[ cheers and applause ] cheers for law enforcement officers there after escapee david sweat is now in critical condition after being shot yesterday. just two miles from the canadian border. the fugitive was unarmed when a state police sergeant shot him as he ran to a tree line. his capture comes two days after his fellow escapee richard matt died after being shot by police. >> these were really dangerous, dangerous men, both matt and sweat. they were killers. >> they have put their lives at risk for us and can't thank them enough. >> now, sweat is being tweeted under heavy police guard. they were on the run for three weeks after a movie style prison

break. two have been arrested for aiding the prisoners. right now an escaped convict is back behind bars in north carolina. kristopher mcneil was picked up around 1:00 this walking along a road about 80 miles away from the brown creek correctional institution. police say he scaled the fence there on saturday and took off. mcneil is serving time for second degree murder. police arrested a prison kitchen worker for helping him plan that escape and housing him while he was on the run. a man will stand trial for ordering his uncle's murder. prosecutors say brian mayhew had someone kill his uncle nico to keep him from testifying against him in a murder trial. mayhew was sentenced to life in prison for killing a man in the district in 2011. stanley winston and anthony cannon are facing charges in the mayhew death. that should last for two weeks. also today a teacher will stand trial again on sex assault

charges. brown taught at high point and he sexually assaulted a student inside the school during school hours in 2013. brown admitted the involvement but said the relationship with the 17-year-old student was consensual. the jury couldn't reach a decision in the first trial back in march. right now d.c. police are looking for two women who they say shot a d.c. taxi driver. this happened on east capitol street at 17th street northeast yesterday. police say one of those women shot the driver after an argument. another taxi driver told us he wants more safety measures in place. >> so you used to have a panic button. you could press it if you were in trouble. >> yeah. yeah. automatically could be pressed. it's always our life is in our hands you know? >> we're working to find out if the injured driver -- or that driver's condition right now. police say he's alive. also in northeast washington detectives are looking for a suspect in a homicide. they say someone shot and killed

a man on 16th street northeast near "e" street yesterday. miss have not told us the man's -- police have not toll us the man's name. and students can get help from grief counselors. friday morning, two wootton recent graduates died. calvin li and alex murk both died after the car they were in went off the road, flipped and landed in someone's driveway. two other students were also hurt. montgomery county investigators say speed and alcohol contributed to the crash. counselors will be available from 9:00 this morning until 3:00 this afternoon for the students. right now aviation investigators are on the ground in alaska, trying to find out why a sightseeing plane slammed into the granite cliff on thursday. eight cruise ship passengers and a pilot were killed. a father and daughter from montgomery county were one of the victims. it went down in southern alaska. this is a region with mountainous terrain that sees

frequent high winds. this morning we expect to hear more from the montgomery county's council about larry hogan's purple line. leventhal says it will create substantial challenges. it would connect montgomery and prince george's counties. hogan approved it last week, but he wants the counties to spend more to help the state pay for it. right now the search is on for a silver spring man, missing off the shores of terrapin beach park. how he and several others manage to go overboard. amazing video coming in this morning of a shark being reeled in off the coast of north carolina. this is hours after another attack. how they managed to capture the seven foot beast straight ahead. absolutely beautiful start to the day as you look outside now. but will your drive home be as nice as your drive to work? tom has your drive time forecast in your next weather and traffic on the 1s. 5:06.

seven foot shark here. just got too close to the shore. and three fishermen managed to hook it and pulled it in here and on to the shore. >> yeah. the woman who recorded this video told nbc news there were about 20 kids on the beach when the this happened. this happened hours after a shark attack by the way along the coast. in the past two weeks, seven people have been attacked by sharks on the carolina coast. they say the majority of shark attacks are because people provoke them, whether they're spear fishing or trying to catch a shark. maybe something like this. >> they did put this one back in the water. i think it was okay. >> i hope it's okay. i wouldn't be getting that close to it. but in regards to all the shark attacks you have been hearing about oftentimes they confuse people with their prey due to poor visibility. weather and traffic on the 1s now at 10 after the hour. let's go to tom. >> delightful morning.

