getting started. >> yeah same-sex marriage is now the law of the land you have probably seen all kinds of reaction in your facebook feed. >> but more celebrations about to take place tonight in the district. it is already legal but a lot of local advocates joined the celebration outside of the supreme court today when the decision was announced. we have team coverage this afternoon. david culver has reaction from around the region. we begin with steve handlesman and what it all means. steve? >> reporter: pat and chris thanks, good evening. not all the affected states are rushing today to actually begin performing same-sex marriages but six already are and the rest will soon have to after this decision here at the supreme court. [ cheering ] the crowd outside court exploded as they exchanged songs and hugs celebrating same-sex marriage rule the constitutional right and instantly legalized in the 14 states where it was still banned, like ohio.

laura woolly. tell me about that? >> i'm super excited about it. >> reporter: opponents still protest. >> a marriage is a union of one man and one woman. >> reporter: but the plaintiff from ohio said the term gay marriage can be dropped. from this day forward it will simply be marriage. >> reporter: he got a call from president obama and mr. obama came out to praise the ruling. >> when all americans are treated as equal, we are all more free. >> reporter: owe posing the 5-4 decision, chief justice roberts complained the constitution had nothing to do with it but for the majority justice anthony kennedy wrote, "same-sex couples seek not to denigrate marriage but rather live their lives or honor their spouse's memory joined by its bond." and he wrote, "bans on gay marriage harm and humiliate the children of same-sex couples." one couple rushed to get a marriage license with their kids in mind. >> we don't have to think about

analysis of the threat, we are told is based in part on the use of social media by eyes is to encourage small-and large-scale attacks worldwide. sources declined to share other details of this threat but say the information they got came in advance of today'ser to attacks in france tunisia and kuwait. pat and chris. >> thanks, scott. right now kids and parents at a local high school are in mourning. they woke up to discover two of their classmates the wooten high school were killed in a car crash in north potomac. as news4's chris gordon reports, police think they know how it happened. it was quite clear to us that speed, alcohol and a lack of seat belts by the back seat passengers were directly related or factors involved in the collision of this nature. >> reporter: the car crashed through a fence hit trees, knocking the top off this one. it went airborne landing upside down in this driveway. the neighbor whose fence was hit heard the crash.

>> all i heard was a loud explosion. i didn't hear anything before it. like any screeching tires or anything, just a very loud explosion. it rattled the house. >> reporter: police say the passengers sitting in the back seat were killed. calvin lee and alexander murk, both 18 and recent graduates of wooten high school were not wearing seat belts, according to investigators. the driver of the car, 18-year-old samuel ellis is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. police are not identifying a 17-year-old who was sitting in the front passenger seat. friends gathered at the crash site, leaving moment toes, a football, basketball and a cross with an american flag bandana red, white and blue being the school colors of the wooden patriots.

the fourth of july is right around the corps and spending is expected to go up from last year. the national retail federation says we will spend well over $6 billion just on food. when it comes to fourth of july celebrations about two-thirds of us will head to a cookout, barbecue or picnic and factor in lower gas prices and more of us will drive to the beach or go visit family compared to years past. the chance of flooding for half of the weekend and even the possibility of some severe storms. we have gotten a overcast sky out there right now and yes, there has been a few showers mainly south of i-66 where it is 81 degrees right now reagan national airport, we will fall to the mid-70s by 9:00 still looking dry by your evening, showers coming our way after night and by early tomorrow morning and the roads are just gonna start to deteriorate as we have some moderate rain in here by late morning, heavy rain by tomorrow afternoon as well as

in north carolina they are looking into reports of a shark attack off the coast of the outer banks. several people reported seeing a man being attacked near the avon fishing pier in dare county. the manager at the avon pier says red nagflags are flying alerting people about a shark attack. this comes just a day after we told you about a shark spotted

off the coast of ocean city. it didn't attack anyone. this has been more of -- one of the more -- the most popular stories on nbcwashington.com this week. that shark in ocean city was a hammerhead which is said to be relatively harmless. now to a developing story on the manhunt in upstate new york. we just learned a prison guard arrested a couple days ago won't be back in court until monday. gene palmer's original lawyer said he could no longer represent him because the case is just too high profile much the attorney said his small-town office can't handle all the media attention. >> this are people parked outside of my house. there's people going to the office. we are just not equipped to deal with that. i'm a small attorney. >> palmer's lawyer says he did give richard matt and david sweat ground beef but didn't know tool also been smuggled inside that meat. palmer also allowed them to have access to the catwalk behind their cells and they used that catwalk to escape. palmer told investigators he helped the inmates in exchange

rain. baltimore already the wettest june ever, d.c. now in the top five. one of the wettest out toward dulles as well. the unfortunate thing we are going to get a lot more rain. but what have we seen over the past couple of moments, a special coming up during the day tomorrow and this is one of the pieces you will be able to see tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. as hot as it has been lately, it is hard to think that just over three months ago, we were in the freezer. the start of march was cold. we saw highs in the 30s the first few days and saw nearly five inches of snow at reagan national in the fifth, with nearly ten inches falling at dulles. the low at dulles just two days later was only two degrees a new record low. but then fast forward just one month and the warm air started moving in quickly. we hit our first 80-degree day on the 13th of april. that month would end up well above average. but that was nothing compared to what we would see in the month

of may. this past may was the warmest may ever in d.c. we had seven days at or above 90 degrees with the warmest being 92. the heat topped right into the month of june with a six-day heat wave from june 11th through the 16th. during that stretch the heat index was over 100 at times, making feel quite oppressive outside. that's one of the pieces that we will have during the day to be sure to watch storm team4, tracking summer, tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. here on nbc4. that, of course, is after news4 today. one thing that we are tracking this summer is going to be the amount of rainfall we get. june has been incredibly wet. i don't think we will see that july and august but you can check the rest of that out during the day tomorrow with the rest of the summer outlook coming up. 81 degrees right now, temperatures way down today as a result of the cloud cover. dew point still in the 6 0s. 78 martinsburg, 78, culpepper, 77, easton and cambridge. not talking about 90,
