island, a child died. three others are in the hospital recovering after this racing boat crashed into a spectator boat. the accident happened at the thunder on the narrows race yesterday. a 7-year-old died in the crash. maryland natural resources police say the boat's driver lost control but it's not clear why. the time right now is 4:30. it's really refreshing outside. >> if you have a reason to be out this morning, get out and enjoy it though. a nice break from what we have been dealing with last week. >> badly needed, right, tom? >> indeed. good morning to walk the door, get some exercise. lower humidity has moved in. if you slept with the windows open, it was rather chilly waking up this morning. in the 50s in montgomery county, fairfax, much of northern virginia. mid and upper 50s. closer to washington right around the beltway inside the beltway in the low to mid 60s. as is much of southern maryland. shenandoah valley the mountains in the 50s this morning. live view from the storm team 4

back at 4:41 with weather and traffic on the 1s. breaking news into the live desk. an escaped inmate captured. not to be confused with the prison break in new york. they think kristopher mcneil simply walked out of the brown creek correctional facility in north carolina, scaled a fence. saturday he was in for second degree murder and mcneil got about 80 miles before people recognized him and he was put back in jail about three hours ago. a prison kitchen employee is charged with trying to help him escape. aaron? >> all right, kristin thank you. and kristin referenced this developing story in upstate new york. people living in the town near clinton correctional facility are waking up for the first time in three weeks not in fear. [ cheers and applause ] cheers for that small town, escapee david sweat is in critical condition this morning after being shot by a state trooper yesterday, just two miles from the canadian border. the fugitive was unarmed when the new york state police

driveway. montgomery county investigators say speed and alcohol contributed to that crash. counselors will be available from 9:00 this morning to 3:00 this afternoon for the students. right now, aviation investigators are on the ground in alaska trying to figure out why a sightseeing plane slammed into the granite cliff thursday. eight cruise ship passengers and the plane's pilot were killed. a father and daughter from montgomery county are among the victims. the plane went down near the national monument in southern alaska. that's steep mountainous terrain that sees frequent high winds. today the last round of decisions due out of the supreme court as it wraps up this term. we are still waiting on decisions about lethal injection drugs, about how congressional districts are shaped and how far the government can go to limit mercury emissions and whether they will hear high profile

right now a big fire that won't stop burning out west. we want you to take a look at the pictures. this is a grass fire in central washington state. it keeps getting bigger and growing quickly. having real impacts on anyone who lives near it. about 200 people are told they have to leave their homes or should leave their homes. even a walmart was evacuated. a handful of buildings damaged or destroyed about nine or so.

and emergency shelter has opened for those who decided to evacuate and investigators are trying to figure out what sparked this fire out there. angie? >> thank you, kristin. two weeks from now, governor walker will tell us if he's running for president. he told fox news channel he'll announce the week of july 13th. he's running a few points behind jeb bush and marco rubio in the latest nbc poll. and another candidate is set to announce a bid. ohio governor john kasich is expected to join the race july 21st. he is reportedly planning to head immediately to new hampshire, south carolina and michigan. and chris christie is expected to announce on tuesday. the total number of republican candidates will be a staggering 16. coming up on 15 before the hour and coast to coast, lgbt pride events took on new meaning

after the supreme court legalized same-sex marriage. the issue is far from settled, and tracie potts is following the story from capitol hill now. good morning. >> reporter: hey, aaron, good morning. we saw the demonstrations from new york to san francisco, celebrated what we thought was a clear decision from the courts. that same-sex marriage is now legal in all 50 states. however, we are seeing different reactions from at what of those states and louisiana and ohio they say they'll comply, but reluctantly. they don't like the decision. but they have no choice. in new york, we saw the first same-sex marriage performed by governor cuomo before the court even sent the paperwork out. but in texas, we're seeing the attorney general saying that he's got an army of lawyers ready to defend county clerks and judges that have religious objections that's the next legal front here. religious objections by public officials who do not want to participate in same-sex marriages. so it is certainly possible that we may see that part of this

work its way back up to the courts. some of the 14 states that had banned same-sex marriage now find other ways to object to the court's historic ruling last week. >> tracie potts, thank you. as you can imagine the ruling is expected to be a huge boon for the wedding industry. a new survey of more than 1,200 couples and single found they spent less -- or plan to spend less on their wedding than other couples. the average cost of a wedding for any couple is more than $31,000. vice president joe biden sharing his personal connection with the church in charleston where nine people were killed during a bible study. he spoke at sunday services at the emanuel ame church. he said he visited the church before and he knew pastor clementa pinckney. his appearance was a surprise to worshipers. the leader of one of the most loved landmarks is now calling for the removal of a

confederate themed decoration there. there are two stained glass panels that have images of the flags. it was put in to honor military leaders anned yesterday the deep of the church spoke to worshipers about the flag during his sunday sermon. he said it's become a symbol of white supremacy. >> the fact that so many find it so offensive should be enough of a reason to fold it up and put it away. >> the cathedral's governing body has a final call on whether to remove the panels. maryland governor larry hogan said he's feeling strong and healthy after his first round of chemotherapy. he said he feels humbled and uplifted by the outpouring of support. there was a prayer vigil for the governor last night in annapolis. in addition to the supporters he thanked the medical team saying, quote, we are killing cancer cells left and right and i have no side effects.

into the 60s much of the region. then by noon upper 70s. beautiful afternoon, great weather for outdoor work and recreation. and then tomorrow, we'll be back up near the average high of 88 and on wednesday as well. thursday, friday, saturday, a little bit below the average high. back up near that first part of next week. so a nice break from our high heat and high humidity. as we get up into the upper 80s tomorrow, an afternoon thunderstorm. there's a possibility a slight chance it would be severe tomorrow. then a much smaller chance of an afternoon storm on wednesday. mid 80s, a possibility of a passing shower or thunderstorm during the day on thursday. then on friday, looking as we get into the fourth of july weekend a chance of afternoon storms as well as on saturday saturday evening could have some thundershowers interrupting some of the fireworks displays. mid 80s on the fourth and then partly cloudy and looking rather

in their home. >> anything with electric in water is never good. never work with a sump pump that's blocked in. there's all kinds of electricity rolling through this thing. if it's plugged in and you put your hand in, you can shock yourself. >> firefighters are working to finding out if a sump pump caused the shock. some of you are still cleaning up from a tornado. we learned that two touched down during saturday's storms. they ripped up more than 50 trees and damaged houses and barns too. culpepper's police department wants your extra prescription drugs. the idea is to keep leftover pain pills out of the wrong hands. there's a drop-off box on old brandy road. it's available to the public, no questions asked from 8:00 in the morning until 5:00 p.m. monday through friday. the police department will dispose of the drugs in an environmentally friendly manner.

today, mayor muriel bowser celebrates the start of the summer jobs program for young people in d.c. she's holding a round table at enlightened incorporated later on this morning and is honoring some of the community members. she is speaking tonight at the caribbean recognition awards. in less than three hours, the police and fire kicks off their games. thousands of police officers firefighters, from all over the globe are here for the games over the next couple of weeks. everything happens -- this event happens every two years. all of the events are free and open to the public. the competition runs through july 5th and of course nbc4 is a proud sponsor of the games. >> you helped out with the opening ceremony. >> opening ceremony on friday. it was so cool to see, you know, be right on the field as the parade of nations is coming by. 10,000 in town.
