire works are illegal including sparklers. in alexandria, all fireworks are

illegal. that includes sparklers as well. fairfax nothing that explodes can be set off. they're putting the warning out there. people do get injured despite the fact they're not supposed to be lighting off fireworks and of course we have a lot of professional displays around town. so there is that option and they're encouraging people to take it. back to you in the studio. >> thanks, megan. 5:51 is our time right now. i want to turn to meteorologist amelia segal this morning. we're waking up to a pretty decent morning. going to about rough weekend though. >> yeah, especially tomorrow. so you need to be weather ready tomorrow. we are looking at rain to move in during the morning hours. especially later in the day and there will be flash flooding later on tomorrow. today, kind of the calm before the storm. a quiet weather day. and just a chance of a late day shower. now, the weather impacts for today, relatively low. no major issues for travel. mostly cloudy skies. outdoor exercise today.

it will be pretty nice not too humid. plenty of clouds in place, not too hot. only around 80s, low 80s. that late day shower is possible, so keep the small umbrella handy if you have dinner plans for later on tonight. temperatures coming in in the 60s for the most part. washington being the exception at 70 degrees. but leesburg at 64. camp spring, 66. gaithersburg, 63. nice for the early morning run. just some patchy fog until about 7:00, 8:00. north and west of town. by 11:00 a.m. we are in the upper 70s, maybe an isolated shower again for the afternoon and evening hours.reatest weather risk by far is going to be heavy rain. now, if the rain holds off until the midday afternoon hours there's a better chance that we'll be dealing with severe thunderstorms. greatest concern would be high winds producing some wind damage followed by hail and we can't

s.a.t.s your students took are now up on line. it threw out sections of the test when it came to scoring but it will let your student retake the s.a.t.s for free. earlier this month, students discovered manuals said they had 25 minutes to complete one section. however, the proctor's book said the students only had 20 minutes. five minutes fewer. the coll scores are valid and reliable even without scoring that section of the test. we are monitoring two recalls for you this morning. one affecting tens of thousands of drivers. the other in your closet maybe. cnbc's landon dowdy has the latest on all this. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you. subaru is recalling 72,000 outback legacy and impreza vehicles from the 2015 model year because of a software glitch can cause the automatic breaking system to stop working. acura is recalling some suvs from the 2014 and 2015 model years because a bolt in the air conditioning system can become loose or break.

"news4 today" starts now. >> and a flash flood watch for most of the area goes into effect very early tomorrow morning. runs through sunday morning. i'm going to have the latest on torrential rain and the potential for severe thunderstorms. i'm kristin wright at the live desk. a possible terrorist attack in france that's coming up. and today, president obama prepares to join thousands of others to say good-bye to the pastor shot and killed while conducting bible study inside his south carolina church. right now we are following a developing story in montgomery county. speed and alcohol may have caused this crash. two people died in this crash in north potomac. montgomery county fire and rescue said before midnight, this car went off the road, through a fence and landed in someone's driveway. dufief mill is still shut down near travilah road while police investigate.

melissa mollet will be here to tell you how to get around this closure. an update now on that breaking news. french authorities are now calling this a terrorism investigation. it's unfolding now, an attack at a gas factory in the southeastern part of france. one man is dead. he was decapitated. several people there at that factory wounded. what we just learned is that men crashed a car into the entrance of the factory. they crashed into gas canisters which set off a series of explosions. we have learned this morning that banners with arabic writing were found next to that decapitated body. we are following this one closely and we'll bring you more throughout the morning. >> thank you, kristin. new this morning we are