you're watching "news4 today.." >> 15 after 5:00 now. if you live in montgomery county your kids count protected by a brand new abuse policy. the school board is voting on that today. news4's molette green is outside the middle school in silver spring, one place affected by student abuse. good morning. >> reporter: aaron good morning. the school is ready to move on the new policy, they say it's a giant step forward in preventing and reporting and recognizing sexual abuse cases. just a few months ago, police arrested and charged a former paraeducator who once worked at this school, with sex abuse involving a 15-year-old girl. there are other cases that have put parents on edge and caused anger because it took weeks for them to be told about these

cases. and today, county school leaders are ready. they say the new policy puts emphasis on getting child protective services involved asap. it holds the school employees to very high standards, creates a code of conduct. adds more training and back ground checks, but there are critics. those who have been working on a new policy who say it's not comprehensive enough and they're worried that leaders are rushing to get this new policy in place in time for the new school year without tightening all of the loopholes here. you should know the last time this policy got an update was 1986. we're live this morning in silver spring, i'm molette green. back to you. >> molette thank you. right now d.c. police are trying to solve a sex assault. a man broke into a woman's home off of cleveland avenue. the man then sexually assaulted

the woman inside. this happened early on saturday morning. police say the man is in his early 20s, brown hair, a buzz cut and a dark colored backpack. a man from silver spring is missing after his boat capsized on the maryland eastern shore. it happened at terrapin beach park yesterday. four of his family members were rescued after being stranded in the water. the man was not wearing a life jacket and he didn't know how to swim. at a crash at kent island, three children died after a racing boat crashed into the spectator boat. that accident happened at the thunder on the narrows race yesterday. a 7-year-old died in the crash. maryland natural resources police say the boat's driver lost control. it's not clear though why. 5:17 your time. if you ride on vre it is about to get more expensive. starting july 1, fares are going up 4%. to give you an idea of what you on the manassas line to crystal city will cost you $8.45.

on wednesday, it will cost you $8.80. the average is going up about 35 cents per trip. "news4 your health," you may want to ask your pediatrician to pay closer attention to your child's teeth. most children don't visit the dentist until 3 or 4, but those who received preventative treatment from their pediatrician have fewer missing baby teeth and cavities. including oral care is an important step in improving kids' dental health. as the temperatures rise this summer, so does the risk of heat stroke in children. on an 80 degree day the temperature inside the car can rise 20 degrees in as little as ten minutes. according to safe kids. an average of 37 children die every year after being left in the hot car. that's because the child's body heats up three to five times faster than an adult.

that gorgeous midnight blue sky through the tangerine glow on the horizon. then by 8:00 it will jump into the mid to upper 60s and then upper 70s. peaking at mid 80s in the afternoon. you will need plenty of the sunscreen lots of sunshine, a dry sky. that's when you can get a quick burn. then overnight that humidity increases. we'll be in the mid to upper 60s and on tuesday, afternoon highs around 90 degrees. that's near the average high this time of the year. could get some isolated storms tomorrow afternoon. a slight risk that some of the storms could produce isolated damaging winds. that's tomorrow afternoon, early evening. and otherwise, hazy and rather humid around 90. cooler and with clouds around on thursday. highs reaching the mid 80s and a morning shower or afternoon thundershower on friday.

nutley street. everything is rolling quite well here. taking a look at 270, a little slow out of frederick through the clarksburg area. southbound there and clearly clear. remember to listen to our friends on wtop this morning when you hop in your car and then 95 northbound at the icc had that left lane blocked. back in ten. right now, a big fire that just won't stop burning out west. it's a grass fire. it's in central washington state. here you can see why people out there are so worried about this. the fire is growing very fast. 200 people so far evacuated from their homes. they have had to go to emergency shelters. a walmart even evacuated. nine buildings damaged or destroyed. many more than that in danger show and so now the question for investigators what sparked this fire. aaron? >> kristin wright at the live

