weather day by any means. tracking showers on storm team 4 radar. we have had rain move into the area and it's going to continue for the morning hours. here is the latest now. the rain favoring parts of northern virginia back into western maryland and the panhandle of western virginia. rain moving through montgomery county fauquier frederick and howard county. scattered showers for the morning hours. as we get into the afternoon hours, scattered showers and thunderstorms possible. you want the umbrella handy today. you have outdoor cookouts. be ready to move indoors. here is the morning planner, 73 degrees, spotty showers. 8:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. temperatures warm into the mid-70s by noon. limited sunshine is possible at that point. coming up i'm going to show you future weather for this afternoon on into the evening, what we can expect for fireworks and timing out the potential for thunderstorms later today.

>> all right. thank you so much amelia. happy fourth of july. there are so many things going on around the area today to celebrate america's birthday. no matter where you and the family plan to celebrate, make sure safety comes first. law enforcement arndsound the area is on high alert tracking problems especially lone wolf isis inspired attacks. it is important to stress there are no credible threats. as always if you see something, say something. all right, start off your fourth of july festivities with a trip to the national mall for the folklife festival happening between thirst and fourth streets. it opens at 11:00 this morning. the fourth of july parade starts downtown at 11:45. you and the family can line up along constitution avenue.

the parade goes from 7th to 17th street. marching bands and balloons will be there until 2:00. the sights and sounds of the holiday come to life on the west lawn of the capitol. a capitol concert is sponsored by the national symphony orchestra. the concert goes until 9:30. there's barry manilow. following the concert turn your eyes to the sky. fourth of july here in the nation's capitol always has a spectacular fireworks somewhere near the reflecting pool. you can see them around the city. the only way the show is delayed or postponed is heavy rain or thunderstorms. amelia is tracking that. >> there's a lot going on. if you are heading out to join the celebrations, give yourself extra time. there are going to be lots of

street closures. roads are closed at this hour and will remain closed until 11:00 tonight. the nbc washington app, keep it with you today. you can find a list of road closures, constitution avenue is going to be shut down. independence avenue will be closed in part and the arlington memorial bridge as well. entry to the national mall is going to start at 10:00 this morning. thousands of you expected to use metro to get into the district. it will run on a regular saturday schedule until 2:00 then ramp up service similar to a weekday rush hour. again, the nbc washington app is going to help you and keep you moving throughout the day. the smithsonian stop will become entrance only at 9:30 tonight to help people exit safely. you can get a free ride home after the celebrations tonight. if you are unable to drive home safely, sober ride will get you back home. it runs from 10:00 tonight until

4:00 in the morning. if you celebrate too much, call 1-800-200-taxi. you can get up to a $30 fare for free. nationwide, more than 40% of traffic deaths on traffic deaths on fourth of july involve drunk drivers. the show must go on. despite a broken leg, the foo fighters will perform tonight. the frontman fell off the stage and broke his leg while performing in sweden. but, he came back and finished the show on crushes. he grew up in the springfield area. today the national mall isn't the only place to catch fireworks. in prince george's county you can check out the university of maryland's fireworks show. you can bring your own blankets and lawn chairs. in montgomery county rockville will be a good place to catch

organizers put together a service of solemn dignity and honor for the fallen detective. silva's teammates say he will be remembered for his wide smile, love of his job and family. >> an uneasy weekend for leaders of the eurozone. they are watching a vote in greece with global economic consequences. supportered and opponents were angry, taking their frustration to the street against police yesterday. voters in greece are completely split on whether to accept terms of a bailout. most greek banks are closed, markets aren't trading. the vote happens tomorrow. puerto rico's governor hopes a newly signed bill will help the country's economic crisis. it will allow certain public agencies to buy up to $400 million in tax and revenue notes. the bill was signed yesterday days after puerto rico announced

every year we show you scenes just like fireworks can be. a maryland woman is recovering this morning after a firework exploded in her hand. they say the explosion injured three other fingers on the woman's hand. it happened wednesday night in a backyard in capitol heights. homemade fireworks are illegal in the county. more than 200 people are taken to the e.r. every fourth of july for fireworks injuries according to the consumer

products safety commission. this morning, we have a few ways to stay safe. number one, never buy fireworks packaged in brown paper. that is a sign they are professional grade. never stand over a firework while lighting it. move a safe distance away once it is lit. keep a hose or bucket nearby. make sure fireworks are legal where you live before you use them. now, while you may love the fourth of july your pet may not be too crazy about the holiday. e.r. visits to the vet skyrocket during this weekend by 48%. not necessarily because pets are afraid of fireworks, though many of them are, most had to do with animals eating something they shouldn't and long hot road trips. so, be mindful. 6:12. still ahead, diplomatic relations between cuba and the

the highlight of her life. it was the first time my grand grandmother and mom had seen each other since 1961. mom only remembers her from pictures. i had never met her. growing up we embrace this part of the latino culture a hug and a kiss. she wanted to open up her home, opening up the natural light. we hoped a breeze. the heat and humidity unbearable. we headed into the kitchen. this is all the water she collects. only running water twice a week. she saves up. her propane tank indoors next to the stove it fuels. her food pantry a couple bare shelves. her bathroom she was ashamed to show us. mid tour, a brief interruption. we watched her shuffle to the

today the weather has moderate impact on your independence day. more clouds than sunshine. high temperatures ranging from the 70s to 80s and tracking scattered showers this morning and scattered thunderstorms as we head into the afternoon hours. some storms contain heavy rain. something to keep in mind. any thunderstorms are going to contain lightning. again, if you have the outdoor plans, move indoors quickly. here is the latest on storm team 4 radar. montgomery, frederick, fauquier counties, prince william and fairfax county. further to the west in west virginia, this is the back edge of what we are waiting for to move through and also that interacting with another disturbance. that means showers and thunderstorms likely firing later today. here is the latest timing. 10:00 a.m., areas of rain. at noon, tracking scattered showers. at 2:00 p.m., we see a line of thunderstorms develop as it

you may have seen her dance at the kennedy center. now she's making leaps into the world of dance. >> misty copeland is an inspiration for young dancers everywhere hoping to follow in her graceful footsteps. we have more on her historic past. >> reporter: after years of dedicated preparation misty copeland's dream finally came true today. >> i don't think i could be a part of this if i didn't like to work hard. >> reporter: she is the first african-american promoted to principle female dancer in the 75 year history of the american balley theatre. the big moment caught on her facebook page. last week she was the lead in swan lake at the met. another first for an african-american woman.