desk, thank you. tonight, president obama will welcome brazilian president to the white house. the two are expected to focus on climate change. world leaders are supposed to sign a climate treaty in december. the two nations have to patch up relations a bit. in 2013, rousseff cancelled a state visit over allegations that the white house had spied on her. the ntsb is headed to massachusetts where a plane crashed in a house. two adults and a child on that plane died. take a look. you can see the crash set fire to that home which was already pretty much destroyed on impact yesterday. four people in the house made it out alive. right now, police in tunisia are searching nationwide for more suspects after a gunman shot and killed at least 38 tourists on a beach. chilling new pictures show the man carrying an assault rifle walking along the water's edge. police say the gunman acted alone during the attack, but had accomplices who supported him

before hand. the interior ministry says the gunman's father and three roommates have been detained and are being questioned. iran's foreign minister is heading back home, pushing back nuclear negotiations even more. secretary of state john kerry and other leaders are talking about removing iran's ability to build nuclear weapons. the u.s. would lift several sanctions, however, iran is balking because the u.s. is asking for oversight monitoring as well. the countries wanted to hammer out an agreement by tomorrow. greece's five-year financial planned -- recovery plan entered a new phase. all banks are closed and will remain closed for the next five business days. thousands rushed to atms to withdraw money. today, strict cash withdrawal rules went into effect. the athens stock exchange is closed today. supreme court justices are not done after history making decisions on same-sex marriage and the president's health care

right now, prison escapee david sweat is in critical condition. he was shot walking along a road near the canadian border. matt was killed by police on friday. today prince george's county man will stand trial for ordering his uncle's murder. prosecutors say that brian mayhew had someone kill his uncle nico to keep him from testifying against him in another trial. and this morning, a wootton high school in rockville -- at that high school students can get help from grief counselors. friday morning, two recent wootton graduates died in a crash in north potomac. two other students were in that car. they were also hurt. counselors will be available from 9:00 this morning until 3:00 this afternoon for all the students. it is coming up on 5:0 right now. good morning, i'm aaron

we'll see how far the government can go to limit mercury emissions and we are seeing more fallout from ruling that legal sized same-sex marriage. the next one is objections to the ruling, that will play out in the courtroom and on the campaign trail. listen to how the two republican governors responded. >> we have got no choice to comply even though i think this decision was the wrong one. >> the supreme court has ruled. it's the law of the land. and we'll abide by it. >> governor jindal of louisiana is running for president. governor kasich likely to run as well. the top prosecutor in texas has lawyers ready to defend those who don't issue marriage licenses due to religious beliefs. and many plan to spend less on the wedding than other couples that's from the wedding industry website the knot.

the average cost of a wedding in this country for any couple is more than $31,000. well, just about two weeks from now, wisconsin governor scott walker says he'll tell us whether he is running for president. he told fox news channel he'll announce his plans the week of july 13. walker is considered a top candidate. he is running a few points behind jeb bush and marco rubio in the latest poll. and john kasich is expected to join the race. he can announce as soon as july 21. he is reportedly planning to head immediately to new hampshire south carolina iowa and michigan. tomorrow new jersey governor chris christie is expected to announce his bid. now if all three join the race, the total number of republican candidates will be a staggering 16. vice president joe biden is sharing his personal connection with the charleston church where nine people were killed. he spoke on sunday at emanuel ame church. he said he visited the church before and knew the pastor

clementa pinckney. his appearance was a surprise to worshipers and he received a standing ovation. 5:34 now. the leader of one of washington's most loved landmarks is ullandmark landmarks is calling is for removal of the confederate themed decorations. the national cathedral has two stained glass panels bearing the flag. it was put in by the daughters of the confederacy to honor military leaders. yesterday the dean spoke about the flag. he says the images have become a symbol of white supremacy. >> the fact that so many find it so offensive should be enough of a reason to fold it up and put it away. >> the cathedral's governing body has final say on whether the panels are removed. the international space station can run low on supplies if another capsule launch fails. you probably saw the video right there of spacex supply capsule

welcome back. if you ever need an ambulance in loudoun county, you can now expect a bill. loudoun county supervisors approved a new charge -- a new program to charge you if you need an ambulance ride. this is according to leesburg today. the paper says the program will start next week and any bills would go to your insurance company first. a ride can cost anywhere between

you're watching "news4 today." welcome back. 5:45. we are following three transportation stories this morning around our area. in a few hours we expect toette if an update from montgomery county president about the purple line. as we head into july 4th, the holiday, the gas prices are coming down. how much you'll save on your road trip. first though, new lane stripes are coming to the beltway and the i-95 express lane. news4's derrick ward is live in springfield to explain how this will make your commute safer. derrick? >> reporter: good morning

aaron. ironically, we are talking about purple lines here as well. not the kind that deal with railways but the kind on the roadways. you can see the -- we're in springfield. you can see that sign there that's telling you express lanes are coming up. people don't always know that. when you see that sign it's too late to get into the lane. so transurban the company that runs the express lanes is going to do something to clear up the confusion. their put -- they're going to be putting some purple lines on the roadways inside the existing white or yellow line. they surveyed about 1,200 drivers. about 50% of the drivers they surveyed weren't quite sure about where to get on to or off of the express lanes. that could be costly and dangerous. you can get a fine if you're in the lane without the proper ez pass. it's dangerous to make an abrupt lane change, so starting this month and into next month they'll be painting the lines on the roadway to give you another indicator that you either -- where you should be or shouldn't be where you are.

according to aaa the average price for unleaded went down two cents in the last week. you're paying $2.58 in virginia. and $2.82 the average out in west virginia. and $2.93 here in d.c. experts saying that gas demand is growing but a large supply is keeping those prices down. they expect prices to keep to fall in the weeks ahead. 5:48 now. a developing story in ohio this morning. investigators there racing to connect the dots in a series of missing persons cases. six women have gone missing over the last year. four have turned up dead. this is unfolding in a small town between cincinnati and columbus. growing concerns are that a serial killer is to blame here, but investigators don't know enough about the women just yet. >> who did they hang out with? who's on their cell phones, who did they spend time with? who did they have as associates? or peripheral friends? the answer may be there. >> now, detectives say that some

the overflow happened during the strong storms on saturday. wssc has posted signs notifying residents in the area. and in st. mary's and charles counties, we learned two tornadoes touched down. they ripped up more than 50 trees and damaged some houses and barns but no one got hurt. larry hogan says he's feeling strong and healthy after his first round of chemotherapy. in a facebook post yesterday he said he feels humbled and uplifted by the outpouring of support. there haves a prayer vigil for the governor last noight in annapolis. he thanked the medical team saying we are killing cancer cells left and right and i have no side effects. >> he's a wonderful person, a wonderful man. he deserves this and like i said we're all 100% behind him. >> last week the governor revealed he had been diagnosed with the nonhodgkins lymphoma.

when you take a big look at things. 95, a little slow northbound through stafford and opens back up and then as you're headed north through dale city it slows down one again. tom, how are we looking out there? >> you'll love what you're coming to you. take a look at the sunrise, live view of storm team 4 tower camera this morning. pristine, tangerine sun now coming up and a dry sky. lower humidity, gorgeous day. am i using too much hyperbole or is that -- that's just enough hyperbole? and later today, by noon we'll be in the upper 70s and hyperbolic 84 by later on this afternoon with lots of sunshine and low humidity. just a gorgeous june day. comfortable humidity throughout the day and then getting more uncomfortable or sticky on tuesday as that humidity as usual has to return here as with get into the end of june and early july. nothing on storm team 4 radar now. all clear. dry sky. we're in the 50s though. quite a chill in the air.

shenandoah valley and west virginia, back down to 50. and reagan national now at 64. the average high this time of the year is 88. we'll be upnear that on tuesday and wednesday and thursday and friday a little below the average high. then near that again on sunday and monday. as we get to the fourth of july we'll have the humidity back. and up near 90 tomorrow with a chance of an afternoon storm. there's a slight risk that some of the storms tomorrow might be severe with some damaging winds in the afternoon. then on wednesday, a much smaller chance of any storms around with a high around 90. then on thursday, maybe a morning shower, afternoon thundershower. mid 80s. then headed into the fourth of july weekend, mid 80s. for saturday on the 4th, might get some showers interrupting you on saturday afternoon and for some of the fireworks displays up near 90 on sunday. rather humid. partly cloudy.
